... that the screaming gladiator on TV is one of my acid flashbacks.

That dipstick didn't REALLY walk up from the Senators' room onto centre ice.

What a pathetic, jive -ass franchise.

Worse than Toronto.

And now that cop is going to sing.

Go Penguins!

A sens fan walked into work the other night and I actually felt bad for the guy. His team is done and then he had to listen to Habs, flyers, bruins and even laff fans make fun of that stupid gladiator followed by the weird singer. I actually kept my mouth shut because I couldn't bring myself to 'pile on' to the guy. Bad time to be a sens fan. GO HABS.

TommyB's picture
If my memory of history serves me correct, in Roman times gladiators dressed like the chap at centre ice last night. But senators? Am I not correct in thinking that senators wore olive-branch tiaras on their heads and white dresslike garments (togas)? Wait...I guess I do see the resemblance to these Senators now!

That's the one thing I don't like about RDS telecasts - they don't show the Canadiens pregame show, which is always giving me chills. In this (and only this) department it's 1:0 CBC

it gets even since RDS has no don cherry on the air! :D ______ an expert is someone who learns more and more about less and less, and eventually knows everything about nothing. http://habs-io.myminicity.com/ - click and populate!

it's probably up here somewhere, but for those who haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGfn5SDa4GM Rise Sens Army!!!!

Very shrewd move by the pens in blowing the last game of the season in order to hook up with the sens. Whether it was to avoid philly or play Ottawa it has worked out great. I know the pens are playing extremely well but I gotta think Ottawa is the worst team in the post season at this point. Between their total lack of confidence and injuries (and whatever else is going on), they look like a team that is lost. The injury thing will probably save Murray's a$$. Truth is though, the Paddock firing did nothing to solve the mess. GO HABS.

PattyBoy31's picture
you could just imagine the scotia bank place / sens staff around a conference table and thinking it was a great idea. haha, as i write this it comes up on sports centre. it wouldve been fine outside of the rink, but believing that is going to pump anyone up?

RGM's picture
Ottawa has much worse problems than a stupid gladiator. The last 8 minutes of that game were like watching a no-hit pond hockey game. They have no pride, no guts, no heart. When you're down 3-1 and then 4-1, about to go down 3-0 in the series that you accused the other team of throwing a game so they could play, at least show some passion and desire to send a message that you're not going to go down easily. I'm not saying goon it up, send Neal after the goalie, or any of that garbage, but play hockey with at least some intensity. Finish a check, hit a player, let the Penguins know that they have to win 4 games and that it's not over yet. That was a pathetic display by the Senators, and they deserve to be the first team eliminated from this competition, because they've already raised the white flag. ----- Go Habs Go!

Chuck V.'s picture
To be honest, I don't care much for the Sens and don't really want them to win just out of Habs pride, but the very least they could do is make a series of this and bang up Crosby and company before they face us!

ryantheduke's picture
just to add my 2 cents.. i also saw that and did a couple double takes.. but there really was a freakin gladiator at center ice.. pitiful! glad to see 'em down 3-0.

Les Habitants, To be fair, as brutal as the Sens season has been this season, you can't really generalize say they are a poorly run team. Not with how good they have been over the past 10 years. There have been zero Cups and a bunch of early playoff exits, but they have been one of the best managed teams in the game. They were considered the prototypical model to follow in the hockey world a few years back by develping homegrown talent at a time when big budget teams like Detroit, NYR, Leafs, Philly, etc. were buying players like crazy. Not trying to boost Ottawa or anything, but a few years ago we all wished we had a roster to match the Sens'. That said, our patience paid off and I can't stand Ottawa!!! I wish they would have won this series though because Pittsburgh is gonne be one tough customer.

Les-Habitants's picture
Ok, maybe a poorly run PR department...sorry, was kinda dumbfounded by how awful that opening skit was...

