Today's rumour

posted by Mike Boone at 7h18 EST on Jun 13

Actually, yesterday's.

RDS reported that Saku Koivu was trying to persuade Teemu Selanne to join the Canadiens.

I'll believe it when I see the Finnish Flash at training camp – which, for Selanne, begins in February.

Remember how Andrei Markov's friendship with Alexander Ovechkin was going to influence the superstar's decision on whether or not to stay in Washington? The more feverish (and delusional) among us were working out scenarios on how the Canadiens would surrender a pile of draft picks and Alexander the Great would come play in a city where his taolents would be most appreciated.

Well, friends is friends .... and $$$ is $$$.

How many salary-cap dollars would Selanne want to come play out the string in Montreal?

The NHL Awards weren't a total shuout for the Canadiens.

Alex Kovalev was named to the second All-Star team and Carey Price made the All-Rookie team.

Well deserved in both cases.

we go down this same road every year(especially since Gainey became our GM), and the same thing happens every year. We, as fans get excited at all the UFA's available, and target a few that we want to play in Montreal. And then the same disappointment every year, when we find out that Gainey has signed nobody significant, AS USUAL! So people, there's no point in getting excited, because with Gainey as our GM, nothing will happen, and we'll have the same team AGAIN, with no improvement in goal scoring, and NO IMPACT PLAYER! Ho hum, MR. Conservative,(BG) is about to rear his ugly head AGAIN!

If this really happens, this would be the best addition to our team based on what it cost (money and cap, which we have plenty of next season) and need on this team. The first line is set. Although SK could become very quickly my favorite player on this team, I think it is asking a lot from him to be a game breaker on the 2nd line. I would prefer to see him in the 3rd line, maybe even as a center, with his speed and game instinct, he could become a very good 2-way player and one that could replace Saku in a couple of years. Therefore, to me, the biggest need offensively is a RW. Selanne can pass, can score, etc. He would be perfect. If you want to add grit, add it on the 3rd and 4th line, I would much prefer a Selanne on the 2nd line (or Hossa but this would give us cap issues in the future) than a Malone. Higgins is there to provide the grit on the line. As much as I like Sundin, he would be a good addition, but not the perfect as we already have 2 proven centers, but not many wingers... The other need for next year will be to replace Streit on the PP. Hopefully there is a solution inside the organisation. I don't know if SK can take the shot from the point... Worse case, maybe Kovy? If no one can do the job, then we need a Top4 defenseman who can play the point on the PP. Any intelligent Free Agent D, with a decent shot, should know by now that if Streit and Souray put up those numbers, the Markov factor could improve their numbers as well. So, I think the Canadiens would be a a place of dream for any D with a decent shot. Finally, if you want grit, I would take Tucker at 3M (or less if they buy him out and we can re-sign him). As much as I hate him right now, I would love him on our 3rd line! Imagine if we could trade Dandy for Tucker? Thats how we got rid of Samsonov (a buyout for a buyout) so this type of trade from Gainey could happen. One more: Lecavalier in 2009. That is the real perfect fit.

I guess some people can NEVER be satisfied, first over all in scoring and you want to improve...LOLOLOL..I don't know about guys like you !!

if you think a 37 year old is an "impact" player, then must be smoking some good stuff. Granted, I would welcome teemu on my team for a year or two, I wouldn't curse gainey if he didn't sign him. What we dont know is gainey isn't a dumbass. He knows a thing or two more about the game than us.

Jeez...first in the league in goals scored. What kind of improvement are you jonesing for? http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

Just in from RDS; Yann Danis is going to test the Free Agent route. Better sign Halak quick.

Sounds like another round of using Montreal as a platform to up the ante and cash in one last big paycheck before packing it in. If Koivu has convinced Selanne to come to Montreal we now have to wonder if he has also convinced Gainey to make him an offer. Is it another case of "Koivu wants-Koivu gets" ? Habs could use some help at RWing but the first priority is at Centre, period. Make him a decent offer (around 4 mil for 1 year) but if they drop a hint for more, move on.

I really don't see why Teemu wouldn't come to Montreal. He has already won a cup in Anahiem. They traded away the center which he had the most success with. And there likely isn't a lot of money floating around in Anahiem. He would instantly become a favorite in Montreal with an up and coming skilled team. I think it would be a great fit that could put us over the top.

It's not really that far fetched if he's willing to make the move... Last year they had a hard time getting to play in the city he resided in. If he still wants to play, than its more a matter of getting him to move to Montreal with his family or to temporarily be apart from his family for the season. At his age, in a time when he has nothing left to prove and could still go out on top, sort of, Does he want to devote his time into a young team? Thats the question... because he has no real option to go back with the Ducks unless he willing to cut his pay to about a 1/3 of his worth.

