NO AUDIO: Battery failure

• At a Glance: Martin Brodeur has stymied the Canadiens throughout his career, but he was matched save-for-save on Saturday night by Jaroslav Halak. In the end, the game would go to overtime and Zach Parise gave the Devils a 2-1 win with a breakaway goal moments after the Canadiens came close to scoring the winning goal. Parise beat Halak with a great move after being forgotten as he went to the bench to get a new stick after breaking his in the defensive zone. Travis Zajac scored for the Devils only 4:07 into the first period after a nice pass from Parise. Zajac slipped the puck through Halak's five-hole. Scott Gomez scored against his former team after he gathered a loose puck in Brodeur's crease and slid it into an empty net. The Canadiens were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Devils were blanked in four opportunities. Montreal outshot New Jersey 30-28

• Key Moments: Both goaltenders made great saves on lateral movements to rob a play of what appeared to be a certain goal.

• What It Means: Montreal's record dropped to 22-21-4 and move up to 48 points with a point for the overtime/shootout loss.

• What's Next: The Canadiens have four days off until the welcome the Dallas Stars to the Bell Centre on Thursday. Next Saturday, the Ottawa Senators are in town and the Canadiens plant a rare Sunday night game in New York against the Rangers.

I'm I being too picky or did Gomez not screw up by not moving back to cover for Markov? The way I saw it, Gomez moved across to the right and towards the Devils blueline instead of taking a deffensive role and move back towards his end. Had he stay back when he saw Markov move in, he would have been able to cut off Parise before he got control of the puck. It's hockey sence like that that separates the flashy player from the good player. Gomez is all flash. Time that he starts using his skills to bear down and be responsible.Hab4life

a few thoughts on the team so far:

Goalies

  • They are NOT the problem, only problem BG has here is.  "Which one do I keep, which one do I trade?"

Defence

  • Gill = Huge Liability, Price knows this also.  Considering we thought he came here to protect Price & Halak.  Instead he has caused his share of goals.
  • Depth = GOOD - thus why we have not seen PK Subban, and will not see him till next year likely.  Which is a good thing IMO.  Means he will be better sooner at a NHL level.

Offence

  • This is the area with most cause for concern, they simply do not have depth.  When a TOP6 goes down with an injury, the Habs simply can not recoup. Happened with Gionta out, and now AK46.
  • Lapierre is not the same as last year, he is suffering from what Plekanec was suffering last year.  Wonder if he will say he's been playing like a girl this year?
  • D'Agostini is SIMPLY not the answer, MAY be a good 2nd liner in about 3-4 years.  But not now, not since his concussion.

Trade ???

I seriously believe still that Gainey (after stealing Pouliot for a Guimauve) is back on the TOP6 Forward hunt.  At it appears, despite Gill's sucktitude, that the bigger issues is one NHL level TOP6 forward, so that when AK46 returns we will have proper depth to compete.  Otherwise this team is destined to finish 9th & get a crappy draft pick.

HUDSONHAB's picture

A few thoughts on your thoughts.

You are right about the scoring. Need to trade Pac , Dags , White or Pyatt in a package to get a good scoring forward from a lottery team. Our defenceman are all capable and are also very prone to give aways and poor decisions and positioning.

Guys I trust---Markov, Cammy, Plekky, Gionta and Metro.

Hang on ... down to the wire for #8.

GOOD EFFORT BY THE HABS, MORE CHOICE BY MARKOV  TO GET CAUGHT UP ICE ON THE WINNING GOAL, HOWEVER, THAT HAPPENS AND IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN THE WINNING GOAL BY THE  HABS.  STILL THINK THAT THE HABS PROBLEMS IS IN THEIR OWN END WHERE THEY HAVE GREAT DIFFICULTY IN GETTING THE PUCK OUT.   I  WOULD LIKE FOR SOME ONE NAME A NHL DEFENCEMAN  WORSE THAN GILL IN TRYING TO CLEAR THE PUCK,  PLUS GETS KNOCKED OF THE PUCK SO EASILY  , WITH HIS SIZE  IT SHOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE.  HERE HE IS WITH -6 RATING AND PK SUBBAN  LEADING THE AHL WITH A +22 .   I KNOW SUBBAN HAS TO DEVELOP BUT I THINK HE COULD BE MORE VALUEABLE THAN GILL BY A LONG SHOT.

the problem with the habs is not the goaltending. It is the defence(not including markov and hamerlik), especially gill. 5 giveaways yesterday.

