Development Camp

posted by Mike Boone at 8h12 EST on Jul 7

The stars of tomorrow (we hope!) will be in town this week at the Canadiens' annual development camp.

On-ice sessions begin 2:30 this afternoon at the Centre Sportif Candiac – 2 Glaces. It's at 10 Radisson in beautiful downtown Candiac on Montreal's south shore.

If you can find the joint – as Pat Hickey and Mike Boone are hoping to – you can watch 30 prospects: three goaltenders (including the just-drafted 6'7" Jason Missiaen) 11 defencemen (including David Fischer, Ryan McDonagh, P.K.  Subban, Yannick Weber and Mathieu Carle), five centres (Olivier Fortier, Ben Maxwell, Brock Trotter) six left wings (big studs Max Pacioretty and Andrew Conboy) and five RWs (Ryan White, James T. Wyman and this year's top pick, Danny Kristo).

On-ice sessions will continue Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The players will also undergo off-ice conditioning (as will Hickey and Boone, if they can find a bar in Candiac).

anyone have any comments about P.K Subban? A Belleville Bull defenceman, that, IMO, should be converted vinto a winger

Chris's picture
I don't think Subban's unique skill set would be best utilized as a winger. He's got a laser beam shot, has excellent vision and is a great skater. He's still growing into his body, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him develop into a Francis Bouillon type build, combined with excellent offensive skills. His positioning remains a concern from what I have seen of him, but that can be taught.

Just saw this on the TSN site.... The Montreal Canadiens signed free agent forward Ryan Flinn to a one-year, two-way contract on Monday. As per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed. Flinn, a Halifax, Nova Scotia, native has seven seasons of AHL experience along with three seasons in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings. Last season, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound winger played in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons and the Hershey Bears, collecting three goals and one assist and 135 penalty minutes in 41 games.

What rating would Tavares get Gotta love those Habs.

Chris's picture
If you mean on the Hockey's Future website, I would probably guess he will get a 8.0-9.0 rating with a B or C. I've been following that website for about 5 or 6 years and the only 10 I ever saw was for Crosby. Their two top prospects are Jonathan Toews (9.0B) and Erik Johnson (9.0B). I would be surprised to see Tavares (or Stamkos, for that matter) get that high.

So how high can these rating go anyway? Gotta love those Habs.

Hi Robert, did you fix up a ride OK with Moey or Teach to the Bar-B- Q. I have about 10 pos. responces to date. If anyone is interested, thet can contact me here in Belleville or your site Robert.

Robert L's picture
Nothing solid yet Ian. Moey has my e-mail from my site but has not contacted me as of yet. I want to go very badly but I probably will only decide that week. I have the bring my oldest daughter to CHEO on Tuesday the 22nd for an operation on her finger and two days before that, on the 20th, we are mulling going to the Paul McCartney free concert in Quebec City. That week is a pay week for me, but I might be over ruled by my better half. Anyone wishing to communicate with Ian through my site's e-mail can feel free to do so, and I will pass along any info to him.

MacCartney is old.

Robert L's picture
Yeah, and Elvis is dead and all that! He's still good to me and my wife is a young Beatles fan!

William_Holden_Is_Hot's picture
Death does not prevent Mr. Presley from being Da Bomb. So there.

Robert L's picture
Of course, but he doesn't get to go off much anymore. And Chuck Berry was the real true king of rock and roll!

Elvis was a hero to most/ but he never meant *** to me/ he was straight out racist/ the sucker was simple and plain/ motherf#$k him and John Wayne

Robert, I really do need reading glasses, but where exactly is the link to your e-mail address? I was scrolling through your blog yesterday, couldn't locate it. Saw lots of pics though!!!

Robert L's picture
Sorry, Moey, it should be at the top. I keep having to re-enable it, but it should remain there.

MikeL's picture
it's in the writeup

Robert L's picture
It is, LMAO. Here I was on Google for 10 minutes, looking it up!

I'll be in Candiac most of the week. (My girlfriend is real impressed!) I'll try and report back some observations to complement the excellent work messers Hickey and Boone.

Great , the more eyes the better.

C-Dawg's picture
I'm kind of interested in Brock Trotter. He's a center, has a scoring touch, and we need someone like that. How far away is he from fighting for a spot in Montreal?

Morenz7's picture
There was some weirdness surrounding his departure from Denver U, too, no? Something about personal issues, and some sort of dispute with his coach...

MikeL's picture
He is 5'9 and wasn't drafted. He also played half the year in the NCAA and half in Hamilton, so he is likely a project in Hamilton for a couple years.

C-Dawg's picture
Yeah, he supposedly broke some team or school rule and " decided to go pro" when we picked him up. But, he was their leading scorer and had 13 goals and 18 assists in 24 games for the University of Denver so he does have some offensive talents.

Robert L's picture
Curiously, on the Canadiens.com official site, Trotter is listed on the team roster page along with Pavel Valentenko and newly acquired Alex Henry. The other new additions are, of course Laraque, Tanguay and Denis. http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=TeamPlayers&type=ros...

snowdonsteve's picture
sorry guys no bars in candiac... but it's 'milf' contry so keep your eyes open and don't be shy to wave that press card ! Go HABS Go

Drive_For_25's picture
I hope Pacioretty has a great camp and get put in Hamilton for a few months and make the big team by late Jan. or Feb. Got a good leader in Red Berenson and a solid program in Michigan but they lost most of their top guys who were seniors. I think he might develop a lot more in Hamilton.

Robert L's picture
I kind of have high hopes for this kid too, but I fear that if he is promoted ahead of his learning curve, we'll get all the same talk as we did with Latendresse needing to be sent to Hamilton and other nonsense.

MikeL's picture
Just a reminder to anyone that doesn't recognize some of the names, check out Hockey's Future. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/teams/montreal_canadiens

SmartDog's picture
Thanks - cool resource. It has McDonagh and Fischer rated higher than O'Byrne... any idea why? ~Listen to the smart dog!

Chris's picture
Fischer is no longer rated higher...he is rated 9th in the organization while O'Byrne is rated 5th. Hockey's Future have a slightly more involved rating process...O'Byrne is rated a 7.0A, while Fischer is rated 8.0C. The number grade is obvious, but what is equally important is the letter grade. The A basically means that he projects to be a sure-fire bet to reach his potential, which they have pegged as 7.0 (a 3-4 defenceman). Fischer has more potential at 8.0 (so a potential No. 2 defenceman) but the C indicates that could drop as much as 2 points (i.e. he could peak at a third pairing defenceman). I typically like their system, and it beats the living hell out of Pierre McGuire, for whom there seems to be 20-30 can't miss stars in every single draft.

Love that last line , I'm anxious to see if the Andrew Conboy kid has wheels?

Mike Boone's picture
I don't know about wheels, but they say he has fists.

Sounds good to me.
