Under the circumstances ...

A great effort.

Canadiens blow a 3-2 lead with six minutes to go and lose in OT. But playing without Saku Koivu and dressing only 17 skaters, the team hung tough and came away with a well-deserved point.

The traditionally fatal holiday road trip yielded eight of a possible 12 points.

No too shabby.

On to '08.

Aftermath:

Scott Gomez: "That's one of the best teams we've faced."

I almost forgive him for getting Claude Julien fired in New Jersey.

OT 3:54:

Poor Hamrlik.

Great all night, then that.

00:00:

At least eight points of a possible 12 on the road.

Excellent.

3P 1:00:

Bad time for Hamrlik to start making mistakes. Gotta play for the point.

3P 4:00:

This might be Ryder's best game of the season.

3P 5:00:

Funny how momentum goes. Rangers are a good team. Dangerous forwards.

3P 5:51:

No doubt about that one. Chris Drury wins the draw and then ties the game.

3-3

3P Break:

This is torture. Should have cashed that 2-on-1.

3P 6:52:

No goal. What took so long? RDS called it right away.

3P 6:52:

Pierre Houde: "Maybe the line is busy."

3P 6:52:

Pedneault asks "Why does it take so long to make a decision in Toronto?"

3P 6:52:

Under review. Didn't look like a goal. And the Rangers had six skaters on the ice.

3P 9:00:

Shots are 5-1 Rangers. Hanging on here.

3P Break:

Markov is coming back on. The end of the game is going to be medieval.

3P 9:30:

Markov got hurt blocking a shot.  Carbo has done well on match-ups in a road game.

3P 10:35:

Fourth line pluggers give the Canadiens trouble

3P 12:00:

Good time for Huet to get hot.

3P 13:00:

That was the Rangers' third shot since the first period.

3P Break:

Bad ice, tired Rangers ... could be interesting.

3P 14:00:

Another no call, Shanahan on Higgins.

3P 16:00:

Anothewr solid night for Max.

3P 18:00:

Penalty killed. What a gut check effort tonight.

3P 20:00:

Stand by for brilliant insight: Big PK here.

Between periods:

How good is Chris Drury on faceoffs? He's 12-1 ... The Pleks line has seven of the Canadiens' 17 shots and all three goals ... Roman Hamrlik: 14:58 and he's been a monster ... No matter how this ends, the Canadiens have played a huge character game. No Koivu, facing a red-hot team, they've skated, hit and worked the puck deep on every shift.

2P 00:02:

BAD penalty for Tom the Bomb, given the situation. Instinctive, as the RDS guys said.

2P 2:53:

What a sequence: delayed penalty, Bouillon makes a helluva play, as do the K brothers and Pleks makes it 3-2

2P 5:29:

The PP is alive

And so is Andrei K.

2-2

2P Break:

Another PP. For whom?

2P 7:00:

Lundqvist felt that Ryder blast. The 30-goal guy is showing signs of life.

2P 7:50:

Corey Locke is in the building. He was stuck in traffic.

2P Break:

This is anyone's game if it stays close. Big IF, though.

2P 11:00:

Rangers have no shots in this period. Roman Hamrlik is just a joy to watch on D.

2P 12:30:

Line combinations are getting hard to follow.

2P Break:

Lundqvist is on fire. Great that the Canadiens are getting all these chances.

2P 14:00:

The camera operator can't follow the Canadiens. Hamrlik made a perfect pass to Higgins, who hit the post.

2P 17:00:

Kovy centring Kostopoulos and Dandenault (who were on, with Chipchura for both Rangers goals). And Ryder, working hard, draws a penalty.

2P 18:00:

Christopher Higgins' high-school sweetheart must be in the crowd. He's flying tonight.

2P 19:30:

RDS guys are enjoying the game. Pedneault says refs are "letting the players express themselves."

Between periods:

Canadiens were 4-14 on faceoffs. Max is 2-7. It's tough when you spend the game chasing the puck .... That wasn't the best 20 minutes of Josh Gorges' career .... Not the best 20 minutes of Huet's season. Maybe he's a bit fatigued: three games in four nights, and the Rangers will have him hopping ... Plekanec played 7:46, Kovy 7:18 .... RDS guys are doing a year-end review. Again, Brière. I'm sick of it. Bring on 2008

1P 00:00:

Good period.

1P 1:40:

The tie didn't last long.

Jagr.

2-1

1P 1:57:

Streit makes a big check behind the net, Pleks feeds Andrei K and bingo!

