The monkey disembarks ... and calisse, it feels good!

posted by Mike Boone at 16h47 EST on Dec 15

Canadiens finally won one at the Bell Centre after four regulation and two shootout losses.

The team played 60 minutes of solid hockey, and Carey Price shut the Leafs out for 56 of those minutes in a 4-1 win.

Afterwards, Price made a dipping motion with his arm to display the movement of the Boyd Devereaux shot that beat him and offered a one-word expression of his reaction to losing the shutout:

"Calisse!"

Like most Quebec cuss words, it pwewrtains to religion rather than sex or bodily fnction. Calisse, usually used as an expletive or a pejorative noun, means chalice, the golden cup used to serve wine at communion. Price learned it from his road roommate, Francis Bouillon.

Encouraged, by Marc de Foy of the Journal de Montréal, to expand his French vocabulary, Price said "I'll try, but it's tough, man."

Tougher, one would suspect, than making 28 savves against a team that came into the Bell Centre riding a hot streak.

Saku Koivu got to Vesa Toskala in the first period, scored again early in the second and goals by Andrei Kostitsyn and Alex Kovalev put this one out of reach.

"It was nice not to be booed," said Christopher Higgins, who had six shots on goal and was part of a season-best cycling game that kept the puck hemmed in the Leafs end for long stretches.

"We finally played the same way at home as we do on the road," Higgins said. "Everyone was pulling in the same direction.

"That's how we have to play to be effective."

And Price has beaten Toronto three times ... hostie!

Aftermath:

On the play leading to the Canadiens' goal, Andrei Kostitsyn somehow slammed Bryan McCabe's left hand and wrist into the glass just insiide the Canadiens blueline. It's broken and he'll be gone for a while. Big blow to the Leafs. McCabe had played 21 of the game's 48 minutes when he was hurt. Leafs thought it was a cheap shot.

3P 2:00:

One more PP. No Leaf miracles tonight.

3P Break:

Carbo comes back with the Chipchura line against Sundin. Big confidence builder for young guys.

3P 4:06:

And there goes the shutout. Boyd Devereaux on a 40-footer.

3P 6:28:

McCabe hasn't returned. Higgins hustle produces another PP.

3P Break:

Leafs have managed only four shots this period. Did they leave their game at Buona Notte after flying in from Atlanta?

And some cretins are causing problems  behind the leafs' bench.

Assholes in expensive seats.

Show some class.

3P 10:00:

Four goals 5-on-5. This must be killing Cherry ... the more because the Leafs haven't gooned it up .. yet.

3P 11:28:

With McCabe injured and out of the play, Canadiens break away and Kovalev makes it 4-0.

His 14th.

3P Break:

How can a team that's sucked so bad look so good?

3P 15:00:

Mark Streit channels Bobby Orr.  Then just one great shift after another. And Ryder comes THIS close.

3P 17:30:

Another great shift for the Koivu line. And then a dominant one by Chipchura's line, ending with McCable flat on his stomach covering the puck.

3P 19:40:

Again Max against Sundin.

3P 20:00:

20 minutes from a huge statement win. And 428 comments through two.

Between periods:

How's the revived first line doing? Saku Koivu and Chris  Higgins have seven of the team's 14 shots. Sergei has none, but he's been all over the Leafs' end with hiss linemates ... Carey Price has been outstanding.

2P 00:00:

Great PK, and Price waas steady as aa rock.  Then Ian White hauls down Sergei ... no call.

2P Break:

This a weirdly dominant 13-shot performance. Mark Streit just pestered the lumbering Hall Gill half to death. The Leafs look slow and a tad confused when the Canadiens start cycling.

2P 7:00:

You know what would bbe great? If Ryder scored.

2P 7:30:

Let's hope the ""defensive" game doesn't start here.

2P 8:43:

Kovy waits ... waits ... D plays off him ... then finds Komisarek at the point and AK redirects it

3-0

Toskala: 3 goals on 12 shots

2P Break:

Shots are 21-11. Another 40-shot barrage on Price? That Leaf PP was scary.

2P 11:24:

Leafs PP. Not good. Momentum had shifted. Mad scramble andd Tom the Bomb playing stickless. Heroic PK work by Lapierre, Bouillon, Hamrlik ... everyone, really.