Les-Habitants's picture
Wow, thank you Mike Boone. Who the hell is running these Sens games?? What the F. was that?!?!? I mean, for crying out loud, I thought that was the worst opening I've ever seen...even the Sens fans in the building were in shock. The plastic sword was the cheesy icing on the cake. What a joke. "Sens Army" this giant d-bag kept on screaming...my god, Ottawa has officially lost its right to hold a hockey franchise...or at least, any respect. On another topic, Nonis fired. Kinda a shocker, but should it be? The team may have been injured like no other, but it was a team built with glaring holes...most obviously, any offensive muscle. Since I'm on the topic of poorly run Canadian hockey teams, I'm still guessing Nashville's GM Pollie will be the Leafs new Prez and GM...that is, if Detroit can eliminate them. Go Pens! And just a question, isn't an actual Senator simply a political title, even back in the day? They could make their logo that of a large, overweight balding politician of no relevance.

Oh lord, I had originally missed the beginning with the players lining the hall. I'm not sure if their straight faces are testament to their quality of acting, or to their utter disbelief and embarrassment at being involved in such a farce...

Chuck's picture
Come to think of it, one of the players should have cross-checked him as he walked by. Mascots should be seen, and not heard. . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

Oh my gawd, that was embarassing. Judging by the end result, the technical difficulties may have taken away from the frenzy inducing effect of The Centurion. When do we get Youppie out there at centre ice for a breakdance session to "You Can't Touch This"???

That would be rad!

Chuck's picture
It would have been cooler if their mascot was a Transformer. . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

I am embarrassed to be from Ottawa after seeing that gladiator.' *Hangs head in shame.*

glib's picture
The great part is that the gladiator's lines are actually written on the inside of his shield. You can see it really clearly when he puts both arms in the air. Helmet doesn't work, audio malfunctions... Talk about patchwork. A perfect fiasco in tribute to a disaster of a team.

Habsgirl's picture
I still hate the Leafs more than the Sens but they're second in line. Why are Ontararariossssss so obnoxious? And I live here. Go Habs.

heh.. my brother noticed that too after I showed him the video. We had a great laugh over this one and all the comments on here and youtube. Drive For 25 Is Alive!

Don't worry guys Wings lost to Nashville today and its 2-1

That was the lamest thing I've ever seen. Pathetic, really. Do they really think a WWF approach to the NHL is gonna work? I'd be embarrassed to be a Senators fan right now.

Sbah Reverof's picture
That gladiator was lamer than a two-legged cat. Ottawa should have thrown a toga party instead.

i love toga parties!

Btw, Lucic is leading the playoffs with 18 hits. Hammer, Komo, and Lapierre are tied for third with 13 hits. __________ 16 for 25 all for one

Habs-Kat's picture
Hmm, Komo's not doing too bad, but he's still not Komisaurus so far.

A mostly useless stat as it doesnt indicate the result of the hit or how effective it was. Lucic's hits tend to hurt and cause a change of posession. Laps hits tend to annoy...

Mr.Hazard's picture
My (hopeful) prediction is that Komi will finally be full-swing tomorrow. He's gonna come out the beast he is, incidentally making Lucic look like an amateur. Ex nihilo nihil fit

bigjames's picture
looks like preds are gonna beat wings... (there is a pun in there somewhere!)

I wonder if there is panic in "hockey town"? And if the local fans are calling for saviours from the minors.

That 3-0 hole the Sens just dug for themselves sure puts that ugly 2-1 Montreal lead we're so worried about into perspective, doesn't it? How the mighty have fallen.

GHG33's picture
I thought the habs would play exactly like the pens did in this game.. weather the storm for the first half of the game then take over in the 3rd and put them away. Unfortunetly it did not happen that way. Hopefully we will want it more now and come out firing on Tuesday. Drive For 25 Is Alive!

Mike Boone's picture
This is the team that began the season thinking they were the 1976 Montreal Canadiens? I don't know if the gladiator is coming back, but cue the fat lady to sing.

