Fingers crossed for a very good guy

Robert Lang celebrates one of his 18 goals scored in 50 games last season.

Robert Lang, whose season was ended prematurely last season by a sliced Achilles tendon, has agreed to contract terms with the Phoenix Coyotes contingent upon his passing a physical.

I always enjoyed listening to what Lang had to say in the dressing room in Montreal – a learned guy with a great insight into the game. He certainly was one of the team's most pleasant surprises before he went down in a collision along the Bell Centre boards vs. Boston on Feb. 1.

Every fan should torch their horizontal-striped barberpole jerseys to rid the team of that curse; Guillaume Latendresse blew out his shoulder in the same game, wearing that same gruesome sweater.

Here's hoping that Lang, who was injured when he was leading Canadiens scoring, will land on two strong feet in Phoenix. He deserves to be playing in the NHL.

If it wasnt for Lang we wouldnt have made the playoffs at all last season, he really came through for us when the rest of the players were slumping

Mattyleg's picture

Good luck to my favourite player from last season. A class act, a smart, experienced and talented guy who never took a shift off.

Go for it, Bobbylang!

Nahlsy's picture

Sign him for 2 years and hopefully I can see him star for Hamilton

ManApart's picture

Maybe we can trade for him, at some point this year, if Pleky's game goes south.

Clay4bc's picture

A classy player, and also very talented. Thank you for your time here Robert, and I wish you all the best in Phoenix (hopefully Hamilton soon!).

I was hoping they would sign him. From everything I read he was a great room guy, embraced the team history and the city. I remember him as always smiling. Never thought much of him previously however became a fan.

Good on Lang, I'm glad to hear that...and great signing by Pheonix.

I'm pretty impressed with the Coyotes, especially with how they've managed to handle this whole situation.  They've upgraded their coaching situation, and i say that with no disrespect to the great one, and have assembled a pretty solid young team, which Lang will complement well.  Their young guns could turn out to be really good, and they've brought in some quality players despite being so handicapped.  Pyatt and Vrbata add some some size and skill to their forwards...and remember, this team was in the playoff race till pretty late in the season.  They might just surprise...that said, the West is pretty deep....

Good luck Langer! I too am shocked he did not get a shot with the habs this year. liked him a lot.

J. Ambrose's picture

Last year, Lang was one of those rare players able to elevate the level of play, as well as the mood of those around him. In a season of constant gloomy storm-clouds, his big smile shone through. Just one of many players who deserves a better fate than what has been dealt him.

SeriousFan09's picture

Good long to Mr. Lang, he was one of my favourite players on the Canadiens last season and what happened to him was absolutely terrible, I hope he has recovered enough to play a bit more if that's what he wants to do.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

sidhu's picture

Good luck, Langer - he's a class act who was one of our best forwards until he got injured.  I wish him well.

So who's left to get a contract from last season - Dandy?

I said this last year, and I'll say it again. I'm truly disappointed that he only became a Canadien late in his career. In a day and age where pro athletes act like spoiled babies, Robert Lang was a real pro.  He was a class act, always seemed to be ready to talk to the media, and really seemed like he enjoyed playing in our city.

I wish him all the best, and hopefully he can spark something with some of the talented young players in Hamilton, I mean Phoenix.

I was able to get a stick from the habs and it will be signed by the whole new roster after all the cuts. At the Nov.21st Summit, I will donate it to our Bob Gainey Foundation raffle at the pre game meal at the Baton Rouge.

I have also invited Patrice Brisebois and his wife to join us for the dinner.

What are you people bringing along to donate to this worth while charity.????? Start working on it boys and girls.

Ian

For anyone who wants to laugh for the next three hours, Sportsnet is listing this as Toronto's third line on Thursday

Rosehill-Primeau-Orr

Even Latendresse could out-skate that line by himself.

Rosehill and Orr are enforcers......I would assume that is their 4th line not 3rd.

andrewberkshire's picture

I would normally assume the same, but Sportsnet has it listed as third as per Ron Wilson's labeling.

