• At a Glance: Jaroslav Halak was solid in nets for the Canadiens on Tuesday night, but as has been the case often so far this season, the netminder at the other end of the ice was just a little better. Only this game had a happy ending for once as the Canadiens pulled out a 2-1 shootout win, with Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta sealing the deal to snap a five-game losing streak. They were able to beat Ondrej Pavelec, who played his junior hockey in the QMJHL, in the shootout after the young goaltender was stellar for 65 minutes, stopping 34 of 35 shots. Halak stopped 22 shots in only his second start of the season for the Canadiens. Gionta opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season - only the third time this season the Canadiens have scored the first goal of the game. Colby Armstrong, wallpapered Marc-André Bergeron behind the Canadiens net in the second period, tied the game early in the third period.
• Key Moments: The Canadiens failed to score on a power play for the final 2:35 of overtime, and went 0-for-5 with the man advantage. The good news is that the Canadiens shut down the Thrashers power play, the best in the NHL, on four tries.
• What It Means: The Canadiens finally won in front of their fans and improved to 3-5 on the season, with the new forwards playing a big role. If anything, it should take some pressure off the players and get things rolling in the right direction. However, the Canadiens have still not won a game in regulation time.
• What's Next: John Tavares and the New York Islanders are the next visitors to the Bell Centre, the fourth game of a six-game homestand for the Canadiens.
Reading the article, I wouldn't say the Thrashers goalie was better than Halak. Pavelec was amazing, but Halak wasn't really tested, and the one goal was a defensive breakdown leading to a wicked shot. You can't fault the guy for having a dull evening, but coming through when it was needed.
I know this is a black and white world, but the three on Price the game before weren't stinkers either. Both goalies have looked solid - it just remains to be seen if either can be solid consistently. Game by game, the goaltending has been largely decent, while the goalscoring has been awful. I'd like to see Halak get more work as he's a very good goalie and that the competition for the first string job has not been fair. But while it's easy to focus on the goalie, that's not the problem so far.
I like this idea of Lapierre on the wing with Pleks. Metropolit and Chipchura (who finally played an acceptable if unspectacular game last night) are okay as third and fourth line centres, and Maxime might bring something to the second line that it really needs. It could work out.
Martin should play Halak again, and again, and all year long, long enough to get a play off spot like Carbo played Halak and got fired for that. Wasn't it funny to see Gainey playing Price and losing?
Carbo got fired for playing Halak? Oh really! That gets my vote for the most...Oh never mind!!!
That sounds slightly troll-like, but I'm not saying you're a troll.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
Tommy Pyatt should get some ice time given the injury to Metro and the non-performance of Chipchura. I know it's Chip's last chance, but he isn't doing anything.
Why not Chips, Metro and Pyatt together (Chips on the wing)? Yes, I'm sitting BGL!!!
They are all centers, but could make a very nice 4th line. Right now, I may take them over our 3rd line.
I agree. Gotta say, that Pyatt needs some time in the big league.
I totally agree, and bring up Belle while we're at it. What is with Gainey, he always makes the crap moves when a rookie is doing well he punishes them.
Belle was better than Bergeron at any rate.
Hey guys! Does anyone know what are the dates for special game events? The games that they usually give you gifts. Thanks!

They still made a great trade in getting Dan Paille from Buffalo. He should mesh well with the soon-to-be first line centre, Patrice Bergeron. I say Pat because Krejci has been SUCKING.
Jaroslav Halak's record at the Bell Centre? 26-1.
Is it just me, or does this guy deserve more starts especially at home.
I dont know where you got that. I got Halak last 20 at home 13-7
Sportsnet on Wednesday said Halak was 26 & 1 at the Bell Center. I guess they meant 20-6-1.
Still a pretty impressive home record.
I just read that Lapierre is practicing on the wing of the Plex line. Awesome! I sugggested that just a week ago. Given the chance, I think Laps will play well with more skilled guys, and on the wing.
Obviously Martin is listening to me... :)
--------------------------------------------------- `Could this team miss the playoffs? Who knows?' - Bob Gainey on the new Habs.
SD - the only question becomes who the hell is going to play centre and take faceoffs?
Metro apparently.
--------------------------------------------------- `Could this team miss the playoffs? Who knows?' - Bob Gainey on the new Habs.
Three refreshing changes from last year:
- Martin's bench management. BGL has 3 minutes and the 1st line has an average 24 minutes. That's the way to go when the team needs a goal.
- Shots on goal
- Lapierre fights for his teammate. This shows that this team is closer together.
As long as we have good bench management and the boys are taking care of each other, we should have an enjoyable season (as compared to last year).
