• Summary: The Canadiens fell behind 2-0 in the first period thanks/blame to their indiscipline. Georges Laraque was serving six minutes – four for the high-sticking and drawing the blood of Detroit's Darren Helm, and another two for tripping Niklas Kronwall (a knee-on-knee hit, by the looks of it) to send the Wings defenceman to the dressing room for the night – when Brad Stuart made it 1-0.
Then with Paul Mara off for cross-checking, giving Detroit a 5-on-3 with Laraque still off, Datsyuk put the Wings up 2-0. Habs' Travis Moen and Ryan O'Byrne promptly went off in rapid succession for roughing and slashing, giving the Wings another lengthy 5-on-3 that Montreal ultimately killed. First-period shots were a revealing 16-3 for the visitors. The Canadiens outshot Detroit 8-7 in a penalty- and heartbeat-free second period.
Cammalleri's two goals in the third followed to make things interesting.
• What It Means: The shootout win/loss ended the Canadiens' modest two-game winning streak and dropped their season record to 11-11-1. An overtime or shootout win would have given the Habs a share of the NHL record nine straight wins in extra time. Monday should provide more news on the health of Scott Gomez, who missed Saturday's game with what reportedly is a groin injury that lists him as day-to-day.
• What's Next: The Canadiens are home to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, in Pittsburgh on Thursday and back home next Saturday to Alex Ovechkin's Washington Capitals.
actually the habs are in pittsburgh on wednesday
3 of 4 points from strong teams on back to back nights AND missing numerous key guys. Couldn't have been much better ( well 1 point better, but...really)
I like it...and the fact that we have soooo much more heart and desire than last year. Instead of folding in adversity, we still give 110% and the guys play for each other.
I agree 100%...:)
DD...
I am so sick of getting the wrong end with these refs! Every game we get the short end.
We must be the most penalized teams in the NHL. What does the NHL refs have against us? Do we deserve more penalties every night?
Number 25 in 2010
The Habs lead the league with 120 PIM, but are right in the middle of the pack for penalty minutes per game at 16th overall due to the fact that they've played 2 more games than most teams.
http://smilinggainey.wordpress.com
An even more interesting stat would be Carolina's. They've been top 3 in fewest PIM since the lockout, but this year they're one of the worst.
And despite the fact that Montreal has 2 more games than most other teams, they're 2nd to last in power play opportunities.
http://smilinggainey.wordpress.com
Dude, the Refs where not the reason Montreal lost last night!
The calls on GL were valid.
two 5 - 3s... of course the penalties killed us dude...
That's a lot of 1s in the current season record!
In my opinion, what we witnessed over the last two nights, both despite and because of the lack of three of Gainey's summer signings, is exactly what Gainey was hoping to construct. A team that plays with pride, that shows a great will fueled by dedicated character, and a team that plays for each other. They rally around each other, they compensate for their teammate's weaknesses and most importantly, they don't give up.
Last year's squad would have folded under these circumstances. No Markov, missing two of it's four best forwards, playing with about six or seven AHL'ers, playing two games in two nights against top tier teams, having to play from behind in both games...
Gainey knew that from a pure skill stand point he wasn't drastically improving the team. He knew he was improving it in the area that he saw as it's greatest weakness last year. He was trying to rebuild a healthy team atmosphere. The 3 points we earned this weekend are the fruits of his summer work.
I hope some people will think of this when they are crunching numbers the next time. It ain't just the stats, folks.
AMEN !!!
You're right, stats are just part of it. Look at BGL. He plays with the team and they win? Why? He didn't really play tough. His dirty stick and trip cost the Habs two goals, and the refs declined to call a payback stick in the third. But they got 3 of a possible 4 points.
The only guys who know what a team "needs" are the coaching staff and GM. I continue to be amazed at how bad some of last season's players look in comparison to the new bunch.
Really proud of the way team played last night with one exception. They deserved the point. Pricey, Pleks, Cammy, SK47,Hammer and OB played with enthusiasm. BGL looked about as good as a Fried Tofu sandwich. They always say you are what you eat! BGL, the only way and I mean the only way you will earn respect from me is if you drop the gloves with Lucic and win. You have lost a lot of respect for that crap you did last night!Shame on you!
