Déja vu all over again

posted by Mike Boone at 14h02 EST on Jul 1

TSN reports as many as four teams have tabled offers for Mats Sundin, including one undisclosed team that is dangling a whopping $10
million per year on a multi-year contract.

For Canadiens fans, echoes of Brendan Shanahan and Daniel Brière.

$10 million for a 37-year-old player? WTF!

Advice for Bob Gainey from that old world-weary general manager Kenny Rogers:

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run ...

Mats to Montreal: Thanks so much for driving the price up.

If we're going to follow the (appropriate) gambling analogy, you also have to concede that sometimes you just have to play for the river card. You can be smart and tactical up to a point. But if that's all you do, you'll never be the last person at the table. You have to occasionally make an all-in play for that all-or-nothing river card. And Gainey just doesn't have the guts for that kind of high-stakes play. As a gambler, and as a GM, he's overrated. "Just because you are wearing a new Maple Leafs sweater, does not mean you make the rules around here, young man."

FORD TOUGH's picture
Sundin a classy Guy? I think not! J.P. Barry, has said that Montreal is going in a different direction! That's funny. Montreal was not until today I guess. This different direction came about today. Yeah Right!!!! Both Sundin & Barry are CRAP. Gainey should have got the hint that Montreal was not on Sundins list when he did not want to meet face to face with Gainey. SUNDIN IS TRASH................

Chicago signs UFA defenceman Brian Campbell to an 8 year deal worth $56.8-million

sidhu's picture
Campbell gets $7.1m per year. Wonder what Streit - another puck moving defenseman - will command.

T-roy West's picture
Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, has said that Montreal is going in a different direction.

sidhu's picture
Rolston and Roscival would be fine with me.

I think Boone has opened a new thread at the top of the main page that he intends to just update. He has made a couple of additions so far. I am not sure though.

Mike Boone's picture
Boone should have used the live-blog format for this, but it's too late to start now.

that Boone fella seems like a smart dude, he'll not make the same mistake twice.

The Teacher's picture
LMAO another line of comedy is just fine :)

mrhabby's picture
was just watching TSN .agent for sundin says HABS going in other direction on sundin.

T-roy West's picture
David: I heard him say the same thing. I wonder what that meant.

Connecticut Man1's picture
Huh?

Gary320's picture
Lalime to Buffalo Confirmed.

coutNY's picture
I am glad it was slow work day.... I wonder if 5 hours straight of refreshing is a skill I can bring to my mid year review. See yeah ladies & gents, I'll check back later!

Connecticut Man1's picture
Suddenly quiet on this thread. Did Gainey trade all of the other fans? heh

The Teacher's picture
Mais non, Gainey is Chief sitting still.

coutNY's picture
For what - We have plenty right now... not that we couldn't put it toward Halak salary, but we still have around $10.5 million free

gmd's picture
Gainey has already said he won't buy him out.

Robert L's picture
Yeah but we all know we can't trust Gainey. Says any *** that pops into his head. :)

The Teacher's picture
LMAO too funny

actually they bought out two before last season Cullimore and a Finn who's name I won't attempt to spell.

Robert L's picture
Salmelainen, Tony....too many vowels. Leafs signed him to play with the Marlies.

The Teacher's picture
The Finns have too many vowels, the Czechs have too many consonants, why don't we put them together in a box and jumble them up? ;) lol

Robert L's picture
They bought out Breezer three years ago, but that's different, LOL.

Y's picture
For what it's worth, Fan590 and Hockeybuzz repoting Laffs are talking to Redden and McCabe is bye-bye

They're stuck with McCabe. Whether he plays or not, they're paying him full salary. Redden can find a better situation then TOR.

Robert L's picture
Yup, the pucking Leafs dog next door just confirmed.

gmd's picture
How will they get rid of McCabe with his NTC? Buy him out?

Tell him to stay at home and pay him , Hardball.

gmd's picture
I wish I could get that deal.

Robert L's picture
They will sign Sean Avery and make him his room mate.

Y's picture
That's too cruel, you don't want the guy killing himself now

Robert L's picture
Would they ever butt heads!

We trade Huet for a 2nd round pick and now he signs with the Hawks for 22.5 million for 4 years , there's something wrong with this picture. Who got shafted?

Chorske's picture
I think Chicago overpaid. The question is, were we willing to pay Huet what HE thought he was worth, given that Carey Price was set to become a #1? The answer, clearly, is no, because he turned down 4 mil plus in Washington. That said, we would've lost him today for nothing. Bob got a 2nd round pick for him. I think we did OK.

Y's picture
Hard to say, but the Hawks have a very large headache in goal now.

shh, don't bring logic into it

ebk - I Love it. Habbie going somewhere.

Robert L's picture
The Hawks offered us Khabilin for him only.