Lol. I wouldn't call it much of a fight. Armstrong threw more punches (1) than Lapierre (0).
Up until last night, I've found Laps to be all but invisible, not the feisty PITA that he usually is and that's bad for Montreal.
Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan
Really agree with you on that point...Laps has been invisible this year...every year he has improved...this year it looks like a slide back which is very disappointing...
Seems like the fire has died...
"At least we are not the Leafs!"
Keep in mind he is not getting a lot of ice time either. The big three are getting 24 min a game. Laps is on the third line
I think hes just a notorious slow starter. Im sure he'll pick it up. I really liked the beatdown on colby armstrong. That was the most "engaged" ive seen lapierre so far this season.
Laraque should take a lesson from lapierre. You dont politely ask to fight, you drop the gloves, lay the beatdown, and take the two minute instigator.
1.) Very good game. I thought there was a bit of a lull in the 3rd period by our players and I could see the tying goal coming as a result. So a 60 minute effort still needs some work.
2.) A lot of posters are down on Gill. He was brought in for his size, to kill penalties, to fill a #6 Dman role, and for what he can bring to the dressing room. Then O'Byrne and Markov went down, and all of a sudden he is playing #4 minutes and he's lookng less than stellar. Cut the guy a little slack. It seems every year there is a scape goat on defence. Last year O'Byrne and Brisebois, this year Gill. I think players deserve a certain level of respect from the fans, unless they are bringing a selfish or disrespectful attitude towards the team and the fans. O'Byrne and Brisebois never did that last year, and I don't see it from Gill this year.
3.) Gionta is the leader of the team and shows a lot of spark. Cammalleri is making a good effort and hopefully will start to bury his chances soon. Gomez is playing well too. TSN were referring to this line as the Little Three or something like that. I like that more than the Smurfs, as they are often called around here. One poster came up with a brilliant name a couple of weeks ago, and I am disappointed that it hasn't caught on..."The Legion of Zoom." Come on people. That name is so appropriate and is such a great reference to the old Phillie line. So how about it? From here on in: The Legion of Zoom?
4.) The endless arguments over Price vs. Halak are a little tiresome. As they were for Price vs. Huet and Huet vs. Abby and whoever it was before that. We are fortunate to have 2 very good goalies. I don't think either has reached his potential yet. I was glad Halak got the start last night and he played well. The problem this season thus far is not in goal. It is scoring and to a lesser extent turnovers and defensive miscues. I don't think it is clear at this point that giving Price a big edge in the number of starts is an advantage to the team and it would probably serve both goalies and the team to have a regular rotation until a pattern starts to emerge favouring one goalie over the other.
5.) The Pleks AKost line is still not performing up to its potential. I have confidence in Martin to find the right combinations. But I think Lats could be given another chance at a top 6 position. While the Legion of Zoom is by far our best offensive weapon, I hope Martin continues to experiment with Lats on the top 6, perhaps with Gomez and dropping Cammalleri to the Pleks line and giving that spot to Lats or Akost. And I know everyone thinks the next game is must win just about every game we play, for continued success, we need to scoring lines, not one. It might take a little time to find the right combinations.
Agreeable and rational post -- except for the major clanger of asking for Lats on the second line. There is just no way he is good enough to play above the 2nd line on any team in the league. I like him as a 3rd line (or 4th line) player, but he has massive limitations. We need minimum three times his skill on our second line for us to have a hope of success.
Hey Bill what are you smoking...Lats has been given all the chances possible and still is mediocre at best ...He is always a step behind his hits are late and put him out of position and he loses puck control from even the smallest of players ...I wish they would give all our prospects the tender loving care they give hime ...Talk about Price given a position without earning it ..Lats is the biggest example of that on the team..........sheesh
LOL Thanks Habsrule for jumping in with some useful stats on Latendresse. I think it is also useful to remember that he is 22 y/o. Power forwards tend to develop later, towards their middle 20s. Truth is, I don't know if Lats can succeed as a top six forward. He has tried in the past and not rung up high numbers, so he got demoted. And no, he cannot skate like the wind. But as Habsrule points out, his record thus far is more good than bad. His 5-on-5 production is good and he hardly gets pp time at all. So that is why I suggested we take another look at him as a top 6 forward. Now Cliff, if you don't think what I am smoking is very good quality, and you can provide me with something that is better, let me know. You know where to find me. ;-)
The real question is what is your problem with a 3rd line winger who has potted 16, 16, and 14 (pace for 19) in his first 3 years in the NHL?!? Give him some top 6 minutes and some PP time and we could easily see 20-25 goals consistently, maybe more.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
No problem at all with a third line winger with those numbers: a huge problem with a second line winger with those numbers. And no fair saying he gets limited time. He gets limited time because two very different coaches think he deserves limited time. Everyone plays by those rules, lads.
