Canadiens begin practice for Round 2

posted by Dave Stubbs at 13h00 EST on Apr 23

The Canadiens will skate this afternoon at Jacques Lemaire Arena in LaSalle, Billy Joel having taken over the Bell Centre for his concert tonight.

We'll be at the Bell Centre late afternoon for coach Guy Carbonneau's media briefing and to speak with players; audio from those interviews will be uploaded this evening.

Also: we're recording a playoff PuckCast this afternoon, so look for that here later in the day. Tomorrow: Inside/Out will attend the Canadiens' morning skate and upload audio from that in advance of tomorrow's Game 1 in the Eastern Conference semi-final against the Philadelphia Flyers.

solomone12....I have to agree with you that at this stage in their careers "O" has more upside, but in saying that, I'm thinking Carb is looking for some experience blended with the young guys on the team. I thought game 7 was Breezers weakest of the playoffs so far, maybe he IS running out of gas and Carbo should keep an eye on him.....but if he bounces back ???....and they did pitch a shutout !!!

Connecticut Man1's picture
My one prediction: Concerning scratching a healthy Breezer or Dande and inserting a rookie in either of their places. Carbo MAY sit them if the Habs are up 3-0 in a series. Just to give the old guys some rest for the next series and the rookies some experience where they can't do too much damage. Otherwise? I don't expect either of those two will sit unless they are badly hurt. And I am pretty certain Stewart won't play unless about 5 other guys ahead of him are on the IR. That is just the way it is and should be, IMHO.

habsguy's picture
thats kinda the response I expected.......children should be in bed at this time !!!!

Hey Y, I remember back when you were gloating that Calgary was having great weather when we were inundated with snow. How are you enjoying the temperatures in the minus double digits today? Now, now Teach. Be nice in the classroom. ;-)

habsguy's picture
Did ya ever think that maybe O'Byrne is just a rookie, prone to rookie mistakes and that we already have enough young players in the lineup now !!!!!

solomone12's picture
I understand your point, but I just think that on the whole, O'Byrne has way more upside than Brisebois, especially against Philly.

Didja ever think that Brisebois is a has been, soft and slow, prone to the up the middle giveaway (known as pulling a breeze)? Didja ever think O'Byrne might have something more to show us? Didja ever think Breezer has compromising pics of Carbo and thats why he plays?

The Teacher's picture
Didja ever post something rational? "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Didja ever post a reply that wasnt an ad hominem?

The Teacher's picture
Didja ever answer a question that was posed to you? "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Didja ever ask something intelligent? Or are you more interested in trying to one up me?

blah, it's late, I'm bored, it'll do. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

I enjoyed this little argument. It was very cute. LOL! I don't want to be in it. But it was cute.

Practice? Practice? Who needs practice? Come on. Just wear the tie. Practice?

Faith. Faith. Faith. Have some faith. We're going to win. I love that motherf#$*ing tie. I won't tell you what I imagine doing with it...and Carbo. Sorry Mrs. Carbo. I have to go to class tonight. Won't see the game but have my jersey on. Cheer loud.

I'd be careful not to overuse the tie. What if it's like a magic lamp!? Only good for a certain number of wishes.

solomone12's picture
Can someone explain to me what Carbo has against O'Byrne? We need his physical presence, and he needs to play so he can improve.

gumper's picture
This is a bit off topic, and I haven't been following the thread so someone may have already mentioned it, but did anyone else notice how much the puck was bouncing around Monday at the Bell? My son said there was an Ultimate Fighter competition the night before and speculated that the ice was bad for that reason. It surprises me if that's true. I thought they knew how to make ice in Montreal. I wonder if we'll see the same Thursday after the Billy Joel concert? Bouncing pucks and bad ice make me nervous.

I don't know but your son is very observant if that is true. Go Habs! Go! Let's all get on the same side here. Come on. Let's cheer together.

Looking forward to playing Philly. I hope that Carbo considers playing Ryder. He deserves a chance. Heard that Carey Price is not one of those players nominated for rookie of the year. Too bad, although I am sure he would rather have his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup instead!!

The S1C1L1AN's picture
GO HABS GO

That's the 20 players i would like dressed and the only tinkering i would have is Ryder on Saku's line and Higgy on Maxim's. Unfortunately Carbo has already stated that he's going to dress the same lineup as the 7th game as he sticks to his pee wee superstition of keeping the same lineup after a win.

gumper's picture
I have to say, I'd really like to see if putting Ryder on with Kovy and Koivu would get him started, and Higgins would add some scoring to the Lapierre line. Good ideas.

