Canadiens in 5 or 6, says Habs legend Lafleur

In his 13 full seasons with the Canadiens, Guy Lafleur did not once walk through a Montreal summer and hear the question, “Why didn’t you make the playoffs?” Because he made the playoffs 13 consecutive years.

“Instead I heard, ‘Why didn’t you win the Stanley Cup?’ ” the Flower said Sunday, laughing.

Lafleur won hockey’s grandest prize five times on his way to the Hall of Fame. He remains the most productive Canadien ever with 1,246 points (518 goals) in 961 regular-season games.

Few fans gave Lafleur’s alma mater much of a chance this spring. But now, as the Canadiens set off this week into the postseason, champions of the NHL's Eastern Conference, one of the club's biggest fans and most outspoken critics is among those whose flu shot has not protected him against playoff fever.

Sunday morning, the Canadiens icon was the guest of honour at the fourth annual Golden Age of Sports Celebrity Breakfast in Montreal, a smiling, hugely popular figure who remains the defining face of the Canadiens' great teams of the 1970s.

It doesn't seem that long ago
We could see that golden mane flow
Streaking down the Forum's ice
Deking out every player alive

When we played hockey on the street
There was just one number to be

Me & my friends would fight over who'd wear #10

We didn't need super powers
'Cuz we had the Flower
You graced us with countless & glorious hours

Three cheers for the Flower
Flower Power

You gave us hope when there was none to be found
You ignited a fire that still burns in this town

And all I can do is sing you my thanks
You made everybody feel like a champ

We didn't need super powers
'Cuz we had the Flower
You graced us with countless & glorious hours

Flower has earned a right to criticize the team whenever he wants. He isn't a bandwagon hopper, he is one of the builders of the wagon!!

Hate Guy Lafleur cause what he said in November?? Poppycock! Lafleur was right, and many fans here agreed that in November the Habs played like crap! So the fans that where putting down the Habs in November are also not allowed back on the bandwagon?? Gimme a break! Lafleur probably motivated the players to do better, all the more power to the Flower!

We were playing like crap when he made that statement. It bothered me when he said it but he was right. Since then the team is playing better AND Lafleur has retracted that statement as pointed out below by ZepFan2 and KilgoreTrout. Enough said, let's focus on Thursday and beyond.

Nothing like jumping back on the bandwagon when things are going great, eh? Where was the support when the team was still finding themselves? More power to the guys in the locker room!!! "Obviously it would be great, but they don't really hang conference titles in this rink. They raise Stanley Cup banners." - Carey Price

Meant to comment on that line by Price the other day. That's memorable. _____________________________________________________________ 1. February 19th, 2008, a day which will live in sublimity.

Then again, he DID say we had a team full of 4th liners... hmmm

Kilgore Trout's picture
Then last November, he made waves when he suggested the struggling Canadiens had four fourth lines. Some players shrugged, others bristled. "I have nothing against guys being upset," Lafleur said. "Maybe it was a wake-up call for some. They've since shown everybody, and me first, that I was wrong, and that's great." Now, Lafleur sees a disciplined team having fun on the ice, fully subscribed to coach Guy Carbonneau's system. No one is trying to win games on their own.

Yes, we were struggling last November. As long as he acknowledges that he was wrong with his 4th line comment, as far as I am concerned he's allowed back on the bandwagon.

The very fact the Guy Lafleur would jump off OUR bandwagon doesn't sit well with me. TRUE fans stay on the wagon no matter how bumpy it may be

I don't know about everyone else but I hate Lafleur. This is the same guy who claimed we had 4 4th lines, now he predicts we'll be in the second round in 5 or 6 games. I don't care if he's a legend or not, he shouldn't be confused as a hockey expert. While the geniuses of our past are building and molding championship teams(see Gainey and Carbo) he's building restaurants. I apologize for those who like 'The flower', but as far as i'm concerned not only is he on the bandwagon, he's driving it.

Making comments like those about Lafleur could get you stoned in Montreal. Perhaps you should change the word 'hate' to 'disappointed' with him. No true Habs fan could ever hate Guy... not after what he has done for the Habs.

Sorry but I had to flag your post as offensive, for all the obvious reasons...bet you look good in blue and white! Go Habs Go

Perhaps it was deemed offensive because he's listed as your favourite player all time?

Lee Hayes's picture
You might be too smart to be a laffs fan! Go Habs Go

That must be one hell of a long list you got there. That is: if everybody who took a shot at this team last fall (heck, even up to and including the trading dead line for that matter) is hated also. Are you for real? GO HABS. And long live the great Guy Lafleur!

LL - easy does it. We all stumble and fall at one point in time on this site and this post was your turn. No true Hab fan can ever hate Guy Lafleur. The Original 24 Cups

I'm pretty sure that saying you hate Guy Lafleur makes you a candidate to be a fan of another team.

Habs fan and Laflueur hater is the world's greatest OXYMORON.

I guess by all "logical" conclusions, I am clearly not a habs fan. I must have my blue and white jerseys signed, framed and appraised. Touch of sarcasm:)

"This is the same guy who claimed we had 4 4th lines, now he predicts we'll be in the second round in 5 or 6 games." He's since commented on his criticism... ""I have nothing against guys being upset," Lafleur said. "Maybe it was a wake-up call for some. They've since shown everybody, and me first, that I was wrong, and that's great." Most likely he said what he said out of frustration. His comments five years ago would suggest that: ""It's frustrating for me, seeing guys making millions of dollars who don't give 100 per cent every night. There's something missing, and I don't like to see that. I was always a proud player and I played for a proud team." Any vet that gave his heart and soul for the Canadiens has EVERY right to criticise. IMO

To be fair, when he said we had four fourth lines, that was in December when we were playing like we had four fourth lines. I like LaFleur's criticism. If anything, unfair criticism will just drive the team to play harder, it's not like they all cried about it and turned turtle on us because M. LaFleur didn't like the way they played.

If the legends believe, then maybe... Just maybe we can to. Or perhaps even Granpa? http://habsbros.blogspot.com/2008/04/bold-and-bountiful.html

Nice song tribute. The lyrics and music have a Dylan style! I, too, remember fighting to be #10 in the road hockey games!!! Great memories...

I wish the Habs had "The Flower" right now when he was in his prime............. The "Chosen One" has come. His name is "CAREY PRICE".
