Canadiens eager to finish series

posted by Kevin Mio at 17h47 EST on Apr 16

From The Gazette's Herb Zurkowsky:

Leading 3-1 in their quarterfinal playoff series against Boston, and seemingly in the driver’s seat heading into Thursday’s fifth game at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens practised only 30 minutes late Wednesday afternoon.

All the forwards wore red sweaters, while the defencemen were all in white, making it difficult, if not impossible, to speculate on any lineup changes. The only player not on the ice was Mark Streit, given the luxury of a therapy day, according to a team official. Right-winger Michael Ryder, a healthy scratch for the 11th time this season on Tuesday, wasn’t made available to the media.

The Canadiens, to a man, obviously said they want to win on Thursday and avoid having to return to Boston for a sixth game, Saturday.

Gritty forward Steve Bégin, for one, is taking nothing for granted. Bégin was with the Canadiens in 2004, when they overcame a 3-1 deficit against the Bruins, capturing the series in seven games. Montreal was forced to win the last two games at Boston – the same scenario facing the
Bruins.

“It takes four games to win a series, and we’re missing one,” Bégin said. “We know they’re going to be ready. They don’t want to lose here, especially after last night. They’ll play harder.”

We have scored 9 goals in the series so far. Our top lin players have their names in on 4 of those goals. The grind line is is on as many and young Sergi has a couple. The game tonight will be a contribution from each line and I think we win it 5-2 with 2 powerplay goals. We can wait for the Flyers to show up after that

Why do we have to be so sensitive to what the T.O. media has to say about the Habs? Granted the CBC seems to have a core of dinosaurs that are still clinging to the black and white photos of the 1967 cup, but I think that the tide is turning. I am in Guelph/Waterloo and sometimes listen to the Fan 590 in the car (it the Team 990 when I am at the computer) and to my surprise there is little Habs jealousy on toronto's sports radio. For example: the morning guy, Don Landry, stated he is cheering for the Habs this playoffs and I heard a great interview with Bulldogs head coach Don Lever yesterday afternoon in which Carey Price and the rest of the Habs rooks were heavily praised. I doubt that Denis Casavant would be rooting for the Leafs had the tides been turned. Anyway all this just to say lets just concentrate on the great season the Habs are having and laugh at Don Cherry et al. losing their minds. Go Habs Go, never mind about T.O. and the Leafs.

This is nice to hear and it is well said. Thank you for writing it.

Interesting post.

Sick of listening to the T.O. media and Leaf fans get down on the Habs.If you look around the league all of the series are close and I believe the Habs have not played their best hockey and are still up 3-1.Koivu will make a great addition in the next round and I think the PP will get going soon.

if all goes according to plan...are we playing the Rangers? which means AVERY???

If Philly wins we play them. If not, then unless NJ can come back, we face NYR _____________________________________________________________ 1. February 19th, 2008, a day which will live in sublimity.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
thanks, of course we play the bottom seed... but enough of that, first order of business first.

Habs will get the lowest seed remaining after round one which at this time could be Philly or if Philly loses we get the winner of NYR/Devils.

I thought that after the first round it's by points total rather than seeds. Am I wrong?

The Habs play either philly or the caps. You are right Timo. GO HABS.

News to me. I have no idea. _____________________________________________________________ 1. February 19th, 2008, a day which will live in sublimity.

Slightly off-topic, but Sergei Samsonov just signed a three-year $7.6M contract with Carolina. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Would be great to finish it on Thursday and hope the other 3 series go as long as possible. Boston is desperate and will go all out. I hope the crowd gives the team the needed momentum to wrap this up.

