Canadiens goalie Jaroslav
Halak makes a save in the first period Tuesday night as defenceman Jay
Leach tries to control Flames captain Jarome Iginla. John Kenney, The Gazette

• At a Glance: This time, you can't blame the Canadiens goaltender for the team's latest loss, a 1-0 shutout at the hands of the Calgary Flames. This time, the blame lies squarely on the offence, or lack thereof. Jaroslav Halak made one mistake on 31 shots, but that was enough for Calgary to extend its winning streak to four games. Jarome Iginla scored the games only goal on a wrist shot that went through a forest of legs and beat Halak, who didn't see the shot. Miikka Kiprusoff made 25 saves in the win, not many of them difficult.
• Key Moments: The Canadiens had a power play late in the third period, but as has been the case all too often this season, Montreal came up empty. They were 0-for-3 with the man advantage against the Flames, but they also held Calgary scoreless on five tries with the extra man.
• What It Means: The Canadiens are now 0-5 against teams from the Western Conference, including going 0-2 against the Flames.
• What's Next: The Canadiens are in Phoenix to face the Coyotes on Thursday (9 p.m.) and will play in Nashville on Saturday night (8 p.m.).

Goaltending....secondary scoring....
How about we start with a little primary scoring?!
As long as we can hover in the .500 area until markov gets back we might be ok. If we cant, its going to be a long season my friends (or a short one, which ever way you want to look at it).
I posted the exact same question after watching last nights game. I'd say it's a pretty big problem.
Markov represents about 5 wins while he is out in my opinion
We're a 500 team with markov in the line up. it'll be a long season with or without him. With markov we'll compete for an 8th spot without him we're an 11th place team...
Despite yesterdays defensive "outburst", excluding Jaro "The Real Deal" Halak, BG should go re-acquire Dandy or Cube in order to restore proper structure and stability in our D-corps. I've been saying this since Day 1, when Markov went down, a few others have suggested it as well, but it seems like only the know-it-alls respond to my proposal negatively. Chelios would also be ideal for this team, some might balk of his age, but I'd say "What do we have to lose?"
------------------------"Let this be a reminder that this organization will not tolerate failure." Dr. Evil
We have more than enough defenseman thank you very much.
fire up the Vinny trade engine LOL
Boone said it best in his About last Night post we have "two pretty decent goaltenders who needs shutouts to have a reasonable chance of racking up Ws."
we need secondary scoring and it was even more evident last night when our primary scoring was not working that well and we hit a hot goalie(when have we not played a hot goalie this year?? lol ) some posters have been asking for pleks to be on the top line because he has been playing so well this year but that wont work either again that was evident last night, don't get me wrong pleks is my fav players on this team but he his not a 1st line player it was clear as Boone also mentioned that the flames did their homework and was very physical with him and add to the fact that he has no lines mates that can play with him he could not create something out of nothing last night something he has done almost everygame this year. we need a phyiscal winger that can score a la Dustin Brown to play with pleks and AK, how to get such a player i dont know how we could this year.
Well the defence looked better; still wayyyyyyyy too many turnovers by the defence and offence(the habs need posted notes stuck to their helmets saying passing up the middle is bad). I also think 7.3 million dollar players (Hi Mr. Gomez) HAVE to score on breakaways.
i say Halak against pheonix and Price against nashville.
Breakaway: Or at least get off a shot.
I agree with Bash and others: Let's stay positive.
There was a lot to be encouraged about last night. Leach played pretty darned well. I would rather see him in there than Gill. Would rather see Carle than MAG.
What I really liked was the team play. When Phanuef blew up Pleks, Laps pounced on him and did what he could. When McGrattan blasted Pleks in open ice, Mara smothered him immediately without worrying about taking the only penalty. Even White chose the right partner and the right time to mix it up. A proven goal-scorer for the Brothers Kostitsyn would be nice, but so would having Markie back now. It is what it is, at least les Boys seem to be playing for each other now.
And we're only 3pts out've 1st place in the North East! And Buffaler only has FOUR games in hand!
We can DO it!

