And the CBC sucks.
But you knew that. Here's the latest evidence:
RDS's telecast of the Canadiens-Bruins opener on Thursday night drew an average audience of 1.48 million viewers.
The English telecast, on the CBC, averaged 1.186 million.
In comparing the numbers, note that RDS is a cable and satellite network that reaches 2.57 million Canadian households, mainly in Quebec.
The CBC, which you can pick up with a decent set of rabbit ears, reaches 13 million households.
RDS's viewership was the second highest ever for Canadiens' hockey. Last season's tragic finale in Toronto drew an average audience of 1.531 million – a number that will be exceeded as Canadiens continue their playoff run.
I hope Chantal and the boys have ratings bonuses.
Not necessarily trying to learn French necessarily but I have been watching the games on RDS for 2 years now... and I fully understand the play by play. After watching game 1 on CBC I switched back to RDS for game 2. I enjoy RDS better - even with the language barrier.
Now comes the superstition... they played a better game 1... do I switch back. I feel like Carbo. I will stick with the winning line up for now. :-)
Cheers,
Piche
for me it's RDS but i like McGuire and Dubé on the radio because i have difficulties listening to Pierre et Yvon and their offTopic jokes and non-sense comments. i will not add more than that because i will get very, very, very ugly.

I don't care who shows the game... i'm just glad I finally get to watch (No RDS available north of Toronto when not on rogers, and i don't have satellite). Isn't it a good thing that Montreal is getting more overall exposure atleast? Maybe if ratings increase for the habs games on CBC it'll mean more habs games nation wide, better coverage, and the eventual banishment of Don Cherry?
just my 2 cents...
I'm trying to learn French so I can follow RDS and the rest of the Habs coverage more closely. It'd also be great to understand Carbo, Lats, Max, and the other French-speaking members of the Habs when they give interviews.
My understanding is that if you try to make an effort to speak French in Montreal, the locals really appreciate it and will help you out.

My only beef with RDS (actually not RDS but Shaw) is that there is no RDS HD here in CAlgary on cable. Either have to go with Bell satelite (and I think I hate bell more than I hate CBC) or watch CBC is I want HD picture. So I watch CBC for now, but can't wait for shaw to pick up RDS HD. If there are any other westerners out here please email or call them. They told me that they need to get enough demand to bring the channel into their lineup.
... same here regarding RDS in HD. Watched the first game on CBC before swtiching to RDS for game 2.
If the game's on TSN and being called by Cuthbert, I'm in. I've always liked him, going back to the CBC days, the way he calls a game just makes it interesting to hear. The only way I'll watch the Habs on CBC is if it's Jim Hughson, and the poor sap is being assigned to the Ottawa series.
It takes a lot to get me away from the pros on RDS. My French, rusted worse than a screw at the bottom of the Halifax Harbour, gets at least a little bit of usage from them.
CBC's coverage could be better but RDS's as well.
CBC is better if letting throught a sens of place and time matter to you,... the atmosphere, the theatrics and the particulars associated with a show as being a 'live event' is better conveyed.
CBC's cameras might give you glimpses of the crowd gathering at the Bell's doors and will not shortchange your chances to feel and see the pre-game theatrics.... the light and sound show, the skating kids with their flags, the singing of the anthems etc etc.... and once the game is under way the sound of skating and of the crowd chanting is less toned down than what you get through RDS.
The best results can be obtained from an hybrid coverage made up of CBC's cameras and CKAC radio's sound,... plus you get excellent commentator Dany Dube as a bonus.
Despite the broadcasting shortcomings and all.... the playing excellence of our Habs is shinning through.... this is what the celebratory flag waving all over town is all about.... excellence,...god they were terrific in that last game.
The CH has been Julien's nightmare all season long,... he just cant figure them out,... '' from here to Germany '',... yes but how !... says Fedex.
I like the idea of a hybrid... especially because I don't get RDS in HD in my area.
Nice post and i agree , Julien is resolved to the fact that speed with effort kills and is praying for his goaltender to stand on his head tonight.
Mad props to RDS for the great work they've done all year long. They are by far the most balanced commentating in hockey.
When did it become acceptable to openly root for one team on national television?
I admit to a growing respect for Kelly Hrudey's analysis, but that's it. They can keep the rest of those clowns in Toronto, local broadcasts only; what's the point of having them if they just bring their own biases to the show? If that's the case, they are no more qualified to do it than you or I.
The Communist Broadcasting Corportaton coverage of Hockey Night In Toronto is an embarrassment and insulting to anyone not a fan of the laffs. Bob Cole's inability to pronounce players names or just get the players names wrong all together is just one example of how brutal he is. I hardly watch games on cbc unless it's any team other than montreal or the laffs. I will switch to cbc if the laffs are getting smoked just to hear their commentators whine like cole did last saturday when the bell center fans serenading the laffs with 10 mins left in the game. I've had rds now for 5 years and i don't speak french. I would never go back to cbc to watch the habs. Its rds all the way.
It's Ron McLean that really irritates me to no end.
i'll second that.
I've been watching cbc with the sound off, and streaming the games off of CJAD! Cherry is awful and mclean sucks too.
The only ting with that is sometimes the timing is a bit off... But I agree it is good... Even french radio is good.. CKAC with Dany Dube... God analysis..