For the love of pete, it's Andrei Kostitsyn - AK46
And if you've never had a fried tofu sandwich, don't knock it. Plenty of real men eat tofu. It's just unfortunate that Laraque isn't one of them.
I was so energized from the game that I had a very vivid dream about being at a Habs game.
Also really impressed by Pyatt and White may be a keeper. If all we do this season is develop players like Pleks, Pyatt, White and (do I dare dream) Gui!, we have an awesome future.
Random Question: You know allthe art they auction off at the Bell Centre? Is there anywhere to purchase it other than there and/or for less insane prices?
RQ2: Anyone else going to be at the Centennial game in a couple of weeks? I just got my tix in the mail and they're beautiful.
-- Thank You Saku.
Can't answer your questions but I agree about Pyatt and White - at least LAST NIGHT they both look liked they contributed to a strong 2-periods that reclaimed 1 point. I have to admit that to me the only two players on the ice last night that seemed questionable were Laps (who I like) and Mara (who I can't stop myself from noticing makes bone-headed plays all the time). Anyway, Pyatt and White, if they keep playing like this are gonna cause a lot of hurt to some other guys who might fall behind them in the pecking order.
--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!
Since the pleks Andre and Cammy line finally clicked would you guys keep this line together? Who would you place on the first line with a healthy Gomez and Gionta when they come back?
BEFORE last nights game I said this was THE line, and was bemoaning Martin's odd arrangement. I sure as heck still think so.
I'd try Moen and Maxpac or Pyatt with Giomez. None is an obvious first-line player, but we don't have any of those. What all 3 have is strong, hungry, high-tempo physical play. If I were Martin, I'd try MaxPac first for a few games and see if it started to gel at all.

patches or moen
I like the Moen-Lats-Laps line. LaLa need Moen on the same line so if they falter Moen can crack them one to get them back into playing the "system".
Pacioretty
Went to see the high powered Flyers play in Phoenix tonite and it is reassuring to see that other teams also take a night off.
Carter, Richards, Briere etal were invisible, Pronger continually yapped at the officials and couldn't hit the net and actually was a liability on the PP. Hartnell goal-sucked and eventually got lucky.
Philly was very lucky that Phoenix couldn't finish or the score would have been much worse.
Philly fans were their normal selves.
"LaLa et La" is only a social experiment - There is no other excuse"
For the next 3 Games:
Good news for the Habs, Colombus Blue Jackets plas on Monday before the Tuesday game gainst Montreal so the team gets a chance to catch the Jackets a bit tired from a road game the night before.
Of course then Montreal's on a road game the next day in Pittsburgh, although they're still missing Mckee, Goglioski, Letang and Tyler Kennedy. Orpik was back in the line-up for their Atlanta game, but the Pens are down some defencemen they could really use so that's a bit of a break for Montreal.
Washington rounds the week out on Saturday and I doubt their injury situation will improve when we see them next, so expect a general re-match of Friday's affair I'd say.
Fearless prediction for the week: Barring the return of Matt D'Agostini or Scott Gomez to the lineup as they're closest to getting back for the forwards, Ben Maxwell or Sergei Kostitsyn may be pulling on the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge for these games as I suspect BGL has played himself off the roster.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
Went to Bulldogs game tonite . SK74 by far best player out there from either team. Great playmaking skills , also scored and threw some solid hits. Great play and shot by Subban for o.t winner. Carle , Weber, Desharnais, and Trotter also looked good. Some big time hits from Stewart , Conboy ,Henry and Belle . mulvena72
Wicked friggin avatar dude.
First comment on HI/O! I was at this game as well... agree that SK74 was flying, as was Ryan Russell - the guy's pretty darn fast. Some nice crushing hits in this game too.
Good to hear because SK took Friday night (when I was at the game) off. that night the most intensity came from Nielson.
Should qualify this by saying that, on Friday, SK got rocked a couple of times, which probably didn't help his game.