Sieur Bugs Potter, écuyer. Major-général du dépôt de munitions Fort Gainey, contre-amiral du torpilleur de classe-II Sainte Flanelle, et sous-secrétaire du ministère de la Défense Tricolore.
Well, I see both an encouraging and depressing way to looking at things.
We have proven that we can score, play solid defense and get solid golatending. BUT, we have yet to do all of it together in one game.
But the positibe is that we have proven that we can do all of these things and have talent in all those departments. If we can somehow put it all together in one cohesive package sooner than later, I think we will have a good team....and it will only get better upon Markov's return.
but the questions is...can we put it all together at the same time ?
How come BG never kept Steve Begin? SB is doing it all for the BRUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Uhm I seem to remember this was a Carbo F-up.
IE Carbo wouldn't play Begin - said something to the effect he didn't have a place in the NHL.
what is it with people desperate for SK to return??? seriously, the guy has scored 17 goals in 108 NHL games and you think he's gonna save the 2nd line and bring it to a level of scoring respectability??? way too many Habs fans have gone the way Leafs fans: so caught up in years of mediocrity that underacheivers become saviours in their minds!!!
The only reason I wouldn't mind the SK return is because for 1 I've always kinda liked the kid haha.
But other than that I doubt we can do any worse with him on the team, The kids got speed, Talent if he chooses to use it and he plays with a attitude.
I think we should bring him up test him out and if he actually doesn't help the team at all or brings the team(which I doubt would happen) send him back down to the dogs.
Hey, there is a voice of reason out there! :)
We seem to be infatuated with the "bad boys" of hockey like the K bros and Kovy. At least Kovy would show up once every 3 - 4 games vs. once every 10 or so...
To all you NEGATIVE posters, Ihave one thing to say:
I like & believe in this team. Can't wait to shove it up yours when it all comes together & we start moving up. Thumbs up to all the believers and the hell with the rest of you.
CASE CLOSED.
I'm with you Windsorhab! Last nights gane was a good effort by the team against perhaps the best D in the leaque. We showed some spunk and with a few bounces could have won. Leach looked pretty good. MAB was not horrible. Lats went after Dion. Lats played better. All in all we did okay while still missing three D men.
Yes...we need a top 6 forward.
All the negativity is enough to make you puke...
"If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)
Anyone else notice that Cammalleri has been sloppy with the giveaways the past 5 games?
http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
Yes a direct result to the sloppy play by the Defence for the past 19 games. ;)
When the D sucks as bad as they have - the forwards hold the stick a bit tighter because they are worried about what can happen.
Cammalleri is not the only one (all Im sayin)
I've noticed he and Gomez try to get a little too fancy sometimes. Still huge fan of both of them but with a weak or weakenned defence these little miscues become glaring. Nobody does it better than MAB though :) I am always cringing when he is carrying the puck.
I am living in Calgary and will have to read the paper tomorrow about how great the Flames are and blah, blah, blah! Losing to the Flames really sucks! This current edition of the Habs are still finding their way and having to deal with a plethora of injuries and changes along the way. I am not sure if the pieces of a good team are there, but I am puzzled by the system. On the breakout, the defenceman gives the puck to the forward, generally, but then, if the forward meets with resistance in the neutral zone, back to the d it goes! Montreal has oned-man who can make those great passes out of his zone (and we all know who he is!), the rest are not capable. As I watch this, I cannot tell you how many turnovers in the defensive zone it costs. Am I just on something, or does anyone agree with me?