Bill J's picture

re: Gill

Not to mention the 2 goals scored against Price that where a direct result of Gill in Price's last loss.

How Gill gets an "A" blows my mind MUCH more then Gomez's salary :(

HUDSONHAB's picture

If Gil could play 5 on 3 only he'd be great. lol.

how gill ever became an NHler blows my mind (at over 2 million dollars per year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Disgusting.

All in all, a very well played game and a fantastic effort by the Habs.....and a point against one of the leagues best. Shows that we can compete with the leagues best, which was something that was in a bit of doubt.   3 out of 4 points so far on the homestand and now in 7th place.

Nice that we finally got a point from NJ.  If not for Brodeur we win this one by 2 or 3. Another encouraging game from the Habs...too bad AK is out for 6 weeks.

tricolore's picture

Wonder what will come at the March trade deadline? Wonder what will come this summer? This season will be no better than last in terms of results (if that....could be worst). Gainey will certainly leave this summer. Of course we need to be patient with the likes of Pacioretty and Dagositini...have they made progress this year? Lapierre? What on earth happened? Is he missing his buddy GL that much? Wasn't playing better with him here earlier in the season anyway.

Lafleur, coming out rather gingerly on the right side.

2003: Mtl select AK 46..9 picks later N.J selects Parise. That's why we're a mediocre team every year (except 07-08) and N.J is a contender every year. This team would sure look different with Kopitar and Parise drafted, instead of the big money we've spent for decent but small top 6 players

kakey's picture

So 7 years ago while looking at all the prospects at the NHL entry draft, you basically knew that Parise, another 5'11" smallish forward, will turn out to be a bonafide sure bet keeper. Now please tell me who, from this year's draft, will be a 40 goal hardworking scorer? Here's the list:

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=596011

Sorry jakey,I don't get paid big money to follow these youngsters and make those choices. if we had more capable people doing it,we wouldn't be mired in mediocrity. Do you agree or disagree with that?. Personally I wish they would trade him and his brother while they're on one of their hot streaks, because you know a 20-40 game slump will be coming

Of course you don't get paid, all you do is yap your pathetic mouth off about all things hindsight. I could just imagine how much you would have cried had we picked parise who was ranked in the mid-20's with our 10th over all pick. Instead of a player who was ranked in the top 5. You would have cried even more then you do know, which is pretty tough to do. As for sergei, how many 7th rounders even crack an nhl lineup? Its guys like you who want to get rid of players then cry when they flourish into their full potential somewhere else. You dumbasses never learn.

Leafstv "telling their fans they deserve to win for over 40 years"

kakey's picture

I agree with that, but Montreal is not a good place for young prospects to develop, way too many expectation and distraction (not pressure) from media. Teams like Montreal and Toronto, which have similar markets, can draft all the Parise and Getzlaf of the world and they won't have the luxury to make mistakes and develop into mature NHL calibre players.

Also, judging from your opinion of the Kost brothers, if you're any of the 29 other NHL teams, why would you want them?

Bugs's picture

Not to mention the OTHER teams who didn't pick Parise either, THEY'RE mediocre too, right?

That's how that works, I see.

It's laughable each and every time when "A" draft player from yesterday is compared to "what we could have taken". When Gainey's, or any manager for that matter, crystal ball is up to snuff, Sylvia from the Montel Williams show will be out of a job. I would love to read the comments from back in the days of the drafting of Parise et al and compare them to the lunacy I read here, lol.

it's an old, tired argument about who we could have gotten instead of the older Kostityin. We should have traded him while he was scoring, before he goes into another 40 game slump. Our management is inept compared to N.J's and many others

Yup,sure are contenders every year those devils, they did win a cup back in the early 2000's but have never been past the 2nd round since. They put up a good regualer season and choke in playoffs. So in reality your praising a team that hasn't been any better then us. Way to make yourself look stupid, again. But thanks for coming out and at least trying to pretend you know anything.

Leafstv "telling their fans they deserve to win for over 40 years"

If they're no better than us ,why is everyone so happy with a loss at home against them, lol. And when was our last cup? And how many have the Devils won since then. grow up.

It was a hard fought loss but i can guarantee you nobody is happy about losing. Even if we had won you would find something to bitch and cry about, its your nature.Maybe your wife/girlfriend/blowup doll wears the pants at home, who knows. But you are one whinny baby,so grow up yourself.