Wamsley01's picture
The whole notion that they were on the same level as the 70s Canadiens was ridiculous In October the Sens had zero cup winners on their roster (does Gerber really count?) No multiple Cup winners in Savard, Cournoyer, Lapointe, Dryden, No early 20s Superstars on par with Lafleur, Robinson, Shutt, Gainey and Laraque (JK on Bunny :) No goalie on par with Dryden, Emery...please. So just because some idiotic reporter/TV personality decided to do his 1 hour research a week and use his simplistic analyzation to perfection we have to listen to this nonsense for the next 6 months? Laughable

Exit716's picture
They are now more like the 1976 Washington Capitals. Lots of money locked up in two invisible players in Spezza and Heatley.

I think the sweethearts like Spezza and Heatley could use a healthy dose of reality from a coach like Carbonneau. Their disappearing acts are becoming infamous.

the_larry's picture
Maybe a fat lady dressed in a toga for tomorrows game...

Propwash's picture
Yup, Sens are up the creek without a gladiator's paddle 3-0 Pens in the series maybe they should put Emery between the pipes heeheehee _______ Losers Even After Fourty Seasons

showey47's picture
ah yes i remember that

the_larry's picture
I just did some research on that intro. The Senators logo is of a Roman soldier (Roman Centurion) but the mascot who came out on the ice was dressed as a Gladiator, who were the Roman's slaves... It makes no sense. Complete stupidity

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Absolutely ridiculous. . . so embarrassing. Wonder if they got the idea from this dude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np6zT-b7Dak&NR=1 It's actually embarrassing for all of Canada and for hockey. Poor players that had to come out after that.

I don't understand how the sens fans didn't just burst out laughing at the farce their team has become. Pitiful.

Ed's picture
Thanks for the link. What a PR disaster!

Sad. So sad.

It may not have been a stupid ploy after all. Think about it; tomorrow everybody will be talking about the gladiator and not the crap team it represented. It's probably no coincidence that such slick deception was performed in Ottawa.

GHG33's picture
OMG! Thanks for the link I missed this.... what were they thinking? That is one weak lookin Gladiator. Drive For 25 Is Alive!

Mike Boone's picture
How do the players keep straight faces while he's walking past them? That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen in sports. Ottawa will be a laughing stock for years.

doug's picture
i love your comments, mike. you are so spot on and hilarious.

Blitzen's picture
I still think the Expos' old mascot, Astro (or something like that) takes the cake. That thing used to scare kids out of their minds. If they like Roman influences, I'm thinking Nero playing the fiddle before the next game. _____________________________________________________ Remember February 19th: The Comeback

Wow... I couldn't even get through the whole 2 minutes... It's even funnier now, because I just watched it, and the Sens are down 4-1...

I just watched it again, and I'm still laughing. Some of the comments are priceless, and I think it's telling that some of the worst are from Sens fans.

If I was a sens fan I would be walking aroung around with a paper bag over my head after that horrible horrible opening. What the hell were they thinking ???

What a brutal call. I think Malone sold that one a lot. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time."

showey47's picture
i agree and since cherry hates the sens because they are a laff rival it will not be brought up on coach's corner

As a student of Roman and Greek history I'm torn between rolling on the floor laughing and wanting to cry that was so bad. I can just go on and on about how stupid that was...

So you too must be wondering why the "Senators" have a gladiator as a mascot? I never got that.

Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Put the guy in a legionnaire get-up for god's sake. Have them carry in a Sens standard or something! A golden eagle or something! Or at LEAST have the Spartan have something remotely connected with reality. Put a Lambda on his shield, give him a spear. It's so stupid on so many levels... At least they have a legionnaire on their uniforms...

I guess an old white guy in a toga and gold ring wouldn't instill fear in the hearts of opponents. Actually, they should have Frank Mahovlich on their jersey...he's a senator.

Mike Boone's picture
Wow! Dave Nonis fired in Vancouver. He engineered the Luongo trade. Cruel business. Owners (except for ours) have no patience. Melnyk will fire Murray (unless he's in jail).
