Kovalev DVD to benefit needy kids

Alex Kovalev
has put his heart into a project designed to help youngsters on two fronts. The Canadiens' leading scorer has teamed up with Quebec firm Imavision to produce a video demonstrating the hockey skills and training exercises he uses.

While he hopes that young hockey players will benefit from the two-disc DVD, he's also hoping sales will help youngsters with heart problems.

Kovalev, who leases a Bell Centre loge for the use of sick and underprivileged children, is donating 100 per cent of the profits from the DVD project to charities that promote cardiac care for children.

It's something dear to him from his youth in Togliatti, Russia, having been diagnosed with a heart ailment when he was a boy.

I just bought this today at Future Shop downtown for $12.99 I haven't perused the entire contents of both DVDs but here's my quickie first impression: I only saw the version with the French packaging in the store (are English versions being sold in Quebec?). Thus the packaging is all in French which along with the DVDs includes a Kovy hockey card ("VIP card") with a code on the back of it to access exclusive content on his official website. The second item of note included is a large poster of Kovalev and on the backside of it are pictures and descriptions of the exercises that he demonstrates on the first DVD. The DVD itself includes both French and English versions. The French version (at least for the 1st DVD) simply has French dubbed over what Kovy and his trainer say in English. I haven't verified it yet but I figure the second DVD would do the same. The first DVD contains two sections, on ice exercises and off ice exercises. The videos are short and sweet and sometimes feature multiple viewing angles. The on ice exercises covers skating, shooting and game situations (I forget the fourth item, probably passing). The off ice exercises consist of band exercises (or as I like to call them rubber tubes) with and without a bench and movement exercises. The main feature of the second DVD is the Mr. Kovy documentary. I watched a bit of it, seemed quite interesting. There are some other items on the DVD that I didn't explore yet. I was both surprised and pleased that the off ice exercises he showed used the band/rubber tubes because it's a very cheap exercise accessory (approx. $25) that anybody can buy and use. The only real downside about this DVD is that it does not seem to feature any subtitles (at least for disc 1, didn't check on disc 2). So if you're deaf or hard of hearing...you'll have to read lips while watching exercises. Overall, it's a solid and worthy product. I'll footnote this with a hypothetical question...if Kovy had released this last year during his not so great season, would you have been as eager to purchase the DVD or would you have bought it anyway because it's for charity?

It is a great DVD, a great buy for ny Kovy fans and if you want to learn how hockey is played...

I think there is something else.. Did anyone notice when Plecks was getting roughed up that Kovy was in like a shot, and gave a couple of shots of his own.. He is taking these kids and not only teaching them but protecting them a lot too.. I am 72 years old and I am going to buy the vid. just to see what he does.. I don't think I will be picked up by any team tho, even if I train hard LOL..

I don't know if this thing was selling like hot cakes or if HMV didn't stock enough, By noon today, HMV downtown Montreal was out of stock. To their credit they said they'd be getting more tomorrow. Here's hoping that it's selling like hot cakes.

Kovalev is apparently highly sensitive. I think Carbonneau or maybe it was the media or both had hurt his feelings last year by critizing him and questioning his heart and dedication. Not that I agree with Kovalev, but I believe he somehow felt betrayed by the team he willingly signed with. Us fans should be a little thankful that a player of his caliber chose to sign with the Habs considering that it's so difficult for Gainey to land such a player these days.

i'm not sure that was it at all. in a candid interview (that i really respected him for) which appeared on NHL.com, Kovalev admitted that the problem started, and ended with him: from: http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?articleid=354733&page=NewsPage&service=page After suffering through the worst season of his hockey life, Alex Kovalev took a look in the mirror and decided he hated what he saw. Things, he knew, had to change. “It’s like, you hate everything about your apartment, you want to redo it because every time you go back home, you’re sick of it,” the Montreal Canadiens winger told NHL.com. “So you throw everything outside and buy new furniture. That’s kind of what I did. I threw out the old Alex Kovalev and kind of brought in a different person and play a different game.” boy did he ever. _______________________ make your opinion count @ http://hiopolls.blogspot.com

