Audio: Carbo's chosen his goalie for Game 5

Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau has decided on his starting goaltender – either Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak – for Saturday’s pivotal fifth game of the Eastern Conference semifinal against Philadelphia. He just doesn’t want to reveal his choice to the media.

“I haven’t had a chance to talk to Carey or Jaro. I want to make sure they’re the first to know,” Carbonneau said this afternoon during a conference call that lasted nearly 25 minutes.

The call was in lieu of practice, the coach thinking it more important his team enjoy a day away from the rink. They must win the next three games against the Flyers, over a four-day span, to advance. Only once in the franchise’s history – 2004 against Boston – has that occurred.

Carbonneau also denied speculation Price, who didn’t play Wednesday, is suffering from a hand injury. "Carey Price is not hurt – not his finger, hand, shoulder or knee,” the coach stressed. “He has no injuries.”

Here's the audio of the conference in its entirety.

I posted this yesterday...seems like it applies even more to today's posts. Forgive the repitition: I've just spent around an hour catching up on all the posts on the last 4 threads...and boy o' boy did it start to get to me, seems like we have 4 or 5 posters who do nothing but bait people with the same broken record of aspersions concerning many of our players, our coach, and even Bob Gainey fer cryin' out loud. And some posters unfortunately took the bait, while I don't condone some of what's been said, I can understand the passion. This site attracts predatory fools. One trick ponies with alot of time on their hands(prisons should really monitor internet use). That being said, you can always count on the old guard to come through in the end. Putting the "broken record" crowd in their place with logic and class might not accomplish anything, but the effort is noble. I watch the games, I yell and swear at the TV and the players therein, I bitch to my wife...I even have taken to calling a certain player "hands of stone"(I'm sure a few of you will catch that reference). But one thing I don't do is badmouth the boys or coaching staff in public. Call me a glass is half full guy if you want, but I don't want to waste anyone's time on this site by having them read repetitve drivel, or destructive critism. Constructive, erudite, well thought out observations...absolutely! There appears to me to be several different types of posters on this site, and I'm firmly in the "thinks before he posts" class. I'd suggest that people take the time to really think before they type, especially when the other guy/gal is trying to get some attention, that way maybe if they don't get a reaction they might just go back to pulling the wings off flies. And by the way..Carbo gets my vote for the Jack Adams, look for my post under that thread if your interested(I figured there's no point to posting it here as well). Go Habs GoGo Habs Go

And playing goal for the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night... Les Kuntar, Randy Exelby, Doug Soetaert, Jocelyn Thibault, Vince Riendeau, Stephane Fiset, Andy Moog, Jeff Hackett, Patrick Roy, Andre Racicot, Pat Jablonski, Brian Hayward, Steve Penney, Richard Sevigny, Denis Herron, Rick Wamsley, Ken Dryden, Wayne Thomas, Michel Plasse, Michel Larocque, Denis DeJordy, Phil Myre, Charlie Hodge, Rogie Vachon, Gump Worsley, Jacques Plante... Carey Price. Ugh.

ya know what the most amazing thing is... on all of those former Habs goalies? they were all TRADED AWAY inexplicably at some point!!! Except Price But I'll betcha at this time next year he'll have already been dealt as well !!! i don't know if there is a product on earth that has a shorter shelf life than a Habs Goalie !!! probably Not !!! It's not a knock on price, I think he's great, it's just we had a winning goalie 5 goalies ago, they've all been traded away for whatever stupid reason. I still don't undestand why Vokun was traded, let alone the rest of them including Theodore and Huet. Trading Hainsworth to Toronto in my mind is still inexplicable and that happned in the 30's the year right after THE ONE IN WHICH he DID NOT ALLOW A SINGLE GOAL TO BE SCORED IN EACH AND EVERY HABS HOME GAME THAT YEAR AT THE FORUM, A RECORD WHICH STILL STANDS TODAY{SO WHAT DID WE DO?...WE TRADED HIM AWAY} !!!! hey beofre i forget please add GILLES LUPIEN {ALTHOUGH NOT A GOALIE}to that list WHO WAS IN FACT TRADED FOR SOME GOALIE EQUIPMENT AND A BAG OF PUCKS !!! HE WAS A DEFENSMEN WHO, IF YA CAN BELIEVE IT, WAS FAR WORSE THAN BRISEBOIS !!!

