Flyers - Penguins I

posted by Mike Boone at 18h06 EST on May 9

Same deal as last night: feel free to vent if you're watching the game.

Let's hope the zebras do a better job. Bill McCreary was brutal. The 5-on-3 was ridiculous, the Holmstrom goal should have been disallowed.

That said, Dallas was exhausted and Detroit was .... well, Detroit.

Pittsburgh will be Pittsburgh tonight. But can Philadelphia, sans Timonen, be Philadelphia?

Pierre McGuire thinks the Penguins will go right after Braydon Coburn and R.J.F. Umberger.

Hope it's a decent game. I was watching a movie by the end of the second period last night.

Mitch Melnick thinks Canadiens should bring in Olaf Kolzig to mentor Carey Price.

Good idea?

Was Phaneuf injured? Only reason I ask is because they used to roast guys for not going to the worlds. I guess none of them really had an excuse as good his. I mean, given those choices.

GO HABS.

I think he's been a little too busy playin' ball hockey with lady friend Elisha Cuthbert...

Kolzig is still trying to wrap his head around the idea that he's no longer the man. I don't think he has anything to offer Price. I'd let Halak stick around and prove to the rest of the league he's capable enough to help a team out. He already did that but it was in 2007. I wouldn't move him. If Price is as fragile as all that then we better keep another young goalie around anyway. (In case Price blows up under the pressure.) I definately don't want Kolzig or Cujo to carry the team if Price sustains an injury or crumbles mentally.
I suggested that I thought Halak should get more work prior to the playoffs and much of the consensus seemed to be that Price needed the work. Now the story seems to be that he was burned out. Like a previous poster stated he's going to have to work through this himself with the help of his goalie coach. Trading goalies and adding another because of what someones mental state might or might not be is risky stuff.
If Halak's name came up in a package deal that brought the team the type of forward the team needs then fine. Otherwise, I'd leave it alone.

GO HABS.

Id be all for bringing in Kolzig to mentor Price as long as his annual rate isnt over $1 Million a year. If thats the case, we should spend the money more wisely.

You know, this guy wants to bring in kolzig to mentor price, but i say why not bring in Dryden to chat with him if we could. I mean, he was the same way as price, he did what he had to do to get in front of the puck and i think it would be very benificial for price to talk with him. What do you guys think?

Les-Habitants's picture

I honestly think they don't need to do anything, they pay a goaltending coach specifically for this don't they (refering to Kolzig)? As for taking to Dryden, I'm sure it would help to have someone be able to relate to. If Gainey could arrange a sit-down, why not? I'm sure Price and Halak would get a kick out of it.

Dryden could then draw up plans for a National Goalie Daycare program.

Seriously now, if losing a few games kills Price's confidence then he's not fit for big league anything. We dont need to coddle the kid. He either shakes it off and learns from it or he doesnt.

Playing goal is no place for mentally fragile people. He's going to be just fine. Besides its just about his turn with Elisha Cuthbert.

I think Price has what it takes upstairs to work through this. He'll bounce back well-rested and ready to go next autumn.

I definitely don't want him rushed into Brodeur/Luongo territory re: games played though. I think a 50ish/30ish split next season would be a great start.

(As for Elisha, unfortunately, Price missed his chance, she's with Dion Phaneuf now. Their Hawaiian vacation.)

Moey's picture

It wasn't just about losing a few games, he's a 20 year old rookie that had an enormous amount of pressure put on him. Cut him some slack, I don't want to see him fried in his first season. I hope they split the games between him and Halak next year. Price needs time to develop his physical and mental stamina for the NHL.

This post is for the IT site administrators.

I can't change my picture on my profile, after the terms of agreement when I click on "submit" I get an internet error.

Anybody else having this problem? If someone could check it out I would appreciate it.

Is that Big Brown?

Moey's picture

No, it's Barbaro, I want to put up another horse but I can't delete, change or do anything on the edit profile page, when I try to submit I get internet explorer error. There's something wrong with it, I think it's got something to do with the agreement addition.

