Game 3 set to go in Philly

The Eastern Conference semifinal between the Canadiens and Flyers shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3 on Monday night as the Habs will look to bounce back after a 4-2 loss in Game 2 on Saturday night on home ice.

That game got chippy near the end, and things could heat up again on Monday as the two teams traded shots in the media leading up to Gamde 3 after a sucker punch from Canadiens' Tom Kostopoulos after the Flyers' fourth goal on Saturday, with Flyers' coach John Stevens calling it a cowardly act.

Here's a look at what's being said about Monday's game:

• Dave Stubbs: Habs land in Philly
• Pat Hickey: Biron savours time at home
• Herb Zurkowsky: War of words
• Canoe.ca: Journal de Montréal coverage en français
• Cyberpresse.ca: La Presse coverage en français
• Ray Parrillo, Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers' Umberger showing value in playoffs
• Philadelphia Inquirer: Injured Knuble close to returning
• Ed Moran, Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers' Knuble aims for return in Game 4
• Tim Wharnsby, Globe and Mail: Kostopoulos accepts blame for sucker punch

This line in the Globe article is ridiculous: "Kostopoulos denied he saw Timonen do anything out of the ordinary." I'm not sure how they came up with that interpretation. And then another article "No Suspension for Kostopolous" that starts out: "Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos will not be suspended for his left hook sucker punch to the face of Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Kimmo Timonen on Saturday." I wonder why they didn't simply end the article with "Go Flyers!"? They're just too obvious!

Kevin you forgot to post Jack Todd's article "Give Price a Chance" Everyone on this board should read it and take it to heart. Sometimes we're too critical of a kid who still can't legally drink in the U.S.

Interesting that the Globe reversed the order of Carbo's and Stevens' comments, reporting that Carbo was trying to make hay out of the incident, which actually doesn't make any sense. wtf?

The Cat's picture
Begin will be with Streit and Lapierre...Latendresse with Smolinski and Kostopoulos...I like it!

the cat - When you first look at it you say Lats in Dandy out is a downgrade but actually Lats began to play decent hockey, almost deserving to be in the lineup hockey, with Smols and Tommy K. and then he got hurt so it isn't too bad and Beijing will help the Maxim line. IMO it's plan "B" but acceptable. It's amazing the steps the hurdy gurdy man would take to get his boy in.

Yup, sounds good to me.

Guys I was wrong. It's Dandy who is out, not Begin!

The Cat's picture
I think Dave Stubbs is obviously just trying to brainwash the habs into thinking theyre the underdogs -its brilliant.

BEGIN OUT, LATENDRESSE In FOR TONIGHT! Makes no sense. Why take out Begin?

nn1's picture
Dave Stubbs, I think you're great, but this is just silly: "the Canadiens understand they're in a fight against a very talented, inspired team that really should be leading this series 2-0. . . . with a better bounce or two and had an officiating coin landed on the other side on a pair of calls in the opener, Philadelphia would be returning home looking to oust the Canadiens on friendly ice." Well, by the same token, the Habs outplayed Philly all through game 2, had a couple of bad bounces, and had a missed interference call on the insurance goal when Carey's glove was slapped. If the Flyers "shoulda" won game 1, then the habs "shoulda" won game 2. The point is, the playoffs are full of crazy bounces, and sometimes a team gets beat even though they play better (cf Boston vs. Montreal games 2-6). This series is tied 1-1, and the Canadiens are playing better hockey.

Game day jitters maybe but if there is one guy we live or die with it is the goalie. No earth shattering news there, but like someone else here mentioned it is time for Price to get into the zone, the one he was in the end of the season. It is just a bit nerve racking to have to repeat the line 'he always bounces back' too many times. Lets go Carey. Show em like we know you can.

Norm0770's picture
After the last game he sounded like he was agitated with himself. Much more emotion (any emotion would be more) than he has displayed this season. I think that means he will be trying to prove something to his team, the Flyers and himself.

I wish I would have read Todds story "give Price a chance" before my last post. I agree that win or lose not only Price but this entire team is on the verge of greatness. I hope he remembers what Carbo has been telling him, just be yourself, be Carey... we don't expect the Jesus thing, but we have the faith.

