Audio: Carbo coy on Game 4 goalie

posted by Dave Stubbs at 19h05 EST on Apr 29

PHILADELPHIA – Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau says he hasn't yet decided on his goalie for tomorrow's Game 4, and adds that it won't be decided until game time.

That said, Carey Price was in the dressing room after today's practice long before Jaroslav Halak, who mopped up Game 3, and was in good spirits in a long chat with the media. Price's earlier arrival suggests he gets the start, and Carbo's Cheshire-cat grin suggested he knew much more than he was letting on.

We will win tonight, Price will play. This is a wakeup call for the team, it's now or never to destroy those Philly bullies once and for all! Man, I sure could go for a nice big fat juicy Philly Cheesesteaks right now! "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

HABZ24's picture
this is our whole season tonight.2-2, or down 3-1.its almost like price is drinking tylonol pm before game time, he's not alert and too calm.for the luv of us fans carey wake the &%%$ up buddy!! true, down a few redbulls before the game and when we win the cup you can do redbull commercials this summer.stand up ,dont go down early cause the book on you is to shoot high.as it stands now the decision to trade huet was ok cause weve already gone farther than washington. this is he game of the year!! sink or swim. go habs goooooo!!

Man, coaching has to suck. If he picks a goalie and they win, the goalie's the hero. If they lose, the coach is the bum. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

With respect to Dave Stubbs article in this mornings gazette, Will it be Price or Halak? I like your reasoning here Mr Stubbs. I think because the Habs don't want to be 3-1 behind to the Flyers, I believe Price should be in nets. This is a must game for the Habs and they need to go with the goalie who got them to this point thus far. But then again, this decision, as hard or easy as it is, isn't for me to decide. This is why Carbo gets paid the big bucks. Yours Truly, Rocket Richard " YOU MUST HATE TO LOSE " http://leonsinvestmentservices.info

linp's picture
Price said in today's Gazette that he got a piece of every puck that went in last game. My suggestion to him is to drink a few cans of Red Bulls before the game to improve his concentration and readiness.

The Cat's picture
If Price starts, I hope he'll be sharp and move his head and be mobile so that there wont be any more screening excuses, and talk to the defensemen more for sure. We should win tonight. Habs are 4-0 and Price is 2-0 and has .953 sv % on Wednesdays this year. Aside from goaltending, Carbo needs to do a bold move though at some point to wake up the team so they play with more consistence. I dont think its panicking; 10 games into these playoffs and that full effort hasnt come very often. We've won purely on talent but sooner or later, heart has to enter the equation if we're to advance. We've lost 4 of the last 6 and some players are waiting for other players to step up. Koivu cant be the only one sounding the charge. If it was me, start Price tonight, then go with Halak on Saturday in Montreal even if Price wins tonight(Halak has only lost once on home ice in 8-9 games). But I wouldnt go with Halak tonight if the intention is to come back with Price on Saturday. If Halak goes tonight, then he should be left there until he screws up, as he is not a typical second fiddle goalie eventhough he is treated like one. But we all know that isnt going to happen and he will leave the organization eventually. Go habs go.

linp's picture
It appears to me that Price was mentally tired in the last two games. He was not sharp and not focus. You may find excuses. A sharp goalie should be able to stop some of those goals. We really need to adjust our attack. Someone needs to go in front of their net either screen or deflect the puck. # of shoots doesn't count. We have to score.

Batalla's picture
Obviously Price will be the guy. We just have to get some luck on our side since the Flyers have had it all so far (as explained here: http://habsbros.blogspot.com/ )

GO!HABS!GO!PRICE WILL STEAL THE SHOW!

Not sure how effective he will be...wasn't his injury a partially torn groin? Plus wasn't he kinda slow when he was with Boston? The only issue I see is that he will be a presence in front of the net.

everyone, please go on this website: donnels@phillynews.com and read that garbage spewed out by one of the most ignorant biased piece of crap I have ever read. Please send him an email showing your disgust and displeasure. It;'s unbelievable. I wrote him, giving him an earful!

ice_queen's picture
He's writing that kind of garbage just to get a reaction. I think the best reaction is to ignore it. Who cares what he thinks? I'm taking the high road; he doesn't deserve my time or my rants. It doesn't matter that the Flyers are up 2-1 right now ... it's all an anti-American conspiracy, didn't you know? That being said, I feel honoured and lucky that WE have a great team of dignified, fair, and talented sports journalists at The Gazette (not trying to suck up, just telling it like it is).

