Confirmed: Koivu has break of bone in foot

posted by Mike Boone at 16h04 EST on Mar 31

Dave Stubbs reports from the Bell Centre that Saku Koivu has a fracture of a "little" bone in his left foot. The captain left the building around 2:30 this afternoon on crutches with his injured foot in a walking brace. He will miss the final three games of the regular season, with evaluation ongoing for his playoff participation.

Sergei Kostitsyn practised today in Koivu's spot on the second line.

Mark Streit and Guillaume Latendresse practised today and are expected to play in Ottawa tomorrow.

Francis Bouillon was examined today and is listed as wait-and-see, though it seems highly unlikely he'll play tomorrow. Mike Komisarek skated with strength and conditioning coordinator Scott Livingston before the team's 4 p.m. practise.

Lines used in practice today: 46-14-27; 84-54-40; 21-74-73; 22-20-6

Ohh Ohh, Kyle Turris is now an NHLer, just signed. Will play the last 3 games.

The Rangers are useless...

Happy_Habs_Fan's picture
At least Pits did not get 2 points. And The sens are closer to not make a playoff spot.

This is the most coverage TSN has gave the Habs all season. They seem downright excited, I mean, concerned, about Saku. GO Habs.

Happy_Habs_Fan's picture
No they just want Montreal to flop at the Dance.

Their already dealing with the leafs demise...again. If the Habs were still playing in June some of these guys would be suicidal. GO HABS.

Happy_Habs_Fan's picture
AGREED..lol...

interesting stat: the Penguins have the worst FO Win% (46.1%) in the league.

Boy these refs sure seem to see the high sticks when Sydney's in the area.

The Teacher's picture
But they also let malkin slash the heck outta Lunqvist. It's playoff time, what are you gonna do. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Glad were not meetin' them in the first round. Good team that will be a lot tougher with all those zebra's protecting the kid. GO HABS.

Shannahan leaves with an upper body injury. GO HABS.

i smell a 3-point game here... grrrr

I was just about to post that..more garbage. I hate it. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

We are done without saku....its over.....

Way to be a believer... maybe move to Toronto

guys.....for all we know we are taking the final 3 games and week to heal his foot more.....I knew he would be out for the season so lets wait and see how t is come next week. Once his foot stops swelling....HE WILL BE BACK. On a side note, having SK74 at center is brilliant....clearly he is a playmaker and grabs just doesnt look NHL ready.....dont be surprised if that second line plays extremely well tomorrow.....but we are FAR from being done!!!!

Time will tell. I'm not giving up on them. Who expected them to win the division and possibly the conference, even with Saku?? ------------------------------------------------------------ My ultimate dream: Captain Saku Koivu skating around the Bell Centre holding the Stanley Cup.

maybe - maybe not. I'll still watch. And I would not rule out him playing. Of course this will be with the new slash proof, steel shell boot they are working on.

The Teacher's picture
Seriosuly, the post with the least basis in reality ever posted on HIO and that's saying a LOT! Ok maybe not the least but definitely top 5! We all know which 2 posters hold the title! "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

If the NYR hang on and beat Pitts, they vault over Ottawa into 5th place. The potential exists for Ottawa to miss the playoffs! ------------------------------------------------------------ My ultimate dream: Captain Saku Koivu skating around the Bell Centre holding the Stanley Cup.

The Teacher's picture
Wow, some of these called not being made would be a 5 and a game for us. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Teach - Don't get me started on that again! By the way, are we the only two guys out here tonight? We should rename this site TeachersInside/Out. Just so you know, I received my pension cheque today. Keep up the good work my fine young friend"-) The Original 24 Cups

I was thinking the same.

The Teacher's picture
Hahaha, don't rub it in with the pension ok!! I've still got a LOOONG way to go. Lundqvist playing great. Teacher's/InsideOut lol It's a very helpful site when you want to pay off your student debts :) keeps you entertained at a very low cost. We can call it Teacher's 24 Cups..soon to be 25. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Teach - Jagr now only needs 17 points by Sunday to have the option year of his contract kick in! The Original 24 Cups

The Teacher's picture
I believe! Poor Habs-Kat. what ever will she do? "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

24 Cups's picture
Teach - Habs-Kat knows her hockey. She can say more about the game in two sentences that most posters can in two pages. Did you see Avery's fight earlier in the game? I'd get run off this site for saying this but he would look great in a Habs' uniform. Seriously. The Original 24 Cups

The Teacher's picture
Oh, I agree with you on Habs-Kat, but he's her favourite player, that's what I meant. No I didn't see the fight, got in after it. But I agree, I'd love him on our team. He is exactly one of the parts we need. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

24 Cups's picture
Teach - The Rangers defensemen have got to clear the front of the net. Great game though. Two in a row for these two teams. Gettin' primed for the playoffs. Gill must be in heaven. And he's signed for next year so he gets two kicks at the can for the Cup. The Original 24 Cups

The Teacher's picture
Ya, he's a lucky son of a gun. I can understand Kaberle not wanting to go to Philly. I mean if you're going to be on a sucky team, it might as well be T.O. right? At least they're famous for something! "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

The Teacher's picture
LOL what a wacky goal in the Pens-rangers game "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

wd40's picture
a Price-like goal... he's had a few wacky ones scored on him.