I don't want to see Maurice tonight, I want to see The Rocket!
Earlier I proposed that Bobby G take swift and decisive action should the Canadiens lose tonight, and lose they did. But something else happened tonight that I hadn’t foreseen. I was unaware that David Desharnais was healthy, and he played for the Bulldogs tonight registering an assist. With that in mind, here is what I would do:
http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
B K - A little impulsive are we. I like Desharnais also but he's just back and it showed as he was minus - 2, let him get his timing back and get into playing shape and then think about it................. #2- if they want Mad Pac to be a top forward he must learn to handle the puck much better and extra time in Hamilton wouldn't hurt and he'll learn to keep his head up at the same time....................... #3- Ray Whitney is very small, do we have any of them, and will be 38 in May.
-2 because of terrible goals allowed. Usually when you lose games 4-1 a lot of people wind up in the minus category.
Ray Whitney is about the size of Plekanec. This team could use another one of him right now.
http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
Not too bad of an effort, IMHO! Kiprusoff was outstanding. Halak played well. Leach looked pretty good. Still a few bad turnovers by a few of the players.
(I didn't read all the posts on here tonight, so someone else may have already raised this point) It sickens me that Phaneuf did not get a penalty when he threw Plekanec into the boards! Don't get me wrong, I like hitting in hockey and Phaneuf is one of the best at it! But they were both far enough away from the puck that it could have been interference or roughing! Isn't the NHL trying to cut down on the intent to injure crap? Oh, its Dion Phaneuf, so he doesn't get a penalty cause he's Dion Phaneuf and he hits everyone? BS! The refs missed it? BS! The puck was in the corner, everyone was watching the play! I like Phaneuf (wish he was playing for the Habs), but in my mind, he should have been penalized for that hit. What really sickens me about the whole thing is that Phaneuf got away with that, but any player can lightly tap another and its slashing, or barely puts his stick on another player and its hooking or obstruction or check someone a second after the puck is gone and it interference! Its crazy!!!! The refs suck this year and have for the past couple of years! Maybe the NHL needs to take another look at its rules! Disagree with me on the hit if you want, but that was more dangerous and worse than an "obstruction" call! Kudos to Lapierre for sticking up for Plekanec too, btw.
Let's start a petition to bring SK74 back immediately....!!! and who else?? :S
----- Go Habs f*kin Go - AMEN!!! -----
...out-coached ...out-played ...Men against Boys ...AND We are ...definitely ...the Little Boys
...positives ? = Our no-quit spirit ...(though I don't know How Long THAT will last, with further losing) ...and goaltending (...Jaro kept it respectable)
...no getting away that We were mortally wounded losing 3 mainstay D-men in Markov, o' Byrne and Gill ...We would certainly be more competitive with Them in the line-up ...yet, because both the Kostitsyn's both had/have their heads up Their anuses ...THINGS just will NOT work this season
...I think Bob Gainey did His best to bring in the Talent that WANTED to be here ...but Luck is not on Our side
...Myself ? ...I think I am getting sold to let Our Team fight for a Draft Pick
...I am not in the mood to tear down or reprimand Our Team, individually (except, maybe, MAB...) or The Bob
...I am ready to let Our Team settle in the standings where They belong ...I prefer NOT going for any trades or anything else dramatic, beyond giving the potential with the Bulldogs some experience and exposure
...and unashamedly hope We put Ourselves in position for a Top-5 Draft Pick in July 2010
...except for Detroit ...THAT is what every other team does
...I am not patient anymore to prolong Mediocrity
...because THAT Is WHAT We are ...a VERY mediocre Team
...AND ...there is only One Way to change the dynamics