If Big Brown manages to win the Triple Crown, he will go up, but for now since I feel that next season will be a serious run for the cup I want to put up a serious horse.

Help please!!!!

coutNY's picture

I have, not sure the cause but I have been able to get around it by, when receiving the error I hit refresh (F5)KEY, this than got me a another screen which showed a red shield warning that asked me would I like to continue with to the web site while saying it does not recommend.

I think your new picture is visiable...? side profile of race-horse head?

The smartest move Atlanta can make in its franchise history is to move Waddell out as GM.
He is a terrible GM, and in fact has wasted a great opportunity to improve his club.
A few seasons ago, Atlanta, Pens, and Caps were all in very similar positions but now look at the Caps and Pens, both very much improved teams.

Atlanta, on the other hand, is still stuck in reverse. They lost Hossa and if they don't improve they will lose their franchise player, and I'm not talking about Kari Lehtonen.

They need a new GM and a new coach. If Toronto doesn't jump on Armstrong, Atlanta should give this guy a call ASAP.

if that guy actually gets another job as a GM, I should apply too. Good money, and it seems anyone now-a-days can get hired.

ROY up next to return to Avs? This organization finds it hard to let go of yester-year.... reminding me of another great effort of trying to reunite some old friends...

So, why didn't the Philly Flunkies play like that when they played the Habs? I have rarely seen a so-called playoff team cower and panic like the Flyers did each time Sid and Malkin had the puck.

The idea of signing Kolzig to serve as Price's backup and his mentor has some superficial appeal given their history together and the respect that Price seemingly accords to Olie the Goalie. But, as a Habs fan and someone who lived in Washington since Kolzig was drafted and then became the Caps' #1 goalie, I am very against this idea.

Kolzig would be a cancer in the locker room - he has a tendency to let his emotions get the best of him during games - he can be seen splitting his stick over the crossbar or nailing the waterbottle after allowing a bad goal. My understanding from talking to friends who are Caps fans is that Olie's attitude didn't sit well with some of the skill guys, like Ovy.

Sure, Olie was a professional after Huet was acquired, but it was in his best interests to swallow his pride and sit silently so as to give the other 29 teams the impression (real or not) that you are a team player with solid character (see also, Ryder, Michael).

A lesson from the Habs exit from the playoffs is that Price needs time off - he can't (at least not yet) play almost all games like a Nabakov or Brodeur does. Given that, Halak should be pleased that he will get in a good amount of games and should want to stick around as Price's backup.

halak needs a guarantee that they would give him at least a shot in training camp and the start of the regular season to dislodge price...otherwise i feel he's gone. He needs a fair chance, despite most of us pulling for price already.

Les-Habitants's picture

Good post and analysis.
The goalie tandem we have now, with Rollie coaching, is one that I would keep for as long as we can.

Didn't Kolzig train in the off season with Price before? Might not be a bad idea..

Maybe Kolzig was a bit bitter that Huet took over....I think he's been there since 76/77... =)

Kolzig owns the Tri-City Americans, Price's junior team. So they go way back.

Who gives a Flyering-Penguin 'bout this series. Truckers VS Captain Pampers. I'll blow my hard earned brewskis on the finals instead. OK, OK.. so i'm drinking now and my BACKSPACE key really says BAC---ACE and it took me 7 minutes to type this.

Biron beatable.
Penguins keep rolling along.

Exit - What a time to make changes , just 6 weeks before the entry draft and then the free agency that Waddell was supposed to be very active but i guess they want the new GM to pick his own coach.

Exit716's picture

Nightmare. He traded away Coburn for Zhitnik and Hossa for Colby F'n Armstrong.
His draft record makes Rejean Houle's look like Sammy Pollock.
He's been fortunate to be in a market where it doesn't really matter and the owners appear to be clueless about hockey in general.

yathehabsrule's picture

Wasn't Waddell one of those "I guarantee the team makes the playoffs" types, albeit that was 2 or 3 seasons ago ??? I guess that only applies to coaches who make those comments (Maurice).