Selanne is basically the same proposition as Sundin - he won't cost any players and we can overpay for the year seeing we have tons of cap room in 2008-09. We also benefit in that Selanne would have no financial impact on future years when we will possibly have cap problems. Therefore, he is a much safer option than Hossa. I realize he doesn't have the same talent base as Hossa but hey, we don't have any other forwards in the system right now so why not sign Selanne for a year. Who's to say Hossa will come our way? We need to be prepared. Perfect stop gap solution for a Plan B if other free agents pass us by. We need to take the same approach for a 4th defenseman. The Original 24 Cups

I think Teemu Selanne would be an incredible acquistion. This is a guy who can still score, is a winner and is one of the most likeable hockey personalities around. Teemu is all class (as are Sundin, Jokinen, malone and Hossa). It seems any of the big names being tossed around are character guys and that is perhaps the most encouraging thing about this offseason. If we do manage to land one of the free agents then I think there is a very real possibility we make two acquisitions of significance. There has to be at least one. If we land one of the big fish and Ryan Malone.......look out because we would instantly be scary (even to the West). we have enough in the system to afford a trade as well but I think Gainey has been building to this next three year window and all of these aging stars we are courting wil still be effective for that period. These are exciting times because we know without a doubt that Gainey is interested in making a big move. I am not sure about all of the defenseman talk though. I think if we land a dman it would have to be a one or two year thing and I can't see any dmen of any real value who would want to get into that situation. Oh well ......it's going to be a fun offseason however it plays out.

Looks like you figured out your main page posting delemma's???

It still won't go directly there but once I get that message I posted before I found that I can click on the heading that says "Name" and it gets me here. It is still very annoying but I can at least be here. If you know the fix please help me bwecause when I click on the "Main" link I get bumped to that other screen. This is the message. 24 - It's something to look into for sure as he may be the sniper we need and would fit in nice for a short term - LW)Sergie C)Saku RW)Selanne / LW) AK46 C)Sundin RW)Kovy / LW)Higgy C)Pleks RW)Stewart or D'Agostini / and the energy line.

NM49 - If Sundin comes to Montreal, then Koivu has to move to the wing. Pleks isn't going to play as our #3 centre. The Original 24 Cups

24 - I put that out there and i was sure you would reply about Pleks. I also thought you would comment on no Lats (your boy) and you would scream about the salary cap but i think the U.S.Open has mellowed you. If Carter can play 3rd line center I'm sure Pleks can and anyway seniority rules, lol. Great conversation and I'll catch you soon , FORE.

Not sold on O'byrne?

24 Cups's picture
Mike - no problem with O'Byrne. Assuming Brisebois doesn't come back, we will need a puck moving defenseman who also has some experience/size and is willing to sign on for a year (or two). Somebody that is middle of the road in terms of talent and salary. We would then round out the defense with Gorges, Cube, and O'Byrne. That's also assuming that Carbo doesn't see Streit as a defenseman next year (if he comes back). If Streit doesn't sign, I won't be surprised to see Brisebois come back for another year. I'm not saying that's what I want, I'm just saying I could see it happening. The Original 24 Cups

Habful - I've always liked Chris Kelley and he's versatile but back to your post.... Streit a UFA so that's a problem and he could be too expensive for Martin's budget though Martin is looking for an offensive "D" and he may bid on Streit on July 1st and Florida has no 1st round pick and is looking for a high one. While your trade may be tempting a bit for Martin he knows that in his market he has to make a big splash especially after the Luongo trade and remember Jokinen is a fan favourite. IMO he could get more.

Streit, Latendresse (Or Chipchura), O'byrne, 2 nd round choice received from Washington for Jokinen...I say or Chipchura only because i think they'd want a center in return...As much as I like chipchura, replace him with Chris Kelley as a checking center...Let me know what you think... "If I wanted to hear from an ***, I would fart..."

J.T.'s picture
I think you're delusional. No offence, but why on earth do you think Florida would trade a productive bulldog like Jokinen for an UFA utility man, an unproven D, an underachieving and/or unproven forward and a draft pick? No, you can be guaranteed if the Panthers move Jokinen, they'll be getting something back that will immediately help their team. Chips or Lats and O'Byrne don't cut it, and there's no sense even talking about Streit unless Gainey signs him before July 1. Very rarely will you find a group of unproven players or scrubs add up to the value of a proven star. And it's not like Florida is so desperate to dump Olli that they'll drop him for the first set of warm bodies they're offered. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

Habhopeful's picture
I am Delusional...:) haha There's been worse trades in history...Thats why i wish Milbury was Florida's G.M or if Mike Keenan was still there as Florida's G.M...But I think as hesitant as i would be to do it, I would trade Kovalev for Jokinen now that Kovy's value is as high as it is, I still have worries he could pull another 2006-2007 season, plus it's his last contract year and hes gettng up there in age...I love the guy, dont get me wrong but for the sake of the team I think it favours us more...