It is almost comical watching Habs trying to compete with Detroit. So they managed to squeeze a point, but man, do the team ever belong in two different leagues. Detroit in the NHL, Habs... well... perhaps they could be competitive back in 1910, although I doubt it. Maybe a midget level?
Whatever... it is dillusional to think that Habs can even compete with teams like Detroit. I watch the way the control the puck, the way they pass - it's a pleasure to watch. Crisp, precises passes, fast zone break out, very few turnover, relentless forecheck and pressure on the puck carrier. There is nobody on detroit that is ever stationary... legs are always moving. Habs on the other hand... well, we have Gui! and Laraque... and MAB. Enough said.
Go back to Russia, Timo.

Timo, I used to enioy reading your posts & even considered you a smart hockey observer. Reading your posts thus far, I'm convinced that you are as dumb as they come. Extremely negative & critical of this team. Even though you are free to express your opinions any which way you like, you are way off and completely unfair evaluating our Habs with all the key injuries we've had all year, none bigger than Andrei Markov.
So keep on doing what you do best, which is blow hot air. This is a good team and when healthy, I like their chances against any team. Go Habs Go & Timo sucks.
Great post Timo, one of the only realistic Hab fans on this site of clearly delusional people!
I really think some of these guys are self-medicating and using adjectives like 'pretty', 'beautiful',
'superb' confirms mine and your opinion, keep it up!
Waaah, waaah, waaaah.....quit the crying!

Awwwwwwwwww cute! Jeff found a soulmate. After Komisarek broke your heart you look to Timo for comforting... awww
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
Hey Marchand, I just heard that the Laffs are going to sign Markov for 6 years, $6 mil, does Molson sell enough of that 'bleu' to make a qualifying offer?
It's all about the $$$$ mon ami!

Really? I didnt know that life let alone Hockey was all about cash.. Thanks for that brilliant post, now back to under that rock until your next win.

wow.... you're trolling.......
Wow Mike, you've become one of the premiere posters for creating a shitstorm of responses. Well done. ;)
Seriously, we just have to play a round together next year. I can hardly wait to hear your comments after your first inevitable wicked slice into the the trees. LOL
I always look forward to the timo "the terrible" rant. Keep it up!!!
Hard to complain, although you still find ways (albeit getting pretty weak), when the roster is so depleated and they manage to hang in the race. Check the standings, I think I would be complaining more if we were a
"top team" with only a handfull more points that the Habs have. Also, check the individual performance points, hard to complain about BG's off season moves, after doing so. Are the Pits fans starting to dis Crosby? Changing of the guard in the NHL this year and Pleks and Cammy are right in the thick of it. Better not get rid of AK yet - he may just rise like Pheonix from the ashes.
you still complain about things?
Ali G would be ashamed by your general view on life.
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
The day this site gets the ignore feature will be the day it's the greatest fan site ever!
Is your life so wretched that you have to come here to grieve? What on earth is wrong with you?
All you do is bitch and complain. I have soldiers like you, and they are not fun to be around.
Timo how old are you? I'm guessing you're pretty young, so having said that there's still time for you to change your ways. Pretty soon this site will have the features to lock you out and then no one will care, but I'm guessing you're used to that.
Grow up young man, life's too short.
They call me Shane
At 2am mind you! lol
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
Just more proof that some people shouldn't drink and surf the net.
They call me Shane
seriously Timout.....the boys played a hell of a hockey game tonight and clawed their way back into a game that Laraque alsmost single handedly lost for them in the first. I dare say that if Gionta, Gomez and Markov were all heathy the wings wouldn't have stood a chance.......man....are you this negative in every day life?.....would put you on my "dont visit" or my "dont call if you need a fouth for golf" lists.
I get that your a "realist" and you definitely have a right to criticize the team, but you need to "realize" that this is a FAN site. We all come here because we love the Habs, and I can't speak for everyone else, but I have ZERO interest in reading the same crap from you over and over. If you think the team stinks, fine, but unless you have some insightful comments that we haven't already read 145 times today then please KEEP THEM TO YOURSELF.
We are FANS of this team and the constant negativity on this board will cost HIO readership, if it isn't already.