We need an upgrade on the 2nd line (to match Plecs.)
Well said, Bill. I don't think any fan should be asking our defense to be making up the difference now that Markov is gone. That's impossilbe. I think it's more a case of just trying to minimize the difference.
The lack of a 6th forward is going to be an ongoing problem throughout the year. There's no magical solution and we might have to accept that it's our Achilles Heel (for now).
Good post!
XXIV...and counting
1) agree
2) Bergeron was responsible for the tying goal because he dropped his stick not to mention he was in a fog all game after the Armstrong hit. RDS guys wont admit it.
3) The Big Little Three!
4) Regardless, Halak needs to play more games, CP is not #1 in my books and hasn't earned anything.
5) Plex has been a revelation. Hopefully AKost brings what he can and SKost screws his head on right to get the call up.
My addition: Dags played extremely well especially noted his play in the D zone. MaxPac needs to do some top line time in Hamilton.
Excellent post! Very well said on all points.

gonchar is out up to six weeks.
well there goes my fantasy team
Yeah i know how that feels, I just heard about marc savard, although i only have him in my cheapest pool. Vanek getting hurt in my most pricey pool was the hardest blow, thankfully not for as long as ruff initially thought.
on one team, I've lost Sedin, Markov, Gonchar, Datsyuk
First off Halak was solid. Very Solid. And there were some threatening chances, but he is better with his lateral movement and he doesn't bite, without starting too much of a debate look at how he handled the shootouts, and now think to how price bites every time on the breakaway. second he didn't flop around, he stayed with the play. I for one would like to see him finally get his chance as he has proven time and again that he can do it. I Honestly don't understand how people don't see that.
Second 13 was pretty brutal last night but I think we're all in agreement that it's no real cause for concern.
third D'ago playes one of his best NHL games, certainly his best this season
I dont think anyone will dispute Halaks tremendous talent. Im sure we all think that halak and price should have fair competition. As stupid as it is though, bob gainey staked his reputation behind CP, and will stubbornly continue to go with him. Julien got fired over theodore, only for gainey to go to huet once he realized first hand that theodore was done for.
Want to talk about unfair? The treatment of claude julien by the habs and devils...
I said this well before the season started that if JM decides to go with Halak that Gainey should STFU and go bake some bread.
He doesn't know how to bake bread. He does know a thoroughbred though. They are both very good and Halak will get his 30 starts this year...it's all good.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
I've always liked CP and I still believe he will be an elite goaltender and have a few remarkable seasons in the future. At the moment Halak is the older and more mature athlete. I'd rather see more of Halak, not more games than Price but an even split between the two. It'll harden Price and make him compete harder. CP is not #1 by a far margin and needs mucho work, but I have faith that he will come around, either with us or another team. If Price was in nets the Habs would've lost that game. Someting to consider.
You think Price would have lost last night? I disagree, but we'll never know.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
True, it's only speculation, but I still feel he would've let in a softy or two. He's not there yet. Close, but no cigar. Halak might even play like crap his next game but I still think the games should be evenly split between the two until a true number 1 emerges. They haven't named a captain yet. Why the need to name a number 1 goalie when there obviously isn't one yet either?
I don't disagree with that. I actually think they should play the hot hand though....put Halak back in and play him until they lose...or until he looks shaky (5-3 win may mean he was a bit shaky). I ultimately believe Price is the better goalie when they are both on, but Price has been known to be inconsistent. I also believe when the season is over, Price will have played about 50-55 games, hopefully mostly on merit.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
The Habs fans in here will get their wish. When this season is over so is CP. He will bolt! Then, Sir Halak, will be the Habs #1 maybe until Sanford comes up a takes it away...LOL....
Oh my, the troll has spoken. How are your Leafs doing?
Just heard from a co-worker that Halak and Latenderness were injured in practise this morning and are out.
Can someone confirm/deny?
Apparently on RDS...
Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan
Halak looks like he is OK...Gui may or may not be out
"At least we are not the Leafs!"
Halak took a shot to the chin, left but came back not long after. Latendresse left and hasnt' come back.
Lapierre is practicing on the wing with AK and Plekanec.
I'm assuming that means they think Metropolit is ready to play again? or maybe Pyatt's getting a call.
Can't remember who it was, but a couple of people were arguing for Laps as the missing winger. Timo maybe?
Lapierre on that AK Plekanec line....
