Ho-hum, another RDS record

posted by Mike Boone at 17h42 EST on Apr 22

Average audience for Game 7 was 2.03 million viewers. Viewership peaked at 3.08 million at the end of Canadiens' series-clinching win.

RDS's market share for the telecast was 52 per cent. This is absolutely unheard of in the 100- (and 200- to 400-) channel universe.

Previous record was Game 6's average of 1.88 million.

When I saw Pierre Houde in the media room before the game I asked if he had a ratings bonus clause.

"No," Houde said, with a grimace. ""But my contract is up for renewal."

Memo to RDS: Give the man a raise. Yvon, too.

Another memo to RDS: Bring Chantal Machabée back to your in-game Canadiens coverage.

Chantal is doing avant-match only for the playoffs.

Bummer.

Of course, I'm totally biased. I'd rather watch Chantal than the actual game.

Turns out Zdeno Chara played the series with a torn shoulder labrum.

It's an injury, Mitch Melnick pointed out today, that would end a baseball pitcher's career.

Hockey players are made of sterner stuff.

I guess those Pennsylvania primaries weren't much of a draw. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Now, if only Shaw would pick up RDS HD channel... I have been bugging them about it all year. Anybody who lives out west, please do so too. Once RDS goes HD here it's bye-bye CBC forever.

...Am I the only one who's painfully aggravated by almost all of Ms. Machabée's questions? I feel like she has a very topical understanding of hockey, and her questions almost always seem pointless or shallow... I prefer Ms. Campbell who does interviews for the CBC. She knows her stuff. Mind you, that's pretty much all I like about the CBC broadcasts...

Hmmm, that's interesting -- I have basically the opposite reaction to those women! :-) I find Chantal to be knowledgable, personable, quick on her feet, and think she has a great rapport with just about everyone she shares the screen with. I remember being really pleased when I heard Cassie Campbell was joining the CBC team, and I have so much respect for everything she brought to hockey, to Team Canada and Hockey Canada, but I don't think she's cut out for this. Every time I've seen her interviewing someone, I found her very stiff and unnatural in front of the camera, and for a woman who played the game at the top level for as long as she did, it seemed she could never come up with the kinds of relevant, in-the-know kinds of questions you'd expect from someone with her experience. *Shrug* different strokes, I guess. Awesome lady, just not my sports broadcasting cup of tea.

it's great for RDS, but, maybe because french is my first language, i can't stand Yvon Pednault, everything he say is so cliché... and useless. Dany Dubé is 100% better than him on CKAC. to bad he's not on RDS.

Wops's picture
You're not biased... The fact is, Yvon is not an analyst, he does nothing but redescribe the action... He is good with stuff away from the ice, like the CBA. He should step down and take a spot a la McKenzie, he would suit him better. as for Pierre, I like the guy. Dany Dubé is indeed the man. _______________________________________ CH is for Chris Higgins

Note to RDS: Bring on Dany Dubé. The guy knows his schtuff, expresses himself so well and is professional in what he says. Seriously. And he tries his best to pronounce names correctly. _____________________________________________________________________________ Kovalev's hair is so shiny....they caught Theo stroking it once saying "Myyyy Precioussss"

Yeah, luxie, I'm with you on this one. I think Pierre Houde is great, but Yvon irritates me. He obviously irritates me a lot less than the tools over on CBC, but his schtick does get old. But definitely congratulations to RDS!! They put on a good, detailed, comphrensive show night in, night out so I'm happy to see them pulling in these numbers. I just wish they'd be faster at getting back to the play post-commercial.

Congrats to RDS. And I agree with Boone about Chantal. Id love to see more of her - chalk that up to any meaning you wish and your right.

I knew RDS would have to beat a 3 million share but 3.08 amazing. Eat yer heart out CBC!

True, senor Boone, hockey players are tougher than the rest. Then again, Chara doesn't need to throw the puck at 90 mph a few hundred times a week. Much as Habs fans love to hate him, I like to like him. He shut down our top line, got to Kovy's head, and even though he can throw anyone around like a rag doll, he's actually pretty restrained and a fine defenseman to boot. I, for one, will not underestimate the Bruins for a long time to come.

I also like and respect Chara. An honest hockey player. Not dirty, like Pronger.

Yup, he was very very GOOD in this series, injured even. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

whatever- once a circus freak always a circus freak. and while i never knew there was a debate who was tougher between baseball pitchers and hockey players, if you can throw you can throw. if you can't you can't. not a question of toughness when a baseball pitcher is on the d.l.

Kudos to RDS, good for them. Also, I wonder what we will learn about Markov in... June :D
