Vinny staying put?

RDS reports that Vincent Lecavalier is on the verge of signing a long-term contract that will keep him in Tampa Bay.

Lecavalier, 28, is entering the final season of a three-year deal that pays him $7.167 million per. He is eligible to become a UFA on July 1, 2009.

Notwithstanding thehopes and dreams of Canadiens fans who envisioned an ÃŽle Bizard native coming home next summer, Lecavalier is in a great situation in Tampa (the more so now that John Tortorella is history), and he is heavily involved in the community, having made huge donations to local charities.

Los Angeles Kings are said to be shopping the number two pick in the draft. Rumours had them offering a package of the pick plus Mike Cammalleri to Tampa Bay for the Steven Stamkos pick.

There's also speculation – denied by Ottawa gm Bryan Murray – that the Kings tried to trade the pick to Ottawa for Jason Spezza.

Vinny needs to come here. He can make so much more endorsement money in Montreal and will get so much more exposure. And 'cause I want to see him on the Habs so badly.

While I agree that T Bay likely needed a coaching change, is Barry Melrose the answer? Last time he coached, the Habs were only a year or two removed from our last cup victory. All well and good to make a so-called 'marquee signing,' but it remains to be seen what impact Melrose's long layoff (over 4000 days!) will have on his coaching savvy. Certainly he never got much work at ESPN (Ever-Stalling Progress in the Nhl), and most would assume there'd have to be some disconnect there. The game has changed immensely since Melrose last coached, and I thought he was more hype than aught else even then. I'm surprised about the Streit (lack of) deal: didn't Gainey say resigning Mark was one of his top priorities heading to July 1? We DO have a stockpile of near NHL ready d-men in Hamilton, but how many of them are going to net us 60+ points or stabilize our PP? Also, looks as if AK46 is heading for $5 mil per or thereabouts after Carter's similar #s netted him 15 over three years. I'm gonna watch tonight's draft--anyone else? Habs rule, Leafs drool...

leafs trade for jamal mayers...they've begun the rebuilding process now that they've replaced sundin with a much better (canadian) player.

This is a good move by the laffs , a rock solid 3rd line RW that many teams would have pursued for the 70th pick overall.

It's the dumbest move I've ever seen for a team that is supposedly rebuilding..sheesh. Not that I'm complaining actually I hope they trade their second pick for Andrew Peters. LMAO you ok nightmare?

Not sure how solid a guy that posted a -79 (+/-) in his last 4 NHL seasons is going to improve the laffs. He'll be a 4th line - Part time enforcer at best. THis was an attempt at replacing the loss of Wade Belak and a poor attempt in my opinion. Add this to the list of dumb moves by the worst organizations. Trading away the future for yester-year has beens and in this case never were players. Keep up the time honored tradition Fletcher!

I'm hoping the HIO - 2008 Entry Draft Thread , now on page #5 , will be moved to the top of page #1 to have all the info on one thread for tomorrow night's draft or is it wishful thinking.

Do life long deals really exist? Can't the player waive a no trade clause if he no longer wanted to play there? Seems to me it's more like he's guaranteed to make x amount of $$ for the rest of his career, yes? I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!!

The Kings are also rumoured to be offering their second overall pick along with Cammalleri to Pittsburgh for Malkin. I can't see the Tampa deal making sense for the Lightning, but the deal with Pittsburgh does make a bit more sense. One thing seems certain, LA Kings are in the hunt for a "marquee" player. They are looking for a big name with big talent (preferably a young player) to fill some seats.

Right move or wrong move, you have to think Stamkos will play in the NHL next year. Who better to guide him and bring him along than Lecavalier, and with Tortorella gone you have to also think there are more than a few players breathing a sigh of relief. If ever there was a team screaming for a change of scenery coach-wise, it was Tampa Bay. Let the Vinny to Montreal scuttlebutt finally end. We will need to cultivate our own franchise player. Just don't know how we can do that. It's a catch 22. If you have winning seasons you draft late. Players the calibre of a Lecavalier don't normally come from the later picks, or the later rounds. In the old days, Pollock could make a few trades and effectively send a team to the bottom of the heap, while gaining said team's draft pick. The draft lottery has killed that possibility, even if there were teams still stupid enough to make such a deal. (hmmm, see: Toronto Maple Leafs)

Personally, I'm not much of a hoper and dreamer ... except the Penelope Cruz thing.

Mike - Funny you would mention that. In a perfect world, the Habs would draft her with their last pick and send you to do the introductory interview and welcome. Make sure you bring your 'Sher-wood One-Piece Hockey Stick' with you:-) The Original 24 Cups

Let's be honest here Mike, was Vinny every really coming to Montreal? Once he signs with Tampa, we can all move on and start looking at the future from a realistic viewpoint. The Original 24 Cups