That's an interesting experiement.

Certainly hasnt been done yet. I think theres a little bit too much shuffling though, unless MArtin is trying to find which combination has the best immediate chemistry, and is planning on leaving that combo together to develop further. Chemistry will never develop if the lines keep getting changed.
A Must read for anyone that questions the changes made this year:

Thanks for posting that link. Excellent article.
Nothing we haven't heard before. More of the Gainey BS.
Nothing we haven't heard before. More of the craz11 BS.
I thought it was a good read. Good piece on the Blackhawks as well.
I have old records that skip less than craz11.
Matieu Darche scored another 2 goals in the Bulldogs' win last night. He's a left winger who has some size. He can't do worse than Pax or whoever else is on the 2nd line these days. Pyatt also scored hois 3rd of the year last night.
Patches should never have started with the big club, he still needs to develop in the A. I would love to see Pyatt or Darche up. We need some kind of an answer on that 2nd line.
Sidenote, I like Dags on the 3rd line last night, though he still has room to imrpove. If he can't, I would like to see Pyatt given the shot
Although everyone seems to be on the same page on this one, I don't see Gill being benched anytime soon, not only that, it seem his ice time goes up while his +/- goes down.
Either Martin sees something the rest of the world doesn't or Gainey is just being stubborn and is refusing to cut his losses and accept that this was a bad move.
Gionta for Captain!
I'm hoping he waits till after this string of games assuming we win. I think Gionta, Gorges, and Cammy would all be able to handle the responsibility. But if he names them before the roadtrip, and then we lose... i don't know just seems it would lighten the pressure to name him at the end of winning homestead or roadtrip.
Jim...I am about ready to second the motion...just want to see a few more games
"At least we are not the Leafs!"
I dont even need to see a few more games. The fire in that guys eyes says it all. Hes been our best player in pre-season and so far this season. We desperately needed a win last night, and he made it happen. Experienced player, and a stanley cup winner. Hes always there to talk to the press.
All the qualities of a great captain. Im ready to give him the C, and I think Martin should be also.
I think JM will pull the trigger at the opportune time...maybe Saturday night or Monday...might give the boys a shot in the arm before the road trip...
Monday night would be best since I will be at the game :)
"At least we are not the Leafs!"
I find the team is playing a little better each game. But, I have to wonder why each goalie we play has stellar nights. Why is each goalie so hot? I think it's because our shots are not menacing and the guys are shaky. Especially lucky #13. When things start rolling for Cammy though watch out. Don't know about you guys, but when Jaro is in nets, I feel less nervous. Price may be bigger, more talented, but Yaro is more consistent and sharp. I am not just saying this because he won last night. I have felt this way since last season.
I definitely feel better wit Halak in nets. Though he and Price let in the same amount of soft goals I'd say, Carey spreads them out to one every game or two, while Halak will let in 4 once every 5 games or so.
When Halak is bad, he's bad, but at least I know it's just one game. With Carey lately, I get nervous everytime the other team gets any kind of control in our zone.
Wonder if the team feels the same way...
I agree, Halak is more consistent at this point. He also played how long in the AHL?
It's too bad Price would have to clear waivers to go to AHL...I keep hearing about how things are different this season, I keep hearing how he doesn't get rattle...But he looked rattled alot last season, and I sometime wonder when he lets in those soft ones if he has fully recovered. The ahl would be good for him,get back some of that swagger back...too bad.
There was no doubt Armstrong put his elbow to the head of Bergeron and he should have been kicked out of the game with a five minute major. The fact that Mcquire would even comment it was a clean hit shows his complete disrespect towards the Canadiens. Remember this is the idiot that compared the Leafs defence with the Canadiens big three. Why is this guy any where near a hockey rink. It"s no wonder no one in the NHL would ever take this guy serious enough to have him part of any team. TSN time to move on get rid of this jerk and find some one that will bring honesty and intelligent commentary to the hockey broadcast.
i missed the 2nd intermission did bob mackenzie say anything about the hit? cause he is not a fan of those types of hits clean or not.
From what I remember, Bob didn't really have a big problem with the hit.
Since Bergeron is 5'9 and Armstrong is 6'2... if he gets his arms up a little bit it gets close to the head.
I thought Bergeron's head hit Armstrong's shoulder.
It was a really hard hit... after seeing Bergeron standing up looking like he was gonna fall over again... I was surprised he stayed in the game.

