A look back at Game 4

After a slow start that saw the Bruins take the game to the Canadiens, Montreal was able to bounce back and score the game's only goal to grab a 3-1 series lead.

Patrice Brisebois, the only member of the team to have won Montreal's last Stanley Cup in 1993, scored the winner with a blistering slap shot near the end of the second period. It was Brisebois's third postseason point this year, tying him for the team lead with Bryan Smolinski and Tom Kostopoulos.

Rookie Carey Price was outstanding as he earned his first NHL postseason shutout, making several superb saves when tested by the Bruins.

Here's a look at what's being said about Tuesday's game:

• Dave Stubbs: Price brilliant against Boston
• Stubbs: Scars are badges of honour for Kostopoulos
• Pat Hickey: Price puts Bruins on brink
• Hickey: Habs' Price is 'in the zone'
• Hickey: Coach Carbo plays cards close to vest
• The Gazette: Mohawks straddle fence on hockey rivalry
• The Gazette's Max Harrold:Not everyone is on the bandwagon
• The Gazette's Jason Magder: Granny's dream game is day to day
• Canoe.ca: Journal de Montréal coverage en français
• Cyberpresse.ca: La Presse coverage en français
• Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Globe: Zero hour
• Kevin Paul Dupont, Boston Globe: Bury chances, or bury yourselves
• Shinzawa: Grind of the playoffs doesn't suit Kessel's style
• Barbara Matson, Boston Globe: Rookie Price playing, acting like a veteran
• Matt Porter, Boston Globe: Thomas not quite gifted enough
• Steve Conroy, Boston Herald: No goals in sight
• Conroy: Scoring touch eludes frustrated Muzz
• Stephen Harris, Boston Herald: Bruins paying the Price
• Steve Buckley, Boston Herald: These B's giving an 'A' effort
• Buckley: Look of a winner

What's with all the player-haters (not really) from the Gazette article? What kind of hypocrisy is refusing to get excited before we reach the semi-finals? Are we too excited too soon? What if the Habs decided not to give it their best until the semi-finals? The city IS hockey! I didn't grow up playing hockey, OR watching hockey. I've been a fan for less than two years and i'm OBSESSED. GO HABS GO Ex nihilo nihil fit

That game was tense. We played pretty bad and our PP was still brutal. But to still come out with a win makes it more and more obvious that players are buying into the defensive system. Although I still don't agree with sitting Ryder. http://habsbros.blogspot.com/

Bugs's picture
They HAD to move Streit out of there and put him back on O. Ryder's out because of all the O-guys who are underachieving in the series, he's the only UFA of the lot. Simple. I also think Ryder is more dangerous than, say, Dandy for example, but you know Dandy is giving it his all cuz he'll still be on the team next year and wants his ice-time. How does Ryder's motivation AFFECT the Habs, now? Not a lot. Mind you, I'd still want Ryder. But we won, so who cares? Think we'll see Stewart? 13 to 25

Hey guys, THE SCORE Television Network have the rights to broadcast HABS games on their network in ENGLISH, NATIONWIDE, starting as early as NEXT SEASON (HABS' centennial year). The only other issue to take care of is setting up a deal with VIDEOTRON, which would allow THE SCORE to be a part of their cable network, in Montreal. Sign this petition if you want it to happen: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/habs-on-the-score-in-english AND/OR Join this group if you want it to happen: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13452956436&ref=share

That'd be better than CBC, but how does that affect RDS? Also, TheScore doesn't have very good HD. I hope they upgrade before taking on Habs games. RDS is pretty bad too, but not THAT bad. http://habsbros.blogspot.com/

Jay Gold's picture
Other than losing a couple anglophones here and there who understand English better than French, or who do not understand French at all (only watched RDS because they had no other choice), this does not affect RDS at all, as they will broadcast the same way they usually do (every Habs game). The games on The Score would obviously be geared more towards an English fan base in Quebec and across Canada. Let's be honest, the current English Habs coverage between TSN and CBC (who only broadcast games against Boston, Toronto or Ottawa, with some other exceptions, during the regular season) is really nothing special by any means. As far as the HD situation is concerned, they are currently in the process of building a state-of-the-art HD-compatible studio in downtown Toronto. We need as many signatures on the petition as possible: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/habs-on-the-score-in-english

Anyone got an update on Koivu? I hope we see Ryder back with Koivu soon. Without Koivu the other team can focus too much on Plecks. I think the habs can handle the bruins without him though but I hope he is back for round two.