I don't think he's writing it to get a reaction -- 99% of the people who read this fool are Philadelphians. I've lived here for a few years now and it's amazing to see philly sports fans -- they really believe this junk. They're dealing with years and years and years of losing teams, and this is what it's come to -- a guy writing about conspiracies. But he's making his living... and he's catering to philly sports fans who have nothing else. Plus, someone around here has to cover the city's @$$ for when the Flyers lose the series!

ice_queen's picture
Well in that case, my condolences to Philadelphia fans who have been brainwashed to believe this nonsense....

forskis's picture
Man...the Habs really are the Yankees of hockey...hate'em or love'em and break out the conspiracy theories... http://www.sportsnet.ca/thewire/hockey/2008/04/29/are_the_flyers_playing... In there is a link to a Philadelphia paper that expands on the topic...

wd40's picture
oh my... is that F-F-S? bitter much? LOLOLOLOL "The main reason I won't watch NHL hockey is the special treatment afforded Montreal. It seems as though there are 21,000 referees at the Bell Centre and 2 referees on the ice to call the game in their favour. The penalty at the end of the 3rd period in the first game followed a familiar script. And the bone head announcers seem to overlook this obvious fact. Sad!" man, this really smells like F-F-S.

Bean's picture
What the heck? The Philly story linked to by the wire post is ridiculous. "So far in this series with Montreal, we have seen a sucker punch with intent to injure on Timonen go unpunished [...]" Intent to injure?? Take a couple deep breaths there, Donnellon, it was a quick open-handed smack to the nose. Notice how the article makes NO reference to TK being tied up by the Flyers' bench and Prospal taking a shot at him from the bench . . . right next to an official.

OK since everyone else is doing it I'll throw in my two cents LINE 1 - Kovy, Koivu, Higgins LINE 2 -PLEKS, BROTHERS K LINE 3 - BEGIN, KOSTOPOULUS, SMOLINKSKI LINE 4 - LAPIERRE OR GRABOVSKI, (DOES GRABS STILL EXIST OR IS HE LIKE POKAROO- "HE WAS HERE AND I MISSED HIM AGAIN") RYDER, LATENDRESSE D -IN- STREIT D -OUT- O'BYRNE GOAL- HALAK - one game Just hear me: This is not to punish Price but to make him mad and hungry. He will easily forget being out for 20 minutes of the last game but a full game will allow him to stew. Plus, Halak knows the only way he will see any more action is to get a shutout. This is a Win-Win and Price is in the pipes on Saturday night back at home. LET me spell this out before someone calls me a nasty name: I am a Price Fan, this is a postive suggestion that motivates everyone. Ryder (and Grabs) get one shot and whatever they did to tick Carbo off could be forgiven. I am eager to hear any response, but dont bother if its name calling. Could I even get Mr.Stubbs to respond? _______________________ "GO HABS GO!" "SCORE THE FIRST GOAL!"

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
forget Grabs...but I can live with a Halak start, you give good reasoning and if it fails then Price can come in for the big game at home... but it will make Price 'stew' as you said and give Halak the opportunity to shine because his life/career depends on it... but let me tell you..thats a BIG TIME move by Carb....it won't happen. what is more disgusting is that RYDER won't see the ice, and this series is custom made for him.

habs need to play desperate hockey. play like they did in the regular season! pedal to the metal for 60 minutes. score the 1st goal, and whichever goalie plays, must be sharp and not allow any soft goals. This game will show us what the habs are made of!

The Teacher's picture
like the regular season pedal to the metal for 60 mins? WOW, a new hab fan I see. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Their smug attitude is what's going to cost them.

The Teacher's picture
Yet the NHL allows this sort of statement. Pathetic. Premediated assult? "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

showey47's picture
I hope he doesn't get suspended, the guy is slow and brutal. He will now also be a target for officials because of his actions and now his statement.

showey47's picture
sorry, double post

disgusting instead of going after him lets bury them with goals the best way to silence a team is with a well played beat down

showey47's picture
the thing the habs need to do to win this series. Defence, either block the shot or get the f%^k out of the way. Most of the philly goals have either been deflected in our own net or we are screening our own goalie. If we made life as miserable for the opposing goalie as we have made it for our own goalie we would be up 3-0. The offense has had a tonne of chances, we have hit more posts and miss more open nets then the flyers of had actual scoring chances. The flyers have no business even being in this series and imho are a weaker opponent than the bruins are. The habs powerplay needs more urgency, we are dumping the puck in but are not working hard to retrieve it. Our 2 pp goals came from pounding pucks from the point and going to the net. This is called simplifying the powerplay, this is what we need to do. We win game 4, we will win the series.