:\>Men against Boys ...AND We are ...definitely ...the Little Boys
"Les Boys" lost by the odd goal to "the Men" -- so, we aren't that far apart, are we now.
You know your team is really bad when people can't wait to have O'Bryne back.
yep. still wont help with the scoring
Timo, buddy: you're still way too cynical. No, O'Byrne will not help on the scoring, but he will add to the team.
I like this new Habs lineup and attitude. I don't like the lack of wingers for Pleks. Trade Gui! and the Kostits for one French-Canadian good quality winger (all three are Not Good Enough), and hope for farm ep for the other wing.
But I love the rest of the new Habs. Theycare they work they may win.
I really wish that Habs had somebody who was just plein dirty player. I am sick of having a bunch nice pushover guys who don't instill fear into anybody. I want to see a vicious elbow, a knee, a hit from behind, a blindsided check... anything. Flames have played rugged, sometimes dirty brand of hockey tonight and we had no answer. Pleck, AK, Gionta bounced of Phaneuf like bouncy balls... Argh... I hate being nice. It never gets you anywhere.
Timo - your wish is my command. AK46, SK74 and 2nd rounder for R.J. Umberger and a 3rd rounder. Help any?
Don't be impatient. The System will reveal itself at the appropriate time in the appropriate venue and there will be a mighty thunder throughout the NHL when it occurs. Lats and Laps will be set on a pace to score 50 plus goals and MAB will go from a laughable garden gnome to a Norris Trophy candidate. It was all foretold by the ancients and there is no stopping it!
"Embrace the Suck!" "Tank for Glory!"
40 and 84 are only on this team case of their last names. They and mab would not make any other N.H,L team, QMJHL has a hel of lot of work to do to get some decent players on this team again. The Ghosts are definately all gone.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
I said the same thing about Martin!
"If ya smell what The Rock is cookin"
Kordic - I think it sucks that Lats should know that the reason he is still on the team is because Gainey knows he made a mistake in him making the team so soon and owes it to him to keep him and because he's french. You would think that woould make a player work his *** off and do everything in his power to earn his keep and to prove his manager right. When was the last time that he dropped the gloves and fought. Then you have guys like Chipchura who after just coming off a surgery drops the gloves his first night back and two games later. Why can he do it but Lats won't? Is Lats scared? Better than everyone else? Doesn't have to fight for his place on the team? If there was anyone that should have to earn there keep then it's him, imo.
Garden gnome - THANK YOU!!! I couldn't find the right words to describe MAB... this is the best description of him ever.
When the Habs can't score there is no room for the goalie to make mistakes....
"If ya smell what The Rock is cookin"
leech One game.....already our second best D behind Markov. I wish you didn't take any drugs In the summer Bob.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
Leech I haven't noticed much today which is a very good thing... cause for example Bergeron I noticed a lot. He was ok. Played his role, stood his ground, didn't eff up. Now, can we put Carle back in and end the sad Bergeron experiment?
Carle, Belle or Weber would all be upgrades
My good friend Patrice Brisbois would look like a Norris trophy candidate compared to MAB. I think that maybe it was Bobo's plan to bring somebody as terrible as Bergeron so that we'd all wish for Gill's and OB's return and get off his case for have these two on the roster.
I must say Carle was doing well. He got benched because he is young and cant cover all MAB errors. Leech was added to cover the backend for MAB. Poor Carle was looking good, smart with the puck and positioning but MAB is a big liability on the backend.
Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
Enough of the throw back jersey especially with leafs on them, they are affecting our play and making us look like and play like the leafs!tonights game so fun and exciting, but frustrating as well........our p.p. is non existant and is getting worse by the game memo to BOB gainey no more twiddling thumbs get off your *** and get us some help on the p.p i.e. cam barker, tomas kaberle ,denis grebeshkov! get us some wingers to play with tomas plekanec i.e. patrick sharp, alexander frolov we have the stuff to get these players so come on bob do something! i can't or won't blame halak or price for our losses because when you can't score or don't score it's tough to win! in 11 of the 18 games we played so far we've scored 2 or less goals, tough to win any games that way. sorry to my fellow habs fans for ranting but i'm very frustrated right now sorry guys!
I would agree that the throwback jerseys are bad karma. I don't think we can panic and i don't think we have assets to get frolov or sharp. Sharp - his salary is ok but we need to send some back because we are near the cap ( depending how Markov's salary is dealt with) and Chicago is desperate to shed salary. I have heard send Halak and so and so to LA for frolov but the Kings have 3 young goalies (quick, Ersberg, and Bernier) so no go with Halak. Edmonton was scouting so I'm not sure what was cooking there. They were probably shopping D and we are set for D with OB on the mend and with leech and MAB added since Markov went down.
Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
dintrox ,i believe we do have the assests to acquire sharp and frolov!
1. halak would get it done for sharp the blackhawks don't want to give him up but if they don't they lose, toews, kane ,or keith and halak is an upgrade over what they have so they would do that believe me.
2. the kings desperately want to get rid of frolov and i believe the k-bros and and pick would get that done, pleknec would now have his 2 wingers.
i would be amazed if bob could pull that off .. but extremely happy!
i would be too if bob could get those 2 guys
They can play like this and lose every game all season and I still wont change to my sad faced frowning with the Habs logo tear drop avatar. No pain, no gain. Habs fans are girlie men.
We got beat in a one goal game by a team on a hot streak. It ain't the end of the world. If you can't take a roller coaster ride get off now.
Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
Your rollercoaster ride has just begun my friend, enjoy It's the longest In the world. Can you send me some of your drugs?
I LOVE the Habs!!!
I've been a Habs fan for 30 years. Been some great times and been some times far crappier than our current situation. my drug of choice is beer. and if you were here I would pass you one.
Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
Thanks Bud!! you are a habs fan,all class!!! I'm not a big beer fan....van gogh Gin and tonic with splash of cranberry, nothing better after a habs loss...or win. I have to be careful, lives are at stake.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
cheers!
Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
Heh... what, you guys didn't like the game? Come on... the gelling is not complete yet. Your expectations of this team is way too high. What do you want... 20 mil worth of the first line to score? Pfffft... silly.
THis is all on Gainey. The players played hard... however, how pathetic was it to see Habs bounce off Phaneuf one after another? They are small... they are tiny... they can't play big tough hockey. Hey, if they were to become an ECHL team they might have a chance. How lucky are we Habs are not in the western conference? This is ALL on Gainey. He has built this. He has brought shame to this franchise. Molsons, wake the F up and fire Gainey's candy @ss. The guy is in the coma, always has been. Not like it's my money, so I really should't care, but don'\t Molsons care that we have same shite of a team but a lot... i mean a lo-o-o-o-t more money?
Ah well.. eventually Gainey will be gone, but the question is - will Habs ever get a competent GM and coach?
Timo I agree with you , this is all completely BoBo's fault.