Further proof - last night, during the Pens-Sens broadcast, Don Cherry actively cheered for the Bruins, urging them to victory. Now the so-called national network has gone beyond actually favouring Toronto to actively cheering for a non-Canadian based team.
I don't blame Cherry for his preference: he is what he is. Every Habs fan has always understood that he has never forgiven Montreal for beating them. And lots of former players and coaches, though now employed to broadcast for one team, secretly still hold their old team closer in their heart. That is only human. However, some basic level of professionalism, or even simple respect, requires that the broadcaster not be open about this bias. It is there that Cherry failed, and the CBC in turn for not controlling him.
Cherry said it himself last night. He was doing colour during a bruins Habs game with Irvin and someone way back when. The Bruins scored on a play and he said "We're gonna come back"
He admitted it was the last time he ever did colour.
what a loser.
"One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time."
you're expecting professionalism from someone like Don Cherry???
Maybe when we get 12 months of summer weather he'll act like a pro...until then he will continue to use his backwoods, fractured vocabulary and painfully embarrassing pronunciations that he thinks makes him endearing
I used to watch games on RDS in CALgary but now I have zero choice...I'm watching the games live via NHL Centre Ice Online in Australia and it is painful to hear tweedledum and tweedledee, Millen and Cole, stroke eachother off. I can't stand to hear old man Cole doing his best to downplay the Habs and STILL insert the Leafs into any conversation. Hockey Night in Canada and "Bob and Harry" have been a disgrace for years. Time to get these two jerks off the airways for good! Lets limit the # of Leafs HNIC games too!!
I don't have RDS, so I have to watch CBC. But when I have a choice, there's no contest.
Ex nihilo nihil fit
i feel bad for you, I paid the extra $6 a month for RDS and haven't looked back
the CBC announcers are nauseating... and it's killing them that their beloved Leafs aren't skating below
Me too... it's a steal for the HABS coverage you get. 4 years ago I watched the Center Ice package via satelite... then when I switched to digital cable I got their sports package - which included CI and was a very good package. But I couldn't justify the extra coin when I was primarily interested in the HABS games. 2 years ago I went with RDS a la carte and I haven't looked back.
Montreal has a great play by play man who did an awesome job with the Montreal Expos and really knows his NHL and could be the savior for the CBC's sinking ship but is ignored by the Center of the Universe bias and is not part of there clique. DENIS CASSAVANT.
I believe TSN tried to get him but he has a great gig.. He is morning man on the Team 990 AM, and he does the game of the week for baseball with Roger Brulotte, and he does Allouettes football broadcasts... So for this reason, I don't think he would go..
Remember, it is all in his back yard... Who they should think of going to get if they dump PJ and Cherry is Pierre McGuire... He is awesome... He is fair and gives montreal what it deserves... He is the only analyst outside of Montreal, which I have heard Komisarek and Bouillon in the same sentence...

Corporate - Yes i'm aware of his gigs but P.J. Stock is on the same radio station and he commutes and Cole commutes from NFLD. and Harry Neal from Buffalo and does the Sabres games on radio all the time so i don't think it would take much of an adjustment for him to do H.N.I.T. mostly on Saturdays and if i were him i'd cut back the radio morning show with that obnoxious Elliot Price to keep my sanity. CBC goes for free lancing and pays big bucks.
You would think the CBC would change it's ways and be a little bit more Hab friendly but no, if anything there seems to be an all out hatred towards them. Did anyone catch Don Cherry's Go Bruins Go cheerleading last night? Totally unprofessional and just sickening if you ask me. Thats it for me. As far as the rest of the series goes, I'm watching it on RDS. When I'm watching it on CBC I can't enjoy watching the game because I'm just seething mad at Knob Cole, Millen, MacLean, Cherry and the rest of those HACKS at the CBC for their anti-Montreal, pro-Boston bias. CBC and HNIC is an embarrassment to our great country. It used to be a great institution, but sadly now it is just a sham. The good news is I'm learning more french every day. Salut RDS!
I live in Sarnia ON and have all of CBC, TSN & RDS.
I watch RDS every time.
I think they have the most Informative, Unbiased,Professional and Entertaining group of Broadcasters than any other station.
I am not even fluent in French but I refuse to watch TSN or CBC if I can see it or PVR it on RDS.
I have even purchased two different drinking mugs from RDS (Like the ones they use on set)
The employees their just seem to have a lot of fun doing what they are doing and the Chemistry is fantastic.
I will forever watch RDS even though I might not understand every word that is said.
Mérci.
I refuse to watch CBC.And although I understand little French but the game remains the same for me.The problem is CBC has lost credibility for many hockey fans across the county.Fans outside of Ontario don't need endless leafs propaganda shoved down their throats. Not endless games of leafs vs. whomever. And their is a backlash because of that.Even now I feel there is a tendency through comments to call the game against the Canadiens.
Boone-
Any thoughts on the best watering-hole to watch the game from? We're comming up from northern VT, sadly, without tickets.