Greg's picture
Oh man. Solid all around. Find a weak spot in there. i dare you. Ryder deserves another chance. GO HABS GO!!! 12 POUR 25!!!

Ryder has had more chances than my dog has fleas; he just isn't getting it done this year. Don't know why, don't really care. There are a bunch of players just chomping at the bit to take his place, so let one of them do it.

Connecticut Man1's picture
Considering Breezer is leading team D offense, I'd say that there is a glaring weak spot.

Dandy over Ryder, Ryder needs to play on a top two lone, find him a spot there, Lapierre needs a keeper and Dandy covers his back.

Ed's picture
I just heard Carbonneau on TSN saying he did not see the need to make any changes for the game against Philly.

Dandy was not non existant, he played 8-10 mins maximum in six games, he was on the ice for two goals against and one of them was in game one. We need players to play vs the top line and he is great defensive forward. In close games Ryder scares me defensively. Somebody has to be the hi forward.

24 Cups's picture
1515 - In fairness, the Habs only have to juggle the first five names. The last three will probably never play and are only on the practice roster. I'm as surprised as everyone else that Dandy is playing every game - not because I don't like him but rather in light of the fact that he sat out so many games near the end of the year. I can't believe that Lats won't get a chance and I'm sure they will return to Ryder as well. Can't see Streit or Lapoerre sitting though. The Original 24.4 Cups

Lats is another guy that needs to be a top six forward to be effective. He is too slow to defend a top line. he is big body finisher who needs to play with skilled guys, again, Baby K has taken away a top six spot.

Dandy gives you poise and professionalism as an experienced playoff performer. His comments after gmae six were very insightful and he is a presence in the room if things go awry, he has been there and done that. We dress 20 players, we need offense from line 1 and 2 and we need defensive hockey from 3-4 and those are the guys that you need late in games when u have the lead. I like Ryder but he is a top 6 guy and the baby brother from the OHL has taken that spot. No room at the inn.

24 Cups's picture
Hockey 11 - You make some very good points in your three posts relating to starting rosters. For the first time in a long time, we have depth and more good players than we can use at any one time. Many fans of this site are frustrated and obviously have differing viewpoints. Fair enough. All I would add is that nobody should get ice time right now because "they deserve to play" or "need another chance" or "will only improve with experience". Right now, it's all about winning. Nothing else matters. Carbo did a great job of utilizing players in the first round - let's hope he has the ability and courage to make changes if things start to go awry. Not taking anything away from Boston but that series should never have gone to 7 games. We don't want to make the same mistake against Philly. Just ask Washington. The Original 24.4 Cups

I don't know if anyone's posted this, but I saw this video clip and had to share it. Remember '86? Now is the time to believe. The Drive for 25 is on! Go Habs Go!

Nice link. I see they give Montreal the edge in offense, defense, PP, PK, discipline and goaltending. The only edge they give to Philly is in faceoffs, which has virtually been a tie: Regular season - Philly 20th at 49.3%; Montreal 22th at 49.0%. Playoffs - Philly 5th at 51%; Montreal 7th at 50.5%.

That's a crazy stat. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

speaking of Billy Joel, did you notice when the camera guy...or girl...found Neil Young in the 3rd period of the San jose game last night. He was either really stoned, chearing for the Flames or maybe both.

The Cat's picture
Its all good triplex, it doesnt really matter if we the fans take the flyers lightly, lets hope the habs dont take them lightly. And after round 1, Im sure they wont. Philly is just too banged up and a bit old to play consistently like Boston did. Yes Philly took out the caps, and other than a couple of bad periods, pretty much dominated them. Flyers were 13-4-3 vs the southeast this year. Flyers were 7-8-5 vs the northeast. Flyers also did poorly all year vs teams with speed: Montreal and Buffalo come to mind. Heres to a great -and hopefully- stress-free series!

The Cat's picture
I may have had to learn something triple x, had I said Montreal would sweep the bruins.

TripleX's picture
I admire your optimism. Do you base this on the fact that the Flyers are that bad, or do you think the Habs are that dominant? Listen, I hope you are right, that would be fantastic. I just don't see the Habs taking two games in Philly.

The Cat's picture
Flyers wont be as tough as the bruins. The flyers are like the habs, kinda like habs-lite if you will (a lesser powerplay, and not as good 5 on 5), I think the habs can sweep.

TripleX's picture
LOL...some fans never learn. Never underestimate the opposition, the Flyers took out a very dangerous and motivated Caps squad. We would all love a sweep but I think that is unrealistic.

