• AUDIO: Tomas Plekanec | Brian Gionta | Jaroslav Spacek

• At a Glance: A super Sunday but, alas, only for the Bruins, with a goaltender other than the Canadiens' Jaroslav Halak stealing the show. Riding a 10-game winless streak, one more loss from tying a franchise record for futility, Boston scored twice in the first period then held on for a 3-0 victory over the Habs at the Bell Centre. Adam McQuaid scored the first goal of his career to open the scoring at 17:32, that coming on a heavy-traffic slapper, then Marco Sturm beat Halak with less than four seconds on the clock, a deflected puck landing on Sturm's stick with Halak moving the other way. The second period was all Montreal's, the Habs outshooting their visitors 15-3, but Boston goalie Tuukka Rask, who made 36 saves to Halak's 24, was equal to them all. Sturm salted the game away midway through the third, his snap shot deflecting off defenceman Josh Gorges's stick past Halak.

• Key Moments: Sturm's goal in the last gasp of the first period. And Rask, who was dominant throughout, twice robbing Tomas Plekanec in the second, first with a glove grab, then later on a breakaway with a terrific right-pad stop.

• What It Means: With a win, Montreal could have pulled three points ahead of Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference standings. Even with the loss, however, the Habs remain in sixth place, their 62 points one ahead of the Lightning but with Tampa holding three games in hand.

• What's Next: The Canadiens return to action at home on Wednesday vs. the Washington Capitals of Alexander Ovechkin, who scored a hat trick and assisted Sunday in the Caps' 5-4 overtime win over Pittsburgh – Washington's 14th (!) straight win. Montreal then plays back-to-back Friday and Saturday against the Flyers, opening in Philadelphia then at the Bell Centre to send themselves into the Olympic break.

Damn, my first game at the Bell Centre and the habs don't even score. Guess that means I have a reason to make the 9 hour drive again.

 TSN just reported that:

"The San Jose Sharks bolstered their defence by acquiring Niclas Wallin in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

San Jose also acquired a fifth-round pick in 2010 and sent a 2010 second-rounder -- that previously belonged to Buffalo -- to the Hurricanes to complete the deal."

I hope the Silent Bob is not so silent this year during the trade deadline. We need to be the sellers.

Other News : Kari Lehtonen and Elias return from their injuries.

WindsorHab-10's picture

Not too upset about this loss. We stole one Thursday in Boston and we knew the Bruins were bound to end this streak even though they scored 3 lucky goals in my opinion. The loss of Cammy, Kostitsyn and Pouliot eventually catches up.

Even though we outshot Boston, the key thing missing from Saturday's game is that we made life easy for Rask as we did not have traffic in front of him.

The Cat's picture

I agree.

Habscat's picture

Bit of a stinker today, but oh well. This team needs a shakeup and I will stick to my guns and say that we need to be letting teams know that we would move a veteran D-Man at the deadline. The goaltending was fine toda, no chance on any of the goals. However, Id go with Price next game

should be a tough one with the caps in town, though Ovechkin doesn't have the luck against the habs

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

Haha, he did score the "goal of the year" against us last year.

SeriousFan09's picture

Actually, I'm pretty sure Ovechin is at least a PPG during his Montreal visits. With his current scoring pace since he took on the C of Washington, I really wish we weren't facing them until post-OLympics when we had a few fresh bodies.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

Brown_Hab_Fan's picture

doesn't have luck? lol you don't remember the 4 goals he from the shalacking we took by washington?

daveho29's picture

I took the colts and had to give 3 1/2 points, but happy for the city of New Orleans. They needed that boost of morale.

Both teams are depleted, but I hate getting blown out by the B's at home.Especially when I get pumped to watch the game.Especially when I watch the games with B's fans... BG must go!!

Drive_For_25's picture

Bruins weren't depleted...they just suck.  It was really 2-1 Habs if u think about it.

gohabsgo25's picture

it was meant to happen. the bruin's didn't want to get sweeped by the habs and also didnt want there losing streak to continue. we will end a streak and that wud be the caps.

go habs go

smiler2729's picture

For those who know better... ya win one, ya lose one.... nobody's getting traded, nobody's gettin' fired.

YA SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HABWARRIOR's picture

Sure Cammi's loss hurts......

