Max signs for two years

posted by Mike Boone at 19h16 EST on Jun 9

As reported by CKAC on the weekend, the Canadiens have signed Maxim Lapierre to a new two-year contract.

Lapierre will make
$575,000 this season and $800,000 in 2009-'10.

These are modest, cap-friendly numbers for the Canadiens.

Lapierre has just completed a three-year deal that paid $625,000 in his first pro season, followed by $562,000 each of the last two seasons.

Lots of money left over in the kitty for AK46 and Josh Gorges.

Here's the cluib's press release:

MONTREAL (June 9, 2008) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing
of forward Maxim Lapierre to a two-year contract (2008-09 and 2009-10). As per club policy, financial terms
of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Maxim is part of our core of young players who contribute to the success of our team. The
determination, grit and energy he brings to the ice are important assets that we are looking for in our young
players,” said Bob Gainey.
Lapierre, 23, will begin his fourth season with the Canadiens this fall. In 2007-08, he set career highs in
games played (53), goals, assists and points (7-11-18). He also served 60 penalty minutes.
A native of St-Leonard, Lapierre played his 100th NHL game on the last regular-season matchup last April
5, 2008. Thus far in his NHL career, he registered 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists), and added 84 penalty
minutes.
Lapierre was selected 61st overall in the second round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens.

Quick question. Is his contract 2-way?

yay! :) :) :) :)

A quick question for Mike: whenever a player is signed, I always wonder where the press gets his salary info so quickly, even though "financial details are not disclosed." Do reporters just come out and ask the guy or what? 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

A fair contract I think.

The first of many to come in the next few weeks, if this price tag is any indication Bob will do well.

Max is 3rd liner potential. He'll not score 50 or add 100 assists. He's a lunch bucket type player with good speed, learning to play sound D. A short 2 year deal keeps him motivated. His next contract will be closer to a million per. A solid signing for BG, leaving room for the money makers, i.e., the scorers. Gilbert

nice contract for Max and Gainey. Quick question to headmaster Boone, what do you see as a salary figure for Gorges?

Excellent move by BG! One thing I know for sure this guy will come into camp a lot better prepared than last year. Now if he could only finish around the net!! Hopefully next year #84 will come into camp a little hungrier and a tad bit faster than this year. If he does, 25 goals is not out of sight. With his size Carbo should stand him 5 feet in front of the goalie and tell him not to move. The PP was good during the finesse days " regular season" but during the playoffs when the rough got going they lacked the grit. Hopefully Gui can bring a new dimension to their PP.

Great deal, kudos BG!

A good deal at the right price. GO HABS.

Nice to hear. I just hope they didn't pay him more than what he was making last couple of years. In my mind he hasn't really improved all that much, so as a decent 4th liner he would right at about $600K/year.

Good job, but I hate it when we give important players 2 year deals. Just last year, we signed Higgs and Komi to 2 year deals and befor we can even take a couple of years to breathe, people are already talking about locking them both up long term. I don't mind giving a guy like TK a 2 year deal because you never know what you may get. But when we all know that these players are our foundation for years to come, I think 3 years is a minimum. AK46 should be in for ATLEAST 3 years. Same for Mark Streit.. It'll be interesting to see what unfolds in the coming weeks!

I have wondered about the 2 year deal myself - and maybe it is Bob's plan to keep things on an even keel - if the player keeps performing he gets a nice raise every 2 years. Not that I have crunched the numbers over the long term... but at least it means you are never locked into a player who goes bust... Long term deals look good sometimes - if you think it is a sure thing - kind of like bank's want to get you into a long term mortgage - even though a series of cheaper short term one's are way better for you in the long run. Maybe in hockey there is a "bang for buck" rating that could be applied to see if long vs short term has any advantage... any accountants out there like to comment?

I think the two-year deal is very simple. The players who get four years from Gainey are those who have proven themselves over years at a high level, like Koivu, Kovalev, Markov and Hamrlik. The ones we're talking about are very young, most 25 years old or less. It's not unreasonable to assume those players have not had time to develop a trend in regards to their performance. I think Gainey wanted to wait and see if Higgins would continue to be inconsistent, yet still put up decent numbers, and if Komisarek's body would hold up under his rugged style of play, and if Plekanec would continue to improve before he offered them long-term deals. A cautious GM would hesitate to throw out big years and money at guys who still have a lot to prove. A gambler might say, yeah, I think Higgins will score forty and then he'll be a bargain...signing him for seven years with that ideal in mind. But if Higgins tops out at 27-28 goals a year, that deal doesn't look so good. I think Gainey's not very much of a gambler. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

You never know, for the money that was being tossed about, his agent may have advised him to sign a two year deal. Personally, I'm quite happy with this situation. Lapierre has been OK so far, let's see what happens down the road. Play on the 3rd or 4th lines, have a dual role as centre/winger, kill penalities, and get your nose dirty. That's about what I expect from a guy like him. The Original 24 Cups

Maxim adds good energy to our line up where ever he plays and i hope he can improve on his discipline on the wing cuz his versatility is an asset and we're all hoping for additions to our center spot.

That's Max back in the fold, now get Gorges, Halak, and AK46 locked up before Kevin Lowe catches wind of our guys! ----- Go Habs Go!

RGM - two names make my blood boil on this site - Lowe and Samsonov. You've been warned!!! Seriously, I think it would be very beneficial to have Halak back next year. Competition is healthy and a 54-28 split with Price would work out just fine. If Price isn't ready, then we have a fall back position already in place. The Original 24 Cups