So long Boston! And god bless. Will Kovy explode? 13 to 25

Please someone with some pull (DAVE), that’s able to contact the Canadiens pass on this message……directly to Begin 1st tell him he is playing awesome and to continue 2nd more importantly please tell him to stop shooting high and wide on the rush, as this usually results in an odd man rush the other way. This is what provoked the overtime winner in Boston and I noticed he did it 3 times last game.. The last thing we want is losing the cup because of a shot that was high and wide that flies around the board, giving the other team a rush. Just a thought..

linp's picture
I have noticed that too. Each time he enters the offensive zone with the puck, he tries to shoot. After that he looks back at the bench as if he has done what Carbo told him. Did he know by now that a shot like that would never score? He just gives the puck away.

Can't wait until tomorrow night!

Koivu ready for the second round. Great news! Now he can practice with the team until then and our C will bring his A-game. http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/250024.html

Not even going to comment on Don cherry tonight..what an idiot, Price put them 1st overall? ayiyi so out of touch. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time."

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
I missed Bias corner...what did he say about Montreal? --------- 1. THIS IS WAR 1. We will win the CUP 2. The BELL CENTRE should be rebuilt to sit 80,000 fans 3. Beware of the T.R.S.

The Teacher's picture
He praised them but you can tell someone made him do it... "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time."

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
interesting...like when he posed with the Montreal Soldiers and they showed it 2 weeks in a row. the good thing is the farther the Habs go, the more we can enjoy listening to the CRINGE in the voices of Cole, Cherry and Mclean, heck even Kelly HRUDY is going anti-Hab. I could not believe the other night how everything that came out of COLE and MULLENS mouth was about Boston and what Boston has to do to get that first goal...it was amazing....once in a while Cole would throw in a comment about Price being the real deal...then back to Boston! (and yes I have RDS, but I like to hear them suffer in their job when Montreal is winning)

The Teacher's picture
I agree about the other night, but really it has been the last few nights. It is ridiculous. such a turnoff. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time."

I stopped getting mad...now its just added entertainment, and great picture! hang on to that one till we send Boston Packing!

"This year, we had 19 Habs games on Hockey Night in Canada. That’s up from 13 last year... some broadcasts were national, some were just in Quebec, some everywhere but Southern Ontario, but all were available on our regional feeds." As a hab fan living just outside of Toronto, I have to ask, "So how many Hab games were available on a Saturday night in Southern Ontario when they weren't playing the Leafs?" Oh yeah, ZERO. "Additionally, we devoted an entire Saturday pre-game show to the live ceremony of Bob Gainey’s sweater retirement - in both languages." Actually, it wasn't live, it was tape-delayed. The only live version was on RDS. CBC used the tape delay to cut out a large part of the ceremony so that what was left would fit into the time slot alloted to it in the pre-game show. “Don Cherry is anti-Montreal.” Not true. Just last night, Don was adamant that Carey Price should be the hands-down rookie of the year. He has been one of Price’s biggest promoters this season. Don has always been a huge fan of Kirk Muller. Nobody was a bigger supporter for Saku Koivu when he was being criticized for his linguistic shortcomings earlier this season." All that says is that Don has good things to say about certain members of the organization, and not the team as a whole. I'll believe him when he says "I would like to see the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup." Until then, they're just blowing smoke and talking semantics. . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

Anybody look at the goalie stats so far in the playoffs? PRICE leads heaps of categories, excluding minutes played. GAA 1.19 SV% .957

Fer_hab's picture
I still believe that Ryder has a Hat-trick left in him b4 these playoffs are over. After that see yeah buddy, unless you want just over a Mill to re-sign here (ONE YEAR).

linp's picture
Playing Dandy and not Ryder is playing down to the Boston level. I admit Dandy checks hard. But when he has the puck in the offensive zone, he doesn't have the skill to score or to set up. I guess Carbo is playing not to lose.

Not losing is good, Dandy is one of our BEST defensive forwards, do we miss Ryders production? Hey if Kovy, Pleks, SK, AK or Higgins can't score we are screwed. Think about this, who would you rather have protect a lead Dandy or Ryder? Dandy all the way. Game 3 was a 2-2 tie in regulation and 1-1 in game four, we need strong defensive play from these players because the PP has gone south and the 5 on 5 Offensive players are not getting it done. Ryder also was not moving the puck to Kovy his linemate and that is a no-no.

filincal's picture
Agreed, Dandy fights for every puck and usually comes from behind to take them away. He's still has great wheels. I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!!