2P Break:

Your Montreal Canadiens just played their best three minutes of the season. A cycling clinic in the Leafs' end, keyed by the resurgent Koivu line

2P 14:11:

Koivu, who was great in Philly, is on fire again tonight.

2P 16:30:

Canadiens have two goals on eight shots. Crazy. Leafs have 16 on Price.

2P 16:51:

Hey Don Cherry: Blow our captain!

Perfect pass from Higgins and it's 2-0

2P 19:07:

The name "KOSTITSYN" seems to leave no room on the jersey for a first initial.

2P 20:00:

Lapierre against Sundin.

2P 20:00:

Statistically, Leafs are the best second-period team in the league.

Santa hats:

One of my favourite annual scoreboard features. Pleks favours an over-the-eyebrows hip-hop look. Andrei Markov smiles and offers greetings in Russian.

Between periods:

Leafs outhit Canadiens 12-6 ... Michael Ryder played 3:33 ... Tomas Plekanec was 6-2 on faceoffs, Canadiens 12-8 ... Canadiens had six giveaways to 3 for Toronto ... Mike Komisarek and Andrei Markov played 8:40, Bryan McCabe 10

1P 00:00:

Dandenault hustle negates possible icing.

1P 2:00:

O'Byrne has been steady tonight. And Max lapierre is skating  hard. Sundin whines about an icing call.

1P Break:

Price has made 10 saves, Toskala 4. Toronto forecheck is causing some distress.

1P 4:00:

Crowd is chanting "67!"

1P Break:

All four lines are skating. Shots are 7-5 Leafs, but Canadiens are in rhythm and Price  looks very steady.

1P 10:31:

Firt NHL point for Sergei. But not the last

1P 11:00:

Koivu line against Bell, Belak and Kilger. And the Captain breaks the ice with a backhand from a ridiculous angle.

1-0

1P 12:30:

Sergei with Lapierre and Dandenault after the break.

1P 12:40:

First wave doesn't do much. And neither does second.

1P 14:47:

I think other teams have figured out Price's up-the-boards clearing attempts. First PP.

1P 16:23:

Great chances for Chipchura line. Then Kilger clobbers Gorges.

1P 19:08:

Already, a penalty. McCabe interferes with Chipchura. Komisarek makes good stick play  on Sundin's pass. Leafs are crashing the net. They kill the penalty, bbut a lot of prssure.

1P 19:21:

Koivu line against Wellwood

1P 20:00:

Anthem singer Brigitte Marchand is breaking wine glasses at Brunoise.

1P And your referee is ...:

Kerry Fraser. Over/under on the number of times TV catches Carbo chirping, grimacing at a call, leaning over the boards and either whistling or banging a stick: 25

1P Comments:

400 is not an unreasonable expectation. Later we'll draw for a game-work protective cup.

1P 20:00:

Pleks line, Markov and Komisarek to start against Sundin line, McCabe and Kaberle

Boone reverse jinx:

The Leafs, easily ... bet your Christmas shopping money on it.

Mats F. Sundin:

Needs one goal to tie Teemu Selanne at 540, 26th in NHL history. Next targets Stan
Mikita, 541, and Maurice Richard, 544

Faces in the crowd:

Two guys in section 403 wearing blue and white KISS wigs, faces painted in the same colours

Pre-game ritual:

Two hours before the puck drops, Carey Price was sitting six rows behind the Canadiens bench, staring at the ice and rolling the shaft of a foirwards' stick back and forth in his hands.

I don't what was said, but I do know that the administrators of this site have put up with more than their share of crap since the opening of this site. Ladies and gentlemen. this is a free site, moderated by three seasoned sports columnists who most certainly have many other things they could be doing. It is the one site that gives anglophone habs fans all the info and analysis they need, from a Montrealer's perspective. It also gives us an open forum to express opinions and share ideas - something almost unheard of here in Quebec for anglophone sports fans. I think the rules are both clear and reasonable. I also think that the moderators of this site and knowledgable enough and experienced enough to know what is tolerable and what isn't. We are not entitled to this site, nor are we entitled to the services required to maintain it. Let's stop acting like it!

Agreed ... now let's talk hockey!