Sure little boy body MAB and POO-POO Pouliots absence hurts...

..But Damnit we need THE BIG AK46!!!NOWWW!!!

HABWARRIOR's picture

When is the big AK46 returning???We need that BiG MOFO!!!NOWW!!!

ThirtyThree's picture

Damn - a win would have been great. But, alas.

The Habs didn't play that bad. If Rask wasn't great, they could have tied it up in the second. Let's hope Big Ben's back soon.

One thing's for sure. Ovechkin and his playmates better watch out. The Habs are gonna come out hungry on Wednesday!

ovi  and co. will cream habs wed. habs were lucky against pens who were more interested in today's game with caps. caps in league of their own compared to habs.

congrats to saints!!!! there must have been some heavenly intervention!

Harani's picture

Saints!!!! Ya man!

"I gotta a feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night!"

Fargo Habs Fan's picture

As a Vikings fan.  I would have found it much much easier to stomach had the Colts cleaned house with the Saints tonight.  Oh, what might have been.  That said, I am happy the Saints are in a great position to win.  It's nice to see some fresh blood win the Super Bowl.  That philosophy, however, does NOT apply to the Stanley Cup.  What are the odds Carey and Adrian Peterson can work together this summer on their carrying skills?

I hear ya! Also a Vikings fan, but its hard not to feel good about the Saints finally winning the big game...

I'm hoping the Bulldogs...er...I mean Habs...can pull off a miracle Wednesday.

XXIV...and counting

saints just went up by 14 (interception) 3 minutes left. WHO DAT?

Not dem Colts!

Very poor effort this afternoon. Team too inconsistent...coaching is a problem.

Clearly a BIGGER team will beat a SMALLER team 8 timesa out of 10.

We must be a seller and move tiny tots and slow pokes out.

I would keep for next year....Cammalleri, A. Kost, S. Kost, Maxwell, Moen, Metro, Plekanec, Pouliot ,White, MAB, Gorges, Hamrlik, Markov and O`byrne.

Possibly keep Darche and Laps.

Definately try to move D`Àgostini, Desharnais, Gionta, Gomez, Trotter, Gill, Mara and Spacek.

Make every effort to trade and draft for larger players.

Brown_Hab_Fan's picture

LOL and that's why you some blog commentor and not in Bob Gainey's position....I know Gomez sucks but I don't think Gionta would have came without him...Gio is my a replacement for Kovalev that I'll take anyday...Gomez....we'll see hope and keep our fingers cross that he pull something out till Cammi and and AK46 come back...how you giving up on this team when this is their 1st real season to get to know each other? YOU FOOL

You want to get bigger, but keep MAB,Maxwell (who's awful btw),Gorges, and Metro, but get rid of Gill,Mara and Spacek?

keepthefaith's picture

Gionta is one of our best players. Plays way bigger than he is.  You cant just give up on all your prospects . Trotter and Desharnais  cant be judged on two games.

CanadienBoy's picture

Take you,re pick desharnais gomez gionta only one because 3 is way too small for the stanly cup

Nothing wrong with having a smurf or two,but not more than that, especially when you have no tough guys to protect them

ooder's picture

gionta... the guy is a freaking warrior, who cares about his size.

he goes to the front of the net and fights in the dirty areas.

he is a non french st-louis

CanadienBoy's picture

Good choice, martin on rds The new kids add  to play bigger players? Hello bring Boucher up asap...sing plak..5years 22.5 no then trade him with a golie don't care witch one  and get that big center to play on the first

slapshot777's picture

If that post doesn't sound like the ramblings of a mad man then I don't know what does. Boucher is okay where he is to. Why bother to sign Pleks if you are going to then trade him. Then just trade any goalie, you don't care which one? You make all this sound so easy.

I can see why people thing being a GM is easy, this guy has it all figured out.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

CanadienBoy's picture

if pleks  sign you keep him if not you trade him before the trade dead line just like kovalchuk, goalies they both good, one he's a head now and older but they not going for the cup so price got time as well we can not keep both cap wise $$$

ooder's picture

i dunno, i think we should keep pleks.

he is a warrior and never takes a shift off (even last season he always worked hard).

he is our number 1 pk man and is very good in both ends of the ice. and he is a habs product.

I think the "big center" thing is overrated. It's not the center that has to be big, but at least one winger.