George hainsworth, its true the team's effort has been questionable at times, but good things happen to teams that still win when they play poorly. I expect the habs to kick it into another gear for the remainder of these playoffs.

Habsgod, you predict 5-4 in OT and that Price will rebound big time, allowing 4 goals isnt rebounding big time, not unless the team allows 80 shots on goal lol

Agreed on Latendresse...Good news is that the habs PP and PK is better on the road. And while I like Halak very much and I would like to see him get a chance on Sunday if need be(Price cant get the job done on Sundays for whatever reason), but I think Price is special enough to rebound solidly. My prediction for tonight: 4-1 habs.

I notice your favorite player of all time is George Hainsworth...??? considering he died a dozen years before you were even born, and you would have been in your teen-age years to experience the mid-seventies Habs.... I am at a loss why you would have chosen George over the dozens of Habs superstars that played in your lifetime??? If you like we can slow down the wagon so that you won't hurt yourself when you jump off!

YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!! CALL ME AFTER YOU LOOK HIM UP AND KNOW WHAT HE DID !!! IT'S STILL A RECORD !!! and I guess they let any jerkoff post here if you can get away with slamming someone for who they picked as their fav player. 3rd of all. I am 46 I have been to seven parades. I learned to play from John Fergusson and I played for the jr. habs many years ago. Gainey BLEW IT AT THE DEADLINE...plain and simple...and you have to be a MORON not to see this now !!! Price has played 4 bad games in a row, and I never objected to HIM, what i object to is the team NOT SECURING A PROVEN GOAL SCORER AT THE TRADE DEADLINE when everyone around the team, on the team, observing the team...PROPERLY...can plainly see it was what they were missing...and IT WASN'T A 2ND RD DRAFT PICK IN 2009 !!! BUT I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH PRICE, HE HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE. THE PROBLEM IS THIS... THIS TEAM NEEDS AND HAS NEEDED A GOAL SCORER FOR THE LONGEST TIME... WE DO NOT HAVE ANYONE, WHO SCORES WITH REGULARITY GAME IN AND GAME OUT, in fact half the players on the team look frightened to even try with any vigor. OUR CAPTAIN HAS HAD 16 GOALS IN EACH OF HIS LAST 2 SEASONS... 16 MAN !!! IT'S EMBARRASSING !!! What exactly did he NOT do? I know he didn't trade away young talent and prospects for someone who will just walk at the end of the season. I know he didn't keep a good goalie who wasn't in our future plans anyways. I know he did get in impact player once he made that move. I know that only 8 teams remain and we are one of them and that my friend is unbelievable, well apparently we were gonna be stuck in the basement. Are you referring to the team that had the most goals for in the regular season? Is it that team that you think needs Marian Hossa, who has been mediocre at best in Pittsburgh? Take off the caps lock and go watch Sundin & Kaberle play golf.

Norm0770's picture
First, stop shouting. 5 goals in game 7 against Boston, 4 goals in game one and nearly 70 shots directed toward the Flyers net in game 2. I don't think the team is in a scoring drought.

So the flyers claim to have played their best game on Saturday, if I was a flyer I would hope that wasn't our best game because the Habs were about 75% and still gave you guys a fit. Biron was good and I understand you have to be good to be lucky and vise a versa but we were shooting the damn puck right at his glove.

I think Biron is smarter than he is good. Pleks has had several opportunites and being the smart player he is he mixes up his moves. Biron also aware that Pleks doesn't have necessarily one go to move ( although his best is that deke where he fakes twice and goes forehand with a deke). Biron read him like a book on that breakaway because Pleks scored several like that this year and then went to go back to the forehand but was pokechecked in game one. The next time, especially with time to think Pleks was going backhand all the way.....hell I knew it. Biron stuck it out and made a nice save....he won the paper, rock, scissors battle ....this time. Biron commetned about how often we go to the backhand and it is true...we do do it often...perhaps too often. Kovy, Saku, Pleks, Andrei, Higgins all go to the backhand quite often....even Ryder and Lats have been doing it this year. I never noticed untile the commentator mentioned that Biron said it ....if you think about it it's very true.