1-1

1P 3:00:

Ah, the bounes got used up in Florida. That 2-on-1 should have been the tying goal.

1P Break:

Wow! Gorges and Bouillon both pinched deep. Then Ryder takes an idiotic penalty. Did anyone tell him the Rangers PP was great last night?

1P Break:

That goal changed everything. The Rangers are suddenly energized. Jagr very nearly made it 2-0.

1P 8:30:

Here's the test. Will Canadiens fall apart?

1P 10:00:

Not the earlyu scoring explosions we saw in Florida, but undermanned Canadiens are hanging in.

And just as I type that, Dan Girardi scores on a ridiculous shot from the point.

1P 12:20:

Looks like Chipchura will be double-shifted. He's well-rested ... and young.

Pre-game:

Not going to be easy. The Rangers are just loaded ... Corey Locke's equipment didn't make it, so Canadiens will dress 19 .... In his Journal de Montréal column, Jacques Demers compared Guilaume Latendresse to Steve Shutt. A bit of a stretch, the more so because Gui! is not playing with Guy Lafleur and Jacques Lemaire ... Benoit Brunet says he'd take Sean Avery on his team in a minute ... In 1998-'99 the Canadiens got eight of a possible 10 points ... Luc Gélinas interviews Guy Carbonneau in a chaotic corridor of MSG. What's the bet someone nicks the RDS background banner

1P Commercial break:

Captain Kovy tonight ... Scott Gomez looks like the lone fast Ranger.

1P 16:00:

Refs' cnspiracy continues. Two penalties ignored ... and counting.  Big skating edge for Canadiens so far. Chipchura centres Latendresse and Sergei K.

1P 18:00:

Streit and Hamrlich. Good shift by fourth line.

1P 19:07:

Nice rush by Chris Higgins. He'll play big minutes tonight.

Bad ice:

Knicks played an afternoon game, so the ice will be bad. Kovalev tells RDS the ice was lousy in Florida also. Hey, is the whole team growing road-trip beards?

No Koivu:

Renaud Lavoie says they're playing it safe, remembering how flu ravaged the club last year. So the Captain stayed at the hotel. Unless Corey Locke arrives on time, Canadiens won't have enough players.

Here's wishing you luck Mr. Boone in losing those 18 pounds you need in order to match Hggins' weight.

sorry double post

Happy New Year, Mr. Boone! This site and your blogs make the Habs experience more fun than ever. All the best for you and yours in 2008! Gilbert

I finally saw the goals on TSN. They really did look like the globetrotters out there!

sidhu's picture
I'm happy that TSN showed A.Kostitsyn leveling that motormouth Avery.

Kevin's picture
Great game by Kovalev. Pleks failed to cash in on 2 of those and that cost the game. Also a great game for the K bro's!

They did play well tonight the effort was there and they were down a player as well. The only mistake and if you can really call it that was the fact that they went into a defensive shell a little early. From about the 15-minute mark on they were trying to protect a 1-goal lead. Not a good move, the habs always play best when they attack and attack and attack. When they try to protect a 1-goal lead this is usually what happens, but live and learn. It does look like Carbo is trying to get the guys into that mindset of attack with pressure and keep it going. All in all coming home with 8 out of a possible 12 points on tough road trip is a good road trip.

The Teacher's picture
For the record, the goal was Shanahan's 641st.

Kjdavid, please don't take this the wrong way, but your long posts with run-on sentences and improper grammer and punctuation are really difficult to follow. . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

Huet doesn't suck. Then again, he didn't even make an attempt at a save and just watched it into the net, so he definitely saw the puck... but what do I know? To tell you the truth, the only explanation I can come up with is that Huet thought that it was going to go wide... and guessed wrong. And I was born in 1969, so they've only given me eight Stanley Cups. They owe me, damnit! . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

So we move on through the house league that is the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. No Secretariats here gang! It will be a run for the roses in 2008. On that note, I wish you all the very best of new years! May all of those involved with HIO, at the Gazette and posters, enjoy a healthy and prosperous '08s. All the best, Brian

Moey's picture
You're right, no Secretariats here yet, but I am seeing flashes of Barbaro in the boys. Big Red's picture is on standby, ready to launch when we get our cup. Cheers mate, enjoyed your posts, best wishes for 2008!