But what would your co-workers at Burger King do without you Timo?
I dunno, mate...
How would you win the Cup, please?

Don't tell anybody, but I have a plan... a 5 year plan. Shhh.
29 other teams to follow in the NHL. Gainey isn't going anywhere.
Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
I agree with everything but the comment on the coach. The Count has not been there long enough to judge, but on everything else you are once again spot on.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
Well, maybe not with the Habs but he did couch for a long time in the league with much more stellar players than the current sad bunch. Never came close to winning anything... why would he with this so called "NHL team"? So far his decisions and moves have been what we used to see from Carbo last year. Don't know about you but I am not optimistic.
Hey Timo. Glad someone else who is awake is still awake. Most of the dolts on here tonight are acting like we just lost our first game of the last ten.

It's all about now, now, now with you kids these days.
Patience doggy. You're to eager to hump a leg. Down boy. Now go in the corner and sit. Good dog. Lie down. Now. STAY!!!
I just hope we can muster 2-3 seasons of this. Figures there'd be a salary cap when the Montreal and by extension the Canadian economy is doing better than the American one.
Can you say, "draft lottery!" Atta boy!!
It's not about NOW. It's about being locked into some 2nd rate players for FIVE YEARS. I can stand having a mediocre team - but not at this salary. Gainey is the one that got impulsive and decided he had to fix everything NOW. And look at the sheet we're in becuase of it.

Eh.. let them dream... who cares? The proof is right there in front of us. I still ahve it on PVR and can reply for those who think we still have any chance to make playoffs. And how said is taht we've been reduced to hoping that we'll squeeze in the 8th spot?
But it's all good. I am not worried because there is 2 more gelling games to go.
Erase that sucker. No-one will ever want to see that game again.

Does Mikhail have a brother I'm not aware of???
In all seriousness, before i go to bed. I still think we have a better team then last year. They are playing hard most games, they haven't been burying their chances but as they have been unlucky presently with those chances, their luck is bound to change. I been patient with this team since 94, why stop being patient now. How many teams in past seasons have had a bad first half of the season only to change and succeed the second half, last season I could think of Anaheim and Carolina that changed their fortunes. And we got to remember that we are missing our most important piece,Markov.
You are on the wrong drug...Lsd does not let you sleep, you need to smoke the leaf.
The Habs are definatelt not, not, not, not, not, not even close to last year, they only improved with 21 and maybe 91 but It's still early. Their D Is complete garbage.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
I will never watch hockey on sports net again. The announcers are not only dry and boring..they're incredibly biased I couldn't wait for this one to be over. boooooooooring.
A perspective of how horrible (yes horrible) this roster is:
HABS tied with CAROLINA with 1 win in regulation time. Even the friggen LEAFS have 3 wins in regulation time.
That my HABS fans is messed up BIG TIME.
--Carey Price meet Jim Carey --
Scary sad.
Careful.... the crowd tonight is in the mood for fantasies, not reality.

Ok, let's do it.
Bring Sk74 back and then, let's watch the show.
The show here, not on the ice... cause we know nothing will happen there.
-------- We have a new team! Mike Komisarek: (-2)-0-(-2) Gainey Haters bandwagon ---> This way
Sk74= our savior
i never thought i would say that but i really believe that once he gets back in to the lineup we will be much better
Only If the brothers want to play for gainey. I thnk sadly they are both done. They both have a load of talent, but because of the very Arrogant Bob aka Crusty the clown, they both might go.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
Let's not forget why he's playing for hamilton, here's a hint, it's not because he'll make our team better on or off the ice.
i gotta have something to believe in.............
I was going to go to bed but I'm not done.
For those who say "oh Gomez ALMOST scored...".. it's the same people that say "Price's stats are good if you leave out that game in Vancouver and that other one in Montreal".
Excuses are complete BULL. You have to look at the overall pattern and judge it for what's there. Our forwards cant's score. Our Power Play is one of the worst in the league. It's not even our D that's the problem - it's up front. Look at the stats below - I bet were in the bottom 5 of the league for goals for. Stop with the freakin' bullsh$t excuses and STOP crapping on people who are saying how bad this team is. It's bad. YES if they had just ONE more goal every game we'd be leading the league - but so would any other team. Excuses are for pussies and school children. Grow up and smell the coffee. The Habs may not totally suck because there are a few good players, but as a team they are somewhere between kind of lousy and sort of average.

Go to bed....
you know who i feel bad for ??? the kids....... at least i can drink when i see this much offensive suckage..
I don't feel bad for any of them. They make more money than they know what to do with. I don't care how crappy thier carriers turn. The people I feel sorry for are the fans. It is shameful that the most passionate fans in the league are reduced to watching this shite show.
