New slogan for Flyers: Vengeance Later

posted by Dave Stubbs at 8h32 EST on May 13

Remember the "Vengeance Now" slogan the Philadelphia Flyers used during the first two rounds of the playoffs, including their five-game, second-round victory over the Canadiens? Well, that's not going to help them tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Final 2-0 with Game 3 tonight in Philly.

What is it with this vengeance slogan anyway. What's the story behind this. someone?

I would like Gainey to pattern this team the same way he did with the Dallas Stars. Not to be a racist but his Stars weren't filled with this many europeans. When he made the key move to get Nieuwendyk, he did so cause a GM must tweak a thing or two if he thinks he has a bonafide chance for the cup, but I wonder how come he didnt do anything this year if he thought this team could go all the way. I personnally dont think he believed we could go all the way, but then again this is Montreal its not like he could say otherwise with the media hounds we have.

TommyB's picture
Two things that are different: 1) This is now the era of the salary cap...something that did not exitst in Bob's Dallas days. 2) This is Montreal...a completely different mindset, history of winning, traditions upon traditions, eyes and ears of the press are everywhere, the importance of maintaining a certain level of francophone players on the team, and a team that Gainey captained and played for throughout some of it's glory days. I don't think you can draw comparisons when these two teams are as different as night and day historically, and philosophically.

Watching the Pitt-Philly series gives me chest pains. My God, there is no way on Earth we shouldn't have annihilated the stinky Flyers.

I think Gainey has been watching the movie, "To Russia with love". I mean I like russian players, especially Ovechkin, but some good old canucks would be great.

The Russians called him the best hockey player in the world in the 70's. His love of Russians "gratefulness" that last forever!!

Submitted by HABSFANATIC on Tue, 05/13/2008 - 17:08. Honestly watching the flyers in this series I find it unconsiounable how they could beat us as a matter of fact if we were to play the series again right now I think we would sweep them. impossible you're an idiot!

ZepFan2's picture
"you're an idiot!" Speaking from experience are we?!

I guess everyone else can voice their opinion, but me? Just because you don't agree, no need to get in a tizzy. everyone is entitled to express their beliefs. normally repetition gets results, and constructive criticism is good, so lay off!

Detroit is in a league by themselves, and nobody, but nobody is going to beat them! It's theit year, and they're IN THE ZONE! And for Gainey to say that he wants the habs to emulate the wings, all I have to say is:" Gainey dream on! The wings are light years ahead of the habs. Guys, it wasn't just pure luck that the flyers beat us. He had simply horrible goaltending. If we would have had half decent goaltending, we would still be playing. And god forbid if we go into next year's playoffs with AGAIN, a 20 and 22 year old goalie. Bob, WE NEED AN EXPERIENCED BACKUP GOALIE, just in case Price screws up again. Get it? And do we honestly think Carbo knows how to play a SYSTEM? The only thing Carbo knows is musical lines, no timeouts, playing the wrong players, and benching young players that deserve to play! When Carbo leaves, the habs will compete!

If you are so smart, you should know that next year the goalies will be a year older than they are now...

Who would you like Gainey to try and pattern his team after? Toronto perhaps? GO HABS.

Do you not find it pointless to rant about the same drab thing over and over everyday? I think you're obsessing a little too much about the Habs, and Gainey in particular. Remember that, at the end of the day, IT'S JUST A GAME!! Go be with family. Go be with friends and enjoy Montreal's superb night life. This seasons chapter of the Canadiens is done. No amount of critiquing, criticizing or ranting is going to get this season back. Have a good day!

Mitch.sc's picture
buddy lay it to rest, you didn't get it out of your system this season? also, pens just scored, again, sweet.

useless ranting. everybody please ignore.

I guess the site was down today for maintenance. Has anyone in IT had the chance to check out the "edit profile" problem? Still can't edit, delete or change anything on my profile. Keep getting Internet Explorer error. Hitting the refresh key doesn't work. If you guys could look into it, pretty please.

Keith's picture
Well there's your problem, Internet Explorer. It's the Maple laff's of internet browsers LOL. Switch to firefox and you will have no problems.

Moey's picture
I never had this problem before. Go figure.

Ian Cobb's picture
Hey Moey, don't change your profile again, I'll never know who I'm riding. Anything I can do to help??

Moey's picture
Sorry Ian, it's going to be a new season so I need a new horse. All the pics I used are the same horse. Go easy on that riding crop, remember what happened to Eight Belles!!!

The Cat's picture
Pens or flyers don't stand a chance against the red wings.

Crosby, Malkin, Hossa vs. Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen. Should be interesting, unlike the east, the west has only Detroit with the skill level of the Pens. The key lies in the defense and goaltending. What a show by Pitsburgh last night...almost flawless...Pens in 7.

WindsorHab-10's picture
Wings are playing great but I expect Osgood to start stinking very soon.

Sammy's picture
No doubt about that.

TripleX's picture
Some of the people on this forum have to face reality. It is not that the Flyers have suddenly gone bad, but rather how much better than the Habs, the Pens are. The Pens have more talent up front and on the blueline and are much better coached. They play with a definite system and very rarely look confused or flustered. Compare this with the Habs in the playoffs, who far to often looked lost on the ice. One has to assume that next season making the playoffs will be far more difficult. Let's hope that Bob can make the necessary changes to make us a stronger team, standing pat is not an option.

WindsorHab-10's picture
It's all about experience. The Pens didn't fare too well last year in the playoffs as they were ousted by the Sens in the first round. Our team will learn from this, bounce back and with the right moves, the sky is the limit. Leafs still suck!!!!!!