One Secretariat and a whole lot of high-end claimers. They have shown so far that with the kiddie corps they can compete with the rest of the east. Let's keep the kids playing and work on improving that 4th line and you never know. Have a happy new year yourself, Brian. May 2008 be everything you and yours hope for.. best regards, earl.

There's a lot of negativity here considering: third game in four nights for both goalie and team, the team was missing a key player AND had no replacement, they were playing a good team, AND they came from behind to score a point at the end of a very long road trip. It sucks they lost, but they played quite well and it's not the end of the world. It's not like that Dallas game or whatever. Call the road trip a success and move on. http://yearofthehab.blogspot.com

Chuck's picture
There was an easy way to get around a third game in four nights for Huet, so they can't use that as an excuse for blowing a point that they were in good shape to bank. They did play well, and being an extra man down for the whole game sure didn't help their cause. 8 out of 12 points on the trip is great, but 9 out of 12 was in their grasp. Let's hope we're not on the outside of the playoffs by one point like we were last April, or this loss is going to hurt a lot more than we think. . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

The Teacher's picture
Yeah, some people can't see silver linings, what can I say.

Habs-Kat's picture
Huet's only played for two NHL teams... hardly a journeyman.

The Teacher's picture
I have no clue what or where this guy is coming from or what argument he is trying to make. It's incomprehensible. Is he saying we are giving Carbo and Price slack? Is he saying we're not giving Huet slack? I'm so confused. #1 save percentage Price is a year or two away from being the full-time starter. Thank god that guy isn't the GM or he'd burn price out.

The Teacher's picture
ayiyi, you need to learn how to speak to people. Who on this site has ever criticized Price? Everyone understands that he's a rookie and will make his mistakes. Called gaining experience. Huet has no talent. Ok, if you say so. A guy with no talent doesn't routinely save 30+ shots night after night which he has done this year and in the past. I haven't agreed with Carbo's moves, but he's the coach, end of story. If Gainey feels like firing him, he will. If not, he won't. Who's lil captain anyways? Koivu's a bigger man than you'll ever be, that's for sure. Anyways, respond to me with another comment with swear words or ridiculous stupidities and you won't receive another reply from me. I'm here to talk hockey, not argue with people who talk like an emerging adolescent. apologies to all adolescents out there.

The Teacher's picture
Huh? I said g take one, had nothing to do with your opinions. Had to do with the way you posted them, the name calling, and anger management issues, that's all. Goal-tending is different than playing as a player. You don't play every game, especially not as a rookie. This year he'll get 30-40 games, next year 45-55, and then the job is his. Who knows, the job could be his next year. i have no problems trading Huet for SOMETHING, but have no problems signing him to a 2 year deal either. Fleury was supposed to be can't miss too. I wanted O'Byrne up since the beginning. I wanted Breezer out. You have to temper youth with experience. Huet is doing that with Price. We are growing. i don't expect a Cup this year, that's for sure.

Bill's picture
Well, Huet has been fantastic since coming back from his injury, especially the previous two games, so he's being cut some slack. The winner from Shanahan was a perfect shot, no criticism called for no matter who is in net. http://yearofthehab.blogspot.com

The Teacher's picture
This is the first sensible post you wrote. congratulations.

should be shanahan could not understand

Watching the msc on tv shanahan could understand why the Habs went with the 4-1 system in the third. And game broadcasters were saying the same thing. They said Canadiens owed N.Y for 2 then gave the puck to N>Y.

showey47's picture
well then if we owned them for the first 2 why change in the third? How many points have we lost in the third because of trying to protect a lead with a 1-4 system? You play to win, instead of playing not to lose.

RH's picture
If anyone has ever wondered, yes, that is #73 in my picture, to the left of this comment. Another solid game for Ryder, much like he's played for most of the season. Yes, he hasn't scored but, he hasn't been a defensive liability like he has in the past. He hustled again tonight, threw some solid hits, made a couple of superb passes, and, as is the norm with him, came really, really close to scoring. If he hasn't gotten discouraged at this point in the season, he'll be okay. The goals will come. Until then, I hope he keeps up his solid defensive effort.

NLhabsfan's picture
When you think about that non goal gave the rangers a chance to regroup and rest.It sucks but could be true.... a 5 min.break is great when you can get it..

Ian G Cobb's picture
Well we played a great game for a young team with a lot to learn, before we get Stanly in two years. We only won 2 faceoffs in the third. And under pressure in the third we gave it up often. Still frusting team to watch at times but we are very young and learning with every game. Also for the Carbo haters, he will be around for a lot of years and wear a few more rings. He is doing a super job with our young talent! Very good road trip and i sure hope we can play as relaxed at home for a change.