In a case like that, the defenceman needs to take a page out of the Samuel L. Jackson school of hockey, get that stick between the screener's legs, lift as hard as he can, and laugh all the way to the penalty box. Sometimes the two minutes are worth it. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Anybody else notice that the CBC crew seems to love the Bruins. Really - I think they just took the word "Toronto" out of their scripts and replaced it with the word "Boston". They talked on and on about "big Chara" and this player is gritty etc. and made it sound like the Bruins were brave warriors pushing back the evil Canadien horde. I wanted to reach into my tv and slap them. Now THAT's some tv functionality I could use! ________________________________________________________________ - "they crushed us unto oblivion... I noticed the same thing SmartDog, Habs just can't get any restpect from the CBC. I wonder if they noticed at all that Montreal finished 1st in the Eastern Conference. No use wasting our time with the CBC, I signed the petition for The Score to carry Habs games, in my opinion the CBC does not DESERVE to show our Montreal Canadiens, we're too good for them!

True Dog, true. Except for Bob Cole's reluctant yet growing man-crush on Carey Price, much of the analysis comes from the Boston perspective. It's quite annoying. But then again, after years of neglecting the Habs, the announce crew is probably more familiar with the Bruins, so it wouldn't be a surprise to hear them talk them up more than the Canadiens. . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

all their in game comments where about "what the bruins have to do to score.. what the bruins are doing well defensively etc... never a good comment about the HABS...they should be prosecuted.

TommyB's picture
Dog, I noticed it ad-nauseum. The only reason I watched on CBC last night was because I had a friend watching with me, and out of respect for my friend (who also does not speak french) I did not switch to RDS. They'll be cheering for the Flyers next week.

Hey LB - no kidding that the top scorers are drawing a lot of attention and that's helping others. But I think it's true that our rookies are learning this series. They are taking time to adapt and without these veterans, we might be seeing more golf on tv, and not the Canadiens! ________________________________________________________________ - "they crushed us unto oblivion... A while back I put out a call for people to photoshop me a picture of Brisebois hoisting the Cup - as much as I love the Red Baron, I need a new avatar! 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

I'll send you one in June.

Okay folks, I have been right about a few things in these months of posting here. I was right that Ryder would have a tough year on this team, right that Hamrlik would be a GREAT not just a good addition, right that there were too many goaltenders in our crease and predicted that Huet would be shipped at the deadline for little return (why TSN is still so shocked about that amazes me). And now and then Ive been right about what would happen in a match-up. But I totally missed the boat in understanding how important some of these veterans would be to the team heading into the play-offs. I like to say - the numbers don't lie... so I have to face facts. Our 3 leading scorers are: Smolinski, Brisebois, Kostopolous... though I've always liked Kosto... I've been vocal about questioning the other two. I was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!! In Bob we trust! This DOESN'T mean Bob's always right, but it sure does feel good to know he's got the team's back. He seems to. And how about that Carey fella... pretty decent draft pick. Suddenly #5 seems like a steal! ________________________________________________________________ - "they crushed us unto oblivion... All the positive feedback is nice to read this morning so I'll allow myself to grunt a bit. One player I am still hoping to see come out of his shell if Guillaume Latendresse. He's young and learning but there's one aspect that does not require extensive training, espceially during playoffs; using your body when given the opportunity. When I saw TommyK fly into the boards after trying to nail Chara I could not help but think that Muller or Jarvis could have quietly walked over to Guy and whisper "Did you see that Guy ? Do you think you can follow up ? You're 20, full of P&V and we need you to do your share." May be they did but I'm still waiting. I doubt very much that he flew back to Montreal with ice-packs in his hand-carry.

I love how great Price is playing, I can only imagine how great he will be in 5 years. The only thing I am dreading is reading 'The Price is right' or 'insert NHL team name paid the Price' for the thousandth time. But if that is the only thing I am concerned about in 5 years I will be a happy man.

TOEmastro's picture
that makes CENTS, (sorry, I had to)

Bugs's picture
Gotta admit, kevrob, I hate that "Price is right" shtick too. It's so 1972. Ugh. Funny enough, though, I don't mind the "paying the Price" bit. It's good; just not zazzy enough. No worries. I got it. Knew it was it the second I thought it. Plus, it works in french as well as english. How do you feel about reading a 1000 times, "(insert NHL team) crash into Priceberg" ? or, "Priceberg sinks (insert NHL team)" ? or, "Priceberg causes catastrophe in (insert NHL city)" ? 'Course, I'm a bit biased...

How about...Habs are Carey'd to victory

LOL better hurry over to the copyright office on that one. You could rent it out on many occasions in the future.

