Nice souvenir

Hockey le Magazine has published a 260-page special edition devoted to the Canadiens' season. Highly recommended if you can read French, and worth having regardless just for the photos and statistics.

Cover shot is Alex Kovalev on his back with his legs in the air as Saku Koivu raises his arms to celebrate a goal in THE GAME, that Feb. 19 classic in which the Canadiens came back from 5-0 to beat the Rangers.

You'll find that on pages 142-143: another photo of Kovalev, a summary and detailed stats on the game, head shots of the three stars – Michael Ryder, who scored twice; Kovalev (two goals) and Jaromir Jagr (four assists).

There's a similar two-page words/stats/pics spread for every game the Canadiens played, from a 3-2 win in Carolina on Oct. 3 to the 3-1 conquest of the Leafs on April 5.

The magazine also includes single-page articles on playoff games, plus analysis and stats on each player's season. They call my man Josh Gorges "Monsieur Courage" and my other man Sergei K. "Serge le Terrible" (it's a compliment).

The writing staff includes RDS play-by-play man Pierre Houde, CKAC analyst Dany Dubé and La Presse beat guys François Gagnon and Pierre Ladouceur

The publication sells for $10 and is available on newsstands all over Montreal.

If you're outside Queebec, there's a web site for Hockey le Magazine.

Also hot off the press: The Hockey News draft preview issue.

Steven Stamkos is on the cover. Drafting 25th, the Canadiens won't get him.

THN's 25th-rated prospect is Joe Colborne, a 6-5, 190-pound left winger who plays Junior A hockey in Camrose, Alberta. Desire may be a question mark: Colborne's father is a millionaire oil industry executive. (For what it's worth, Mike Comrie's father owns The Brick.)

Last June, Canadiens took defenceman Ryan McDonagh with the 12th pick. The Hockey News 2007 draft issue rated McDonagh 30th. The magazine was closer on Max Pacioretty: it had him 24th and the Canadiens took the big forward with the 22nd pick.

"I don't think we have any significant weaknesses," Trevor Timmins told the Hockey News.

Fine. But if a forward with size is available at 25 ...

Top-rated Q prospect is a Belarussian. Centre Mikhail Stefanovich, who plays for Patrick Roy in Quebec City, is a pal of Sergei Kostitsyn. THN has him 20th.

Top francophone is Yann Sauvé, a stay-at-home defenceman with Saint John in the Q. Hockey News has him 23rd.

Not a stay-at-home defenceman: Mike Green.

Wow!

I took your advice and it's the best 10 bucks I've spent in the past month. Worth every penny! Thanks!

Well at least we have the draft to look forward to. It will be interesting to see what Bob and Trevor have up their sleeves.

I have a question for those more knowledgeable about junior hockey. If this Colborne kid is good enough to be ranked that high for the draft why isn't he playing major junior?

Because like Kyle Turris, who played Tier II junior in B.C., Colborne plans to play college hockey in the U.S. Major junior in Canada blows NCAA eligibility.

Mr Boone & Mr Stubbs - Did you fellows enter a team in the HIO hockey playoff pool? Just wondering because we never see your names listed in the top 50. Same goes for Chris, the head honcho of the pool. Or were you guys excluded due to the fact that you work for The Gazette?

Edit: for some reason I have posted this message on two different threads. I have no idea how that happened or what I should do to erase one of them. Sorry about that!

Nope. I'm not a Pool or Fantasy League guy. Detracts from my focus on favourite teams.

I know all about Joe Colborne! I've been hoping he'll be drafted by the Canadiens for two years now. His work ethic and desire is unquestionable. He's a good Canadian kid. He's a great locker-room guy, great character, with unquestionable offensive skills. He's great defensively as well as offensively and he could be the big centreman we've all wanted. The only thing that I've found he's lacking in is really using his size to its full potential. He's lacking some grit and physical intensity. He's not as tender as Latendresse, but a 6'5" guy thats likely to fill out the frame by the draft needs to use his body a bit better.

The saying 'take the best player available' obviously makes perfect sense but I feel that if it's even half close we should try and take a forward with our first round pick. The bigger the better.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a Hockey le Magazine in Southern Ontario?

The Teacher's picture

Do they have anything like "Multi-Mags" in Ontario?

Yes, that goal. From a better angle

Wow is right Mr. Boone. What a great hockey game between Canada and Sweden. I thought we should have had at least three in the early going but Sweden gave Canada lots of trouble late in the game. Great win and a sure to be classic against Russia on sunday. GO CANADA GO!!!

Keith - Canada vs Russia - how many times have we been here before?! The tradition continues.

YEA!! Since I can remember 72 it just keeps getting better and better. Canada is the only team I will cheer for since my Habs are out but you know what I mean :0

Mr.Hazard's picture

So it's basically an every-game summary issue?

Ex nihilo nihil fit

Mike Boone's picture

Yes, plus other stuff.

Mr.Hazard's picture

10$ for 260 pages sounds like a good deal, i'll definitely check it out.

$10 plus the tax our governments shamefully slap on printed material, thus discouraging reading, thus perpetuating ignorance, thus enhancing the prospects of the scumbags being re-elected.

Nice point.
