Update: Sanity rules over arena music flap

posted by Dave Stubbs at 8h43 EST on May 8

A prominent French publisher is insisting that the Canadiens play more francophone music during their Bell Centre games.

But the Quebec government said yesterday it's not going to force arena management, i.e., the Canadiens, to increase the French content of its music.

Read below for what appears in today's Gazette:

The Quebec government has no plans to pass a law forcing the Bell Centre to boost the number of French songs it plays during games despite a petition launched by a Montreal book publisher.

Culture and Communications Minister Christine St-Pierre said while she would like to hear more French tunes in public establishments, she's not ready to legislate such an idea. St-Pierre was reacting to a petition launched by Michel Brulé calling on officials to provide at least 65-per-cent French content in the music at the Bell Centre.

Brulé, who runs the publishing house Les Intouchables, said he got the idea of the petition while attending Game 7 of the Canadiens-Bruins series. He said he heard lots of U2 and Coldplay, but no Robert Charlebois or Offenbach.

I can't begin to tell you (yes, tell you) how ridiculous the concept, subject, .. whatever, is. From moot to sublime,... but mostly navel gazing tripe. Quebec? You're going NOWHERE,.. slowly (as usual).

I think theres an Irish saying: people in countries that arent powerful enough to wage war on another country, usually end up trying to wage war against each other...or something like that.

cautiousoptimist's picture

Funny that the Irish would come up with that.

1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Wayne's picture

Not really. 'Cause they probably coined the phrase "shit or get off the pot".

I was reading the comments and I was becoming a little apologetic for the guy, after all what is wrong with suggesting that we play more french songs in a french province with a team that is given its name in french. I would also observe that probably the majority of people that go to canadiens hockey game speak french as a first language. Nothing wrong with a suggestion right? Well...

Having said that, if you look at what Brule says, its completely bigoted and arbitrary. So incensed is he at the fact that the songs are english based that he fails to realize that U2, the band frequently heard at the bell center, was for the longest time a known supporter of northern Ireland independence... and that is as far down the philosophical road I will go. To even bring into this arena betrays Mr. Brule's need for exposure on this idea. I have erased about a half dozen paragraphs, because they just don't belong in hockey. Just like politics. Just like Mr. Brule.

Sorry if that came off with a little bit of edge, I spent way too much time on saying nothing... heh.

i grew up in Dorval. i went to john abbott for a semester and then carted off to college in the US and then landed a job in the US upon graduation. I left when i was 19 back in 1994. i LOVE montreal, but part of the reason i left was because of this language bs. it's pretty stupid when you think about it. language police? what kind of a place actually has language police?? sounds pretty communist to me. i'm and i was born and raised in quebec. i'm just as much quebecois as this whackjob. i honestly would not complain if i heard nothing but french songs at the bell center. in fact, i prefer the old "bleu, blanc, rouge" song they USED to play when the habs scored - rather than U2. get a life, dude.

Messier seems to be focusing on the Club De Canadien in this picture... pondering If he had gone with Habs during his career... He'd probably be a GM by now.

Chuck's picture

Nah, he's just angry that the Habs broke the Oilers' mid-eighties streak.

By the way, in that photo it looks like the 75-76 entry and the 77-78 entries are misspelled "CLUB DE HQCKEY CANADIEN".

Probably just a trick of the light, though.

I'm betting Dallas.

No matter what line he's on, there's a centre (Ribiero, Richards, Modano) with some offensive creativity.

Waddya know? I got one right.

And how can you lowball a guy when everyone can only offer him the same entry-level contract?

Many other benefits and ways.

coutNY's picture

Your right, We should of offered him a top line garentee, than when he's elgible give him a 5 year $20 million per year deal with a No trade clause before he ever plays a NHL game.

The Teacher's picture

Very good question ;)

Chuck's picture

I don't understand it... no one tops Montreal's strippers.

Or so I've heard.

I tried to 'top' them once and got arrested : /

Cable Guy's picture

I knew we wouldn't get that guy. We never do.

"Last week Brunnstrom made his way to Montreal where Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey courted the highly sought after free agent."

Gillette and Gainey low-ball just another one!

ZepFan2's picture

A Pens fan eh. Not surprising.

NEXT...SUIVANT!

Those Quebec dummies are just plain lucky that they got the Pens this far.

Mario Lemieux
Michel Therrien
Andre Savard
That bad goalie Fleury and others

Chuck's picture

Wait... weren't you just praising Mario Lemieux's work earlier on in this thread?

"In less than six months, Holmgren had added Coburn, Upshall, Parent, Biron, Hartnell, Timmonen, Briere,Modry, Smith (who immediately became team captain) and Lupul. And despite losing Gagne to injury have made it to the final 4 this year.

Compare the above to what Gainey(for Gillette) has done to bolster or unload from the Habs from the '07 trade deadline to now.

...OR what Mario Lemieux adding Gary Roberts last year and Marion Hossa, Pascuale Dupuis and Gill this trade deadline..."

Sounds like this penguin is chasing it's tail, if you ask me.

I think LBC oozes sarcasm with most of the stuff he says. Pens is his team so he's not badmouthing Mario and company... he is a smart ass dickhead trying to pull chains and piss off real hockey fans.

Big Bird's picture

I use to go for his bait but now I just leave it be Scotty90. But you don't need to stoop to his level with those choice words my friend.

Sometimes things can be unsaid and everyone knows what you mean.

ZepFan2's picture

"Both Fleury and Price were considered great goalie prospects. Both have te ability, now is their time."

That was posted AFTER the trade deadline by YOU .

F-ing Hypocrite!

The Teacher's picture

And for good reason too! you should read below, and I will say it once again, BYE BYE

Scotty90's picture

why do you care Pens fan?

The Teacher's picture

I think he is mad because the Penguins mortgaged their future by signing Hossa and we did not, thanks to a very smart GM who will NOT be fooled :)

coutNY's picture

What do you mean we got the Finnish version last year in Lahti.... Brunnstrom is no Franzen by the sounds of it... we'll survive without him.

coutNY's picture

Where did you guys get the confirmation?

This is all I could find on Brunnstrom: roughly translated

MONTREAL - The Swedish Fabian Brunnstrom has spent the last weekend in Montreal after visiting Dallas and Detroit. Canadian hopes to hire the young attacker to 23 years that we say enough talent.

According to some observers, Brunnstrom would be a good player of the third trio but not necessarily an impact player. The Habs would not be ready to engage in an bidding war with the Stars and Red Wings.

but the Wings and Dallas might not have the money either?

Yeah, I was trying to update but you beat me to it... "I got the access Denied" Oh well, we don't need any more 3rd liners unless their of the smash-mouth type anyway...