RH's picture
This game was right there for the Habs to take. They got the point though, and under the circumstances, I won't begrudge these guys not getting the two. This road trip was a HUGE success for the Habs and now it seems that they've got a little bit of a groove going. Hopefuuly, there road success will start rubbing off on there home games.

Ed's picture
Kovalev played 23:36 tonight. I think he is the type of player to thrive on a lot of ice time. This is probably the most any forward has played this year.

J.T.'s picture
Well, the PK looked a lot better tonight. I love Lapierre working shorthanded. The faceoffs are still a problem, though. That said, the only thing we can ask of these guys is that they show up with heart and effort. If they do, even outmanned against a hot, loaded team, they will win most nights. So, mistakes happen sometimes and cost them the second point...but at least they tried hard and contested the outcome. They need to address the most pressing issue of the season now, and start bring that effort and heart to the Bell Centre. They have a couple of winnable home games on deck. If they play like they did tonight, they'll be looking good.

showey47's picture
hamr was also a minus 3 tonight with nearly 23 mins of ice time poor guy, the only plus was sergei in only 11 mins of icetime. The most telling stat is 68% for faceoffs for the ranger and 32% for the habs, the rangers had 2 players over 80%.

Too bad for Hammer-he played a great game as did everyone....The best shot on the Rangers alone on Huet-not too much any goalie could have done.Great finish to 2007......best of luck for the next half Habs and fans..

Keith's picture
The D made a bad pinch, we didn't get it deep, and the Rangers go down and score to win it. A young team mistake, but 8 out of 12 points on this road trip is far more than I expected them to get especially after the disaster in Dallas. Playing with a short bench and I hope I'm wrong, but, I'm afraid the flu bug may ravage the team again this year. Go home, get some rest and take some Flu FX boys.

howtathor's picture
Habs played their hearts out tonight. They had every excuse not to compete being without Koivu and short on bodies but they played the vaunted Rangers to a draw. Hamrlik's giveaway was due more to fatigue than anything else. This road trip has been a great xmas present and bodes well for the new year. Happy New Year to everyone and Go Habs in 08!

Another game pissed away with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd. Have we ever held a 1 goal lead with 10 minutes to go in a game? Kovy looked great tonight. Hope he gets named to the All-Star team, he's earned it. Huet looked bad, but doesn't seem to matter who's in nets, there will be 2 bad goals surrendered every game. Which means sitting back for the last 20 minutes might not be the ideal strategy.

24 Cups's picture
Lighten up on Huet. Hamrlik was just as guilty. We basically lost this game in the third period because we couldn't win any faceoffs. It's dificult to go into a defensive shell when you give the puck up to the other team after every draw. Drury beat us constantly. We can all talk about it tomorrow but this was a great road trip topped off by a spirited effort tonight. When it's all said and done, the Habs are in good shape. I'm proud of them. The Original 24 Cups

showey47's picture
ah well at least we didn't get smoked like the laffs did. 8 out of a possible 12 points on a road trip where we usually get 1 or 2. The boys deserved better but when we lose that many draws and play not to lose instead of playing to win in a close game this is what happens. Ah well be proud of the team overall they played a good game

gumper's picture
And by the way, considering how the Rangers manhandled the Leafs last night, it makes you feel even better to see how our boys handled themselves at MSG tonight.

Moey's picture
Let's put this into perspective, they have done much better than any of us (including the media) could have predicted, and some people are still bitching. We got a point tonight, they've righted their wrongs from last time this season, all is good people. On to the next one.

The only "fans" still bitching are those too grew up on EA Sports, to immature to have an understanding of the bigger picture. Damn straight Moey. Good post! Nice to see the true supporters out as well.

Moey's picture
HabsFreak, I'm an oldtimer, I knew them in their glory days, especially in the 70's, what kills me is the knee high to a grasshoppers being such critics and know it alls, it drives me nuts. No one is more frustrated than the old Hab fans, but I'll tell you something, if we can't make it with Gainey & Carbo, we never will. So let them put that in their pipes and smoke it.

whitecat's picture
it's not as if they didn't play the whole 60 minutes Go Habs Go!!! Good game all around

gumper's picture
Congratulations to Habs on a successful road trip. Eight points out of 12...awesome. Much better than many of us thought. Let's hope they can return home with the same work ethic and confidence they've shown in 5 out of 6 of the last games. Next is the Bolts. Nice way to open a home stand.

