The club's press releases:
MONTREAL (July 3, 2008) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey today announced the
acquisition of defenceman Greg Pateryn along with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ second round pick in 2010, in
return for forward Mikhaïl Grabovski.
Greg Pateryn, 18, was selected in the fifth round by the Maple Leafs, 128th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry
Draft in Ottawa. Last season, in his first campaign in the United States Hockey League, Pateryn led the Ohio
Jr. Blue Jackets defencemen with 27 points (3 goals, 24 assists) in 60 games. He also led his team with 145
penalty minutes. The Royal Oak, Michigan native was also named to the Eastern Division Team in the USHL
Prospects/All-Star Game and received USHL Defensive Player of The Week honors in March.
Pateryn, 6-2, 212 pounds, will join the University of Michigan for the 2008-09 season.
Mikhaïl Grabovski was selected by the Canadiens in the fifth round, 150th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry
Draft. He played 27 career regular-season games over the past two seasons with the Canadiens, recording nine
points (3 goals, 6 assists).
And ...
Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signingof free agent defenceman Alex Henry to a one-year contract (2008-09). The Club also announced that
goaltender Cédrick Desjardins has agreed to a two-year contract (2008-09 and 2009-2010). As per club
policy, financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Henry, 28, suited up for the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League last season. He recorded
16 points (3 goals, 13 assists) and was second on the team with 142 penalty minutes. He was one of only two
defencemen to play in all 80 regular-season games.
A native of Elliot Lake, Ontario, Henry spent the past two seasons in the Nashville Predators’ organization
after signing as a free agent on August 21, 2006. The 6’5” and 220 lbs defenceman played 175 NHL games with
Edmonton (3), Washington (38) and Minnesota (134).
A third round selection, 67th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 1998, Henry was claimed twice on waivers
during his NHL career, in October 2002 by the Washington Capitals and in October 2003 by the Minnesota Wild.
Henry also played in 332 AHL games, including three seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs from 1999 to 2002.
Cédrick Desjardins, 22, had a tremendous season in 2007-08, leading the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones to
the Kelly Cup Championship in just his second professional season. The Cyclones also won the league’s regularseason
title with 115 points. Desjardins posted a 16-4-2 record, had five shutouts, maintained a 1.92 goalsagainst
average and a .934 save percentage in 22 games. He led all ECHL goaltenders during the playoffs with
a 1.84 goals-against average, posting a 11-4 record and a .939 save percentage in 16 games. Desjardins also
played 12 games with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs last season (4-4-1, 3.04 GAA and .909 save %).
A native of Edmundston, New Brunswick, Desjardins spent four seasons in the QMJHL (2002 to 2006)
with Rimouski and Québec, posting 67 wins in 128 regular-season games. In his second consecutive
participation to the Memorial Cup in 2006, he led the Remparts to the tournament championship. He was
named the Memorial Cup Top Goaltender and was named to the tournament’s All-Star Team.
This fall, Desjardins will take part in his second training camp with the Canadiens.
I think we have so much young talent that Bob was forced to move him. I thnk Grabvoski will be a great player for the Leafs. He will be one of their top players in the upcoming season. I thnk he is capable of 3o goals if given proper playing time. Too bad we had to send him to the Leafs , but I trust Bob Gainey and his tactics on this one.
glad grabs is gone..had a "me"attitude..Bob was well rid of him...
I'm probably not the first to say this, but so much for the Kovy-Grabs-Tits line.
I just like the sound of Kovalev grabbing a handful...
hiya prof!
Don't normally post but just to suggest something...on the line you offered, who was going to pass the puck? I'm not aure anyone on that line would have wanted to be the playmaker
no, but they might play for TO!
it's too bad we couldn't fit him in. that stunt he pulled on the westcoast roadtrip sealed his fate. off to t.o. enjoy missing the playoffs!!!!!
Great move by gainey, grabs was not gonna make our team again this year. No way grabs was gonna accept a qualifying offer with a 2 way deal. It was either trade him now,let him bolt to russia or risk putting him on waivers and losing him or nothing. We also pick up a big dman in return, a second round pick which will probably be between #31-40(40 being very generous) and we clear up a roster spot plus cap space. Great job mr.gainey.
where's habswin? i'm hoping for his response to this solid signing
Happiest guy after this trade - Kosto. He doesn't have to be the one to revenge hits by dropping the gloves.
Excellent news! I still have the vision of Laraque owning the puck behind the net against us last year.
haha me too
I'm surpised that we signed Laraque. In any case, welcome home! Props to the posters who suggested this earlier (I know there is at least one of you around).
Anyone think this signing is (in part) due to how Lucic played during the Boston series? He was a beast and we didn't have much of an answer aside from a banged-up Komo.
Carbo once said (in response to a question on the team's lack of an enforcer) that he'd take one that could play a regular shift, but didn't want a goon just for the sake of having one. Laraque was one of the guys mentioned, along with Neil as guys that were an example of that.
No question that Bob wants us to get bigger. Laraque will make all the other players on the team play bigger as well.
i was saying just last night that we were missing the pest-type player on our team that will make teams hate to play us...laraque's value is underrated but it doesn't only make us a little bigger...but it makes us tougher and toughness is often worth more than size.
He is the undisputed heavyweight champion in the NHL.
La-ROCK!
Great signing ... great price and term.
This is awesome!

Well, that's one kind of "impact" forward. lol
Hey BG, thanks for taking my suggestion!
damn you beat me to it lol. Thats what I get for having to register.
maybe it's actually guy lafleur venting out some anger.
LMAO, might be!
TSN is reporting Boyle has officially been asked to waive his NTC
~Listen to the rooster! He knows what he's saying!
Looks like he might end up in San Jose. It will be interesting to see who TB gets in return.
prob not marleau otherwise we'd hear "marleau has been asked to waive his trade clause"
Let the Bugs give you the straight dope,
Good reasons or bad; fantastic skills or not, there was NO ROOM for Grabby on the CH roster. Agreed? Like you all said, who's spot does he take? He's a top2 line center that gets bowled over by bad breath, nevermind bodychecks. So, Koivu or Plecky? Which one is out?
C'mon.
But look on the bright side, and I'm especially adressing all the ridiculous Leaf fans, out there,
He'll see some ice in Toranna! I'll tell ya that fer nuthin'! And Habfans who like him will get to see alot of'im on CBC, right? Hey, I like'im; I'll watch.
But I like Koivu and Plecky better.
Bottom line? For straight-thinking HabNationers?
Feh.
We got more where Grabby came from.
Peace Out.
What about "defence wins championships"
Why don't we go after boyle at 6.7mil, which leaves us with roughly 4.1mill.
Then I say we buy out Dandy or put him on waivers and go after a 3- 4 million $ player (Naslund). Leaving us with roughly 2- 2.5 mil for next year. (AT which point we can go after a IMPACT- FORWARD at trade deadline)
I’m all GO for top 4 pairing of Boyle-hammer-komi-markov
And we have a powerplay quarterback that shoots right (WOW!) now that would make us contenders (more than demitra or Jagr can)
I see how well the money for Boyle worked for TBL this season. No to Boyle. He is a little small anyways.
