The Gazette's Pat Hickey was at Canadiens practice at the Bell Centre on Wednesday morning and provides this update.
Goaltender Carey Price, recently recalled from Hamilton, will get the start against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.
Christopher Higgins is being dropped to the fourth line, along with Maxim Lapierre and Mathieu Dandenault.
The first line remains the same: Alex Kovalev, Andrei Kostitsyn and Tomas Plekanec, while the second line will be Sergei Kostitsyn, Saku Koivu, Guillaume Latendresse. The third line will be composed of Tom Kostopoulos, Bryan Smolinski and Steve Bégin.
Defenceman Ryan O'Byrne practised with team for first time since breaking his thumb on Dec. 27, but he's not ready to return to the lineup yet.
I love this move by the management.
Halak will never get better. Trade him somewhere as a good back-up. Price may very well be the future of the Montreal Canadiens, all he needs is time and hopefully he will get more. Huet is a great goaltender but he needs a rest right now and it's a perfect time to give Carey a work out.
Even though I am not part of the team, I am guarantying a big win tonight. If it doesn't happen I will lock myself in my apartment until the next Leafs/ Habs game. I hate the Leafs, go to grammar school, it's the LEAVES not leafs.
great to see carey price back.he's gunna shine tonight.trade ryder allready.he's becoming an un needed distraction.
As a LOOOONG standing fan of Les boys,And supersttious one it vexes me to read about how we'll just take the 2 points from the Leafs, and of course with all the hacks reminding us that Price has NOT lost to the Leafs.
As bad as they have been of late and were really spanked on Saturday night
They always can rise to the occasion against the Habs.Les boys will have to play hard and for the full 60 min.
GO HABS
Your absolutely right JACK. Any team in this league can beat any other if one of them take off a period. Or tries to float. These guys are pros.in this league, if you think you can take a shift at less than 100% your going to find yourself behind and playing catchup.!
cournoyer, who is this fellow Tee you are always talking about? I know a Jimmy Tee, but he's too old to play in the NHL. Years ago, when Canada first played the Russians, and the games were basically on the radio, this old guy said there is one player on the Russians who is really good. He said he is all over the ice. His name wasn't Kozlov, Kharlamov, or Tikanov; it was faceoff. Groan.
The only reason I wish Getzlaf was on our team is so that we would actually be talking about a player on the Habs. But I digress.
A fella like him would take to long to buy into the total package and ruin the chemistry. That is why Bob won't be bringing in here any ringers, we are developing our own. Getzlaf and many others are very gifted skilled players. But there diminour does not fit this TEAM concept. We only draft and develop people that mentally can adjust to our philosophy.
Halak and Ryder are probably not going anywhere. Even with only 6 weeks left in the season, Ryder's lack of production makes him too expensive. Do you really see Florida giving up Jokinen for Halak and Ryder? You'd have to be buts and there haven't been that many nuts acting as GMs since that Courtnall for Kordic trade.
The goalie market has gone south. We can sign Huet for the same money or less unless he takes the Habs to the finals.
Dream all you want, but I don't see any moves for a top player. Other teams don't just give these guys away. There are always teams in the market, looking to improve their cap situation or the team, but I don't see any Lecavaliers or Crosbys available. Problems are traded away for the other team's problems.
Bottom line? Be happy with what the Habs have right now, because they are not going to improve with a trade. Unless there is a nutty GM out there who wants to have his pocket picked. :)
Gilbert
If Ryder is not going anywhere, then why is he in the press box every game now?
Bang on G-MAN, were sticking with what we got.
bang g man, get it?? Sorry now that i read it , its not that funny!!
No it's not, but it made me laugh nevertheless. :)
I totally agree. If Gainey makes any trades they will be minor and involve someone like Dandenault or Ryder. In order to trade for a high profile player they'd have to lose one or two of the young, promising players. What's the point of trading guys like Higgins? Montréal has a bright future. Why throw that away to take one big swing at it this year? Why not see what these guys can do in the playoffs?