They are both young first rounders. I must say Fluery looks as good as I have seen him. I guess he needs to be or suffer the same of being a franchise player behind Conklin.

The Teacher's picture
My question is this. If the Penguins go to the Stanley Cup finals. Will the people who blasted the move anointing Price #1 because of the comparison to Fleury as a young guy who was thrust into the spotlight too soon and got wrecked take it alll back? Hmmm.

wd40's picture
Teach, i wasn't one of the ones highly critical of making Price #1 (though i was pretty anxious when Cristobal was traded) but here are my thoughts: 1) Fleury was clearly not ready (i don't know if it was mental or physical, or, more likely a combination of both) and did take 3 years to get back to the NHL after his less-than-spectacular debut in 2003-04 where he played in only 21 game and manged only 4 wins. 2) While the situational comparison/concern was valid, Price is certainly not Fleury.

The Teacher's picture
I'm just saying, people regarded Fleury as a bust pretty early. If he does do very well, can we not say that his early struggles helped him build character? At least when you post, it is reasonable talk, not like some posters who just gripe and moan. I hope Fleury doesn't win a Cup this year because then I'd want Price to be like Fleury ;) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

wd40's picture
re: early struggles helping him build character... i dunno Teach... it's so hard to predict how goaltenders are going to respond to the pressure early in their careers.

Even thought the score is goose eggs, so far tonight the Rangers are too much for the Penguins.

24 Cups's picture
wf - so far tonight the announcers are too much for Mr. 24 Cups. They should stop gabbing and just call the game! The Original 24 Cups

I was just thinking, It might be the best thing for higgins to play 1 game as a center. I think that if he played center for a game, it will allow him to understand and realize that he needs his winger to crash to the net. Thus he will do it when he goes back on the wing

gumper's picture
All we need is one point. Let's hope we get it against the Sens Tuesday, and be done with it.

This sucks big time. We all know what happens when Koivu goes down. Please let him be ready for the playoffs.

I hope all the pundits pick Montreal to exit easily in the first round. They will base it on injuries, playoff inexperience of players and coaches, and young goaltending. Then my second wish is to prove them wrong again! We've got a bagfull of excuses. I hope we don't use them as crutches.

I understand that Carbo wasnt happy with Grabs but still 46-14-27 84-54-40 21-74-73 22-20-6 ?? I am so confused. How does it make sense. Lapierre is not smart enough effensively to play with a talent Russian. Its like kovalev last year on the 4th line. Grabs needs to trust his players. Lattendresse is to slow to play with grabs If using these players only i would rather: A. Kos - Plek - Kovy S. Kos-Grabo -Ryder Tender-Higgins -Lapierre Begin -Smokes -TK

carmine007's picture
Ok, Im going to look at it this way. The Hockey Gods dont want us to win the cup this year because they have a master plan. That plan is for us to win it during our Centennial year! I never could understand why when Lord Stanly's Cup turned 100 years old and WE WON IT! Why the NHL didnt make a CD or VHS tape of that season? They made one for the $%##^! Rangers................. PS The above statement doesnt mean I've given up on this year! AT ALL! It's NEVER over til it's OVER!

habs-13's picture
Now I know that I'm not Carbo, who obviously knows what he's doing alot more than I do, but I think just using Grabovski to replace Koivu and then call up Locke and use him to take Grabovski's old spot would work. And then of course, you bench Smolinski...YAY 46-14-27 84-54-73 21-45-74 22-40-6 45=Locke, for those who don't know Now for my dream lines (after Komi returns so Streit can play forward, not defence, which he isn't all that great at)... 46-14-27 84-11-73 21-54-74 32-22-40 79-8 44-3 51-26

I think you have overlooked something: Smolinski is an NHL hockey player (who often performs well in the playoffs) while Locke plays AHL hockey and Grabovski..it remains to be seen.

The M's picture
agreed, i also beg to differ, i don't thik locke would be the answere for the second or third line. he's bad to average on faceoffs, very small, and not the type of guy you want playing important defensive situtations

24 Cups's picture
wf - Thanks for the sanity. Anyone who has been watching the games will know that Smolinski has been half decent lately. The Original 24 Cups

sidhu's picture
SK74 is 5 for 14 (35.7%) on faceoffs so far. Grabs is 51 for 154 (33.1%) Lapierre is 243 for 494 (49.2%) Smoke is 355 for 694 (51.2%) Chipchura is 139 for 317 (43.8%) Why not have: 46-14-27 21-28-74 84-40-73 22-20-6

habscup25's picture
I HABsolutely like Sergei as the center b/w Higgins & Ryder. That will be a very good line.

Drive_For_25's picture
YESSSSIRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gauvinator's picture
There's no "upside" to Koivu being out. Doesn't mean Grabs or Sergei or whomever won't step up and get this team deep in the playoffs, but the loss of Koivu hurts. On the other hand, it's nearly time for the playoffs and teams with greater injury issues have stepped up and taken the prize. The Habs can do this, with our 1st line and Price alone. Let's hope for Boston in round 1!

ah mon esti? What are these lines??? The lines should be 46-14-27 74-54-73 21-40-84 22-20-6 When will carbo learn that ryder and higgins cant play together and that ryder is GOOD!