Two strong games in a row! Great job, Les Boys. Back-to-back 60-minute efforts. And I appreciated the strong showing vs the Laffs -- and esp. in December!! It felt real good tonight. My last post was after a very poor effot . . . so it's only right I post after the Canadiens play so well. Re: Maurice - others have commented, so I will be brief. He obviously commented without seeing any replay. Even the Toronto TV Cheerleaders said is was "freak"-ish. Maurice was trying to deflect attention away from a rather poor showing by his team and trying to defend his hurt player. However, his words are irresponsible. Best of luck to McCabe in his recovery . . . hate to see anyone hurt with so nasty a break (three, actually!)

Thank you very much for making a post about the game. Much prefer to read this over all the bickering and whining. This is not a forum for people to vent their inadequacies or curry favour using the martyr mentality, everyone. It's a place to talk hockey and occasionally (I hope) a chat room to wish others well on personal matters. If you want to rant and rave, go to McGill metro station and do it with the rest of the schizophrenics.

Thanks. i guess I touched a nerve though. I received an email from killjoy. kilroy's picture
File this one under "Things Boone doesn't want you to know". An entire thread where people supported me below was removed. Don't bother asking anyone why.

Mattee.'s picture
Well Kilroy, if you are Gilles Poisson, I just wanted to say thanks for the excellent posts, both as kilroy and GP. I don't really see why you should be banned. I read every single post last night and I also copied the thread that has since been deleted, and I was going to bring it up to Dave and Mike, but apparently they already know about it. All the best.

kilroy's picture
Thanks Mattee. They know about it alright.

About Kevin Lowe and Kevin Prendagast being at the game is interesting as i always thought the Habs should look their way for a trade as they have a lot of interesting forwards on their team and in the system. They are the brain trust of the Edmonton Oilers , by the way , and have a lot of talent which doesn't mean it all fits in the mould and i'm sure they would like to do a little tinkering. Edmonton used to be affiliated with the Bulldogs a few years past and they are familiar with our system as we are of theres. Jared Stoll (CR) , Raffi Torres (LW) have been in the doghouse lately and they have names like Schremp , Pouliot , O'Mara and Nash in their system to name a few and a few heavies , one i'm sure you know. Just food for thought. Also Lowe and Prets are from the Montreal area so they may be here just for a visit to their old stomping grounds , who knows.

I found Kilroy's posts in the past pretty informative and he knows his hockey and has a different point of view than many but some of the redundant stuff i've read or to be truthful stopped reading in the past weeks makes me wonder what's going on , and i don't really know what kilroy did but i'm sure he's served his term and should be given another chance probably with a warning but who am i to say anything as i'm no angel.

doug's picture
RE: Kilroy, and apparently poisson, i have enjoyed his posts as well. I have no idea what the offense is and would hope that the punishment fits the crime but leave that in the hands of the authorities, as per my below post.

kilroy's picture
The offense is there for everyone to see, no more no less. The revisionists are very selective about which posts they delete. My fauxs pas are left for all to glare at, while more offensive posts by pet posters, one in particular which initiated this, are deleted. Wouldn't want to embarrass our buddies However, I anticipated this and copied the page prior to Herr Goebbels getting ahold of it and will post it on my website later.

doug's picture
I love this site and it's been an invaluable source of fun, information, and exchange for over a year. I hope that we can keep it above board and keep Dave and Mike interested and motivated - that's a very tall order when they have day jobs and it's always a fight against time to keep away people with goals beyond serving our community. I don't have a position on Kilroy/Poisson or Moey or Grabs the Puck. I am 39 years old and just enjoy this site's information and exchange of ideas. I would simply ask that we all treat each other civilly and not put the site's administrators in the role of high school vice principal. I think it's pretty obvious what will put you at risk of being removed: a. personal attacks b. swearing c. racism d. other similar related "hate crimes" I don't think we need a "code of conduct" to be posted to know that this site is a privilege, not a right; that's common sense when a site asks you to register. I have had hockey-related disagreements with several posters and have posted criticisms of Mr. Boone as well, a man who I have great respect for because of his aforementioned somewhat selfless devotion to us and for his great wit. I have not been banned nor do I fear such action. Use your brains and act as you would if not behind the veil of internet secrecy and you'll be allowed to continue. Do something stupid (which I'm not directing to Kilroy or anyone else; I have no idea nor do I care) and run the risk of lifetime banishment. It's a moderated forum for a real newspaper, not a blog run by some guy out of his basement - that's part of the power and scope of it.