The only advice I can give the Montreal Canadiens for their game tomorrow, is stop with the blind passes. Kovalev is king for that... Just passes it without looking... Can't do that in playoffs... And no I am not ripping Kovy. I am just saying he should try to keep it a few seconds more... Players win games, teams win championships. - Bill Taylor

I don't know a lot about Malone other than he's big and seems to put some points on the board. Sure hope the team can up with somebody with some size and grit. Remember...they made an attempt to get Jason Arnott, a big forward, but that fell through....... If they have to get smaller guys I hope they can find some with Saku's heart..................

I don't believe Montreal's problems stem from the lack of work ethic. 80% of the goals for the Habs in this series have been scored as a result of their own creatation, through key faceoff wins or on giving aways and take Aways: . Game 1 Scored BY-9:44...GOAL..MTL #46 KOSTITSYN(4), Snap, Off. Zone, 28 ft. Created BY-9:41..GIVE...PHI GIVEAWAY - #17 CARTER, Neu. Zone Scored BY-16:03..GOAL...MTL #27 KOVALEV(3), Tip-In, Off. Zone - MTL #14 PLEKANEC vs PHI #48 BRIERE Scored BY-13:36..GOAL...MTL #11 KOIVU(3), Wrist, Off. Zone, 10 ft. Created BY13:21..GIVE...PHI GIVEAWAY - #48 BRIERE, Off. Zone ONLY two other types of goals were scored occurred for Montreal, my conclusion is we need increase the PUCK control Quality. Better stick handling, Passing, and patients with the puck while tightening up the Nuetral zone defense. WE are a -60 in the GIVE/TAKE area. So... 80% of Montreal goals were scored by GV,TK or FACE wins while the opposition has 50% of their scoring resulting from these type of plays. This also suggests the obvious that were not getting as many garbage goals as our oppoinents because of good goaltending. PENALTY KILL Knowing that the Flyers had been the second best Power Play team in the league, and has been still working in the playoffs unlike the Habs, we need to get better on the Ice Against in the PK area. Philly has scored four PP goals while our 2nd (Defensive) Power Play unite Hamrlik and Gorges have been on the ICE 3 of the 4 goals. The other goal was on Markov and Komi. The end of the regular season we saw inprovement in the PK Area and the Defensemen I remember stepping up were O'Bryne and Boullion... Maybe its time to unite them in short-handed situations. For Forward 50% of the goals were scored on Lapierre/Bégin and SMOLINSKI/KOSTOPOULOS. Maybe Higgins since hes struggling Offensively should be given more of a role in this department? Plekanec also with his deminished PP role as a partner? Both these players are defensively sound and Leaders with a Positive GV/TK turnover ratio department. Others like Kovy and Koivu would be hard to justify increasing their roles while already earning increase Even strengh and PP minutes. Simple hockey is the key to scoring on Brion. Screening his vision and moving the puck East to West and working for rebounds. In a closely fought battle, it's the team with the fewest mistakes that usually wins the fight. So these were a Few of my obsevations but still hard to believe were losing a series when their seemingly outplaying your oppoinent! Go Habs Go!

Wondering.......unrestricted free agent season coming up before long. Anyone got favorites to go after?? I see Ryan Malone...big kid who can play, is a UFA, for instance.

Dodger - Good subject and the free agent market is weak this year : IMO - Top 6 forward - Brian Rolston - Andrew Brunette - Martin Straka - long shot - Jason Williams......Bottom 6 forward : Chris Kelly - Craig Weller - long shot - Eric Nystrom......Reserve "D" man - Steve Montador - Bryce Salvador - long shot - either Brookbank brother. Some of my picks are based on what we lack as a team and of course money.

24 Cups's picture
NM49 - I look at that list of names and I see nothing. Straka is a real possibility and might sign for just one or two years but I don't see him leaving NY so he doesn't count. I don't want to spend the (long term) money on Hossa and Gainey will be one of the last GM's to break the RFA signing code. Therefore, we are looking at a trade. Take a good look at Carter on Saturday night, he's the guy I'm bringing to Montreal and damn the cost. THe Original 24.4 Cups

two four - Granted Carter would be nice and solve a big problem we have and his name was out there when they thought Forsberg was going to be a Flyer and cause salary cap problems, but i'm not sure now, i can still dream. Trades would be nice but we'll have to give up something on our roster for an impact player as our prospects are still unproven in the NHL and most of their exposure has been in the minors as that's the way the Hab's development program hurts future trades but you never know. Hossa is too expensive and a tad soft for me and our top 6 lacks grit already, perimeter boys. The free agent list is very weak and lacks what we want but we have a gap in years for forwards so i wouldn't mind picking up a medium priced forward (more sniper than playmaker) for the top six and free Higgy for what he does best (Gainey type) then add some guts at a minimal cost to support our intimidated forwards but they must be able to take a regular shift and be able to handle the press box. At least with a free agent, though not an impact player, we don't lose a roster player for the time been.