Ian Cobb's picture
Higgins cannot play with Ryder, It's like water and oil, can't mix. Ryder can play with Koivu and S.K. just fine. Replace Koivu spot with Grabalski

He's done a good job all season....So iunno if i'd trust ur lines over his.....

The Teacher's picture
damn, call gainey somebody. hurry!

Les-Habitants's picture
A. Kos - Plek - Kovy Tender - Grabo - Lapierre Higgins - S. Kos. - Ryder Begin - Smokes - TK hmm...hope Sergei is good at faceoffs, but he can't be any worse then Grabo. Seems like he'll be leaned on to replace Koivu. Streit practising, and Smokes playing, looks like Dandy is back in the pressbox.

Drive_For_25's picture
That's where Dandy should be. Laps is great on faceoffs, must see something in Sergei at centre that they like. Or maybe Laps just got used to the wing in the last two weeks or so. Not doin too bad there. Grabs gets kicked out of 75% of the faceoffs he takes so maybe that's why they want Laps on the wing with him to jump in and win em.

I guess the 70 playoff games played and the fact that hwa one of our best D in the carolina series has no value. LEt's see, that's 70 more playoff games than Carbo has coached, his playoff total as a coach is zero!

linp's picture
The stats shows that Grabovski wins one loses seven in the faceoff during last game. That is a success rate of 12.5%!!!

I wouldn't say 49.2% is great on faceoffs. ------------------------------------------------------------ My ultimate dream: Captain Saku Koivu skating around the Bell Centre holding the Stanley Cup.

Drive_For_25's picture
Great for our team!

46_14_27's picture
Maybe there's a reason why Jack Todd doesn't blog here. Could it be that he doesn't know the Habs well enough? I just read his article in the Gazette about Roy. Jack seems to think the Habs won four straight in '93 over the Kings. I know, everyone makes a mistake but, this was printed in arguably the greatest hockey city in the world and no one at the paper caught it. 'The Habs defeat the Los Angeles Kings, four games to zero, to win the 1993 Stanley Cup.' Shame!!!!! 46-14-27 Best Line In Hockey !! The Cup in 3 years or less !!

RudeMood19's picture
O'Byrne better not hit anyone, the NHL recently passed a rule against 6'6 people hitting players into the boards. Boy are we in trouble. As for Koivu, this hurts. Two years ago, the Habs were up 2-0 on Carolina and after Sakkers went down, we lost it. Hope he gets back in time. We need Latendresse back, I don't care what you naysayers think. Bouillon should be fine, he's a good little d-man Streit is crucial too, hope he gets back. The boys hafta start playing some good hockey now. Even if they don't win the Conference, let's get a winning streak going heading into the playoffs. Big game tomorrow. _____________________________________________________________ 1. February 19th, 2008, a day which will live in sublimity.

Drive_For_25's picture
Wouldn't suprise me if they did pass a rule like that. I think it's just if the habs have a 6'6 player he will get a penalty everytime. Useless to complain about the refs but these last two games were a disgrace to the game of hockey. It's one thing to take defence completely out of the game and f**k you in your own zone, but when you start calling phantom holding calls in the offensive zone, a.k.a Kovalev holding the stick and Ryder holding after he had the puck and got a shot on net before the call was made in buffalo, you have to start to wonder about the integrity of the league's officials. Either somebodies pockets are getting filled or Carbo is the most ruthless trash talker in the world and they're all out to get him!!

Les-Habitants's picture
Man, bad news... Now our four centers are Plekanec, Grabo, Lapierre and Smokes/Begin. If Koivu can return healthy for the playoffs, then this is a blessing in disguise as he could return refreshed, but we have to hope he'll be able to play early in the 1st round. Losing him takes our team from having 3 solid scoring lines down to two. I like Lapierre for what he brings to the team, but an offensive machine he is not. With Komi out, we can't afford to have Cube out for too long. Tomorrow's game against Ottawa is huge, cause if we win we're guaranteed bascially a top 2 finish and then can really focus on getting the guys healthy. I don't want Ottawa catching up on us and forcing us to finish 5th or 6th, which would mean facing the Rangers or Devils in the 1st round. Streit needs to get back so Breezer can be back in the press-box. For all those people saying we shouldn't re-sign Streit, take a look at our PP last night. Unless Gainey is signing Campbell this off-season, we'll need Streit back...but with Cube out, we'll be seeing more of Breezer for a while. If both Cube and Streit are out, we may just see a re-union of the Dandy-Cube duo....*shudder* Lats back in...which forward is out? Dandy had a pretty decent game, and I'd like to see Begin be given another crack at the 4th line center role...meaning, if I were coach, Smokes gets to sit. A. Kostitsyn - Plek - Kovy Higgins - Grabo - S. Kostitsyn Tender - Lapierre - Ryder TK - Begin - Dandy Markov - Gorges Hammer - Streit Breezer - Cube
