Glen Metropolit's versatility will be put to the test once as the third-line centre lines up as a right wing tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes. Metropolit replaces the injured Brian Gionta on the top line with Scott Gomez and Mike Cammalleri.
CKAC reports that Gionta had an MRI on Monday and that results are expected to be known today. But the radio station reports that his absence could be "prolonged."
There was no early word on whether defenceman Ryan O'Byrne has received medical clearance but he practised with Mathieu Carle during the morning skate which indicates that he won't play before the weekend.
Other lines this morning:
Pacioretty-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Latendresse-Lapierre-Moen
Stewart-Pyatt-White
AUDIO: Glen Metropolit | Mike Cammalleri | Jacques Martin
Question: When Gomez looses face offs, creates turnovers, is slow to backcheck or makes a bad pass will he be demoted to the 4th line like everyone else or is he immune to such treatment?

Great! Sleepy Gui! gets to play and Chipper gets to sit again. Another message well sent by JM. Play like crap all year, don't show up on time to games and you wont miss a shift. Then again why would Martin punish old Latscantgetoutofbedtogetdresse for sleeping all day at a hotel and not showing up on time for the game against NSH, He's been asleep all year on the ice and hasn't shown up in a game ether, and somehow got promoted to the 2nd line and even got some time on the PP. Is there any wonder why prospects like SK74 get pissed off when they get cut from a team that has a player as (place your own obscenity here) as Gui! I hope his diplomatic immunity runs out soon, like before 2015 or so
The last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!
Martin addressed that and said Gui was at the rink when he was called. It was obviously a joke that was lost in translation and then completely overblown.

OK take away the whole sleepy Gui! part , IMO Chipper still deserves to play and Gui! still deserves to sit
The last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!
Agreed

Love Metropolit's attitude!

In all honesty Cammy, Gomez and Gionta should not be a line anyways. Individually all very good players. Collectively, too small. Plain and simple. I am still reeling from the smack down Doan laid on Gionta.
At this point it is definitely time to stop moving players around like chess pieces and let players get comfortable in their role. Despite injuries I don't like the idea of making players do something that is not their natural role. Metro does not belong on a first line. Lapierre and Latendresse do not belong on your top 6. The team needs all the help it can get so I don't see why we would not bring up Sergei at this point. A loss tonight and I think it's paper bag time.
Sergei is doing well in Hamilton but he is not exactly dominant. He has 12GP 3G 6A +4. Sergei has proven nothing at the NHL level. He underperformed virtually all last season and the season before. We don't need another underperforming youngster to rotate between the 4th line, the 2nd line and the press box. On what basis do people say Sergei should be with the Canadiens? That he hasn't missed a bus lately or walked off the team? Come on people. JM and BG are in frequent communication with Boucher. They know where Sergei's head is. And they don't make desperation, knee jerk decisions. They have a longer term view. Sure, there is an upside to calling up Sergei. But there is also a rather nasty downside. Internet GMs don't have to worry about the downside. Real GMs do.
SK had a couple of fantastic years in junior hockey. Its a big jump to the pro leagues. So far, in the NHL, Sergei has:
07-08 GP52 G9 A18 Pts27
08-09 GP56 G8 A15 Pts23
Why on earth do people imagine that Sergei is the answer to what ails the Habs? Tom Pyatt has a better record than Sergei in Hamilton. He doesn't miss team buses or skip town. Don't worry, Sergei will be called up soon enough.
Hey I was just thinking it can potentially wake up our second line now that our first line definitely needs help. The two brothers together definitely have a lot to prove, put them together and maybe they will?
Hey, I agree with your upside analysis. We need second line scoring. Maybe SK will find some magic with his brother. And if Sergei crashes and burns, for the third time? Well, then we can all just complain about how BG doesn't know how to develop talent and how this was another prospect whose value has been reduced to zero because a young talent was rushed for short term gain.
I guess the main difference in our positions is that I believe that BG is in a better position to know if Sergei can succeed at the NHL level than we are. I expect he talks to Boucher several times a week. So I really hope SK has a long and prosperous relationship with the Habs, and I'm willing to wait and see when he is called up.
Let's look at some of the other Bulldogs that have put in some time with the Habs:
Matt D'Agostini age 23
Record with the Bulldogs 08-09 GP20 G14 A11 Pts25
Tom Pyatt age 22
Record with the Bulldogs 09-10 GP11 G6 A3 Pts9
Max Pacioretty age 20
Record with the Bulldogs 08-09 GP37 G6 A23 Pts29
There is nothing in Sergei's record either in the NHL or the AHL to suggest that he is any better than any of these guys. But these guys are in a rotation between 2nd line, 4th line and press box because they can't get the job done on the second line. Many Habs fans think SK is our savior. They want him playing with the Canadiens on the second line. How many games do you really think he will play before the boos start to rain down from the stands. How many games before he gets demoted to the fourth line or the press box. And then what?
No thanks. I'll wait until BG and Boucher think Sergei is good and ready to join the Habs. Because really, nobody here at HI/O knows what's going on with this kid.
ON that basis SK should play and Tenders should sit .