Corporate's picture
Really??? mmm... Komisarek, Kovy, Begin, Lapierre, Latendresse, Stewart, O'Byrne.... I don't know I see this list and see that we do have toughies... Most of those players he either signed or resigned... You say he can't sign tough guys and only softies... Look at where that got Anaheim... Players win games, teams win championships. - Bill Taylor

Corporate's picture
To tell you the truth, I rather have smaller guys that have heart than big loafs like Hatcher that are slow and out of date... Players win games, teams win championships. - Bill Taylor

24 Cups's picture
Dodger - Pittsburgh might due well to sign up Malone before they go after Hossa. Obviously, he would look good in Montreal - he would answer three of our needs all in one package. The only problem with this guy is that he can go south every once in awhile. Can disappear and be inconsistent. Maybe that with change with maturity plus the fact that he is experiencing a deep Stanley Cup run all the way to the finals. The Original 24.4 Cups

The Teacher's picture
You mean...like Ryder?.... "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

24 - That's the dilemma that Pittsburgh faces Hossa/Malone or both $$$. You summed him up pretty good and IMO he'll sign with the Penguins cuz he's a home town boy whose father played and coached there. His bio before Crosby got there was potential offense and very inconsistent defense and he was on the market. If the Habs court Malone i hope they show him the press box cuz in Carbo's eyes he'll be an obstacle in the way of his boy Lats and we know how hard headed he is on that subject and besides i don't think Carbo will get off on Ryan's Tattoos, lol. Go Habs Go.

one win and everything will change. with a win by the Habs tomorrow night, the momentum shifts in Montreal's favour, and the pressure is all on the Flyers. After having a stranglehold on the series, the pressure on the Flyers to win that game 6 at home will be huge... doubt starts to creep in and they don't want to risk having to go back to Montreal for a game 7 and so I believe they will play tight. one win and everything will change.

Habs got to work smarter, more efficiently. Sure hope they been working on their PP and PK.

I have seen games at the Forum and the Bell Centre. I was actually there for a regular season game in March but it looks so much more alive in the Playoffs. A friend of mine was actually at Game 2 and he is not even a Canadiens fan (Lives in Ottawa and goes for the Avs) but he was amazed at the atmosphere and all the fans and said the place was rocking. He said it was an experience he wont soon forget!

Other than a few exceptions, it is great to see all of us get behind this team.As funny as it sounds I think this is the most confident 3-1 down team (and fan base)that I have ever seen.It really seems that the coach and players feel that they can comeback and it makes me believe. This team has given us so much this year and nothing would surprise me!GO!HABS!GO!

I am of the glass half-full opinion as well and when I read some of the posts here, on TSN, on Sportsnet and the G&M, it really gets my blood boiling...some people out there really hate the Habs, I have no problem with that, but I get baited too by others sometimes, when they break out the "too many Europeans" or "too soft" I get annoyed...I did not realize we allowed bigotry to run rampant when it comes to discussing sports, Detroit has a lot of Euros and they have been a model franchise for at least the past 10 years, so no one give me that "can't win with Euros" garbage (in fact, explain why Canada was unable to win hockey gold for 50 years!), they play a different system out there that is all...the consummate hockey player will blend both styles (a la Koivu, he can put points up AND give/take in the hits dept.)...anyway I got sidetracked...back to glass being half-full... The team will be fine...if they get eliminated, so be it...this will lay the perfec groundwork for future runs, the "Holy Crap, this is what playoffs are like?" course...I am sure Koivu went through it (it has been so long, I do not remember), Pleks is slowly learning, he is getting better, I think S. Kost has the grit potential a la Koivu because once in a while it shows here and there, but he is still really young, so give him time to develop...A. Kost may be a tougher nut to crack, he just needs to realize that the hit is gonna maybe hurt for a second if at all, but he seems to be running scared... ALSO, I do not see what is wrong with the style the Habs are using to play (it must be working, because it is generating chances, they just need to relax enough to get that last bit of finishing touch)...I only bring this up because when the Flyers won their back-to-back Cups Broad Street Bully-style, the Habs put an end to that with SPEED AND STYLE...the current formula is a similar idea so I see nothing wrong with that... HABS IN 7! I STILL HAVE FAITH AND I BELIEVE! GO HABS GO!

ok, let's look at the big picture. some players were exposed for not giving good efforts in the playoffs. They will be dealt with, either by trading them, or going out to get gritty players to insulate them. Gainey sees what's happening and will correct it. Next year will be a different story, more depth up front and on D, hopefully a big center or a couple of big snipers, and an experienced and more relaxed goalie and team. 2009 is our year. we're going thru the growing pains this year, and next year we know what to expect. whoever can't cut it, is gone! replaced by more qualified playes.