A suggestion to HIO staff: give us a way to "block" certain posters. I find this very useful on other messageboards.
really Timo??? great support, put you name in become a coach, do a better job or just go to Toronto. They win- negative comments- they lose, drop them to the ECHL, you call yourself a fan how about some support besides your morning after coaching solutions
Your comments to Timo are out of line and it appears to be a bold statement that you will not tolerate any negativity toward our team.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion whether they constantly harp and complain about our Habs on a daily basis and to block certain posters serves what purpose to you?
Why should Timo and others keep their opinions to themselves?
Hockey is like politics, there's not a day that goes by where we complain about our Government (Federal, Provincial, or Municipal) about what needs to be done.
Democracy, ain't it beautiful?
Timo has not critiized any HIO member verbally on this site but it appears you are doing more harm than good on this site with your comments.
"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"
Look for every one of you that welcomes his constant complaining there are 20 of us that are sick of it. If he was pointing out something new or a suggested line change, fine, by all means let's talk about what we think the specific problems are. But it's this constant baseless "our team sucks" stuff that got old last year.
I dunno I guess maybe I should just stay away from the comments section of this site. I just wish it would be what it could be and I'm pretty sure the majority of the readers on this site are sick of reading baseless, unoriginal, unspecific bitching. He thinks the team stinks. WE GET IT.
You're comments directed towards him were made in anger.
My wife bitches at me all the time, my clients at work bitch at me all the time, my kids bitch at me all the time, the list goes on and on. But life goes on, take it with a grain of salt dude, life's too short.
Will I hurt your feelings that I seriously think we are going to finish in 10th place if not deeper before the season began? You shouldn't, it's my opinion. Some will agree, some will disagree but I find that if one fan complains about our team'serformance or how Bobby is managing the team, everyone's poor little feelings are hurt.
I constantlty get badgered by employees at work who are Leafs fans, but I just shake it off as well. Outside of hockey talk, they are a bunch of people and not my enemies.
We can all wish on tinkerbell or wish upon a falling star but when you add the x's and o's of our team compared to other teams in the Eastern Conference, we are just not good enough to compete with others. I hope I am wrong but if others who berate our team, are they our enemies?
Yeah we beat Washington and tied Detroit, kudos to the team but other teams are winning as well. I love my Habs, and I love reading other fans comments like Timo's which I find amusing and informative.
I just can't wait to hear from you and others what your comments on this site if we don't make the playoffs. Injuries for our demise? Lame excuse.
"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"
RetroMikey everyones bitching at you, wonder why
Way to go Retromikey, I will read all your posts from now on.
You make so much sense that I am flabbergasted that you are tolerated on this site?
Keep up the rational approach to Hockey and the Habs, I'm with you, keep it real!
Smabs are Pretenders and have been for 2 decades!
My feelings are not hurt and I am not angry. I am annoyed and I want HIO to be a spot where I can find informative commentary and inside information. Constant posts like Timo's inhibit that.
I have no illusions about my team and I have never once used the injury excuse. That doesn't mean I want to log on and read comment after comment about how bad we are. I watch the games. I am aware they are not doing well.
Retro I'm glad you enjoy Timo's comments and don't mind the constant negativity. But you are in the minority.
Just asking you to be fair to to others who post Andrew Sharpe, and if I offeneded you, I apologize.
If you go on another NHL blog site such as the Blackhawks or Penguins, you will find positive and negative feedbacks from every fan out there and that includes other sports in basketball, football and baseball.
This is hockey blog, where fans congregate their ideas and opinions which may differ from what you or I think.
It's just liike when you order a fine cut of porterhouse steak, some prefer rare, some prefer medium rare, whille I like mine well done but we all have the same tase of food we like in red meat instead of fish or poultry.
If I am in the minority as you say I am, so be it, my feelings are not hurt. I'm a big boy and can handle myself.
Just suck it up if our mighty Habs are being offended by fans and don't get overly emotional, but don't ask them to be blocked from this site.
They deserve to be here posting as much as anyone else.
"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"
Again, I am not offended/insulted/feelings hurt/etc.
I think a better metaphor would be enjoying a fine steak while a loud mouth runs around the restaurant yelling about how terrible the food is. Tough to enjoy your meal.