24 Cups's picture
Cat - I think we should be careful. Philly's PP is very good and I'm sure they might insert Carter on the wing to replace Knuble. No offense to:-), but our PP is no longer functioning as the #1 unit. Lots of room for improvement if we're going to take advantage of Philly's rough play. Their forwards impress me a lot. They may not have a fancy dan like Kovalev but they have lots of talent up front. They would probably come out ahead of us at forward if Gagne and Knuble weren't injured. If we're going to win this series I think it will be with out speed causing probems for Philly's defense and Price outdueling Biron. Four straight? I wouldn't count on that. The Original 24.4 Cups

kevrob's picture
24 cups, Your sig really should be 24.25, what are you going to do if we get to 10 wins? 24.10 this means that we have backtracked. we have won 4 games out of 16, which is 25% or 0.25 With your bookkeeping, if we win 16 games we only have 16% of a cup. I am just sayin' you know, I would hate for a mathematical error to keep us from the 25th cup.

24 Cups's picture
kevrob - Another regular poster by the name of kRob (don't check for his name, automatically go to the longest post of the day:-) gave this moniker to me and I wear it with pride. Here is how it works. I received .2 for the Habs making the playoffs. I then receive another .2 for each playoff series that our boys win. Boston made it 24.4 So once we kick Philly's butt I will be at 24.6 We will then over come all odds to beat Pittsburgh and I'll move on to 24.8 Finally, the Canadiens will win in overtime in the 7th game of the final to beat San Jose (Tom The Bomb from Brisebois & Smolinksi) to bring me to the cherished 25.0 Cups. Hope this helps explain the journey! The Original 24.4 Cups

that was a beaut of a shot at krob, 24.25 :)

24 Cups's picture
Anyone - how come when I do my own spacing at the end of a sentence (regardless of how long I make the spacing), the site changes back to just one space after a period or word? Take a look at "Boston made it 24.4" to see what I mean. Just wondering. The Original 24.4 Cups

Corporate's picture
Not as good on powerplay??? They were second only to the habs... Which is really good.. Against the caps they showed that they can score with a man advantage, unlike the Canadiens... I agree we should beat them but let's not take this team lightly. As I mentioned before they have lots of character. They were able to play a great game yesterday without Knuble. That says a lot... Players win games, teams win championships. - Bill Taylor

kevrob's picture
They should put one of the KOstitsyn brothers with KOvalev and KOivu so we can call it the knockout (KO) line.

Since there will be three of them how about T(triple)KO line? go habs.

kevrob's picture
TKO it is!

usversusthem's picture
I dream that someday Carbo will pull the goalie late in the game and send out this lineup: KOivu KOmisarek KOstitsyn KOstitsyn KOstopoulous KOvalev I don't know what the odds are of a team having six players whose last names start with the same two letters but I think we might... might be the only team ever to have this many. Someone should try to find out!

cautiousoptimist's picture
Bah here's what THN says about the Colorado-Detroit goalie matchup: "As expected, goaltending was a question mark for the Red Wings in the first round, but Chris Osgood looked solid in replacing Dominik Hasek. Keep in mind, Osgood has won a Stanley Cup. Funny, Colorado was shutout in three of four meetings between the two teams this season, but still THN likes the Avs. Theodore is the real deal and has given his team a chance to win every night. Edge: Colorado" 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

WindsorHab-10's picture
That's the same Hockey News that picked our Habs to finish 13th this season. Look closely and you'll see that They've given the Flyers the edge in most stats but yet picked the Habs in 7.

usversusthem's picture
Gotta say, their preview doesn't make a lot of sense. They seem to say one team is stronger in something, give the final advantage to the other team. Then when it looks like they've given most of the advantages to Philly, they say things that suggest the Habs will win convincingly, and only pick them in seven. It's like they're doing their best to cater to fans of both teams without actually choosing a side...

I wonder if Carbs sticks with the Breezer on defence against the Broad street bullies or does O'Byrne draw in given his size and physical capabilities.

Hoegarden's picture
It'll be easier to toss Breezer into Price than O'B.

It's hard to say because the Breezer is leading all D-men in points... but he also lead in negativily on the Give-away/take-away category @ -8. It could go either way, but I favor O'Byrne with Saku returning for Offense, Vetran expereince, and PP help. Carbo's a tricky man and rarely changes a line-up after a win.

Breezer, O'Byrne, who cares. As long as we're winning! Although I'd put Breezer in, he's earned it! "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

they seem to spend more time attacking Habs FANS, the French language, etc. then talking hockey - either about the match-up or the Flyers strategy, other than to "knock the ****ing sh** out of those frogs". Nice.