KOVY 06-07 vs KOVY 07-08 with the benefit of hindsight which we all now have, we can reflect clearly on last year as an adjustment season, a transition season, more so than this year by a country mile. The coaching and the players were in a constant state of flux...Carbs new system, lack of communication, problem child Samsonov, Sourays uncertainty, very few rookies able to crack the lineup..etc... so no wonder Kovalev, a season'd veteran who had been in rock solid organizations (pens/Rangers) felt compelled to speak, or put his foot in his mouth as is usually the end result of a 'player' speaking with a voice of dissent. That is never a benefit to a team short term. So not wanting to work that extra and voicing negative criticisms really framed a bad picture for Kovalev last year. BUT...that didn't change the fact that he had talent, the gift, the golden crown. THAT IS THE BIG DIFFERENCE. ...DIMINISHING TALENT vs DIMINISHING WORK ETHIC..one can be fixed, the other clearly signals the end of a career. we saw in KOVY last year only a DIMINISHING WORK ETHIC...it was restored, and now we see the result. so not to criticize POSTERS here for bashing KOVY last year... just remember that to every problem in sports there are usually 2 variables: MENTAL PHYSICAL both can be 'repaired'...just that one is more easily done (with a GAINEY at the helm) then the other. here are some examples league wide: EMERY = MENTAL - Can be repaired BREEZE = PHYSICAL - Cannot be repaired COLIACOVO = PHYSICAL - Cannot be repaired PRONGER = MENTAL - Cannot be repaired SAMSONOV = MENTAL - Can be repaired etc. --------- 1. LOL, this post was funny! Innovative Breezer bash (will there be an award the the most innovative Breezer bash of the year?) True also. That was the issue with Kovy last year. I don't think anyone ever questioned his physical abilities. We were incensed over his poor work ethic. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
DAMN..you discovered it!....at this stage you have to get creative to bash the Breeze! --------- 1. WE ARE DEAD MEAT WITHOUT OUR OWN POLICING 1. Feb 19, 2008 - History was made. 2. Emery is mental, no doubt about that one.

The Teacher's picture
LOL, Don't give up your day job on the basis of this diagnosis ;) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

It shows a lot of character to donate 100% of the profits to charity. I certainly underestimated Kovalev as far as heart is concerned(no pun intended) whether it's on or off the ice. I'm impressed by his philanthropy and love for the game. I don't believe he's the same player as in past years -even one year ago. Something's different about him. He's changed for the better in many ways.

from a Hockey Perspective...this is the greatest DVD created since the movie THE ROCKET. --------- 1. WE ARE DEAD MEAT WITHOUT OUR OWN POLICING 1. Feb 19, 2008 - History was made. 2. Hab-Professor, just curious.. what do you mean by: "WE ARE DEAD MEAT WITHOUT OUR OWN POLICING"? _______________________ make your opinion count @ http://hiopolls.blogspot.com

LOL, I don't know why, but your question was hilarious! "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

That footnote is directly aimed at our only weakness towards winning the Stanley Cup during the playoff run. That is our TALENT GETTING MANHANDLED by some GOONS and the REF's put the whistles away. Thats playoff Hockey and it may be really frustrating to watch, beware. IT may not happen every round, but it will happen. Anaheim/ Rangers/ Senators all deploy the facewashing, spearing, suckerpunch behind the scene tactics that are mandatory to win the Stanley Cup. and they will use those tactics to throw our talent off their game. Sure Kovy is big and can handle the hits, but do we need or want him chasing guys to give back an elbow? when he should be setting up koivu or kosty's with a razzle dazzle play.... --------- 1. Ever since the Ivanans fiasco I've been pretty much antigoon. I haven't had time to look at what the rates of penalization are in the post-season compared to the regular season, but I've been under the impression for years now that the role of goons becomes far less important in post season play. Why would we saddle our lineup with someone with cement hands? Haven't we dispelled the myth that the Habs are small / weak yet? I like the fact that Kovy handles himself, the others should watch him and learn from his fine example. We are NOT a small team. We are NOT a weak team. And I think the enforcer is heading the way of the dodo- and good riddance.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
I really hope your right... yeah IVANANS was a big failure...but he is still "playing". and by 'goon'... i really mean 'grit'..not just a cement head as that has gone the way of the dodo as you said....and yes we've shown moments of 'grit', but playoffs are 7 games of GRIT. --------- 1. Soooo. In essence? if we don't buy the DVD and watch it, we're not true Hab fans? ;) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

So glad someone else gets to decide that for me. ;)

exactly! I'm going to try and fit it on my list... soon I'll only need to post my signature and become a broken record :) --------- 1. WE ARE DEAD MEAT WITHOUT OUR OWN POLICING 1. Please don't try and fit it on your list. There aren't enough posts on a page as it is since they changed the format. :) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

I am going to buying this for sure!!! Full props for Kovy, taking the time to put this all together and donate everything to kids. Class act!

the_larry's picture
I agree! I think everyone on here, and all Habs fans and Kovalev fans should buy this DVD. Not only for the entertainment factor, but for the cause. Of all of Kovalev's great deaks and dangles, this move is by far one of his best!

Everyone remember that great piece that was run here in the summer when Kovy flew his own plane to northern Quebec to meet with the mayor ( a fan) and then proceeded to run the mayors harley into a building? Funny harley hijinks aside, even after his lacklustre last season, he was in the province, in the summer, on his own time, visiting fans. That "incident" illustrated this mans character and things like making a DVD and giving all the proceeds to charity just continue to amaze me. What a solid guy. Thanks Alex for everything you have brought to this team on and off the ice. For all your charity work and for taking all the young kids on the team under your wing. We wouldn't be where we are this year without your dedication and commitment. Go habs go! Velavok

The Teacher's picture
We also wouldn't have been OUT of the playoffs last year if he brought his dedication and commitment. BTW he went to meet his BIGGEST fan (not to meet the mayor lol) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

Can't we just let go of last season?