kilroy's picture
I have no wish to argue with you Doug. I'm not looking for advocates either. This is not directed at you personally. The power and scope of "it" is no bigger than the people running it. If I feel it's abused, I'll exert my own. I swore, yeah. I see it pretty much every day here. Also, in a previous post that has been whitewashed, I apologized for it and provided the weak defense that it was provoked. Personal attacks seem to be okay depending on who is involved. As for racism or anything "hate", I've spent a good part of my life fighting that.

kilroy's picture
So, like I was saying, my account (Gilles Poisson)was deleted. I'm not sure why unless it was for profanity in which case the penalty is harsh and the decision was certainly made with prejudice. I would like my account to be reactivated please. Thank you.

kilroy's picture
It would be too easy to register another account with a variation of the handle I used. I think my thoughts are unique enough to distinguish myself. But this is a matter of principle and I won't let it rest without at least an explanation. I apologize to everybody this doesn't concern. I feel like Lenny Bruce. Not the funny one, the obsessed one.

Please re-read your last sentence and then ask yourself (again) why you think your posts keep disappearing. Your personal vendetta has gone far enough. The Original 24 Cups

About McCabe's injury. Could it be, after all these years, finally payback for Sittler breaking Lafleur's wrist.

RH's picture
I should flag that as offensive comparing a third rate, overpaid windbag like McCabe to the "flower". Sheesh!

RH's picture
I was thinking about this the other day but could never remember to post it. All this booing of Michael Ryder reminds me of when Andres Galarraga wore the horns for much of the '88 or '89 season for the 'Spos. I think it was '89. At any rate, he couldn't buy a hit, was striking out mercilessly and we, the fans really turned ugly on him didn't we? Anyway, he went to Colorado, adjusted his stance and the rest is history.

RH's picture
I'm not in tune with all this computer lingo so, I had to google the word 'troll'. I get it now. Poisson, gone fishing, trolling. It all makes sense. However, I have to say that I've never found anything Gilles Poisson said, provocative. I find he has a good sense of humor and though he may be a little crass at times, I enjoy his witty takes on everything Habs and George Parros. By the way, I for some reason, decided to google Gilles Poisson as well and, it turns out Gilles Poisson was a wrestler back in the seventies and eighties and is enshrined in our Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame. It also turns out that I didn't even know we had a Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame. Youtube even has a clip of said Poisson wrestling one Mr. Dino Bravo. Now there's a guy who was a Montreal icon.

mjames's picture
I agree. What did Poisson do that was negative? I read through the various posts and I did not see anything that deserved banishment. Could someone please enlighten us? It hardly seems correct if someone is cancelled based on whim. If that is going to be case then it should be included in the rules. I have seen people make racist comments in error and they are still around. I seem to recall the lady with horse picture made a racist comment a few weeks back. While it served to expose her ignorance all was forgiven. I think people should have some recourse if they feel they have been treated unfairly. Those are my thoughts. mjames

The Teacher's picture
Agreed.

kilroy's picture
Thanks mjames. Problem is, I didn't go to the Habs Summit and Yeats and grabbed the Cup did. It's that simple. I don't grovel at Stubbs' feet. I have a hard time believing Boone had anything to do with it. My posts here are pretty hard on the Habs sometimes so obviously I'm not out to make friends. But this is wrong.

kilroy's picture
That is the beauty of the internet. I am a "troll" because a small minded individual has decided I am a troll. And all he has to do is send an email to an equally small minded individual and I get banned. I have never initiated any ill will to any poster. I enjoy posting here. But I've never backed away from anything in my life and if you want to fight dirty you picked the wrong guy.

ClaytonM's picture
I guess I shouldn't bother catching up on what's new on the site, eh? If habs fans are at each other's throats after beating the laffs, I can only imagine the playground mentality when they were on their little losing skid. Speaking of which, where's that jag-off east coast habs fan who said they'd never win 2 in a row? Back under his rock? I'm happy they won but thrilled about how they won their last 2 games. They dominated philly and toronto and played THEIR game. It looks like a little winning streak is in the near future. Now is the time for them to build a lead on the pack. Oh, and maurice should stfu until he sees a replay. It was a fluke injury, and he should be happy mcklutz is out. Instead he shoots his mouth off and calls him a premier blue liner??? Too funny.