24 Cups's picture
showey - good points, I'd also add that Montreal has to take the opening lead and score first. Three games in a row of being down 2-0 puts too much pressure on everyone. The Original 24.4 Cups

Hey, here's a novel concept. How about Carbo talks to Price and sees how he feels. Watches him in practice to see how he plays. And then makes a decision based on that, rather on wild speculation and favouritism, like we are seeing on this site. No question, Koivu is the best player on the ice thus far in the series. So where are all those Saku bashers who were calling him washed up and screaming that we should dump him couple of months ago? Please take one step forward and identify yourselves. :-) It sucks being down a game going into game 4 in Philly. Lots of missed chances. We have had way more chances. Unfortunately, I can't say we were the better team in the first 3 games because the better team includes goaltending and defence, and it includes burying the chances you get. Biron has been exceptional, and he has been the difference in 2 games. But we saw in the third period that he is not superman. When we play well and finish the way we should, we can and did beat him. Twice. In 5 minutes. Well, let's try to stay positive and hope the players do the same. Higgins, in a post game interview, said it quite well. We were outplaying them in many respects and our players took to the ice confident that they could score three in the final 20 minutes to tie it up and then win the game. They almost did. Okay, I'll 'fess up. I could stand the suffering no longer after the second period and changed the channel. But I tuned back in just in time for the major penalty and the 2 goals. I'm glad Higgins and the others didn't give up like I did. That's why they are the players and I am the couch potato. Go Habs. Take it back to Montreal tied at 2 apiece and with all the momentum.

agreed go habs go

did gainey and price have a walk by the st. lawrence today? It worked for kov.

C-Dawg's picture
Here's the thing with Price, as I see it. 1. The kid likes a lot of work. He isn't getting it. As much as I hate Stevens, he was smart to tell the Flyers to throw the puck in the corner away from Price. Price doesn't see many pucks, loses his edge and when they do shoot, they compound the problem by throwing bodies in front of the net so he doesn't get a good look at the shot. Add to that our D has put in 2 shots, and helped screen on at least 3 others.....and you have a goalie that is losing his confidence and giving up goals. If I were Carbo or Melanson, I'd have had Price in net today and have Grabs, Dandy, Stewart etc shoot on him and do drills against him for awhile. Show him some rubber and let him get his game back. It's not like he saw a lot of action last night, so he should be able to take the workout. The only change in the lineup I'd make is sitting Lapierre and bringing in Ryder. I'd move Higgins to Lapierre's spot, and put Ryder on the top line with Kovy and Koivu. Ryder has a great shot, and has something to prove. Higgins, God Love him, is giving 110%, but is snakebitten. Put him on the 3rd line and let his speed and grit wreak havoc without having the pressure of scoring, while giving Kovy and Saku someone who can finish. I still believe we'll win this series. We ARE, despite what some say, outplaying Philly by a wide margin. We are beating Biron, but are shooting wide or hitting posts. The only way to change that is to crash the net and bang in some garbage goals as we did last night. Once our luck starts to change, the floodgates will open. Biron is NOT that good. 110% for 45 seconds, then change 'em up. Bang the boards, crash the net, keep our emotions in check and keep the shooting lanes open for Price to see. If they do those 5 things, we will be victorious.

looks like someones been watching Don Cherry i agree with ur post and i want ryder in the lineup too but not for Lapierre. replace Lentendresse

hey buddy, you have some excellent points especially about price but im sorry to disagree with you on benching lapierre, we need some to mix things up with philly (begin is also a given on that) and i love how fast and hard he plays and how hard he works to get to the puck. For that i must say that the habs must keep those guys in, and have to keep roughing it up a bit. Also, you need to keep in mind that lapierre (again with begin) are most likely the most effective pk players on the team (at least in my heart) and its clear to that point especially when we're short handed and they're skating around in the philly zone with the puck. Other than that, i have to say u did a great job on the post :)

Wow...what is with all the hate towards Price? What happened to, "No matter what happens in the playoffs, we will be thrilled with the progress made"? If anyone thougt the series was going to be easy, then they are being arrogant...the Canadiens will win the series, end of story. Is it just a few fans coming out in frustration, seeing games that can be won at the end of one's fingertips only to be snatched away? It happens, big deal, it isn't the first time and certainly will not be the last by anybody. Have these past few threads been hijacked by trolls and other disturbers? The aura from this site lately just does not feel good at all...

ice_queen's picture
It seems to me that all kinds of characters come out of the woodwork when the Habs are in the playoffs. 1. Crazies who thinking lighting cop cars on fire and smashing windows on Ste. Cat's is a way to celebrate. 2. Bandwagoners who sing praises when the team does well (i.e., Games 1 and 7 of the Boston series) and who go into full-fledged bashing mode when the team does not win by choosing players to hold responsible for failure. Differences in opinion are cool, but hating on players is not. Whatever happened to constructive criticism? Teamwork? Let's get some positivity back into this. Game 4 tomorrow and the Habs will crush the Flyers!