Great game to watch & a fantastic effort by the Habs. What a duel by Brodeur/Halak. We deserved the 2 points but the one we got was just as good. Loved the hustle by our team & I hope we can continue to play like that. No negatives in my book.

We are the Leafs.

i dunno if some of you caught the weird goal situation in toronto tonight... this what wilson had to say about it:

Even though the Leafs were made aware that the sequence was called correctly under the NHL's casebook, coach Ron Wilson believes the ruling is based on "flawed logic."

"I understand you can't have two goals on one play, but why not?" said Wilson. "Why can't you?"

that' sfreakin hilarious

Does Ron Wilson understand why he won't have a job next year?

Yes Jan 9th, he looks stunning with his stirling silver hair do

Once again, I wonder how folks on here can be bitching and complaining so much.  People on here were saying that this game will be a true test since NJ is one of the leagues top teams.  Well, we outshot them and outplayed them for most of the game and took a point by taking it to OT.  We played well.  We have taken 3 of 4 point so far on the home stand....yet people still do nothing but complain.

Can some of you guys not find ANYTHING to be happy about ?

ManApart's picture

You have a point. We did not look outclassed by the Devils. It's just in the end , good teams find a way to win games like that, and we didn't win, which just solidifies in most of our minds what we thought was true, that we are not really a good team.

pher pher's picture

So we're a bad team because we lost? If had won, we'd be a good team? Might as well pack-up our bags and call it a season, eh?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but Parise broke his stick, got a new one and boom, the game was over. That's quite a way to dig deep and "find a win". In reality, it was sure luck.  Boone even said, "They lost on an overtime fluke goal."  Both teams played well.  Maybe you should try being a little more... I don't know, optimistic.

The Cat's picture

Yeah I agree, that was just pure bullshit luck, last night was a true 1-1 draw, lots of positive from the game.

Timo's picture

I am happy that it was really warm today in Calgary. Does that count?

ManApart's picture

I'm not too sure about Gionta anymore. I mean he's ok, but I think you could find a much better 5 million dollar top 6 guy out there.

See what he's worth in 3,4,5, yrs. Ouch

Well you have to admit Lou was honest with Gionta when he told him to take the money being offered in Montreal.

Nice little player, but not $5 million a year nice.

Anybody watching Calgary-Van game? Lots of hits... great stuff. I forgot that this existed in hockey.

Why can't the bottom 6 forwards ever do anything to lighten the load on the other guys? It's very tough when half your guys never do a damn thing.

Timo's picture

That is a very good point. It wouldn't hurt if our 3rd and 4th lines chipped in once in a while.

Someone should tell them that they are allowed to score.

RiverviewCanadien's picture

So who is the scapgoat tonight?

Isn't it obvious - Price!

RiverviewCanadien's picture

I was going to blame BGL....Price...he had nothing to do with this one, the Habs missed the "Champ" tonight, the REAL difference maker...

SmartDog's picture

I still don't understand why the goalies on this team can't also learn to put pucks in the other teams net.  They do everything else.  If Halak could have only scored one, he would have won the game 2-1.  Bring in Price, maybe he can score goals for us and not just stop the puck!

Timo's picture

So Plekanec has been pretty invisible in the past few games. You can say that it's Andrei that he is missing, but isn't the player that wants to get a big new contract (some people were throwing Gomez like numbers here) should be making others around him produce, rather than depend on the availability of this or that player? Or could it be that he was playing to be on the Olympic team? Either way, he's been pretty much nothing to cheer about laterly.

Cammi is the same. Everybody who's played Mtl more than once knows what he is going to do - pass, pass, slap from the knees. Brodeur was stoping it with such ease as if he was reading a book. Gionta same thing - slap shots left and right from anywhere without a care... jsut slaps it. Whooptee doo... you can slapshot dude, you are awesome. I can count on my fingers number of times Habs were bothering Brodeur. He could see most of the shots, he could easily deflect them to his open defensemen and in general, he didn't had as hard a night as many say he did. Sure, he made some good saves, but here is a newsflash, goalies are expected to do that. Otherwise, Laraque could play goal.