Hey, we got a hard earned, well deserved point. Good game, good road trip, a well earned day off. Rangers have a good team and they showed their pride in the 3rd. We were outmaned and the wear began to show. Props to all who played hard and to Carbonneau for a well managed short bench without last change. Good job all round!!

Chuck's picture
We also gave away an even harder earned second point that was ours for the taking. We're going to need as many of those points as we can get for the playoff run. Glad we at least got one, but it's giving away that second point (making for a two-point swing with the Rangers) that really frustrates me. . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

I'm with you . . . very frustrating to give away a second point. I could feel it coming, and surely the opposition teams know that is the pattern. Yes, 8 of 12 is excellent, but it should be 9. One point was all we needed last April. New rule #1: No more playing "Kitty bar the door" with over 12 minutes left in the third. In any period, make that! New rule #2: No more back-handed knifing in the puck from the neutral zone. Even if it is a pass. On the other hand, who'd a thunk a Decembner funk would turn out so well!!!! Go Habs.

Chuck's picture
If the Rangers beat us out of a playoff spot by one point, I'll guarantee you that no one will then look back on this game and say, "Oh well, at least we got a point." . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

The Teacher's picture
Sigh, no..Everyone will be thinking back to the Nashville game.

Chuck's picture
Sadly, there have been a few of those this year. That's my point. Getting blown out doesn't irk me half as much as having the lead and two points in your pocket and letting them slip away. It's those games that kill you in the end, and is something that this team needs to address. . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

The Teacher's picture
Very true. Very true.

NLhabsfan's picture
I agree fully.

Girth's picture
Just a thought... Perhaps should have been Price tonight. I still say that if we manage Huet's games... Let's say at the rate of about 55 to 60 games a year, he'll have great numbers. However, as soon as he gets a little tired, there is a noticeable drop-off. I 'm not saying he was horrible, I just didn't sense the same energy from him as in the previous 2 games. I propose we trade him this year(February 2008) and make this someone else's problem. It should be Carey's turn now. Try and mirror the road success at home.

doug's picture
not a smart thought, in my view. i prefer huet.

The Teacher's picture
some people just hate him, nothing we can say or do.

Habs-Kat's picture
Another star for Kovalev. He's gonna win his second straight Molson Cup - well deserved too. He played like a man on a mission tonight, I think the "C" added a bit more to his game.

sidhu's picture
Are you impliedly suggesting that Kovy should wear "C" for the rest of the season and that our current Captain should be exchanged for, oh I don't know, Marleau and Bernier? (Apologies to Moey)

Moey's picture
sidhu, they walk among us, what can you do except scratch your head, bite your tongue (fingers) and take the high road.

The Teacher's picture
I agree, he has played hard in every single game this year as opposed to 0 last year. I think he felt the weight of the C on his sweater.

linp's picture
Huet played like a tired goalie.

Given your typing and grammatical skills, I'd think twice about criticizing others.

When you go into a shell you lose the momentum, another late game collapse. When does Carbo figure it out? A successful road trip, but another crappy coaching decision costs us.

linp's picture
I would think that was the sign of a young team. The first two periods, we were free wheeling. When the game is on the line, the youngsters start to play tentative.

N.B.habs fan's picture
carb.will raise the banner (: (soon) they did better than Toronto ,GO HABS GO

I'd put a cone in the net before him in a shootout.

Chuck's picture
Huet looked more like he was trying to hope the shot wide. At least make an attempt at the save! Aarrrrugh!!!! . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

gmd's picture

showey47's picture
where the hell was the defence, huet looked like he was in shootout form on that one, nice shot though

NLhabsfan's picture
Jeez above all people....

Chuck's picture
Did Huet even move on that one? Someone shold have told him we weren't in the shootout yet. Horrible!!! . . . ______________________________________________ "Vote Saku for All-Star... or little Timmy gets it!!!"

The Teacher's picture
Ummm..it was a perfect shot...from a guy with over 600 NHL goals. I'll give Huet the benefit of the doubt ;)

Why try then? Just run out of the net yelling "no fair, no fair!"

The Teacher's picture
He was in good position to make the save, the shot was just better. Huet's not the first goalie not to move on a shot, and he definitely won't be the last. I just think we're harping on the small stuff and avoiding the big picture. 8 points on a 12 point trip earns them a little slack.