The 4th line is Mitchell - Wallin - Stempniak (all works in progress, basically what's left of their one way contracts.)

weird.....looks like the laffs will be going nowhere fast this year.  cant wait!!!  lol

andrewberkshire's picture

No kidding! Can't wait to thump them Oct. 1st!

I hate the Leafs as much as the next guy, but the fact is that they won't be easy to thump this year. Last year with no talent, they were able to compete on most nights, and this year they did get a lot better.

Unfortunately, I was informed today that the Laffs are going to hand us our asses on Thursday.

Damn, I was hoping for a win :o)

This guy is an above average player, he will help any team. He is better than some of the players on this version of the Habs.

Huh? Above-average skater?

I like Lang, but he's anything but an above-average skater BEFORE the devastating injury.

andrewberkshire's picture

It says above average PLAYER not skater bud.

Well I hope he passes the physical. As long as he does that the rest will follow. Robert Lang is a winner.

habbygirl27's picture

Best of luck to Lang. Sad to not see him back with the Habs, he was a great presence last year both on and off the ice.

Harani's picture

What did they do at camp?

They got to climb stair and trees blindfolded trusting the guidance of their teammates. Have done that at retreats, pretty fun actually. Here is a video of Cammi talking and his "amis" being candid! Looks like the guys are bonding well....anyone tickle Kovy last year?

That's a great interview. I love it when he says(laraque and lats) "You never see them act like this when the RDS guys are around!"

andrewberkshire's picture

My first instinct was good luck to Lang, but on second thought I'd also like to commend the GM of Phoenix. After all the turmoil the last few months they've signed a guy who's great in the locker room, and great with younger players. Lang might be exactly what Phoenix needs. I still think they'll be competing for Taylor Hall and not a playoff spot, but going forward that organization has just made a really good move.

With apologies to Bruce Cockburn...

andrewberkshire's picture

Well personally I'd like that organization to actually see some modicum of success in the next five years on the ice. Whether in Hamilton of Glendale, the team has been terrible even since it was in Winnipeg.

I'll start rooting when Bettman is out and relocation has occurred and they're not competing with us for a playoff spot

Feel free to slam the 7 million dollar midget known as Buttman but leave Langer out of it, he s a classy vet who gave his all which is more than some of the players who stayed.

doug's picture
I like Lang... And was being tongue in cheek

andrewberkshire's picture

Good luck to Lang!

On another positive note, new video up on TSN where Cammalleri tries to do an interview, it's pretty funny, and good to see our guys are having fun together.

On the other hand. Lang will be laughing all the way to the bank after he leads the Coyotes in scoring this year and we watch him play his great style of hockey in Hamilton next year.

doug's picture
I'm happy for Lang and am confident that if reasonably healthy he'll make an impact. Just sad no NHL team took a chance on him.

"no NHL team"...LOL

Congratulations Lang.   I am sure he will be an asset on and off the ice to the Phoenix / Hamilton Coyotes.

CharlieHodgeFan's picture

It's the best of both worlds - a hardworking, easy to like player like Robert Lang gets a shot at a comeback, but he gets it in Phoenix where he can't hurt the Habs. I hope he scores 40 and they give him full ownership of the team at the end of the season.

Oh one thing Mr. Lang when you get your paycheck from Phoenix take it right to the bank before its bounces.

Lots of luck M. Lang you were certainly one of our best players last year. I wish he was back this year but I think the staff is right in going with the younger players. Still he was a great guy and played his heart out and Wish him all the best except against the Habs . Go Habs Go

Lang was great last season and I'm shocked we didn't give him a tryout for the team.

However The team is faster now and I'm not sure Lang would have fit in.

Here's hoping he will in fact sign with pheonix and that the Czechs will give him a second look for their olympic squad.

Agreed!! Good Luck Smiley!

I wholeheartedly agree, he was our best player for a while last season, too bad it didn't work out better for both sides...
