The Couch vs. the Bar

Where do you cheer on the Habs? (THE GAZETTE/ Pierre Obendrauf)Where do you cheer on the Habs? (THE GAZETTE/ Pierre ObendraufWhere do you watch Habs games?

Do you have a sweet HD set-up that keeps you glued to your couch? Or do you have a local good luck watering hole where you catch all of the games?

Personally, I love watching from home. I can sit on my couch, put my
feet up, stockpile a couple cold ones in the fridge, and flip between
channels to keep an eye on the other games. I’ve got a good view of the screen, the sound is adjusted perfectly, and everything I need is at
arm’s length.

So do I watch that many games from home? No, not really.

Watching from home might seem ideal, but for hockey – especially Montreal Canadiens’ playoff hockey – the bar is my venue of choice. There is something that just feels right when you’re piled into a place with too many people and not enough chairs; where every set of eyes is cemented to a TV screen; where every glass is half-full and half-warm because both the customers and the servers have long forgotten about the drinks and have been swept up by the action.

Montreal is flush with bars, resto-bars and taverns, and I’m curious to know where Habs Inside/Out members watch the games.

The past couple seasons, my bar of choice has been Le Pistol, on Boulevard St-Laurent. There’s a great cast of regulars who know their hockey and love their Habs. The place is always packed, loud, and the crowd is unusually talented at pointing out when the opposition is off-side. If the Habs make Round 2, there are rumours that the owner is going to bring out the big gun - the organ.

On Tuesday, I tried la Taverne Verres Stérilisés, on Rue St-Hubert. The game was barely 5 minutes old and Tim Thomas was already being heckled, Zdeno Chara was being booed, and Carey Price was elevated to the status of a god. I didn’t bother asking if Boston fans were welcome.

I’ve heard good things about Chez Serge, also on Boulevard St-Laurent, but haven’t yet been there myself. And then, of course, there are all the places near the Bell Centre – la Cage aux Sports, Ye Olde Orchard, McLean’s Pub, and about (and this is an estimate) a million others.

So, where in Montreal do you watch games? Do you have any recommendations for your fellow Habs fans? And you out-of-towners – have you found any good places near you that show Canadiens games?

I live in Ottawa with a bunch of know-nothing Sens fans so I prefer to watch the Habs in front of my HDTV with my Dad, son, daughter and wife. Things get pretty crazy when the boys score and a lot of cussing under my breath when they are scored on. The wife won't sit beside me anymore, learned her lesson the hard way what it's like being married to a die-hard fan. Of course, right now there is a rather substantial 'shrine' set up in front of it, carpet, mini stick, ceramic Smiley with #10 on it,, jersey, buttons and the 'Ghosts of the Forum' place mats. Go Habs!!!!

Champs is great for the atmosphere, but it's expensive. I'll probably go to Le Pistol for the game early next week (Monday/Tuesday). It's a great bar, but I've never been on a game night.

Couch is preferred for concentration factor, but when I see a game in Kelowna BC there is only one place to watch Habs games, Sturgeon Hall. Both owners are Habs fans, there are several large HD tv's, Josh Gorges bleu, blanc, rouge #26 is on the wall (and he frequents the establishment in the summer). Plus when the World Juniors were in Vancouver and some games were played in Kelowna, I got to drink beer and eat wings with Pointu (Guy Lapointe). Does it get better than that?

First choice? @ home with my wife and son: both have forgotten more about hockey than I will ever know. Modit Molson. Going out ? Magnan's is the only place to find dead cow and beer and like minded brilliant hockey minds in this city.

I've been all over the place this season, but Benelux (corner of Sherbrooke and Jeanne-Mance) and Pistol are my favorites. Benelux has good pint specials on games too (although i think only the games on Tues/Thurs). There's also a new "Ye Old Orchid" on Prince Arthur and St-Laurent that's good too. But, for me, Pistol or Benelux are the top 2. Champs, Frappe, and Cage (especially the one connected to the Bell Center) all deserve honorable mentions.

Chris - I envy you, what a great job you have. You get to eat in expensive restaurants and then drink in bars as you watch Habs' games - all on the tab of the Gazette. You must be taking lessons from Dave Stubbs and Mike Boone! The Original 24.2 Cups

I live in Calgary, so it's watching from home for me. Not many bars here have RDS. And there is no pro-Habs crowd so feels kinda lonely.