Speaking of Laraque - was he injured or a healthy scratch today? I think on RDS they said that he was botherd by something so I wonder if it is playing 5 minutes last game that nearly killed him. It was almost double his regular ice time so no wonder.

linp's picture

I want to say the same thing about Gionta. He has been making many low percentage shots. We should have Pouliot going to the crease to block the view of the goalie. He is not going to score when the goalie has a clear view of his shots. As for Cammi, he was just unlucky. His one-timers hasn't found the hole yet. D'Agostini is just useless on that line. AK would go to the net or pass and shoot. Too bad he is injuried.

Timo's picture

Dags is useless on any line. Zero hockey sense.

habaholic68NJ's picture

I believe BGL has an upper body injury (again).  Sounds like his back (again).

Timo's picture

5 minutes of "skating" will do that to you

Harani's picture

Sorry about tonight guys! Really thought they were going to pull it off but nevertheless, extremely happy with  the performance of the Habs tonight.

  • First off, the game wasn't the snoozefest I expected when going to watch it. Many of you make it sound like was really boring, compared to other Devils games, this one was much more exciting, believe me.
  • Although I think that Marty F. was holding his own, we needed to do better on the PP opportunities. 25th in the league on the PP at home but 1st overall. Very weird stat. There was a lack of patience and ever since MAB became a forward, it's like he forgot how to shoot. He tries to make the perfect pass and pretty plays. Just shoot the damn puck! And on the PP, I don't think Pleky-Cammi-Metro up front is working, there is no screen. JM should maybe try Moen who is good at redirecting pucks or even MaxPac. Pouliot does it well for the second wave. PP needs to be better at home!
  • D'Agostini is completely hopeless. I swear Ryan White was better. For all I know, Price could have played right wing on that line. D'gs needs to be packaged or AHL. He's had too many chances and made too many bonehead plays.
  • On the other hand, MaxPac fits in REALLY well with Metro and Moen. That line should NEVER be split up. A true energy line.
  • Andrei K is being so sorely missed I feel sad for Pleky and Cammi. They create chances and are trying their best out there but it just isn't working. Here's hoping they can get it together.
  • I don't care how much Gomez is paid, he was awesome tonight and has been for a few weeks. Solid and smooth as silk in the neutral zone. His transition game is top notch and shows you why he is such a good playmaker.
  • Hammr and Spatch were an awesome pairing tonight. The occasional mishaps but overall, hteir transition game was very effective.
  • Gorges was caught lost many times when he was pinching and wandered around. I continue to believe that he is NOT the right partner for Markov.
  • Gill hit Zach Parise!!!! If he can lay a few hits on other teams star players, it would be much appreciated.
  • Halak was really good tonight. Kept us in it in the third. Despite letting that questionable one in, he remained concentrated and made some key stops. However, he did need give out a generous amount of rebounds and was shaky at time but the D cleared everything.
  • After such a convincing performances against one of the top teams in the league, the Habs do derve the two days off to rest up and heal any small bobos. come back fresh and restart this stretch and bear down till Olympic break. Bring on the Stars!

linp's picture

I made the same comments on MAB. He doesn't want to shoot anymore on the PP. Our PP is built for his and Cammi's  one-timer.  He should set himself up to fire his shot. Instead, he is happy just passing the puck around.

I got my cell phone ready to call the ambulance if I suffered a heart attack, and man do I came close to about as many just watching this game...

I think this is the best game I've seen on TV, and Halak is sure to be ready as "Number One", despite that weak goal on the first (what ya gonna do?)...

I think this game is of equals, closely on shots, penalties, etc.  In the end, Parise got lucky on that overtime goal, and Brodeur yet again got the upper hand with those saves that could've beat for Habs players.

At least the Habs got a point, even though it's not enough to be placed definitely anywhere on the playoff standing, but a well-deserved for the effort and heart.

I mean, jeez, they're against the FREAKIN' DEVILS, people.... come on!

I, for one (and to many who feel the same) am pleased for the team, and they should have a good rest at the start of their four days off...

deuce6's picture

If it weren't for Brodeur's heroics in the 1st period, we would have won handedly...He made some pretty great saves out there, tonight..Gomez was electrifying, as was Halak...

Mo had a good scrap..Don't know why Fraser got his panties all up in a bunch..It was a clean hit..

PP looked out of sink..We couldn't get set up on a consistent basis...Terrible pinch by Markov in OT, but that is a make or break play...Left Parise wide open...

PK is solid..

Can we please get some scoring and help out our goal tending, please? lol

Is Poni from TOR available? Cheap 25 goal scorer to flank Cammy/Plex...