We will come back in this series. Since all the so called experts have all but written the Habs off, I say, go all out. No defensive minded plays. Defense should join the rush at every opportunity and they should stay at the point and keep the puck in the flyers zone like they did for their two goals in game 4. If your gonna bow out, go out in a blaze of glory. I'M sure that philly would not be able to handle the firepower. TO BE THE MAN,YOU GOT TO BEAT THE MAN!!!

Whatever happens with the remaining playoff game(s), we have to look at the big picture. This team is probably a year ahead of schedule. One of the youngest teams in the league. Long term, that's good. Unfortunately it might be one of the reasons the playoffs have not gone the way everyone hoped. Canadiens did not finish first in the conference by being bad and Carbo a lousy coach. Get our RFA's locked up and sign a much needed center, '09 could be the year. My two cents worth...

Carey WANTS to be the best, that's the only reason he's at the level he is right now. He's a professional, albeit a very young one. Nobody expected us to be where we are, let alone where we finished in the league. So, right now we're probably playing a little over our heads. But, I genuinely think we can pull this off! I really do!! So, being where we are is a huge freakin' bonus to Carey Price. In fact, he said it best when he said, "I'm only 20 years old. And I'm finding out the hard way that the NHL Play-Offs are really tough. But I'd rather learn this at 20 than learn it when I'm 30." It's a bonus that he's being subjected to this at this very early point in his career. Let him learn it, taste it, live it. He's going to be better for it come next year when we take another run at this. We're going to be good for a long time, people. Let these kids learn. I, for one, have enjoyed all of this. Haven't gotten all the results I've wanted, but this isn't over yet. I think Carey has some things to say before this is over. And I'm willing to listen to whatever thunder he brings. I think for a 20 year old kid Carey needed a little break. He will have been given 4 days away from game action. One thing that I think no one by myself has asked this question of themselves. So I pose this question to everyone here and I'd would like to hear what your answer is to: What were you doing at 20 years old? I was working as a complete nobody in a tiny, hole-the-wall factory making barn fan controls in a mindless, no pressure environment with a mentally inadequate boss, and I was making about $5.75 hour! I think we tend to lose sight of the immense pressure that a 20 year old kid is under playing for a world renowned, famous hockey club, the Montreal Canadiens. I'd be laying bricks in my gitchies if that were me! AND I AM A GOALIE!!! Where were the rest of us at 20? Ultimate Die-Hard Since 1986. T.

1. Bad goal by Halak. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Chris's picture
Why are people ripping on Begin for the 2nd goal? The puck came out to Gorges, who only had to dump it into the corner or get a shot in net. Instead he missed wide, ringing the puck around the boards and essentially set up the breakout for the Flyers. That one was NOT on Begin. In a short-handed situation, Gorges HAD to get that shot on net, or not take it. He did exactly the wrong thing and left Begin in the lurch.

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Obviously you dont know your hockey because even Halak admitted it was a bad goal.

Hockey is not football, your analogy doesn't hold water. That first goal came from the outside of the faceoff circle by the boards, there was a defender on the shooter, Halak should have stopped it. Get over it already.

I like your positivity Showey, I think we have a good shot at it too given that we are the superior team, something not many teams down 3-1 can say.

I feel we have been far to dominant and have had way to many chances to be denied. Its not like the series against the bruins where they have shut us down defensivly and forechecked us to death. The flyers back end is terrible which we have exposed to death in games 2,3 and 4. The comeback of the season(yes even more than the rangers game)starts saturday night.

I like your way of thinking Showey....now call the Habs locker room and tell them.

Hi Ian, yeah HIO was having some compatibility issues with Internet Explorer version 7, seems it's resolved now.

what if Price is injured and Carbo isn't telling us. what then? Only because Halak lost is he going back to Price. I really think Price has lost all his confidence. He better get it back in a hurry or the habs will be golfing on Sunday!

We Will see Game 7, you all remmeber I said that,We're bouncing back, whether we will win game 7 i dont know but i guarantee we will see it. I think many Habs would rather burn in hell than to see Flyers win before game 7

Dave Stubbs, who was the reporter who asked if Ryder's actions in the press box were a distraction to the team? Did he seriously believe that the team was aware of what was going on in the press box? I imagine that the press box should be the least of their worries during the game.