And I was not asking for him to be blocked. I was asking for a feature where we as users could stop other users posts from showing up on our screens. This feature is available on most message boards and I've found it quite useful when it comes to weeding out a particular style of post. By blocking four or five users I could eliminate most of the stuff that bugs me. It would not stop you from reading your beloved Timo rants, but it would give others the ability to never have to see it again.
Come on Mikey, you are really defending a guy that went on a rant because we only overcame a two goal deficit on the Stanley Cup finalists on a back to back weekend where we were shorthanded the ENTIRE game?
Seriously.
I absolutely share your view and was actually going to post the same.
It would be awesome if HIO staff could provide us something like an ''ignore'' button so we'd be spared some posts.
I'm sure Timo would be a popular choice.
FAIL
Is there anything about the Habs that ever makes you happy Timo? You fail to ever find a positive in their play. We all knew at the start of the season that this Habs team was a crapshoot at best. You remind of my friend that always goes into a movie with such high expectations that when he leaves he's so disappointed cause he was looking for something that wasn't there. Sit back, enjoy the ride and hope for the best. At least we're playing better than the Leafs!
Mike, gotta tell ya man, that Wings team is NOT the Wings of old. Theyt're slow, boring and reminded many of us tonight of the Devils in their Cup runs. Live and in person they are a shadow of their former selves. Don't confuse Wings puck control with the inability of the Habs to clear their own zone and maintain any puck control. We suck at that but the Wings are no powerhouse. The Wings are overdone. Take them out of the oven already.
That was a good analysis punky, they are on the downside of a great run, possibly their drafting luck by their scouting core may transfer to some Canadian clubs and then we MAY celebrate a CUP in Canada again!
Glad to see your'e keeping it real and it seems you guys had some fun at the Summit!
Are arch enemies welcome to attend?
Smabs are Pretenders and have been for 2 decades!
Some nights good, some nights not so good - just like every team, including the Blackhawks. Look at the ponts - almost all the teams are equal.
Punkster,
THE team to watch?
Chicago: youth, speed, talent, entertainment, excitement. They will go far this year.
Did I mention they're really fun to watch?
You hit the nail on the head first shot GR8, Chicago is a Contender!
What do you think Punkster?
Smabs are Pretenders and have been for 2 decades!
That maybe so, but it only highlights Habs suckiness even more. Even as overdone and overcooked, wings look a lot faster, stronger and just overall better than Mtl. I'd go for a boring Stanley Cup run a-la Devils.
Hope you had fun at the summit, Dave. Surprised you guys are home already - light weights.
timo take off the glass.es you might see the games
Cut
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
Can't see why you would say that. The shots were almost even in the 2nd and 3rd periods - the periods where Laraque DIDN't get six minutes in penalties. And the play was even through most of those two periods AFTER Martin put Cammalleri with Pleks and Gionta. Considering the bodies in the clinic, outside of all the penalty crap it was more even than you say. MABs as I've said had a good game. Detroit got what - 8 and 9 shots in periods 2 and 3?
And all this with the weight of some players - Lats, Laps, VGL - so I think we're not so far behind. Habs seem to have two modes - one where they are keeping up with even the best teams, quick passes, aggressive control in the offensive zone... and one where they fall apart. We saw both tonght - but largely becuase of penalties.
--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!
Glad to see AK46 comming out of his funk, looks like there was some pretty good chemistry on the same line with Cammy and Pleks!
He has been good for a few games in a row,
Tough to lose and to also break our perfect overtime record. But it was an exciting game to watch live with the HIO group.
One cool thing about the live game is people see more so focus on different things. Here's what I saw:
1. FUNNY. Before the game, on the jumbotron they had asked the players how they would do on "Dancing with the Stars". The answers were great - really nice piece.... Gorges and Cammalleri thought they could win it.. Cammy said 'if he could pick his partner'... smart man. Hal Gill said "I'm a great danceer - well you should know I'm good with my feet because you've seen me skate." LOL Being able to laugh at yourelf is cool - way to go Hal. Overall the guys seem so lose this year.