GHG33's picture
I hope so too. Ryder is one of my fav players. Just needs to keep shooting the puck. Drive For 25 Is Alive!

filincal's picture
I would rather see Streit sit for a game in exchange for Ryder ,but we need Streit on the PP. Maybe Gui could sit, but he adds some much needed size. Hmmm I'll leave it to Carbo to decide. I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!!

imafogdevil's picture
Being made not available to the media means the coaches didn't want to expose him to answer questions on why he was the one to sit. I am sure he was pissed. I'm pretty sure that unless he gets the same money or more, he is outta here next year. And why shouldn't he. When other players have been worse than him, he has been scratched. The same goes for the last game. Hardly the reason they lost on Sunday, he is scratched, when there were worse players on the ice, again. And as for calling him underachieving, he doesn't and hasn't had the line support that he had last year or the year previous. When you bounce around the lineup and aren't geive the opportunity to work it out (yes, I said it, contrary to popular belief), then you will underachieve. Again, he is second on the team in hits. I hope this new benching doesn't last and he gets back in the lineup. Better than having two defencemen as forwards. ___________________________________________ It can only get better!! Go Ryder, Go Habs!

JIMVINNY's picture
Unfortunately for Ryder, playoffs are not the time to "work it out", especially when he's playing on the second line, and our first line isn't scoring, either. It's just too late for him now.

ZepFan2's picture
Yikes. Samsonov was signed by Carolina, 3 year - 7.6 mil..

24 Cups's picture
Zep - If Samsonov can get that and for three years, then Ryder will surely get a decent deal (money & term) from an offensively challenged team. It won't matter what he does in the playoffs, he'll still get the deal. Samsonov - my entire day is shot after hearing this. The Original 24.2 Cups

24 - What i can't understand is what was the urgency in signing him was and offering that money cuz i'm sure the rest of the league wasn't interested especially at those bucks , unless he played the Russian card which doesn't seem to come into play cuz his wife is from the U.S.A. Good luck to him as we play him at least 4 times next year with his defensive prowess.

Blitzen's picture
Why is your day shot? Now that he has his contract, Carolina will be stuck with him as he puts it on autopilot and coasts for three years. _____________________________________________________ Remember February 19th: The Comeback

ZepFan2's picture
Ryder should definitely get a decent deal and probably with Boston, especially if Julien is still coach. He's going to come back to haunt us one day...sigh

sidhu's picture
It seems Ryder is definitely going to sign elsewhere. Question for everyone is what contract you would offer to Streit given his play during the regular season and playoffs? Would you low-ball him (like we did Souray) so he is constructively told to go elsewhere? __________ 16 for 25 all for one

RudeMood19's picture
Re-sign. In a heart beat. Bigger concern: Andrei Kostitsyn is a restricted free agent. I hope we either re-sign him and that no one pulls a Kevin Lowe black ball move _____________________________________________________________ 1. February 19th, 2008, a day which will live in sublimity.

Mental fatigue aka pressure.

the_larry's picture
Therapy day for Streit hmm.... Somethings wrong with him because he's not the same Streit who was so solid for us down the stretch.

frank81's picture
For whatever it's worth, in TSN's Ice Chips section they say "Mark Streit (foot) did not practice on Wednesday, taking the day as therapy day". Didn't he hurt his foot blocking a shot in a game against Buffalo?

Maffu's picture
Yes he did. Playing with pain likely.

It is certainly painful to watch, Carbo has to realize the if a guy can't go, we have others that can. All Streit does really well is the PP and even that is sputtering, put Ryder back until Saku is ready. If Cube is back then OB will sit because the Breeze is scoring. Don't overthink things, just get us strong willing participants, no AHL guys though, these games are too tight and the regulars need the confidence of playing with regulars.