Just wondering, what is it you teach?

von's picture
"We also wouldn't have been OUT of the playoffs last year if he brought his dedication and commitement." I think you mean if Halak had started the last game of the year... But certainly, he had a... uhm, "unproductive" season. But full credit to Kovy for putting his head down, and coming to play this year like he wanted to be the best in the league! Having such a terrible season re-opened his eyes and got that fire burning again. P.S. I'm pretty sure Kovy's super fan, is in fact the mayor of the town he visited...

The Teacher's picture
Halak? He started a playoff clinching game against the NYR and lost. We had our opportunities last year, we didn't cash on them. although I agree he probably would have gotten us the win in the last game. Yes, I'm glad he decided to bring it this year also. P.S. I'm pretty sure you're wrong. His biggest fan is a woman who has every jersey he wore. ;) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

von's picture
Ok, we're both kind of wrong, haha. "Radio-Canada is reporting that Canadiens forward Alex Kovalev was involved in a motorcycle accident in the Gaspesie during the weekend. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured and will be at training camp next month. Kovalev was driving the Harley-Davidson belonging to the mayor of Grande Riviere, Romuald Boutin, on Saturday when he lost control of the bike and spun out. Kovalev flew his personal plane to the area to visit Jocelle Gauvrier, a member of his fan club who has an extensive collection of Kovalev jerseys. " http://www.radio-canada.ca/sports/hockey/2007/08/21/003-KovalevMoto.shtm...

Fair enough ;) As long as we both want the Habs to win..right? RIGHT!!! HAHA "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

Way to go Alex. I believe he has had the corporate box for underpriveleged children for awhile now, but the dvd is new. Somehow, it is Kovalev's on-ice contribution that magnifies what he does off the ice. Take any of the press box gang...you may here about some great charitable act they are involved in, and many of them are involved, in one way or another. You walk away thinking he must be a great guy to do something like that. But when it is a player who makes the on-ice contribution that Kovalev makes, one feels a sense of gratitude even more because there is the contribution on and off the ice. It is very endearing.

Oh yeah, and although my previous comment could be interpreted as negative, it is not, I think Kovy is having a great year and I respect the fact he is giving 100% effort every night. The fact that he is giving the profit from his video to sick underprivileged children is very admirable, another reason to cheer for AK27 every time he touches the puck! Cheers The Big_Daddy

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Are the youngsters having a great year because Kovalev is "showing them the way" or is Kovalev having a great year because the youngsters are forcing him to pick up his game a notch. Don't get me wrong, I love the Kovelevinator, but I wonder with all the attention that he is getting this year did anyone think to give the kids some credit for put the "super" back in superstar Alex Kovalev? The big_daddy

Vid's picture
Kovy did seem a bit annoyed with the praise that our younger players were getting the last few years saying their egos had gotten a bit big. That might have bothered him enough to factor into his below average play last season. I think Kovalev's amazing play this year really has nothing to do with anybody else but himself. I'm sure that talk with Gainey and the improved play of Plekanec and the addition of Kostitsyn helped but it was Kovalev who reviewed all his old tapes and worked hard trying to figure out what made him successful in the past. He was the one who made a conscious decision to start fresh and come in with a positive attitude. I think Kovalev would've done good no matter who his linemates were this season. Heck didn't he even score last season while he had been demoted to the 4th line (albeit very temporarily)? Kovalev always had the talent, I don't think playing with the younger guys somehow unleashed it to another level. It was always there, he just needed to be in the right state of mind to use it fully and consistently. Although I seem to be the only one who believes it, I never thought he and Souray got along well.

Corporate's picture
I always thought that he was a great guy. He's done a lot for kids over the years. But would everyone be as happy if he was having a crappy year like last year... I know I sound negative but it is true. This story would have probably been a small article in the back of the sport pages...

Shiloh's picture
In a way, it doesn't matter what we think of Alex. The point is that whether he is having a great year or a not-so-great year he has been there for those kids.

Corporate's picture
Very very true... But there are many canadiens that do amazing charity work outside of the rink... Koivu, Breezer, Kovy... I just find that in a day and age where everyone thinks athletes are just there for the money and to have big egos, we have to underline the great work that they do. Many players have foundations and charity fund raisers for sick children and the medical sector. This proves that not all players are egotistical, money hungry guys..

The Teacher's picture
I think we all know that not ALL players are egotistical and money hungry. We also have to remember that a lot of the charity events attended by players are part of their contract. I'm not begrudging them, but IMO they could do more. Just like everybody else. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Halak Price! Do you?"

Will I be able to purchase the video in an actual store or is it only available online?