Look at the following list, outside of Pleks, the rest would not scare a peewee goaltender. I usuallly see the cup half full, but the re is not a goal scorer in the bunch. How many of these players with the exception of Pleks and Moen could make another NHL lineup with their 2009 performance. Certainly not Lat, Lap, AK#46, Pac's etc. GOD HELP US, WE NEED MORE THAN DIVINE INTERVENTION WITH THIS GROUP.
Pacioretty-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Latendresse-Lapierre-Moen
Stewart-Pyatt-White
Carle shuold be seeing the ice, if not sent him back down. He played better than MAB in the games they both played (not hard to outplay MAB though is it) and Leach has been ordinary and is not a long term solution. Why he is riding the pine for these two doesn't make much sense.
Lapierre, Latendresse and Stewart, in that order, should all sit before Chipchura.
Can someone (sounds like Ainey) call up Sergei K from Hamilton! PLEASE! Haven't we suffered enough? Attitude, you say? He's just a kid, says I. Work ethic, you say? Latendresse, Lapierre, nuff said, says I.
Metropolit is much more suitable than Lapierre on the 1st line. He has quick hand and can operate in tight space.
At least we are not counting on Pyatt and White to score goal for us. They are far from ready to play in the 1st and 2nd line.
Stewart is faster than Chipchura but is less skillful. But we can count on the 4th line to skate and check.
With Gionta out, I agree that this lineup makes more sense than the one on Sunday Practice.
Am surprised that Latendresse is playing. If the story out of Nashville is correct that he was sleeping one hour before the game, then there is a double standard on this team and what the %#&) is SK doing in Hamilton?
I actually don't mind if Fatendresse sleeps an hour nefore the game, it's when he's asleep DURING the game that bothers me
nice
"Long before I ever wore the jersey, I wore the jersey.” Dryden
How much ice-time does that 4th line get tonight?
Ah... Which ones the 4th line again....
The last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!
ask Guy lafleur
10 minutes give or take. I think Martin trusts Pyatt and White enough to give them a regular shift..
Patches needs to be in Hamilton for this season, he simply isn't ready yet. Good to see he's in the top six, as that's the kind of player he's projected to be. However, getting mashed around out there is stunting his growth, not helping it. Although I suppose the way both of these teams are playing at the moment, this could be an AHL match disguised as an NHL one
thats an all star 1st line.
BGL not there?
is he ever there
Happy for Metro.. maybe he can display some of that skills-challenge prowess and pot a couple.
tony marinaro on the team 990 is reporting that we are talking trade with the edmonton oilers he states the player we are trying to acquire is andrew cogliano! tony said that s.kostitsyn and another player will be heading to edmonton for cogliano! what are your thoughts on this?
For more than a year I've thought the Oilers would make an excellent trading partner for the Habs. However, I'm not sure Cogliano is the man. More likely, Gilbert Brule, who is a RH shot and has more offensive upside. Plus, the Habs have always coveted him. How does SK74, Chips and Lapierre for Brule and Tom Gilbert (also a RH shot) sound?
Scartch that idea. Tom Gilbert is too expensive to take on (5.5 million cap hit next year). If the trade happens. it's likely to involve players with entry level or similar contracts.
How about Cogliano and a hard-working defensive-minded fourth-liner for Sergei and Lapierre?
I would say Get it DONE!
I'm a big Cogs fan, so I guess who was going the other way would determine how i feel
EDIT: although, wouldn't help our size out at all.
looks like 3 useless lines.
could be another shutout for the opposition.
Who is in nets?

The lines sounds much better, now when Gionta is back you just put him on the first like again and metro back on the third and keep the first 3 lines at least in tact for basically the rest of the season. I would rather see Chipchura than Stewart though. I think the second line will produce tonight...
go habs go!
I hope Gionta's injury isn't a theme of things to come for any of thh top ? 3 guys. There was some concern out there that once the season gets into full gear , the wear and tear of the heavy hitting might start taking it's toll.
We will miss Gio. We really really need another second line goal scorer. Pacc's is good but needs more time to develop and Kostitsyn has been brutal this year. I am interested to see how Metro does on the top line. What a role change for him this year. I really hope he does well cause he deserves it. After hearing about his childhood and everything, he is already a success story
SO....
What happens if Metro pot 2 or 3 tonight?
"If ya smell what The Rock is cookin"
Then, we'll likely win...duhhh
The Rock never seen a Pussy he didn't like..... Until now!
"If ya smell what The Rock is cookin"
Some goods shots from last nights premiere at the Bell-good to see Markov!
http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/gallerylanding.htm
It would be good for O'B to start tonight against a lesser opponent to get his feet wet again. If he makes a boo-boo tonight there is less chance of it being costly...
Good top lines!
After Gionta comes back:
Gionta-Gomez-Cammalleri;
Metro-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Also, at least 2 field-goals for Lats tonight.
I like it. I thought Lats-Laps-Moen should have been the third line before the year started. Let's hope LaLa work as hard as Moen does tonight.
Pacioretty started to play better once he was paired up with Metro, let's hope he continues to improve.
2 goals for AK46 tonight, book it. It has to happen eventually, right? :S
It's been tried before with much less success than when TtB was with them.
Tonight's the night for AK and Gomez to break out with a few points I would think...
at least Pacioretty's back.
and it's one more spot Lats can't slide his way in once Gionta comes back:)
Pacioretty-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Latendresse-Lapierre-Moen
Stewart-Pyatt-White
There we go.