When the lines were clicking (for like 2 games before injuries struck again) we had Pouliot for Gomez and Gionta,

and AK46 for Pleks and Cammy

ooder's picture

Mara is as good as gone... as is D'agostini.

MAB is also going to leave, count on it.

I would keep gionta because even though he is small he is still very strong and a smart player.

Desharnais and trotter will be in the ahl so i dunno what the problem is with that.

Spacek... just play him on the right side and he will be fine.

Keep Gill... people have tunnel vision with this guy. he is a great PK man, and isn't as bad 5 -5 as people make him seem

Change can start with management first....a new direction is needed. Canadiens have been treading water for too long.

Start with Gainey. His would have a low rating in every significant managerial category that exists. Trades, Free agent signings (or lack there of), and drafting. For me his biggest blunder was the handling of Cary Price.

Habsone's picture

I love my team!  We need a change!!!!!!  Go Habs Go!!!

briuns were due for a win.

HabFanSince72's picture

I don't think we were outplayed.

We're missing AK46, Pouliot, Cammi, and MAB - 4 of the  players on our team who can  put it in the net with any sort of regularity.

yes,true, but the B's shut us out,with a 10 game losing streak,,on our home ice,with 2 of their top 5 d-men out,and their #2 ctr out. At least you're not blaming the refs....this time. I say our top 3,MAB is a scrub

HABZ24's picture

a huge upset win vs pitt to a massive letdown vs boston. the rookie 4th line was a good gimmick the fist game but can they contribute every game they play. carey underwood looked hott but needs bigger upper frontals.lol

That she does!!!!!!

HNIC on CBC heard that the Habs are not going to trade any of their goalies. Just have to wait and see in a month's time. Who will BG trade at the deadline? Any thoughts?

Dean Dalley's picture
In 90% of Halak's losses he never gives a post game interview....

Danno's picture

Why the heck should he? If he told the truth it would cause a stir and the press would eat him up.

BKAK72's picture

Two .500 teams playing up to standard.  HABS are held scoreless and the BRUINS score two fluke and a back-braker from a group of guys who let off in the final 10 seconds.  Really shouldn't be all that shocking.

For those fans who remain satisfied or see potential w. this team please pass the juice you are drinking.

I for one grew up watching that HABS compete for CUPS and winning divisions in the 80s.  These guys look like beggars, picking and choosing when to show up.

A team will never win w.out a bonafide #1 CTR.  We're (likely) stuck w. GOMEZ so it's time to unload PLEKS and there's no point keeping our two goalies unless you adopt a 50/50 split in games.

If we lose both PLEKS and the two goalies for nothing or drafts picks (which is possible) at the end of the season then you may as well stop watching this garbage while BOB & CO. have any say in the matter.

-- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --

keepthefaith's picture

ooooh , you grew up in the great decade of the 80's......WOW.  How do you expect we get get this number one centre?  Its not playstation 3 here bub, cant just make up trades off the top of your head. Or do you have some inside info that we dont that says Gainey and his staff do nothing all day and never try to make trades or to make the team better?

BKAK72's picture

BTW...while the 80s was a decade dominated by the ISLES and OILERS (8 cups b/n them) the HABS managed 2 CUP appearances ('86 win and '89) and 4 WALES CONF. appearances ('85, '86 win, '87 and '89 win).  That's the last period of any 'greatness' w. this organization.

-- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --

BKAK72's picture

When you measure BOB & CO.'s ability to manage a roster - it's borderline inept.  I'm unsure which is worse, his mismanagement of our best UFAs over the years e.g. Ryder, Sourray, Koivu and KOVY or trading assets w/out comparable compensation in return e.g. Ribeiro, Theodore.  Just how many CTRs have the HABS drafted in the last 10 years?  5 in 2009, 1 in 2008, 1 in 2007, 2 in 2006, 1 in 2005 and 1 in 2004.  3 in 2003, 2 in 2002, 2 in 2001 and 2 in 2000.  How many are on the roster today FT:  Lapierre and you can toss in Maxwell and White if that makes you feel better.  Summary:  can't attract quality CTR via UFA, can't trade for one and can't draft one...that spells disaster, welcome to HABS 2009/10.

-- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --

HabFanSince72's picture

How is it possible that we lose both goalies?