2. CAMMALLERI. My (Sens fan) friend was REALLY impressed with Cammalleri. He had a great game but he did a lot of nice little plays that won't make a highlight reel. He has great chemsitry with Pleks and they seem to like playing together. He said after he had instant chemistry when put with Pleks and AK. As an immodest aside I said before the game that putting Metro on the first line was foolisha and that Cammy-Pleks-AK should be the first line. Martin changed it to that half way during the game and it paid quick dividends. Cammalleri now has 11 goals. Wow - a REAL goal scorrer on the Habs. Whoda thought?
3. PLEKS. My favorite Hab for 3 years, he was great. If Lats could find half of his hunger, drive, and creativity, he'd be a 2nd line winger. He has that extra push that top level players do. He also to me seems to be making a case for the C, not just with his quality of play and effort. He must have taken half the faceoffs or more; Martin plays him in every dangerous situation - it wasn't surprising to me to see that he played over 25 minutes. Something else I really liked - just before the start of the game he skated to other guys and tapped their sticks. When Cammy missed his penalty shot and came to the bench Pleks stepped up to slap him on the head and said something. He seems so comfortable in a central, leader role.
4. LAPS and LATS. Don't these guys know they're playing for their jobs? Lats threw a couple of really nice hits, but it seems like both of these guys are having trouble getting into the game. I wonder what's going on in their heads. Would like to hear from people who might know more than me. I am at a loss.
5. PYATT. Woah! Pyatt was AWESOME. He plays a hungry game, fights for pucks (and wins), can fly in the offensive zone, back-checks. I kept seeing good plays and thinking 'who was that' and it was Pyatt. Biggest surprise of the game for me. A real keeper.
6. OBYRNE. Some mistakes but played really tough. Our hardest hitting D. Kept just shoving people to the ice. Loved it! He's still a little rusty I think.. not his fault, at least at this point. Some rust is expected.
7. MABS. Feel free to disagree (some wilL), I thought he played well. Made no more mistakes than others, and made some really nice plays, including defensive ones. Sorry... gotta call em like I see em.
8. VGL. Vegan George Laraque madea few good plays. Can't make enough to make up for his bone-headed trip. Argh.
9. PRICE. Great positioning. Some really nice glove saves. The point belongs to he and Cammy.
10. AK46. The man is waking up.. sure looks like that. HE deserves the two points he got tonight, made some slick plays, great passing and some good skaing. I agree with teh poster below. THIS AK46-Pleks-Cammy is your first line. Make Gio-Gomez-Moen/MaxPac the 2nd.
I'm curious as to who else saw the same (or different)>
Cheers,
SD

Enjoyed your post.Agree.
To add:
(1) I am very pleased with the effort and "no quit" of this team. They appeared to have a very difficult time getting it all together in the early going, but displayed heart; which was more evident in person and being there than I have "felt" over the TV screen in a very long while.
(2) I am very encouraged by the play of Pyatt. His effort and contribution may help to ease the early going pain of the Gomez contract, since, as I seem to recall, he was part of that deal. Strongly support the "Smart Dog" on this one.
Good post Dog, enjoyed the humour, you must be ready to laugh all the time!

Hey, SD..
Thank you. A great post. (I wish I could see a live game at the Bell one day.)
Hope you all enjoyed the Summit !!
A+. Excellent post.
You are right. Nothing wrong with MAB and how he played tonight. Quite unusual based on his first so many games ;)
I am...shocked, dismayed, perplexed? I have no argument with your analysis. We sat but a few rows form eachother and I saw the same things. Good thing Gomez wasn't playing ;)
Seriously Rob, good call. This team continues to impress me with their heart. Not the most exciting game I've ever seen but no argument with the end result. Just one thing. WTF is up with BGL? Please, trade him or dump him...like, in the St. Lawrence.
I agree about BGL. Would love to see him just gone - waived, traded, bought out, or how about sued for contractual non-performance.
I think the deeper lines are having trouble because of all the shuffling. Martin really needs to start keeping his lines together and telling people their roles. Moving Metropolit to the first line made NO sense to me and left a hole where he belongs.