The playoffs were a new experience to alot of the team this year. That being said, the team barely squeaked by Boston, who was missing their starter and best player. With Bergeron and Fernandez in the line up, Boston would have gave us even more fits. Philly was also ravaged by injuries, while our team was relatively healthy. Anyone who can't see the Philly series as a one sided blowout needs to take the blinders off. 4-1 series, and it could have been 4-0. Kovalev gets shut down, the Habs get shut down. As a fan, I feel the team overachieved this year. Hopefully help is on the way or it could be a very long season (or short sans playoffs) next year.

Honestly watching the flyers in this series I find it unconsiounable how they could beat us as a matter of fact if we were to play the series again right now I think we would sweep them. impossible

Chuck's picture
I get that feeling, too. That said, in that particlar series, the Habs couldn't get the puck into the net. The Flyers could. Now they're getting their just desserts, and it looks good on them! . . . . __________________________________ My own little Habs blog --> Centre Hice

Well folks it been 2 weeks since the Habs got ousted by the Flyers, despite the missed goals and goal post, the fact remains that the habs as they are now are too soft to go deep into the playoffs. How many times did the defence turn over the puck rather than take a hit or dish one out, and much the same on offence, the forwards got pushed around and continually got out-muscled by the flyers. They surely needed more offence, and putting players who scored 6-10 goals for the season into the line-up, wasnt going to suddenely light it up. Just look at the Wings and see how they control the puck in all zones and outmuscle their opponents. The Habs have the team to hold their own in the regular season but its a different ball game come playoff time.

filincal's picture
There were some games during the season that Montreal looked unbeatable. I think it was Commodore when he was still with Carolina said Montreal played like the Habs of the 70's. When Pleks line passed the puck in the offensive zone with such ease and making the big slow defense trip over their own skates, well that reminded me of the great teams of old. I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!!

Habs fan in SF's picture
lots of young players on this team. did you really expect them to go really far, really?! i mean, sure it was awesome, but lets be honest, this team is young and it will only get better and this playoff experience was great for our young guys. you think you're pissed off? what about the sharks consitently dominating the regular season and then getting eliminated in the 2nd round. we have a bright future, my friend.

ReverendJim's picture
Where is Umberger now??

ReverendJim's picture
Funny...he scored a goal yesterday...he sure showed me! Nonetheless, he was "a tad bit" lucky against the Habs BUT, he was at the right place at the right time!

HugeHabsFan's picture
I was wondering the same thing, lol. I like to call him Dumberger. My kids...? Bumberger. :o)) ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Chuck's picture
I guess that 40% shooting percentage against the Habs may have been--dare I say it--just a tad bit lucky? . . . . __________________________________ My own little Habs blog --> Centre Hice

lmao! :D Gilbert

Nice one JT !!! You know .. yea, the Habs went down to Philly , even tho we expected to beat 'em ... I still think we had an outstanding year , much better than I EVER expected ... we definitely improved team play .. 5 on 5 ... PP still was outstanding ... the Boys got some experience in the playoffs .. and they learned what it takes to win in the Regular Season ... Realistically, no one expected them to win the cup ... so soft or not .. this team did what it had to do ... yea .. if we can add some pieces ... i keep hearing size up the middle ... and I hope we are referring to quality and size, and not just Turner Stevenson type hockey players ... that would be good .. i am curious how you all feel it would affect the lineup ... who would go ... who would play where ... Anyone take a look at UFAs this year ... nothing outstanding ...

J.T.'s picture
Sundin. He's the one I want. Big, mean, talented, tough. Imagine the Habs with Sundin, Koivu, Plekanec and Chipchura down the middle. That one addition would change the whole forward makeup of the team. Of course, it's a pipe dream. Toronto would overpay him to stay there rather than let him go to the Habs. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

ReverendJim's picture
Ok...that made me spit coffee from my nostrals!

J.T.'s picture
Sorry. That sounds uncomfortable, to say the least. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

If it is of any consolation, we are not alone in recognizing that we should have won the series. I live in NYC, and I play hockey with a lot of New Yorkers and people from all over the US and Canada. Knowing that I am from Montreal, they talk to me about the Habs, and have unanimously told me that if we had any goaltending whatsoever, we would have won the series. They also have mentioned to me about the ridiculous bounces and goalposts, etc from the series... In any case, it made me feel better that I didn't have on rose-colored glasses.

24 Cups's picture
Lafrich - Your glasses may be rose-coloured but they still need cleaning just like regular glasses. We lost 4 games to 1. Bad bounces, hit goal posts, and missed open nets are all part of the game. I know we had more than our share but when does bad luck turn from being untimely to becoming an excuse or a crutch? We fell behind in every game (except the last one) and were always playing catch-up. I agree that Price was terrible in the Philly series but let's be honest here - the Flyers deserved to win. You have to give them their due. Our young players can chalk it up as a learning experience and move on to next year. Let's stop looking back at what might have been and instead start thinking about how we can improve this team for 2008-09. The Original 24 Cups

First of all, your first sentence makes no sense whatsoever. Second of all, I was merely pointing out that I was relieved to hear that non-Habs fans saw what I saw, and that I wasn't being a homer. Point finale. Now you can get back on your "I am so realistic" soapbox, and preach to people who may want to hear it.

G-Man's picture
Nice one. :) Gilbert

24 Cups's picture
Lafrich - Fore! Easy does it, there was no harm intended. The Original 24 Cups

Seriously? Me easy does it? Look in the mirror pal. I was making a point to make people feel better about a weird series, and you pointed out some reality that belongs to you and some other posters. You had to be blind to not see that the Habs controlled the play throughout the series, only to be done in by very weak goaltending on our side, and some breaks and great goaltending on the other side.

J.T.'s picture
The worse they play, the harder it is to accept the Habs' losing to them. I just wish that series were over so I didn't have to see the Flyers anymore. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