mckenzie said it was clean hit. if you look at it he did not lead with his elbow to the head but his shoulder. he put his head down which made it a bad hit. never the less armstrong could have let up given bergeron is a tiny little guy. i would have liked to see BGL drop his gloves next time out as payback...send a freakin message.
too bad bgl is useless. atleast the coach agrees, seeing as he only gave him 3 minutes of icetime.
i was waiting for BGL to go after him.
Exactly.
I'd love to see BGL throw that big body around and send the same punishing message after a hit like that....

Shoot out was lots of fun. If we keep rolling out the big 3 on shootouts we should be on the winning side of most of them...AK and Pleks being 4 and 5 if necessary. Gionta was blazing. The goalie actually was going to try for a poke check but by the time he got his stick in position, the puck was already in the net.
Finally..a win! Even though it was a shootout I'll take whatever I can get a this stage. For as bad as our record is, hockey is often times a game of breaks both good and bad. Sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don't. We hit 3 posts last night, those go in, we win in regulation. I was also thinking too, how many game have we lost where the opposition goalie has stood on his head...3 for sure, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Colorado. If those goalies don't stand on their heads, we're 6-2 vs. 3-5. I know it's been said lots already, ( and believe me I hate it when we lose as much as the next guy), but we still need to be patient with this bunch!
GO HABS GO!!!!!
I counted 5 posts.
TSN has a poll to see what is the greatest goalie mask in the NHL. I say we vote for the worst. Hands down the worst is Luongo. It's disgusting. I hate it.
Hal Gill, what can I say, he makes some good plays taking away pucks with that big stick but if he's pressured he'll cough it up almost every time. Why not give Belle, Subban, and the other defense men on Hamilton a good chance like a few games with the Canadiens and see who sticks with the club. This way the defense from Hamilton will know what they need to do to stay with the big club, pretty much like they did with LaPierre and Latendresse. What do we loose by sitting Hal Gill for a bit.
sure big hal makes a few mistakes a game, but overall he is a decent 5-6 Dman. once we get OB back and have to rely less on big hal, i think people will get off his back a little bit
Well one thing for sure this team is certainly not being outplayed since the Vancouver game. Bad luck, bad calls and facing hot goaltending is the only reason this team is not above 500. The super smurfs were amazing last night but it"s time the the other guys step up and give them some help. We are still struggling with getting the puck out of our own end and the powerplay , well what can anyone say but its just not work.
Montreal needs more face off wins, and we need an enforcer, not a washed up enforcer who wants to think he's a top 10 goal scorer, but an enforcer. I am sure there are other teams that would willing take Laraques. Also last night the refs were fair. While they did not call every penalty at least they did not pick on Montreal. Also Price was not in nets, so Montreal did not lose just by one or by many. Clearly Price has lost his confidence agains this year with the barn burner in Vancouver. Price has a confidence issue and the sooner we figure out that it only takes one game to destroy his year, the better. We should consider trading Price now before any team figures this out and trade him for a high value player in return. Perhaps the Leafs would consider. If this means firing Gainey to do this trade, for the long term interest of the team, Price is a big liability. So far he has not won. We cannot wait years for this young man to evolve cause chances are he's always going to have this confidence problem. Just my take. Maybe I'm wrong about Price, but my gut instinct kind of tells me there is something terribly wrong that not even bringing over Tretiak to coach Price would solve Price. Price needs to get over his Prima Donna attitude, learn how to lose and then get over that and win.
??? wtf? How did we win the first two games of the season? Price! Has Price cost the team a game? No.
no offence to our team's effort as I was glad to see the little guys buzzing but Atlanta looked lethargic on the ice. Kovy II was almost invisible (except the breakaway which was Halak's only tough save). That was definitely not the team that everyone was fearing yesterday. They looked like they didn't care which in turn helped us look good.
Kovy II had Halak beat on the shoot out but missed. Peverly's move was as bad as Cammy's. Gomez and Gio had good shoot outs.
But in NO way does this game say anything about Price. I am not sure where you are making your deductions from about CP but he has kept us in every game he has played (save Vancouver). If we could score some goals then our record would be different and most likely your "Price is a Prima Donna" tune would also be different.
I am glad the boys won. I am happy Halak played well, and I think he should start one of the next two games because of it, but I do not agree with the CP bashers saying "told You so" in a game like that. Halak stole nothing...he played alright against a team that wasn't trying. The goal he let in was the same kind of goal Price has been letting in (besides all the own goals).
What it comes down to is our lack of scoring almost cost us another game!!! We were lucky ATL did not show up otherwise there would be a lot of crying on this site today about dropiing 6 in a row.
Final request: Let's stop the goalie controversy...we have two good goalies. Both give us good chances to win this year...If we can figure out how to put the puck in the net wins will come in bunches.