the real vinnydj's picture
Well I agree, I have noticed that.

you got to feel good about our chances tonight. we missed an *unbelievable* number of scoring chances on Saturday night. it's not like the Flyers shut us down; we were able to play our free-wheeling style for 2 straight games and did not have the same defensive woes we showed against Boston.

go habs go! i think we will tonight in philly i think the score will 5-4 in o.t. with s.kostitsyn scoring the winner! when the habs win game one of a series and take a 1-0 lead they are 57-9 in their history so i like our chances tonight and to win this series .........price will bounce back big-time! kovy will be kovy and will again be our best player and koivu will be our best forechecker and face-off guy and the hardest working forward. o'byrne will kick it up another notch along with komisarek, and hamrlik!i think we need latendresse's big body to stand in frontof the net and he needs to take the place of dandeneault who hasn't done anything! well that's it for me until later can't wait until game time!

frank81's picture
I sure hope the Flyers don't score four goals. The Price/Huet debate was bad enough - we don't need a sequel with Price/Halak.

Price was not great but he was not poor either. Don Cherry actually did a good segment on him showing that our players were responsible for the first two Flyer goals. Koivu screened him completely on one and a defenseman deflected the other one and it rose sharply off the stick and found the perfect hole right under the crossbar. The last goal he had his glove whacked and it wasn't because he sat back he was moving towards the puck and the Flyer just made a nice play. He still looked a little shaky at times but he was not to blame by any means. Biron was the culprit .....the only culprit responsible for us losing that game.....noone else on the Flyers stood out to me at all. We dominated that game everywhere except where it mattered.

Norm0770's picture
The first goal where he was screened by Koivu was symptomatic of the reason he went down to Hamilton in February...Going down too early. At 6'3" Price should not be screened by Koivu at 5'9" and had he been standing it would have hit his shoulder instead of the top corner. Even Price even rated his performance 6/10 on Saturday, not good. Typically the team in front of the goaltender will need more than 2 goals to win and as you said Biron stole the game for Philly. Price will bounce back and have a great game tonight.

Most goalies go down if they cannot see the puck...as they should. You note Price is 6'3"......great... the crossbar is four feet high. He went down in a position that took away as much net as possible and also gave him a chance to find the puck......the shot was a good one and beat him but he had no idea the puck was even shot. He didn't face the shooter.. go down and then have the guy shoot. Koivu would no doubt say that he shouldn't have screened his goalie. At the same time though if Koivu blocks that shot then it doesn't matter....it's one of those plays for Koivu that either he blocks/deflects it and he is the hero or he screens his goalie and hangs him out to dry....unfortunately the latter was the case. If Price were standing the shooter (who has the angle to tell if Price is screened) would have simply shot low......Price made him make a perfect shot by going down and taking as much net away as possible ...he made the perfect shot). I don't think Price did anything wrong or anything he wouldn't do again in exactly the same situation....Koivu on the other hand probably would.

Vid's picture
I'd say most butterfly style goalies go down. Because of Patrick Roy's success a lot more emerging goaltenders have a modified butterfly style or at least have some aspects of it in their game and players (well some of them) know this. In particular defenseman are more likely to shoot high from the point in recent seasons than low. If there is one thing that I've noticed about Price is that screened or not he tends to go down early sometimes. It was the reason why he was sent back to Hamilton in the first place. If Price hadn't been so deep in his net on the first goal he probably would've blocked it. He simply wasn't alert enough and was surprised by a very average shot from the blueline. Carey has blocked much tougher shots through more traffic than that. The second goal was most likely a deflection but again Price was too deep in his net. Don't remember if he went down on that one too. I guess it was one of those nights where Price couldn't get into his groove due to facing less shots. It's something he'll learn to deal with I'm sure.

Any lineup changes for tonight? I'd like to sit Lapierre & Dandenault inserting Latendresse & Ryder in their spots.

ebk's picture
who would be the fourth line center?