BKAK72's picture

Both goalies are RFA.  Nothing is stopping HALAK from going to the KHL for the $$$ or an NHL GM offering a massive contract to PRICE (or HALAK for that matter) with compensation being draft picks.

-- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --

pher pher's picture

Well that was disappointing.  :(

Les Habitants's picture

that all you can expect from a 500. team.

marshx's picture

Rask played great, so did Halak for that matter and no reason he shouldn't play vs. Washington. Les jeunes seemed a little less energetic today but I guess thats understandable, overall the entire team looked a little flat. Yes some nice chances but very sloppy passing for the most part = tons of giveaways. Bottomline we were getting chances, but Rask was hardly being bothered, more bodies in front!!! We miss you Pouliot!!

pmaraw's picture

well, looks like i can wash my jersey now

lavie's picture

Both teams ended the streak. We are not Washington. No complaints!

Brown_Hab_Fan's picture

that's ok....I'll take this loss....no need to panic...no luck...boston got the luck they needed....after losing 10 in a row or whatever...everybody always bounces back against montreal....no problemo...see you guys next game GO HABS GO

Looks like we need a pp goal; to get us back in this. If a pp is what we need JM must motivate these guys to force Bostom to take a penalty.

Brown_Hab_Fan's picture

wait till AK 46 comes back...cammi should be back hopefully soon after the olympics...and I'm not going to pray...but I'm announcing that we will upset the captials

slapshot777's picture

Better second period, just no results, the kids today are invisible. We just can't seem to get much sustained pressure in the Boston end and can't seem to get no one in front. Hopefully we get a goal early in the 3rd.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

Does anyone know if there is a rationale behind not putting SK74 on the power play?

chilli's picture
Uummm, maybe it has something to do with the fact that he has 2 goals this year - yes, one more than Laraque - and that he gives up the puck 75% of the time he touches it.

Le Jadester's picture

Is the 75 % of the time you are referring to mean Plekanic's stick ?  The mechanic should have had a trick tonight with all of SK's feeds. SK rarely causes turnovers.  For 817 000 $ I think we are getting more bang for our buck considering what others on the team are getting paid for and producing.

I was thinking the same thing when watching the Wash-Pitt game today.  I'd rather see SK on the point like Ovie is for the caps (and no i am not saying SK is as good as Ovie).  Positioning-wise with his passing abilities and good shot it would kinda make way more sense over Spacek.  Plus SK can get back faster.  Probably to outside of the box thinking for JM.  But I do think Carbs tried it back in '08.  Wondering how Darche earned that time, let alone the 4th line yesterday which was kinda cool.

Either way, SK and AK for that matter need another year or two before they become NHL seasoned like Plekanic and then we will just lose them for nothing like Streit etc.

Habs, OLE !

He played the point for the London Knights in Junior.

G-Man's picture

Junior is a huge step away from the NHL. SK definitely should not be on the point for PP time when there's Markov, Hamrlik, and Spacek available.

A. Berke's picture

My question is: Is there any rationale behind anything else that JM does?

As Bugs would say: respectfully yours.

Ali B.

Timo's picture

I was going to answer but it looks like a trick question, Ali.

You must be Junior...

pmaraw's picture

for all the stickhandling skills pleks has, I really wish he'd use some of them on breakaways, or shootouts...  throw a freakin deke in!  if you can burn defencemen with dekes, you can certainly burn a goalie.

kinda reminds me of Vince Carter and the three point shot  (VERY SORRY!!!)

Two CBC games without having to listen to big mouth Cherry . What a treat.GO HABS GO .

pmaraw's picture

its only 1 period...  and the kid line didnt impress me anymore than pleks/gomez lines...

and whats with every AHL callup getting their 1st nhl goal vs the habs?

deuce6's picture

Geez, take it easy in here..Why the doom and gloom? We were down 2 to these chumps just the other night and came back and stoled 2 points...Still a lot of hockey to play in this one..

PITTS two consecutive Cup appearances with a win and CAPS a stones throw from getting there while BOB & Co. shove this overpaid roster garbage onto the fans pretending to be LES GLORIEUX. -- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --

Timo's picture

I am beginning to think that Bobo is getting kickbacks from signing overpaid garbage players like gomez, gionta, gill, et co. That is THE only logical explanation.
