Bergeron OK; doesn't look good for Mara

From in front of the Canadiens' hotel in Raleigh, N.C., Pat Hickey checks in:

Defenceman Marc-André Bergeron might not practice this afternoon, but he says hs's fine beyond a stiff neck. Seems he suffered from whiplash when he plowed into the goalpost while scoring the winning goal in the Habs' 4-2 overtime victory against Atlanta last night.

Bergeron said the mishap was scary, but that he didn't lose feeling after the collision, though he did feel warm. He added that the medical staff's thorough examination in the dressing room scared him more than the crash itself.

Paul Mara took a hard shot off the left hand or wrist last night and missed the third period. No official word yet, but it's possible the defenceman will miss some time, maybe a lot of time.

Just heard on team 990 that Pouliot is practising with Gomez and SK. If he could go the crease and creates traffics, he could be successful.

dang....that means no gionta.....any word on his fitness or expected return? the Leafs on boxing day?

SeriousFan09's picture

Gionta's had a setback and was told by team doctors he needed to take 4 days off from skating, he's flown back to Montreal along with Mara.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

Both Markov and Mara have been role players who have done their jobs.  It seems the only criticism against them has been when someone expects more that they can give.  There are other young d-men to step into Mara's role.  At least temporarily.

Bergeron has a bit more of a unique role as the PP point shot.

Thank you Santa for returning Markov.

The only criticism I have against Markov is that he got injured. Wake up, Andrei, and stop being so god damn injured.

Timo the "terrible"

Considering all the defensemen we have both in the NHL and AHL, I think we can manage without Mara.  Good opportunity to get Belle or Carle some more ice time, and keep bergie on 4th line and PP duty.

If Mara is out, why not give Carle another shot. Looked decent last time up?

I thought Carle looked real steady when he was up.

Also is Bergeron Likely to play with whiplash?

Mitch.sc's picture

I think we can pretty much assume that mara broke something. Also why did they not whistle the play when he went down after we regained puck posession? is it because he got back up?

N.B.habs fan's picture

They only blow the whistle when hit in the head or face.

HugeHabsFan's picture

I think he got back up because they weren't blowing the whistle.  We were questioning it was well.  The poor guy was obviously seriously hurt and yet the play continued forever, or so it seemed!

........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Either way I think he was great for roughing it. He just said "ouch, but I have a job to do"