Smolinski..... and the third line center could be Higgins is what I am guessing he is alluding to. That grinder line should be our fourth line ....we have the players to make that happen and did all year long. I'd rather leave Laps move Streit back and drop Gorges or O' Byrne and Dandy and get Ryder and Lats playing again.

The Cat's picture
Id put Ryder in, maybe he'll do what other habs forwards can't seem to do: put the puck up!

I noticed that a lot Saturday night. Seems that the way to beat Biron is to go up high on him. Though he played good, most of our shots were ice-level. I hope the team watched some videos of him yesterday.

it didn't take the flyers long to figure out that's where to beat Price.

The absolute worst at raising the puck is Koivu. He is incredibly shifty and an elite passer but he AlWAYS shoots low and goalies know it. He does generate rebounds by doing this but he rarely scores himself. He creates so many opportunities for himself in the slot area but should try going high now and then to mix it up because he would definitely score more. Pleks is really good at mixing things up and although he has a better shot than Koivu I think Koivu could score nearly as many if he started using the upper half of the net.

Vid's picture
It's true, I've noticed that about Koivu for a long time in that he rarely shoots high. Another observation, when's the last time you saw Koivu do a slapshot? I can only remember Koivu scoring on a slapshot once and it was against a Boston goalie a season or two ago. He never does slap shots either. Plekanec in my mind is our next Koivu with more scoring ability, not to say they play similar styles but Pleks is a great two way center, makes great passes and can score. Plekanec sometimes has a tendency to pass too much like Koivu. If he can improve his faceoff skills, in a year or two he'll essentially take over Koivu's role. Pleks might not be scoring much now but I feel like once he has more experience under his belt he'll become just as clutch as Koivu.

Lee Hayes's picture
Here's hoping Mr.Gainey has the chance to take walk and talk with Ryder this off season. We all know the effect that had with our assumed malcontent from last year. I for one would not like to see a natural goal scorer leave the team. Go Habs Go

24 Cups's picture
Lee - Ryder is gone and Habs fans need to get over it. I would much rather see us take a run a Fabian Brunnstrom and give him the money we are now giving Ryder. I realize it's a bit of a gamble but we are short on immediate prospects up front. He is 1/3 Holmstrom, 1/3 Alfredsson, and 1/3 Franzen (in theory that is). This guy could really bloster our ranks up front and maybe play on a line with Lats who should step it up a bit in his 3rd year. Grabovski and Lapierre could fight it out to see who would centre the line. The Original 24.4 Cups

Habhopeful's picture
Its funny how kosto's punch at the end of the game gets mentioned over and over and Hartnell's sucker punch on Plekanec at the end of the second period and his cross check on kosto' after the whistle around the net is never brought up... "11 'Till 25" "If I wanted to hear from an ass, I would fart..."

In the larger scheme of things it is relatively minor, but Carbo needs to rejuvenate his fourth line, Max, Dandy and Streit, either by changing them up or challenging them to contribute and giving them the icetime to do so.

As usual I will be hoping to see a post later today saying Ryder will be playing although I have become accustomed to the disappointment that goes along with this line of wishful thinking.

24 Cups's picture
kRob - It's time for Dandy to sit out a game. That's not being overly critical of his play but it's just that we have to get some spark going with the Lapierre line. Lats or Ryder, the choice is up to Carbo who is a little closer to what the right call should be than posters on HIO. Yesterday 'ebk' brought up a good point that Carbo should also seriously think about double shifting some forwards (Kovalev, Higgins) on that line to help shake it up a bit and give it some spark. Truth be told, we're in a bit of a spot here. The need for a big centre is now more evident than ever before. Dandy is a 4th liner, not a 3rd liner. Ryder has been in a slump all year and doesn't have the confidence of the coach. Lats is only 20 years old. Streit is great on the PP but strictly average on the wing/defense in a tough playoff series. With Brisebois out it pretty well dictates that Streit must play. So, it comes back to Lats or Ryder with Kovalev, Higgins, or Sergei K taking some extra shifts. Something has to give here because the Flyers' forwards are a lot better than the Bruins forwards. Not to mention that Knuble could be back for Saturday. The Original 24.4 Cups