TommyB's picture
On the goaltender situation....this coming year Halak gets a $350K raise, bringing him to $850K. The same thing Price will get this year. Price has one more year after this, still at $850K before he gets to negotiate. So, in a weird twist, whatever raise Halak gets, he will be making more than Price next year. No point to this, really, just kind of weird that your backup will make more than your starter. Of course, this is assuming both are here two years down the road. This is where I wish Gainey would be a bit more proactive contract-wise. If Carey Price shows this year what we are expecting from him, and puts up some really good numbers (or dare I even suggest it, we win the Cup), Gainey should get Price signed long term and not wait until July 1st two years from now.

coutNY's picture
Would you going to give him the $1.35 million bonus Price got too???

Robert L's picture
The NHLPA bonus clauses are only applicable to entry level contracts and contracts to players 35 years of age and older.

Price with bonuses, will make $2.2m for the next couple of years. $850k base salary

Robert L's picture
As a first round pick on an entry level contract, he is eligible for all kinds of performance bonuses. But, only if he quits smoking!

Robert L's picture
Lalime is gone to Buffalo for 2 years.

Good move by the Sabres , now there's not much left.

Robert L's picture
Oh my God, the dude on CKAC just asked Huet (live) if his contract numbers were logical!

Y's picture
and what was the response?

Robert L's picture
Almost dead silence....like next question! Kind of an "Ahhh Oui" moment of perplexicity!

Connecticut Man1's picture
ROTFLMAO!

Y's picture
I would've thought so!

Gary320's picture
Edmonton very interested in Hossa. Ready to give him a great deal according to RIS.

Robert L's picture
Any goalies left?

Y's picture
Don't forget Emery is still available

Robert L's picture
He'll go to the Panthers with Martin and work on his tan.

Y's picture
He doesn't need a tan ;)

Robert L's picture
Ah, he'll fit right in!

The Teacher's picture
Crappy ones Lalime Hedberg Holmqvist Aebischer... Denis and the like

coutNY's picture
add Good old Thibault & JS Aubin

Robert L's picture
Cross off Lalime.

coutNY's picture
Halak

Connecticut Man1's picture
We are keeping Halak, no doubt.

vaya_'s picture
possibly patrick lalime.

Robert L's picture
Slim pickings.

coutNY's picture
ALex Auld To the Senators

Connecticut Man1's picture
TSN: "Ottawa signs UFA goaltender Alex Auld to a 2 year deal worth $1-million" sportsnet: "Avg. yearly value: $1 million Length of contract: 2 years" Methinks that the TSN numbers must be wrong.

Robert L's picture
Great, the Habs ate him up last year!

coutNY's picture
I'm Still lost in confussion on what Chi-town is doing with HUET and Khabibulin. The salary alone is enough to make a GM puke.

Robert L's picture
They'll have to buy out the Bullin Wall. I thought he'd be headed back to Tampa, but I guess that it's Kolzig who'll be working on his tan there.

Y's picture
That's going to one hell of a buy out.

coutNY's picture
They're looking at a 4 1/2 million.... so basically they would have to get a back up in a slim market that would still cost them around 5 1/2 buyout included, If they can't trade him, they might have to keep him he's still better than any free agent out their they could get for 2 mill they'd be saving.

Chorske's picture
That's Auld news hee heee

gmd's picture
Ottawa for Alex Auld.

What are the BIG boys waiting for? Sundin, Hossa, Rolston, Campbell?

vaya_'s picture
money money money... i figure the more UFAs get snatched up, the more value the big names get. if sundin gets signed, rolston's value goes up, and vice-versa.

On the New York Times site "SLAP SHOT" look what i found at 4:16 .... http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/01/free-agent-action-live-blog... that guy Boone gets around.

Connecticut Man1's picture
Funny comment over there: "NY Rangers sign UFA forward Aaron Voros (undisclosed) Let me be the first Rangers fan to welcome…um…who?" — Posted by saget lol

Robert L's picture
Good one!

Robert L's picture
CKAC, Demers says Mario is in Jagr's ear right now.

so no Malkin or Hossa? where's the cap room?

coutNY's picture
Didn't you notice they all left for Tampa...

Y's picture
Quick Bob! Get some Q-tips!

Robert L's picture
Yup, open up rooms for Mats in NYC. I no like!

Gary320's picture
Kolzig officially to Tampa.

Chorske's picture
We're signing Halak. After Huet, Theo and Kolzig, the market for goalies (esp one with so little experience at the NHL level) is going to cool off. The teams that needed goalies got them (although I dont necessarily approve of their choices).

Robert L's picture
Emery and Ivory is still out there!

Chorske's picture
Exactly. The market is officially stone cold for goalies, and Bob is going to end up sweet as roses yet again, signing this kid (who everyone around here knows is NHL caliber) as a BACKUP to a bargain contract. Just another bold prediction based on sheer guesswork.

I hope we sign Halak and he's cool with being a no.2 for the contract.

The Teacher's picture
Yup Tampa Bay signs UFA goaltender Oleg Kolzig to a 1 year deal worth $1.5-million (plus bonuses). News flash TSN- his name is OLAF.