Heeey! That IS good! Now you gotta think of one just as good in french. Take it away, kevrob. 13 to 25

Hi Kevin, The Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Globe: Zero hour link is dead. Thank you for always giving us all these links after every game! It certainly makes for very interesting reading. ^_^ Dana -- "Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies." - Voltaire on his deathbed in response to a priest asking that he renounce Satan.

I can't thank Dave & co. more for this super coverage and keep up the great work, i'm overwhelmed.

No kidding. This links thing with all of the articles is a fantastic addition to the already spoiled info they gave us all year. Thanks "Habs Insight n Doubt" ...I mean Inside Out ....just kidding. The Gazette has done a lot this year to keep things positive and for the first time in recent memory positivity has won out even in the press in Montreal for the entire season. The Gazette and the guys who run this site have played a big role in that. The players are human and there is no way that all of the negativity of the past has just been extra weight on their shoulders. This site is the only one I have ever found where things don't get out of hand and as an information source it is second to none.

The Boston-Montreal series is proving one more time the genius of Bob Gainey; at the end of the UFA July shopping session, many of us, I included, were somewhat disappointed that we did not reel in the "big one". This morning I look at, in my book, the "big four", other than Carey of course, who are leading\carrying the Habs through this very physical series. Tom K, Roman the Hammer, Smokes and (gulp) monsieur Brisebois. 4 players that were left sitting by the roadside looking for a ride. I hate to think where the Habs would be right now without these 4. Chris Higgins; took 5 or 7 faceoffs last night; learning quickly is he ? Guillaume; time to use those big shoulders of yours kiddo !!!

Chuck's picture
Bob Gainey DID reel in the big one. When he said that he was looking to add an impact player, the guy that he was refering to was Carey Price. The Huet trade was merely to make room for Price to become the Canadiens' #1 goaltender. . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

No the impact player is impacting in Pittsburgh...he was expensive but he is earning his keep thus far averaging 2 points per game despite being a supposed playoff no show. If Hossa had been slightly cheaper he'd be here .......we tried ....absolutely zero doubt about that. Price has been unbelievable though and that is perhaps the biggest understatement of the year thus far.

frobasher's picture
What also impressed me about Higgins was that he was absolutely everywhere on the ice. Always giving the second, third and fourth efforts in every play. The team played a good game last night but we all know they can play better. If they all adopt the same work ethic as Higgins did lastnight. This team will be hard to beat!!

Habs_008's picture
WOW what a win, I'm still fired up about it. I could'nt sleep last night thinking of it. That was a great game. Only one goal scored, but that was playoff hockey. Price is amazing. Every game has been exciting. I hope the habs end it on Thursday. I do not want to go back to boston on Saturday.

Dave and all HIO friends... your opinions please! What would you think on having Roger Doucet sing the NAtional Anthem on the big screen.... much like the Flyers used to do with Kate Smith? I recall their doing it shortly following his death... the crowd went nuts.... and it sent shivers down my spine.

If Mrs. Sousa is at game 5 and we win they should bring her in for every possible elimination game......that would be something......and a heck of a story (hint hint Gazette). Oops...just made it to the article where she won't be there for game 5.....uh oh. They must be Hab fans....they have the flu and they know to stay away.

dicktracy's picture
Yes great idea but i agree to save it for the right time, maybe series tied 2-2 or a seventh game. But time to bring out the trumpet.

I'd love it but only at the right time during the playoffs as the flyers did with Kate Smith. Great idea, cheers.

Habs64's picture
Price is the next superstar goalie in the NHL and will be an All-Star for the next 15 years or more. I predicted a shutout last night and he didn't let me down!!

the real vinnydj's picture
Are you kidding me? I knew Price was gonna be good but come on, this kid is unbelievable. If you aren't convinced yet then you don't know what hockey is. I'm sure if you asked Marco Sturm what he thinks of Carey he could tell you. Sturm scored 30 goals this year and some announcers are saying he is not a goal scorer, give me a friggin break! I hate reading articles about how Montreal's PP is brutal and the top line isn't scoring any goals, can't these people just give Boston some credit because The B's are playing very good hockey right now. Why do we have to say that Montreal is letting their game slip a bit when we can just as easily say that maybe Boston has picked it up a bit. Didn't I say it was a good idea to keep Breezer in yesterday?

the_larry's picture
Just through 4 games, this is already turning out to be one of the most exciting playoff series' in recent memory. In one way, I wish we could watch 7 games with these 2 teams battling, and fighting to the death...then again, 5 games would be great too.

I have to say that I generally agree with writer Harris and his statement: "Is he going to be a truly great playoff goalie? Maybe. Let’s see what happens if and when he faces a team that can score."
