Bob Gainey

Bob Gainey oozes hockey.

He defines dedication, leadership, and loyalty.
In 100 years of history, Bob Gainey stands out as one of the greatest to ever wear the bleu-blanc-rouge.

He captained this team to the Stanley Cup.
He led this team through sacrifice: he's bled, he's fought, he's played with dislocated shoulders.
Gainey wore the CH with pride.

He loves this team and he loves this city.
He stayed with this team through hard times -  both on and off the ice.

Love him or hate him as a GM, having a man like Bob Gainey step away is a sad day for the Habs organization.

I wish him the best and thank him for everything that he has given to this city.

...

Listen live to CBC Daybreak (88.5FM) Tuesday at 7:15AM to hear me talk more about Gainey's resignation.
I'll be representing Habs fans - so leave your comments and let me know what you think about all of this.

Thank you Bob!

As an aside--can anyone tell me where PK Subban is? Is he hurt, a me first guy, are they slowly bringing him along, is he having trouble grasping the professional hockey life?? The team needs someone that can stir things up a bit with a hit or a fight. These small fast guys are not cutting it and have'nt for a few years now. can the team sign a big power forward or does anybody want to come to Montreal??

the habs blueline is somewhat stable right now... instead of bringing up PK we need a though winger who can pot a few goals...

and i don't think they want to rush PK up like they did Price. PK is maybe the Habs best prospect right now and they don't want to make the same mistakes again.

http://legrandclub.rds.ca/profils/608456/posts/56979 ...this link of a Renaud Lavoie column on Gainey provides a more detailed insight on what Bob actually was trying to do behind the scenes

...it is the dumbing-down and extremism of a great proportion of The Habs' Fandom ...in addition to politics and economics ...which made the success of Bob Gainey convincing talent to Quebec/Montreal ...and The Montreal Canadiens ...so hit 'n miss

...I Myself doubt whether The Montreal Canadiens will ever again win a Stanley Cup ...unless Habs' Fans and It's media come to Their sanity

It was time for a change. My fear is that Gauthier will not be an upgrade. Read more at: http://www.habsaddict.com/2010/02/bob-gaineys-tenure-was-full-of-mistake...

(reposted from Mike's 'The Gainey Era')

...aside from the fact You conveniently omitted 'sports writer hacks' from Your list ...I think You covered the premise and issues appropriately Mike

...a more passionate and engrossed Fan of Our Team I could not imagine, was Myself for much of My Life ...

...over those years, I left Montreal and Quebec 4 times for varied other destinations in this big ol' World of Ours ...and returned ...The Habs always came with Me, no matter where I was heading

...but somewhere post-1996, I left Montreal (Quebec) for the final time, with a self-acceptance I would not return to live ...and I found Myself further 'indifferent' to My Habs, which were for Me an essential part of My love of My former 'home'

...to make a long-story shorter, it was Bob Gainey returning that revived My emotional connection to My Habs, reminding Myself emotionally WHY this Hockey Team represented in-part My own identity

...did I not become perplexed with many of Bob's decisions, and frustrated by My Habs being essentially still a rather mediocre Hockey Team ...YES ...absolutely

...yet, as A Fan, of both Bob Gainey and The Habs, My energy in ranting in this zoo We call HabsInsideOut was always hopeful (stupid as it sounds) that Bob would 'hear' Me and I with Others can influence His decision

...at no time, in My own rantings and opinions did I ever mention I had no longer 'faith' in Bob Gainey to be the Face of Our Team

...for most other things in Life, I am a generally a rational Real-world Person, balanced with a tendency to think with My Heart when appropriate

...regarding My Habs thinking with My Heart was/is My tendency ...same with Bob Gainey ...as I believe(d) I would rather lose with Bob Gainey than win without Bob Gainey

...after sleeping on it last night ...waking-up and looking at the soul-less mugs of Boivin and Gauthier ...and understanding how much the Earth has shifted this morning ...and listening to some of the mean idiocy of a fair proportion of other Habs' fans ...I am worried whether My indifference may soon return

Great post...many of my sentiments/frustrations echoed here.

I have nothing but admiration and respect for Mr. Gainey.

He gave this individual hope for better things when he came to the Canadiens in 2003 after the team had wandered in the wilderness of the NHL for several years.

If the players of today had half of his dedication as a player, the current team, I'm sure, would not be struggling near as much.

Thanks, Bob. Enjoy your retirement, if that's the case.

THANK you Bob. We appreciated you, and still do.

LONG LIVE #23

You know they say that the NHL is faster now. They say they players are bigger now. They say the equipment is better now. On the night they retired Bob Gainey's number he wore his uniform again. He skated onto the ice with more power, strength, and determination in each stride than anyone on either team displayed during the following game.

Bob Gainey always played to win. One hell of a hockey player, one hell of a coach, one hell of a GM, and one hell of a human being.

Good post.  We are a better team because of him.