3 posts and you called me "habsidot", "mustardman", "liar", loser, and "armour hotdog" LOL, whatever that is....Thats pretty witty!!
Higgins is the guy who a month ago YOU had pegged as being the next captain !!!!!......LOLOLOL...now you want to trade him...how fickel...
You forgot the size issue ;)
Dropping Higgins down to that fourth line means he probably won't see much of Kaberle all night. Also, balancing out the scoring threat against such a weak D should all but nullify the home ice advantage of last line change. Antropov will still be out too, so we really just have to worry about Sundin wanting to show off to the scouts. But if Ryder can't make the line-up after Lapierre barely showed up against Ottawa... that just speaks volumes about where he flies on the Habs' radar right now.
As for Koivu's problems this year, I think we should cut him some slack as long as the team is doing well. Higgins has failed to connect on at least 10 (if not 20) fabulous scoring chances this year and no other winger has been able to finish for Saku consistently all season. When the captain feels he has to do more than usual to make up for his line mates, bad things usually happen, such as bone-headed offensive-zone penalties. That's why most of his points are coming on the PP I think. But really, Koivu is not the problem. Come on.
I thought I read somewhere were it said that Antropov would be playing tomorrow but I might be wrong.
He still has one more game to sit out on his three-game suspension by my count. They announced the suspension on Feb. 1 and TO has only played two games since then:

Even more on the plus side, McCabe should be back in the line-up. He usually can be counted on to pot at least one goal for the Habs when we play against him.
geez it was my poker night and I must have missed seeing the habs slip into last place over all...sure seems that with all the trade talk ..
I realize it my sound negative but I assure you I'm definately not being negative. I think we are doing awesome compared to last year and I think we can do some damage this year but we won't go far with only one scoring line. We need to get to the next level because lets be realistic, if Heatly and Alfredsson were playing last night then we most likely would not have one, agreed? We have to have two good scoring lines and I can't see the player to go on the Koivu line as being a player from this team.
I hope that is sarcasm. Remember that Fresh Prince episode where the family sees the tape of Jeffrey cheating in the olympics? They call him the 'shame of a nation (England).' Well Nickelback is one of ours.
If we were able to obtain a Jokinen type player for the first line and a Shea Weber type player on defence then I think other teams would have a hard time stopping us from winning the cup.
Komi and Weber on D. I like the sound of that. Who knows, maybe O'Byrne will turn out that way. I hope Carbo sits brisbois and lets O'Byrne take place on D.
They don't have to be them players, but players like them. I was just making a point to how close and how far away we are to winning the cup!
Can we all agree that Hossa is not worth Higgins or even Ryder. Hossa has never ever played well in playoffs. He is completely none physical and he makes way too much imho. He is really an equivalent of spezza. "Dynamic" and talented in the beginning of the season and when surrounded by likes of Alfredson and Neil. When left to fend for themselves, both Hossa and Spezza are not any better than Ryder, just way more expensive.
Habs need more grit, physical presence combined with scoring abilities.
Hossa and Spezza are not any better than Ryder?!?!?
I agree 100%. See my post below. IMO, B.G. is much too smart to move a roster player of Higgin's calibre in that type of deal. Hossa is an overpaid prima donna. As a GM in the new NHL you have to be able to manage your assets. Higgins provides excellent value for money. Hossa wouldn't. End of story.
I don't think Hossa is the type of player that we need for the Koivu line. The Koivu line would still be to small if Higgins gets taken off it. The only way it might work is if Latendresse stays on the Koivu line and Higgins and S. Kostitsyn gets put on the third line but I'm just guessing.
Hossa has 35 points in 55 playoff games. Not up to his high scoring standard, but nothing wrong with that at all. Saying "Hossa has never ever played well in playoffs", isn't being entirely truthful, or at least ill-informed.

A pace of just over half a point a game in the playoffs is hard to get excited about. IMO, it doesn't come close to justifying the coin he is getting paid. And besides, it's what's he's done lately that really counts and drives his value. One point, -6 and a meagre 10 shots on goals in Atlanta's early exit from the playoffs last year.