BARFLY on 4062 Boulevard St-Laurent... Indeed, when I can get out to see a Habs game, Barfly is the only place for it. They've got a couple of new HD-ready wide LCD screens and Happy Hour goes til 9:00. It's also the only place with neighbourhood dogs so when people get excited, and dogs start barking, it's the best way to experience a Habs goal. Knowledgeable fans long since insisted no CBC - only RDS will do.

Great bar.

Another great thing about catching the game at the local watering hole with buddies and strangers alike is that you don't have to clean up afterwards. :) . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

I prefer my couch, but that is probably due to the fact that I live in Northern California and there are very few Habs fans out here. I did run into a guy who was the son of a former Hab in the 70s, although his dad's name was not one that I recognized. Anyway, The Graduate is the name of the bar in Davis, California. If any other Habs fans are in the area...

Ok, i posted earlier this morning anonymously and its still not up so i'm registered now. I know of Kilgors in Toronto as a Habs bar. I think they even have a couple of old Forum Red seats there. its pretty cool to be surrounded by habs fans in the middle of toronto. I highly recommend it if you are stuck in Toronto on a wintry saturday night. But last year i moved from London ON to Hamilton ON. While its nice to be able to catch a bulldogs games the city is obviously very Leafs centric. does anyone know of a good Habs friendly bar in Hamilton? Thanks!

Only down side about Kilgor's is that it's way too small. The place is always packed early on and the TV's are small and the volume isn't very loud (and this is when I went for a couple of regular season games). But if you're in Toronto and stuck it's nice to be around some friendly faces. It's on Bloor west of Spadina.

If your under 25 or want to relive your university exploits, go check out Reggies, the Concordia bar. Located in the Hall building on de Maisonneuve, I've been watching the play-offs unfold there and the atmosphere is absolutely incredible. Everyone has a jersey and/or flag and all the Bell Center chants and boos are echoed by the knowledgeable fans. Any heterosexual man will want to check it out, for the HD screens and also the only other thing that we care about as much as sports. Its a must. MVPrice

McGill also has a uni bar "Gerts" on mactavish street with tv screens but it's closed on weekends. I figure that would be the case for Reggie's also.

Anyone know of anywhere I can feel at home (at a bar) in Ottawa? We've all just basically been watching at home and I want to go out and feel the excitement. Can't wait for exams to be over so I can head home and feel the real Montreal pride.

There is a place at Murray and Dalhousie called Chez Lucien. It's a cool bar, but it won't be too riled up. Also, I don't think they would have the game with the volume on. If you want volume, I think they will be showing the game tonight at the Royal Oak in the Glebe (3rd and Bank). They have HD and a big screen with a projector. Its a Sens bar though, so I can't guarantee Montreal pride. Although let me know if you're going and maybe I will head over with my buddy and my Habs jersey.

I'd heard good things about the Prescott in Little Italy in Ottawa for habs fans. Checked it out last night and there was definitely a strong bleu, blanc et rouge vibe. Also lots of tvs, quarts, and a great meatball sandwich. Too bad the game was so terrible, but I don't blame the bar. Get your head in the game Price!

did they show the game with volume?

Chris By big guns perhaps the owner didn't really mean an organ... his brother is Sam Roberts Or maybe it'll be Sam Roberts on the organ? Other great places to watch are Champs (yes, gohabs 25, it's still open), Ziggy's, and, if you're into 4L pitchers, Peel Pub. Yeah, I know, Peel Pub is kind of dingy and the new location doesn't have the same "charm" as the old one, but the atmosphere is still really good.

ya right? the owner of the pistol is sam roberts' brother?

i love sam roberts!

My couch..it's comfy!

That all sounds so awesome to be surrounded by habs fans and bars. But i live in stinky old hamilton and as you can imagine its not quite like that here in the land of the Leafs. I know Kilgor's in Toronto on Bloor St. is a Habs bar. I've been there with friends and its fantastic. Imagine Toronto on a cold Saturday night, Lafs are in town and traffic downtown is a mess and blue jerseys everywhere then you walk into this place and it's bleu, blanc et rouge everywhere. they even have a couple of old forum Reds in the corner if memory serves me right. its a little piece of heaven in enemy territory. But I'm new to Hamilton so if anyone knows of any Montreal bars in Hamilton or Burlington I would really appreciate it! I've been stuck watching all the games at home.

Ye Olde Orchard is a pretty good place to watch games, I watched the Habs get first place there for the first time this season and it was packed of habs fans.... they also have a urinal that is retired because Guy Lafleur peed in it (or so that is the legend).

Champs Sports Bar is my favorite of all the ones I've been to. Haven't been in quite some time actually. I hope it survived the lockout! Any updates?