Hey ! First time poster but I've been a reader on this site since a bit. First off I want to adress this sense of panick that is present since last night. I have full confidence that this team can rebound and come back to Montreal with a split. If you look at the Flyers, they took one game in Montreal. They were dominated by the Habs but still found a way to win game 2. We win tomorrow and it's a 2-2 series. Why should we panick ? The habs don't even have to change anything or try to ''steal'' a game. They are dominating the games, all they have to do is finish some of their chances and we should be fine. Easier said than done right ? But if you look at last night, especially the PPs in the 3rd period, it was a night and day difference from the other PPs we had in the game. The Habs were able to control the puck and create lots of good chances. I think they need to build on the 3rd period from last night and keep the momentum going for game 4. Don't expect the Flyers to change anything, so we should once again have many PPs. An other reason to be optimistic for game 4 is that I felt we looked a bit scared last night. It was their first playoff game in Philly and they didn't know what to expect. We have to remember that this is a young team and some of them didnt look focus and it showed in their play. I beleive that tomorrow's game will be different because this team, especially the young players will know what to expect and will be better prepared to play the game. You may think i'm way off with this but if you ever played hockey you know that some cities or arenas are more intimadating then others. Heck, even the Bruins admitted after game 1 in Montreal of not knowing what to expect and being intimadated by the Habs crowd. Also, Price will most likely get the call tomorrow. Demers lived and died by Roy in 93 and I fully expect Carbo to do the same. We need Pleks and Kovy to bring their A game tomorrow night. We need Saku to keep playing like he his because in my eyes he's presently the best player on the ice for both teams. We need Price to make some key saves. If we play to our full potential, their won't be any reason to panick Habs Fans. Hoping we can talk about the Playoffs for at least an other Round ! Go Habs Go

Habsolute - Nice post but you have to have two months posting before making a long post like you did tonight, just kidding, keep them coming and another Saku fan.

Bill H's picture
Good post HabsoluteFan. And welcome to the board.

I know alot of us aren't sure on which goalie to start in game 4, because we don't have a crystal ball. But if Price is truly mentally fatigued, do we have another option other than Halak? Halak is considered a good goalie. He saved our bacon last year. I have full confidence in him. Maybe Price needs a 1 on 1 session with Melanson, going over basics, and telling him to not let the flyers get him off his game, or maybe a talk with his parents to get him back on track. maybe hypnosis? I don't know. Is he too young? Is the pressure getting to him? Not ready for prime time? I just want to win! I don't care who gets the job done, but just win baby!

Why the Captain's the Captain: "When pushed to reveal what he would tell Carey Price following the young goalie’s tough start in Philly, Saku Koivu didn’t hesitate for a second. “He just needs to forget about it and put it behind him,” said Koivu. “Carey has played enough hockey in his life to know that there will tough games like this. All he needs to know is that all his talent and skills haven’t gone anywhere. He’s still got all of that going for him. I’m not that worried about it because I know what he can do.”" Damn right. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Not much of a fan if you will discredit the present Habs....I mean, you kinda need the present to have a future, right?

when the habs win wednesday with Price, please leave this site immediately and never come back this site is for real habs fans who stick by their teams. Your insight will not be missed.

Hey Guys great pic of price at www.nhl.com frozen moment shot

Why would Carbo put in a fatigued Price when he has a fresh great goalie in Halak? because he's a moron, and loyalty means more to Carbo than winning a playoff series! and that's an NHL coach? makes me want to vomit.

Why do you even watch this team play? You really do not seem to have anything positive to say. I do believe you may be a "Leafs" fan in disguise......or maybe you just like to tick people off!!!

Price will get another shot in Game 4 on Wednesday in Philadelphia. "Cary has proven in the past that he can bounce back and come back really strong," said Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau. "I know he can come back and play really strong."" Personally, I like Price and believe he's the future of this franchise, but would rather see Halak in tomorrow night.
