By granting free agency to players at a younger age, the new, post-lockout CBA was supposed to restrain the size of contracts.
More players hit the UFA market, and the supply-demand equation kicks in, keeping expenditures down.
It hasn't worked out that way, Eric Duhatschek writes in the Globe, because teams are locking up young talent long-term before they can become free agents: Jarome Iginla, Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry in Anaheim.
The Canadiens, one would hope, will try to do this with Mike Komisarek, Christopher Higgins, Tomas Plekanec and, before he becomes a UFA in 2011, Andrei Kostitsyn.
So the market ends up with fewer UFAs commanding astronomical – and, in some cases, absurd – prices.
Chicago is paying nearly $20 million a season for two goaltenders, Nikolai Khabibulin and Cristobal Huet, and a defenceman, Brian Campbell. Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon told Duhatschek: "I wish I was a player."
“On July 1, you always overpay – and then it trickles down, and into August, you get the bargains," Tallon added. "But we had to make a statement. We have created a buzz here in this market.
“We're starting to sell more and more tickets, more and more sponsorships. We decided that we'd try to make an impact today to continue that momentum … and giving our fans something to get excited about. So when you do that, you're going to overpay.”
Duhatschek believes "the lesson of the first day of free agency was the same as it always was – before or after the NHL lockout. Any player with the patience to go to unrestricted free agency and a willingness to move on to a new team can reap significant financial rewards for his trouble."
As Mats Sundin and Marian Hossa would say, amen to that.
To all the true Canadiens fans from HIO.
I am fed up with the anti-Canadiens rants of HabsWin09 and HabsAttack. There isn't much else to add to their sickening and relentless posts that criticize every single aspect of what the team does and is without merit. Both are counterproductive to the spirit of this site.
Most of us come here for enlightenment, insight, enjoyment and perspective, but this pair, under endless pseudonyms have managed to ruin a good thing here.
I have made many friends and acquaintences at HIO, but this site has turned ugly and needs a moderator or an IP blocker to shut these two souless devils down.
It just isn't fun in here anymore for me and I'm certain that their attitude turns many people off from posting their thoughts, feelings, and ideas for others to read.
Many of us have attempted to ignore them and now I am asking HIO to try to do something about it.
Anyone who feels as I do about this can add their names to this post in reply.
My protest is to be as annoying as they are being, by adding this little rant of mine to every single comment they post.
Yours in fandom,
Robert L
Seems like your idea may be the best way to go...and yes, this used to be a very good site. The majority of posters here don't even know how much better it was a year to a year and a half ago. Many of the regulars from that time have found it just isn't worth visiting this site anymore, and it's because of the clowns. For the most part, I ignore them and do my best not to reply. But it doesn't seem to help at all. They do not go away. They just multiply and come up with new nicknames. There is constructive criticism (something that has alway been a welcome part of this site), there is criticism without basis (not the best kind, but tolerable), and their is the type of jackass that you speak of. HIO should do something.
I'm one of those posters. Love the content of the site, really starting to hate the general mood of the comments on here. I'm the worst one to be on here to because I'm way too quick to jump into an argument to stand up for something I believe in (which is that we have an excellent hockey club) so I end up wasting my time looking to reply to all the idiots on this site. Hope things change by next season.
I agree. I was here that long ago and although didn't start posting right away the atmosphere was much better. I do not understand why the same people (obviously) are allowed to repeatedly create new user names and return to the site. I guess HIO is just concerned about the # of posts they get at this point. There seems to be no moderators at all...I understand Dave Stubbs is on Olympic duty and Mike Boone cannot do everything, but come on.....
Well put and Thank you!

Everybody should just "IGNORE".
You guys are right, I'm encouraging him. It's just so easy... OK - IGNORING
I'm going to the previous thread.
Can we stop all the bickering...it is pushing real posts down and making it a waste of time to wade through to determine who is talking and who is bickering.
Learn from last year people! On a slow day Habsattack is good for entertainment. On a day when there is real news to discuss - ignore him. Just don't take the bait.
~Listen to the smart dog!
True that! We all had a good ol time last summer with pffft and his ilk.
Wait. There is more than one of you coming up with this stuff??? Thats the funniest post of the day. By the way, I suspect they may be laughing AT you and not WITH you...
"We're all laughing here."
You and your 10 multiple personalities?
no, imaginary friends
~Listen to the smart dog!
can we talk hockey please ... i stopped posting at ESPN because of this sorta thing
Ditto....
We need Stubbs (too bad he is on Olympic duty) or SOMEONE to do something......
just stop enticing him ... that's where it starts
Agree, have not responded to Habs Win09 since last night and will not.
Just fed up of him responding to every post with the same crap.
Glencross to Flames.
PREDICTION: Michel Therien first coach fired this year.
no not really, seeing as the Dallas Star's won a cup with Gainey leading the way, and Therrien has not proven himself, he has gone far with a great team, but never done much with garbage.
Dallas stars sign Avery.
Good pickup for them.
Congrats, habs attack. You've just written the perfect example of a "pot calling the kettle black" post.
And it's spelled "chastising".