Chuck V.'s picture
Went to the game tonight and was able to see it from up close. First of all, I have to say that I came away impressed with all of the young players on the team at the moment. They all deserve to be on the team and that could spell the end for Smolinski, Brisebois and (unfortunately) Begin. O'Byrne is great and a huge physical presence and I thought that Gorges played well tonight. Kostitsyn brothers were awesome and the top 2 lines seem to be set for now. Chips and Lapierre were also sound. Chippy has great hockey sense and underrated offensive flair and Max is really fast! Overall great game and good to see them thump the Leafs at home! The Bell Centre was buzzing tonight. Playoff atmosphere

DYCSoccer17's picture
What the hell is Paul Maurice bitching about? McCabe was along the boards and was checked. He jammed his wrist into the boards. I don't see any cheap shot there at all. A. Tits had his left arm around him at the very end of the hit after the contact was made. If anything, A. Tits was pulling him way from the boards. It's too bad that coaches can't be fined for stupidity. Maurice and Carbonneau would be fined the most.

JasonM's picture
I agree. To me it's you eat what you reap. Most of the night there was always a Leaf jersey in front of a Habs player chasing another Leaf with the puck causing interference all night long, eventually someone got fed up and pushed someone out of their way. Long story short McCabe fell awkwardly into the board and hurt himself. It is unfortunate. Yet they cannot go out there and state it was a cheap shot, far worse was done during this game.

lol

likehoy's picture
I's not dirty in any way, if anything it should have been a 2 minute penalty for holding.

I like giles poisson's humour for one thing. Seems like he knows where to pick his sarcasms and fallacies and it's a thinking man's humour, so my hats off to you Gilles, keep up posting, but keep down the profanities. Onto my analysis, Andrei Kostitsyn has been playing like he has something to prove and I love it. It seems like the moment his brother got called up, he was probably feeling the sibling rivalry and has to strut his stuff and prove he's the better brother. And when they play together, they fly, that's the sibling relationship and communication, we'll have many more years with these guys and I'm loving it.

Girth's picture
Agree completely...

mjames's picture
I believe you are spot on in your analysis of AK46. He seems to playing like a man possessed. He has jump, he is finishing his checks, he is back checking and he seems more active in our zone. All in all - much more confidence. If this is the effect SK74 has on AK47 then jr. needs to be kept here based on that alone. As concerns SK74 play, well he has changed Koivu's line. They have a completely different look, a new dimension. They really look like a threat. I think the kid deserves to stay. I have also enjoyed Poisson's comments – one of the more erudite posters. I think I know the posters that went after him. If one reviewed some of their past posts, you would note that most have made racist/sexist comments at one time or another. They must have impunity on this site. Those are my views. mjames

Mattee.'s picture
I will second everything you said. I also happen to enjoy giles poisson's posts. The sarcasm is priceless. With regards to the Kosts Konnection, I'm loving every minute of it. If they keep challenging eachother like that, they'll be filling the net game in and game out. The more the merrier I say.

Chorske's picture
Awesome: forechecking! See what happens when we hurry them up? Also: Sergei's confidence. Koivu's renaissance. Kovy's mastery. Lapierre playing so responsibly. And Kostopoulous- he didn't do anything flamboyant but it felt like every shift he was doing something smart. And STREIT. I don't care what people say, he's awesome- that play where he split the defense in the third period made Toronto look like pylons. Staying out of the penalty box. Not so awesome: Price's glove hand. O'Byrne's tendency to get muddled down the middle. Poor Ryder's bad luck continuing (but some good chances!)- but he played a solid game for a guy who has seen so little playing time. A couple a lacklustre attempts at zone clearing that would've spelled trouble had we been playing a better team. Carbo's ongoing sideshow act. Overall: good times, great game. Lots to be positive about.

mjames's picture
I agree. On occassion I have also suggested more forechecking. I truly belive this complements our team's skill. mjames

agree with most of your first paragraph but all in all yes, it was quite an improvement.

Mattee.'s picture
Carbo's sideshow act. haha. I don't think Price's glove is that bad, it was one of those Alfredson type-use the dman as a screen shot. The shutout will come.

Chorske's picture
You're right- I had a chance to see the replay later and Devereaux made a good move pulling the puck to his forehand and using the Dman screen. Still, the shot was from 35-40 feet out and Price's left hand was down and his left shoulder was dropped. I've seen him do that before and it's a bad habit. But hey, otherwise this kid played brilliantly and it's great to have a Leafkiller again.

what had you said?

Then, where is it? Or did you think we needed to see another "talkin' fish" plaque?

Great game, outstanding effort from everyone. Mike Boone quotes Chris Higgins: "That's the way we have to play to be effective." LET THE TEAM AND THE COACH REMEMBER THAT!!! The way for this team to be successful is to play a really aggressive offensive game and forget about trying to play the trap. Their best games this year - and this was probably THE best - have been played that way. It's when they forget that and try to play a defensive game that they get into trouble. I'll be upset if Ryder is benched next game. He made some outstanding plays. Actually everyone out there deserves to be in the line-up next time, which could create a problem for Carbonneau if Latendresse is recovered. Hopefully the line-up will remain more or less as is, and Smolinski and Brisebois will be used sparingly if at all.

We still measure by inches down here. Lazy as I am, I don't fell like doing the conversion right now, so I'll just assume it's a lot.

Well, tonight's game salvaged my weekend. The little Habs that I coach got waxed this afternoon by the little Rangers 6-1. (I admit it, I'm not the second coming of "Toe.") Is it me or is a "learning experience" never the result of a positive event?

To be fair, when they decide to play hockey, they ain't half bad. That'll do pig, that'll do, indeed!!!

I saw the replay on McCabe's injury about half a dozen times. If the Leafs thought there was a cheap shot by anybody, they are suffering from delusions. Looks like McCabe simply caught his wrist on the boards.

Hey Mike Boones are you home yet? I have a bone to pick with you. Actually, I just wanted to thank you for once again watching the game with us. Your (dry) sense of humour and the way you don't kiss up to all the players like Uber Diplomat Mr. Stubb (jk) has added a dynamic. It has nothing to do with his humor.

It's Kilroy..or Killjoy...depending on how you look at it.

Ahh profanity, the way a feeble mind expresses itself.

You're a sharp one Moey.

I cannot battle with great minds like Zoey and Mr Grabs. But I applaud them for their sense of humour. Except for Mr.Grabs. He's just an idiot. See you tomorrow. Go Habs Go.

OOh... good comeback, did it take you long to come up with that one?

Gilles Poisson's picture
Mr Grabs, your picture just screams "I swear... I'm NOT gay"

It could be the return of the infamous "Jacques-too-tight" but I'm just speculating.

Any man that grabs our cup for us knows what a troll is, I trust The gtc and he doesent smell like fish!

Mademoiselle, with all due respects, Mr. Stubb is every bit as capable of nonsense as the next guy and he proves it every day. Thank you.

Monsieur, Two differnt jobs, one team. I'll leave it at that.

Mademoiselle you are right and the only reason I am admitting as much is that my last post doesnt look funny like I'd hoped. If I was being honest I'd say that Dave Stubbs is a guy that appreciates hockey history and his writing reflects it. Not that flavour of the week stuff,or trade rumours, or articles about which bars the guys hang out at.

I think everybody misunderstands Gilles Poisson humour. I for one enjoy it. It's very ironic and sarcastic. I am not joking. I think your posts might be my favourite.

nope there is a group of web police who don't

HUH???? Phoenix beat the Devils?

My thoughts: Fraser gave his usual biased performance, with few Habs powerplays until the game was decided and some cheap calls in favor of the Leafs. Less Carbonneau chirping shown tonight - but that was probably because he was more relaxed with a commanding lead. Ryder did not look like someone that should be benched let alone traded. I liked O’byrne and the young Russians. Cole on CBC must have been instructed to sing the praises of Price who was very steady except for the week goal, which only he paid for (a shutout lost). Does Mike B still think the Habs goaltending is “a mess”? People who want Koivu traded for almost any rumored return, will likely end up looking as ridiculous as the ones who would have long ago had our lineup stripped of Kovalev. Thankfully the team is managed by BG and good luck to anyone who thinks he can be easily upgraded (including nostalgia lovers who would have a senior citizen like Scotty Bowman takeover).
